Yes there are tax payers in private sector as well (duh) but why do they keep the profit while the average tax payer only sees a loss? I'm not sure what the problem is with government, except maybe they shouldn't be spending that kind of money on a sporting event... but that's not really the point of the initial comment, the point was about where the profit goes.

I’ve heard of ideas like having only a few cities that are set up for the Olympics and rotating through them, rather than having cities build hundreds of millions of dollars worth of infrastructure that likely won’t be used again.
Could rotate between Los Angeles, London, an Asian city (Tokyo?) and Melbourne. Have a new city every so often.

No, London was a complete money sink. Most of the funds went to West Ham United's owners who have connections to the organisers and financial stakes to various newspapers (Such as The Sun)who promoted their actions in the bidding war.
NONE of the money actually went to anything, and they foolishly believed that they solved the issue of inactive and unfit children at schools. Which, by the way, DIDN'T happen. Also, much of the infrastructure was temporary because the costs spiralled out of control (did you know that the London Olympic Stadium was initially going to have a screen that televised the event for non-event ticket holders? That was scrapped). The 2012 Olympics were also nearly cancelled due to the Tottenham (and eventually, England) riots of 2011 due to the high amount of damage caused.

I believe hosting the Olympics is usually a loss and think most cities would be better without it. That being said Calgary is one of the few exceptions. Calgary is the training ground for much of Canada's Olympic roster already. The buildings are in place already and would likely need renovation but not much in the way of new construction. This has the long term benefits of keeping our training facilities running afterwards. Calgary is used to the influx market for events like the stampede so not much problem there either.

The Olympics need to be put in 1 place forever now. Winter Olympics could stay in Vancouver Canada, or somewhere in Europe near the Alps. Then have the summer olympics somewhere so it's not crazy dry but not constant rain, maybe back to Beijing, London, Tokyo, or Australia. That way buildings aren't built for literally 1 month of use and then get abandoned like in Brazil. Every country joining in the games would throw in a bit of cash to offset the high costs.
Lets say its built to the cost of 80 billion, but then following games it'll (only) be maybe 5 billion to simply revamp the buildings.
Doesn't really help the movement of locals, but at least it would only happen once.

I agree on principle, but as someone from Vancouver, I think if it were to stay in Canada it should be somewhere further north/east. A split Olympics with indoor events in Vancouver and outdoor events in Revelstoke or even Calgary would serve better, because the main issue from the Olympics when they were in Vancouver, was that it was too warm for us to keep the snow for outdoor sports, we had to ship in snow and that's honestly ridiculous. We did have most of our outdoor events up in Whistler, but it was still too warm, and it's only getting warmer. Vancouver is the city with the highest winter temperatures in Canada, A city with better frost would be less expensive to host in.

The trains are already crowded (and accidents happen constantly), street traffic is already insane during rush hour, and having so many more people around is going to make it impossible to get anywhere. Businesses are planning on changing their start hours so that they don't all overlap in an attempt to make rush hour easier, but 1) I can't see how much that would actually help and 2) literally how can we live ours lives if our jobs and the businesses we rely on everyday are moving hours around? Building a huge new shopping mall, witch is a national train hub and connection to the centre of London for people all over the country. having the main stadium sold to a local football club and hosting sporting events and matches to this day. There are more than enough facilities to handle all the events, with almost nothing needing to be built competition wise. Plus, being that spread out would certainly lessen the traffic issues. I live in Vancouver, where the 2010 Winter games took place. Yes, there was some tourism boost benefits, but the inconvenience to the citizens was atrocious. I had a Police officer from a completely different Province (not even our region) threaten me with arrest for TOUCHING a fence one day... not just any fence, but the THIRD layer of different security fencing around a place. Many roads were closed, or limited in the way traffic could use them so that IOC vehicles could get places efficiently.
I lived across the street from a park that is popular down where I lived for homeless people to hang out, and even camp in. For the months leading up to the games, and conveniently thru to just a couple weeks after they ended, it was "under construction" so that tourists didnt see our homelessness problem.
I LOVED the games being here, because of my love of sports. But the inconvenience to the general public, is NOT worth it. If the IOC, which is worth hundreds of billions of dollars, actually used THEIR money more to make the games happen, I'd be on board for us doing them again. But as things stand right now, I would not welcome them back.... despite all the fun it brought.

I appreciate you talking about this.
You think it's a mystery because you fundamentally misunderstand institutional power.

As a Salt Lake county resident, I think Utah made the best of after Olympic situations. Utah has always been known as a winter sports destination. They repurposed the facilities for public use and training. They may have bought votes, but the area is better for the event.

Why don't they just have it in the same five or so places? Only one place in any given country. The costs will be a lot lower over time and nothing will be displaced.

Times have changed. The Olympics just ain't worth it anymore. The corrupt IOC ought to be all arrested, scrapped entirely, and rebuilt from scratch....though I doubt it'll be any better even after that.
    RIP Tokyo's economy.

Why do they have to build a new stadium every time the Olympics comes to town? Are there really no other sports facilities already available in these major cities?

Sports and cartoonishly corrupt governing bodies. Such an iconic combo.

I have been involved in Skeleton for Team Canada since 2006 and most recently coached for Australia in PyeongChang last year. This video barely scratches the surface of corruption within the IOC. There is too much for a RUclips comment, but some hot topics are: IOC list of demands for IOC executives while at the Games, Revenue distribution (host cities only really benefit from increased tourism, not Olympic revenue), and then the biggest issues (in my opinion) are the IOC demands placed on the athletes. When I was in PyeongChang I made videos for RUclips and wasn’t allowed to monetize anything because the IOC owns all rights to any publication of the Games (athletes aren’t allowed to mention their personal sponsors who got them to the Olympics!). I actually had the IOC copyright claim my Opening Ceremonies video and they attempted to give my channel a copyright strike. It’s becoming transparently clear that the goal of the Games is to line the pockets of the IOC’s major players no matter the cost.

In Tokyo money/people have been diverted from the Tohoku earthquake reconstructions. People are still waiting to get into housing years later. The Olympics isn't worth it.

I'm from Vancouver and the 2010 Olympics were held here, but the damage is still done and outlasting. Billions were rerouted and spent to alter the Downtown area and police took a turn to (unofficially) say drug use would be something they'd turn their heads to so long as they stayed beyond a certain line in Downtown, and they're still there and very strictly sticking to that line. That's now known as the most dangerous neighbourhood in the city and it looks like a wasteland, not to mention the obscene death rate increase around there from overdose.
Addiction is a disease, I know. We could have used the money to put towards rehabs and preventions (that I guess we're doing now?) and that used to be a high priority, but the Olympics turned it into a "clean up" game instead of a community effort to provide needed resources. It's always been a problem here, but halting our attempts to fix it was a mistake. Sure, nine years later our Downtown area is still pretty and pristine. But why was that worth derailing one of the most prevalent issues around here?

I’m not going to lie, the Sydney 2000 Olympics seem to be extremely beneficial, we not have so many great facilities, stadiums, etc at our Olympic Park, as well as the direct economic benefits reported such as jobs, etc.

I'm a huge sports fan from Hamburg and would have loved to have the olympic games in my city, but in the 2015 referendum about Hamburg hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics I still voted no. These games only benefit the rich and the normal people of the city get screwed.

Let me break this down for you. Ioc is now more interested in selling cities the Olympics than helping those cities.
