  • If you've ever thought about buying a classic Western W49 Bowie, but you're flat broke, check out the new Cold Steel Wild West Bowie. This big knife features classic looking features that fans of brass might appreciate. Just look at the dang cross guard. She's a beaut. In this review I compare it to an Ontario Marine Raider Bowie, an 499, and a Benchmade Jungle. And the whole while Lynn watches over us with his knowing, graceful presence. Batoning, chopping, throwing, all the things that must be accomplished with a big bowie knife. He loves you and approves. Praise be.

I have been waiting for this day. The reminder notification has been clicked, and now I wait patiently. And yet, the thumbnail stares back into me, with a kind indifference that I cannot tell is infatuation, or pity. I begin to day dream of the pithy and sarcastic remarks that will be made in the video, but I cannot truly guess the genius. Before I know it hours have gone by, and yet the same pictures stares at me, unmoving, unblinking, and immortal. Look upon this thumbnail ye mighty, and despair!
Then I realized I have law school finals this coming week so I have to study. But looking forward to the vid Advanced Knife Bro! I'm a new subscriber and have been watching a ton of your previous videos!

If this knife lasts as long and works as hard as my Western W49 I bought in Lander, Wyoming in 1984, then you've got a real gem, my friend! That knife has been with me on many a hunt for elk, deer, antelope and even a few coyotes. I didn't chop much wood with it, as I always had my hatchet with me, but that blade can hold an edge longer than any of my other knives. God bless!

I should buy one of these as it allows for preservation of my real Western W49 m, painstakingly restored to brilliant mirror/brass/rosewood glory. But it's so damn good at Bowie knife chores! Original W49 are not 16 inches or hollow grind. Still a great blade it appears. So I can add this model to my buy list, because I love owning many big awesome knives & this is far from my biggest.

I have 2 Western W49 and what used to be a $50 dollar knife is now a $300 (or more) collector blade . My Cold Steel bowie arrived 2 months ago and after almost completely removing the top guard - greatly reducing the bottom guard and milling a choil = One heck of a good knife for the outdoors or self defense .
Thanks for your video Bro .

Hello, i see this is 3 years ago. But i have a Western W49 made in 1979. The knife and sheat are in mint condition and has never been used, not even sharpend. I live in Norway and bought it two weeks ago. Do you know what a knife like this is worth, if i may ask?

    • @QuantumPyrite_88.9
      @QuantumPyrite_88.9 Год назад

@@bushcraft_in_the_north I'm interested in how you know your W49 was made in 1979. 1979 is in the timeframe when Western Cutlery - Colorado USA was going out of business.
A W49 in mint condition from that time should be worth approximately and at least 200 US dollars .If you have the original box ,the collector value goes up.
A receipt of sale to an original purchaser also increases the value . The condition of the sheath - design and any markings on the sheath are also a determiner .
Collectors of Western knives may or may not give you top dollar, depending on the tang stamp and any other markings.
Contacting a Blade Forum and sending pictures ,would give you a good idea.

I have a 1970s w49B version that I've had and used heavily sense I bought it from brand new when I was a kid. I carried it during my military time and it still holds an edge. It's seen its share of hard use, the blade is slightly pitted from me painting it flat black (during military) I've sense polished it out the original sheath unfortunately got moldy from the many times being submerged and rained on while being on my hip in the service. Even with being oiled up during a couple of year storage, so looking for a replacement sheath for it. Anyway it's always been my go to for camping, military, and general use and is always close by lol. Mines closing in on 50 years old and still gets that holy crap that's a big blade when I show it to someone new to me and share some of its stories and where it's been with me on my adventures. It's patina and hard use are what give it that look. The handle is perfect for my big hands and the weight is what makes it so useful. Other blades have been added but this is still my favorite.

I think the brass guard loosened itself in anticipation of knowing that Advanced Knife Bro was going to pound on it anyways with his baton stick, so it just threw in the towel and said what the hell..it's inevitable at this point, so we might as well loosen now, and maybe that will allow it to soften the shock from the coming repeated blows.

I've only watched a few of your video reviews. But your commentary is always brilliant and funny. Keep up the great work. Coming from Australia a big knife is always impressive "That's not a knife, this is a knife". Just kidding. I would never carry a knife like this.

Speaking of the key word “ asshole “, or “ assholes “ i should say , I see that you have about 28 / 29 of them ( the holes that gave this vid a thumbs down I am referring to ).
This vid is great !!! So great that I just subscribed!!
I know the feeling haha- My In laws just shake their heads when they see 15 boxes of knives lying around the house .
PS- Be careful with that Cold Steel Trailmaster San Mai - I missed the sheath cause I wasn’t paying attention and almost lost my middle finger .

Thanks Bro, great review as always. Did CS fix the knife or are you just gonna live with it? Would be interested to know about the after sales at CS. There’s too much innuendo in this vid for me to comment on all of it, so I’m not going to. I’ll just give you one, “that’s what she said” I think that covers most of them. I like that there are knives like this out there, it’s not my thing, but I’m happy that I could buy one if I wanted. Cheers.

Could you please show the balance point of this knife as well? Just a bit curious about that since I had never used a full tang bowie

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro

Balance point is about two and a half fingers, blade side, in front of the cross guard

When you have a hard, metallic stress point held in place by something as squishy as wood, it's going to loosen up with use. This can be mitigated somewhat by placing a spacer or bushing between the two, but that's really just a bandaid for a bad (or lazy) design. I'd steady the guard with a thin wire or leather, epoxy it in place, and call it good.
