how did you comment on your own comment two minutes before the original comment?
that was just too soon and too precise.
+TheLurkingPanda Good question lol

I don't cry like a baby, I cry like an adult- silently on my own- pretending nothing happened afterward, and look up inspirational quotes and funny cat videos on the internet to make myself feel better.
John Oliver looks like he has such fun with his job. Good for him.
Yeah... But sometimes his antics does cause a bit of wallet grief for HBO
This comment hasn’t aged super well lol
John having fun with his job. Now he seems really angry and sad about Trump and COVID.
Puffin gonna do what puffins do.
Just wait for 2020, he is barely able to cling to life
That Tongan guy had so much oil the U.S. invaded him.
I think he needs some freedom!
Better free the fuck out of them!
Better free the fuck out of them!
Freedom from Hoda.
As a representative of the U.S.
Yeah, I'd go for that.

Wow, first time HBO managed to get away with releasing a full episode (combine this vid's runtime with the one on Journalism, and you get roughly 28 minutes).
All you missed was a full 2-minute compilation of "newscasters perving out over the Tonga guy"
There is a "And Now, This..." missing
I mean... unless I'm missing something, they could post the entire show each week if they wanted to
That is because HBO owns and produces Last Week T. They can do whatever they like with it.
you said get away with like it's not their decision
Did somebody say party?
sounds like a new Olympic meme
Eyyyyy.. what are you doin here?
Snowcat, love your videos!
Millions immediately turn off the TV.
snowcat party
I wish to formally unsay every utterance of the word "party" I have ever spoken, so that I am not responsible for having said it.

You did not.
I'm afraid because that Syrian girl exists. It's like with Superman; she's amazing and powerful, but she makes me realize how meak I am.
@gnbman
Then again, too much of that harsh attitude is unhealthy.
As a simple example, she's not going to find the same joy in her breakfast as I do.
If she sees a broken rusk, she'll eat it and mumble; 'It's going to end up as shit anyway, what does it matter' whereas I (if I have the time) get butter and 'glue' it back together, because it makes me happy.
Ór I take the pieces, turn it into a little treat and put peanutbutter (or nutella or jam or fruithail or hagelslag or other bread-spreads) on the different pieces of rusk and treat myself to a tiny tiny maximized-opportunity-rusk.
Now, that can brighten your day. Whereas others need to do 5 laps in a pool.
And others just want to watch BakeOff with their dog on their lap. As long as you're *happy* and not hurting anyone while doing that, it's o.k.
Just because you find joy in other things than the Olympian Syrian swimmers, doesn't mean you are meak. Emotionally hardened traumatized people aren't necessarily a good example to mirror onto your own life.
@@Widdekuu91 those are some good points and you worded it very well! One should never feel bad just because others have been through worse than them. Not only is suffering not a competition, but also is it important to keep in mind that severe trauma really isn't this inspirational, glorious and badass thing it often gets made out to be. It just sucks most of the time. So one should never feel guilty for being well off. That's not 'meak', it's just normal and healthy.
@@hannabira5905
Exactly :) Sometimes people have learned how to handle their trauma's or turn them into good things (I've been through some stuff and it probably somehow made me a better writer and artist) but as you mentioned, there's a lot of shitty moments besides the good ones. It takes a lot of energy to transfer nightterrors or emotional fears and trauma-thoughts into a story or artwork.
J.K. Rowling used her mother's death as a motivation for some of the powerful moments in Goblet of Fire, yet you wouldn't want your mom to die, in order to be able to 'write better about loss.' It's just a little opportunity that comes with the misery.
And, I mean, some people feel that crying out 'Aahh that hurts!" over a cut in your hand as 'weak'.
But I now feel that crying out over a cut in your hand is brave.
I've been told to stfu about pain or sadness a lot of times in the past and being able to open your mouth and voice your problems or pain is important and often very difficult.
I admire people that demand a bandaid or say things along the lines of; 'No, mr. Manager, I will nót start this meeting untill I have peed first. I was busy before the meeting started, and I need to pee and I wíll pee before we start." And then just walk out to the toilet.
Standing up for yourself and your feelings is very important :)

Hi. :)
John's delivery of "A butt" killed me lol
I am brazilian and I am proud about the Opening Ceremony. We need something to work out in this country.
Objectification is objectification, no matter the gender. I was equally as creeped out at the Tongan flag bearer being talked about like he was a piece of meat by the commentators as I was at Giselle being called an "export". It's just weird and wrong no matter the gender and just makes me euch
Can we please give more likes to this comment, people? So the "if was a woman" club can shut up.
To be fair, I think the guy was feeling great and he even winked to the camera (no, the objectification is still not right).

Stealing consumer's views again, John?
I think its the other way around lol
I still don't understand how consumer gets away with uploading his videos.
He doesn't monetize them and in return HBO doesn't strike them.
+Danny B He states in the comments that HBO doesn't strike videos as long as they're shorter than five minutes. This is also why a lot of his older "content" was removed and required slight cuts to be reuploaded. Also, I don't think John Oliver is stealing views from consumer. I don't think he even knows who consumer is.
+Dare to Zlatan it's a joke
these glasses are amazing on you John
I never realized how awful the commentary is on TV..... Seems in line with the decline in good journalism etc.
I find that BBC coverage of just about anything is better than most network stations or cable news. BBC's coverage of international news is pretty good compared to how dreadful CNN or Fox news is.
Agreed.
Yes, it was. :( You have to consider those three anchors are paid to "report" celebrity news and health trends on a popular morning show.
+Eekiki Definitely. living in New England I subscribe to CBC and the BBC. always loved CBC. They do good professional work.
That's why I watched it on ESPN Caribbean. Luckily I did not have to see/hear that crappy commentary from NBC
I appreciate almost the full show being posted
the way Oliver puts up every content is just amazing. when u see a scene normally it was not supposed to be funny or interesting, but Oliver puts in such a way it seems so right to see the discrimination or the humor content in it.
This video made me realize that all he has to do is say "butt" in a British accent to make me laugh
+The Troll Under the Bridge Sweet, sweet irony.
Nearly every time someone insults a stranger's intelligence in a comment they make at least one stupid error. You, however, have managed four in a single sentence. It's "you're" not "your," "then" not "them," "surprised" not "suprised," and you forgot the period. Quality work, dipshit.
Which do you find more ironic though? His name The Troll Under the Bridge or you need to take an IQ test, you will be suprised.

I'm Canadian and VERY happy we didn't have to watch NBC's broadcast. I saw everything on Twitter about Viera and it sounded awful. And John proved that.
Thank you so much John for not exploiting our problems like many others in the foreign media love to do so (from the BBC to other shows that are similar to yours and even the goal keeper of the USA female soccer team)!!! Your review was just perfect!!! As a Brazilian, I must say: MUITO MUITO MUITO MUITO OBRIGADA!!!
That refugee girl is beautiful on the inside and out.

She even won her first heat in Olympic competition - she didn't advance, but she is a winner.

This comment section is one giant trigger warning.
Through individual accomplishment in fair competition with successful people arriving from all corners we show that collectively as a world we are all equal, because the best can come from literally anywhere. Even a bombed out swimming pool in the middle of a major war.
I guess the mediterranean did a good job pointing out the best swimmers...
(I'm going to hell for this)
+Harry Dirtay I think you are the one that missed the point. The guy's that actually go around looking for athletes aren't countries either. That's what I was comparing the mediterranean to.

"What is interesting about that poem... is nothing" :D
I got furiously angry with NBCs coverage of the Opening Ceremony, or should I say Commercial Marathon, seriously the first hour was useless talking heads babbling on and on, then when the show actually started they would show 5 minutes of ceremony, then go to 5 minutes of commercials, I was ready to switch off after about 3/4 hour.... luckily I think they locked NBCs programing director in a closet and the coverage got better, but geeez that first hour was maddening!
I would love to work for J.O., for free!! Love this show, John, writers, producers are so hilariously talented. When I'm in a funky mood I watch a clip and not only enlightened but in a great mood again. Thank you!
I like how sports is an escapist thing yet these people try to pull politics into it. Maybe just splice some shots from Syrian civil war in there? Couple of mud slides or hurricane deaths next to the shiny guy.
The refugee team is simply giving the athletes back their opportunity to compete when it was unjustly ripped away from them due to war. I don't see anything wrong with it. If you're gonna argue the Olympics are pulling politics into sport, well banning the Russian team over a doping scandal so close to the start of the event is a better case of that.
Banning Russia from Olympics has direct connection to the sport. Doping as in cheating in sport. Turkeys coup attempt and terror attacks in France have fuckall to do with it.iampetz
I think he was talking about the announcers ridiculous attempts to shoehorn tragic events into each of the countries entrance. Nobody needs to be reminded of the attacks in France at the opening of the Olympics.
As a Brazilian, I have to say politics has a lot to do with this Olympics. Millions disappeared from our pockets when we only had coins. If you look for information, you'll see a strong connection between the people's feelings and this politicians. There's no civil war, tho. Is more like people protesting a lot against the corruption. Better than sit around and cry like babies.
Either way, I'm cheering for the Olympics. That was a mistake, but let's try to do this right.
*****
Yes I agree that politics has alot to do with olympics in general. This kind of discussion is fine anywhere else. But once the games have started and I am just watching the TV broadcast of the events I don't want to hear about commentators tying politics to specifc countries. It should not matter. They are just athletes who are from these places. Talk about specific atheletes or the sports but don't sum up a country "There was a coup there couple of weeks ago".
That senior frogs slay just got me .... I can't breathe I'm cracking up so hard
This refugee girl is now my motivation and inspiration! I rewinded the video, listened again and thought: "Yes! Here's the attitude we all need!"
That Syrian girl is bloody INCREDIBLE.
Andrea is my favorite Disney working-class woman.
Not enough fanart of her.

Thank you John Oliver for enlightening me with this video.
"Here comes USA, which is about to elect Donald Trump."
Is that really how the Americans covered the opening ceremony?
Unfortunately, yes. NBC says a lot of negative things about countries, focuses on the American team for 5 minutes when they come in, and go to commercial a lot.
Anyone else think the new Olympics logo looks like a nuke?

The Ceremony was amazing, and despite of all problems here in Brazil, the Games are just ok as in any other country. Things are well. Cheer from Brazil John, great video!
Things are not well in Brazil.
Coincidentally the video decided to buffer right at 3:58...
"What is interesting about that poem is nothing."
8:21 so regardless color, financial status, culture background, language, etc. you can be the best!!
Nowadays a little dopey helps for public consumption. Nevertheless Olympics are unfortunately Games!!
it's ok for women to be sexist but if were two men commenting on a woman. they would be grilled in the media.
On the other hand, during the volleyball games they zoom in on womens asses.
So if it were two gay male commentators, we could expect a scandal?
Whine much?
Careful, you might cut yourself with that edge!
He clearly mocked them for their behavior
as a non-American, a few questions please to Americans after watching countless John Oliver amazing videos:
1. Seems like in the US major TV networks are silent (have a pact with politics) about problematic issue. BUT seems like the local, cable news is doing a lot of good job investigating stuff. Am I right?
2. Picture of USA by John Oliver is this: a sham place where deregulated business will do anything they can (and work with politicians) to rip you off your money. Am I right?
3. Bouns question: how would European version of this show look like? Can EU be as fucked as the US?
thanks
Well John Oliver gives everyone a look at the downsides of America with very few stories of the good stuff going on. So in general his show is much more negative about the U.S. than it is in reality.
1. To some extent they can be but local news is only local news. They're responsible for telling everyone in the town whats going on. Something happening in Chicago is something I can't really help when I'm in Atlanta. Major news networks do cover some important stuff but either in less detail or in stuff that is more apparent nationally because their audience is the entire U.S. not just chicago or just Atlanta for example. So you are partly right but there's a good reason for it. Local news can still be just as corrupt or more so as big news stations though.
2. USA isn't really a sham. It's still the best place in the world in my obviously somewhat biased opinion. I wouldn't live here if the U.S. was as bad as you describe. Businesses are somewhat regulated but they're definitely irresponsible and are a problem. They however hire the most people in the US and everyone wants to make money so if they don't rip us off they don't make money. Business and politicians go hand in hand unfortunately so you are again partly right but you take it too far as again John Oliver only tells of the bad parts of business or at least mostly. They do great stuff as well but its hard to come by. The average american isn't nearly as ripped off.
3. EU is basically as fucked as the US if not more. The EU is threatening to fall apart with Greece in the toilet and Britain already trying to leave. Germany and a few countries like it are doing the brunt of work to keep it together especially considering the smaller countries in Europe unintentially causing problems. Business can impact politicians in the EU as much as in the US (usually not because US has been around longer than EU but still). The larger countries such as Germany dictate most of the policies in the EU which smaller countries don't like. Europe is still rather closed off in terms of immigration so they remain somewhat bigoted at least in terms of racism. This is why refugees are made out to be such a big problem when in reality the US accepts just as many in fact more than the EU but doesn't really make as big of a deal as for example Britain or Germany make of it. Many of your local news stations do the same thing as ours so there's essentially no difference there. Everyone assumes the US to be this perfect place of hard work at 40 hour weeks makes you very successful but that isn't the case. Hard work in the US is working 50-60 hour weeks for 40 hours a week pay to be in the middle class. Working your ass off while getting ripped off by other people trying to make their living. Whatever issues you see about the US is usually just as much a problem for the EU as well.
Hope that helps (from a college student in Georgia, US so you know any potential bias)
+Jack Xhemali America is absolutely as bad as it's shown on this show if not much worse. And one of the worst things about us is that pretty much anytime someone tries to actually show all the bad stuff about us, a ton of people then make your argument, which is basically that "Well there is some bad stuff in America but no one ever talks about the good, which somehow outweighs or even negates the bad". It's a BS argument which tries to basically sweep all the negative, of which their is an INSANE amount, under the rug. We need to focus on the bad, rather than the so called good, most of which is not really in any way meaningful.
+Jack Xhemali
He's not really giving "everyone a look at the downsides of America." His target audience is American (his income from RUclips is insubstantial in comparison to what he probably gets from HBO) and his intent is to inform about aspects of the country that we may encounter in our lives but never knew the negative qualities of (a lot of his pieces have boring titles because of this). It's just investigative journalism made interesting with a comedic touch.
To answer question 2; the business in America is slightly over regulated in some ways (making it hard to break in) and a little under in others (allowing price gauging in some cases), however I feel as though it is moving in the right way. Also the country is very big and your experience will very greatly from state to state. The two worst things however are people wanting to not work together and people wanting to work at a job instead of for themselves.
By my count, the commentators brought up no less than 3 different times that Brazil was bad at football. That's the harshest burn.
That would still be better than if it had been brought up 7 different times.
Lithuanian commentators made a joke about 7-1 and then proceeded to shit-talk Brazilian football for like 5 minutes
America has 9/11, Brazil has 7-1
Really? That's pretty hypocritical considering that Brazil actually got to the WC Finals, while the US only got to the quarters(?).
semifinals and yes the usa can't really afford to mock any other football team when they're completely shit at it and can't even call it by the sport's actual name, I would love to see how they would've fared against Germany or even Brazil
Seeing Oliver mock Mr. Fora Temer made my whole week better. Thank you, Oliver.
I really thought he would mention how shitty the government is and doesn't care about their own people... Ah well
+Corey Miller True I guess
He has another video that talks about that and the controversy behind these games.
he's already covered that.

Hi Allie
Hi Allie, how are ya?
hi nikko
fuck all of you
Sacrifice your youngest child to our lord and savior Molach. Give the child the sweet release of death, a gift to deliver them from this cruel reality. Their soul will travel to the darkest pits of hell where no one will hear their screams of terror as Moloch devours their soul adding to his ever increasing power. Our father who resides in the underworld will watch over you if he is pleased with the sacrifice. Once our Lord gains enough power he will return to feast upon the souls of those who have not submitted to his rule. While we, his ever faithful servants, will be his slaves and build his kingdom on top of the bones of his enemies and the ruins of this world.

WOW, that Brazilian poem hits real after the recent Amazon fires
Watching this from the 2020 Olympics and I still think that woman would say "PARTAY" now.
Dear John Oliver, There are PALMS and TREES but Palmtrees do not exist! LOL
Actually, the "Arecaceae" family is, in fact, commonly called "Palm Trees".
They do, in fact, exist.
you'll be correcting a lot of people in your life if you take issue with the term "palm trees"
+Diviance incorrect, there are versions that are trees and versions that are palms. palms have no limbs. trees have limbs. palms have fibrous trunks. trees have woody trunks. palms do not have a cambium, but trees do. so palms are a different classification than trees. (edit) and I will add that the term "tree" is the same as using the word "weed" to describe a plant. People say "palm trees" because they are tall and have leafy tops, but bamboo can be so too and they aren't trees, they are grasses (which palms are more closely related to than the tree variety).
+headfangs there are no such things as "headfangs" lol
there's no such thing as Mike Wazowski either 👀
"Did somebody say, Party?"
I'm so early that this video is still currently available in my country
4:18 you also glossed over the fact, that these reactions towards the athlete from tonga were pretty sexist and objectified that man.
but that's none of my business...
You're correct and it's not
that refugee woman, sounds like a great movie or documentary to me.
He's so right about the comments focusing on highlighting all the bad things. I found it to be so distasteful. This is suppose to be a moment to forget about all that's wrong and just see the beautiful display of diversity.. so bad us humans lean towards tragedy
To John Oliver's research team: Kudos! Those few seconds on the situation with Dilma and Temer were the most level headed, well researched summary of this mess I heard on any media. You would be hard pressed to find anything so succinct and clear in the Brazilian press.
Seems like it's ok to objectify men but not women
When men are objectified a trillion more times, grabbed and groped, whistled at constantly by gay men, and been fired for not being sexy enough, then you can complain.
Because a lot of men actually don't mind.
oh god get the fuck out of here with your double standard bullshit. I can complain right now if I want to. if you're going to be against sexual objectification, lead by example. these double standards are by products of feminism that's lost its way. "since you objectify us, we'll objectify you". Instead of acknowledging that sexual attraction is a totally organic thing, and sexuality is just human nature, you want to punish our most innate qualities.. you're also conflating sexual objectification with sexual harassment. being groped and getting fired for not being sexy enough is harassment not objectification (not to mention illegal). i advise you to look up what both terms actually mean. Also take note that men dont give a shit at highly sexual depictions of men in movies, tv, print media and advertising (yes there is a ton of it) but we don't give a shit. This is generally a female complaint, and I don't know a single woman that doesn't want to be perceived as sexy or be desirable... so this is mostly a complaint of women who are haters and aren't perceived as attractive. Simplying commenting that a woman is hot, attractive, or sexy is seen as objectification by misguided feminists. You literally can't even say a woman looks good.
what the hell does my comment have to do with the refugee girl? my comment was in reference to the objectification of that dude walking shirtless by the news anchors.
yeah, the difference is thousands of years of patriarchal violence against women vs almost no violence of women against men. idiot.
1:01 - The red video seek bar gets exactly between the white space and video space.
Depends on your screen resolution. For me that happened at about 1:03.
You must be a very fun person to hang out with.
+afterburner7847 did somebody say party?
I thought I was the only person who noticed random details like that :)

Bill Wurtz: is it Tonga Time? *I Think Its Tonga Time*
I think it's Tonga Time
6:14 fucking bullseye.
Can you IMAGINE the uproar if those were MALE commentators acting like that toward a FEMALE athlete?
they literally do. all the time.
Can you imagine the uproar if the President of the United States did that?
He'd be terminated immediately. _Right?_
@Jenny Shull
(I know, it was sarcasm :P )
@@Widdekuu91 oof that made me hurt deep inside. If only it had actually happened that way
I see your point and it thought it was a bit inappropriate but they weren’t talking abt his private parts so that comment can get a pass even tho it’s cringey. The chest was quite oily tho.
Dear John Oliver,
I hope that sometime in the future that you run for a higher office.
No way. I don't want him compromised by that kind of position. He needs to be free to attack wherever necessary and whoever necessary.
"The cariocas, as they call themselves(...)"
Sheesh, could that news lady sound any more condescending?
I never watch the opening ceremonies of the Olympic games. I haven't yet figured out a way to place a bet on a parade.

Okay listen up chicken nugget, why are most of your videos not available in Australia. p.s. I love your show.
It's killing me. We want you in Australia you bloody bugger!
he forgot to mention that the world now has an international baby oil shortage thanks to the tongan guy.
As a Patriots fan who aslo looks forward to both Olympics when they happen, I love how Tom Brady's wife was a part of the Rio opening ceremony. I also LOVE the theme of Toyko's summer Olympics in 2020 of Nuclear disarmament as the 75th year anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will happen during the final days of the games
The Olympics Games was amazing!!! I loved everything.
Even when not talking about politics, he shows his bias by using an exception to the refugees. Thanks Oliver. Sweden would love you. Please move there.
>Refugees
>Woo!
Yep, they're Americans.
As a Swede I can confirm that we love him. Everyone watches him.
What would you like him to say? "Oh these refugees shouldn't been accepted, we should just leave them to rot..."
We do love him. And if he were to come here we'd welcome him with open arms.
However we can clearly see that he serves a greater purpose in your country. You need him more.
+Amanda Larsson you are so ugly
also, Santos-Dumont invented the airplane
Umm, no, he didn't, his first flight was in 1906, and the Wright Brothers' was in 1903.
+CockatooDude ah-shut up.
With an slingshot
Werner M. What? Just because I'm right?
+CockatooDude Technically the Wright brothers' plane didn't take off by itself, they flew but not how the planes work as we know today, they used a slingshot to do it... so it's unfair consider they were the first ones to thrive the race
Michel Temer looks like a really old David Cassidy.
Omg couldn't stop laughing throughout the whole video
To be fair, that poem probably sounds better in portuguese!
I freaking hate Michel Temer, he's an awful person. Although, a decent poet and a very relevant jurist. And yes, is unfair to translate a poem. And again, i freaking hate this dude.
