    I'm afraid because that Syrian girl exists. It's like with Superman; she's amazing and powerful, but she makes me realize how meak I am.

    • @Widdekuu91
      @Widdekuu91 5 лет назад +9

      @gnbman
      Then again, too much of that harsh attitude is unhealthy.
      As a simple example, she's not going to find the same joy in her breakfast as I do.
      If she sees a broken rusk, she'll eat it and mumble; 'It's going to end up as shit anyway, what does it matter' whereas I (if I have the time) get butter and 'glue' it back together, because it makes me happy.
      Ór I take the pieces, turn it into a little treat and put peanutbutter (or nutella or jam or fruithail or hagelslag or other bread-spreads) on the different pieces of rusk and treat myself to a tiny tiny maximized-opportunity-rusk.
      Now, that can brighten your day. Whereas others need to do 5 laps in a pool.
      And others just want to watch BakeOff with their dog on their lap. As long as you're *happy* and not hurting anyone while doing that, it's o.k.
      Just because you find joy in other things than the Olympian Syrian swimmers, doesn't mean you are meak. Emotionally hardened traumatized people aren't necessarily a good example to mirror onto your own life.

    • @hannabira5905
      @hannabira5905 5 лет назад +5

      @@Widdekuu91 those are some good points and you worded it very well! One should never feel bad just because others have been through worse than them. Not only is suffering not a competition, but also is it important to keep in mind that severe trauma really isn't this inspirational, glorious and badass thing it often gets made out to be. It just sucks most of the time. So one should never feel guilty for being well off. That's not 'meak', it's just normal and healthy.

    • @Widdekuu91
      @Widdekuu91 5 лет назад +9

      @@hannabira5905
      Exactly :) Sometimes people have learned how to handle their trauma's or turn them into good things (I've been through some stuff and it probably somehow made me a better writer and artist) but as you mentioned, there's a lot of shitty moments besides the good ones. It takes a lot of energy to transfer nightterrors or emotional fears and trauma-thoughts into a story or artwork.
      J.K. Rowling used her mother's death as a motivation for some of the powerful moments in Goblet of Fire, yet you wouldn't want your mom to die, in order to be able to 'write better about loss.' It's just a little opportunity that comes with the misery.
      And, I mean, some people feel that crying out 'Aahh that hurts!" over a cut in your hand as 'weak'.
      But I now feel that crying out over a cut in your hand is brave.
      I've been told to stfu about pain or sadness a lot of times in the past and being able to open your mouth and voice your problems or pain is important and often very difficult.
      I admire people that demand a bandaid or say things along the lines of; 'No, mr. Manager, I will nót start this meeting untill I have peed first. I was busy before the meeting started, and I need to pee and I wíll pee before we start." And then just walk out to the toilet.
      Standing up for yourself and your feelings is very important :)

    SHREK
    Once upon a time there was a lovely
    princess. But she had an enchantment
    upon her of a fearful sort which could
    only be broken by love's first kiss.
    She was locked away in a castle guarded
    by a terrible fire-breathing dragon.
    Many brave knights had attempted to
    free her from this dreadful prison,
    but non prevailed. She waited in the
    dragon's keep in the highest room of
    the tallest tower for her true love
    and true love's first kiss. (laughs)
    Like that's ever gonna happen. What
    a load of - (toilet flush)
    Allstar - by Smashmouth begins to play. Shrek goes about his
    day. While in a nearby town, the villagers get together to go
    after the ogre.
    NIGHT - NEAR SHREK'S HOME
    MAN1
    Think it's in there?
    MAN2
    All right. Let's get it!
    MAN1
    Whoa. Hold on. Do you know what that
    thing can do to you?
    MAN3
    Yeah, it'll grind your bones for it's
    bread.
    Shrek sneaks up behind them and laughs.
    SHREK
    Yes, well, actually, that would be a
    giant. Now, ogres, oh they're much worse.
    They'll make a suit from your freshly
    peeled skin.
    MEN
    No!
    SHREK
    They'll shave your liver. Squeeze the
    jelly from your eyes! Actually, it's
    quite good on toast.
    MAN1
    Back! Back, beast! Back! I warn ya!
    (waves the torch at Shrek.)
    Shrek calmly licks his fingers and extinguishes the torch. The
    men shrink back away from him. Shrek roars very loudly and long
    and his breath extinguishes all the remaining torches until the
    men are in the dark.
    SHREK
    This is the part where you run away.
    (The men scramble to get away. He laughs.)
    And stay out! (looks down and picks
    up a piece of paper. Reads.) "Wanted.
    Fairy tale creatures."(He sighs and
    throws the paper over his shoulder.)

      +Danny B He states in the comments that HBO doesn't strike videos as long as they're shorter than five minutes. This is also why a lot of his older "content" was removed and required slight cuts to be reuploaded. Also, I don't think John Oliver is stealing views from consumer. I don't think he even knows who consumer is.

    I got furiously angry with NBCs coverage of the Opening Ceremony, or should I say Commercial Marathon, seriously the first hour was useless talking heads babbling on and on, then when the show actually started they would show 5 minutes of ceremony, then go to 5 minutes of commercials, I was ready to switch off after about 3/4 hour.... luckily I think they locked NBCs programing director in a closet and the coverage got better, but geeez that first hour was maddening!

      The refugee team is simply giving the athletes back their opportunity to compete when it was unjustly ripped away from them due to war. I don't see anything wrong with it. If you're gonna argue the Olympics are pulling politics into sport, well banning the Russian team over a doping scandal so close to the start of the event is a better case of that.

    • @zcrib3

      As a Brazilian, I have to say politics has a lot to do with this Olympics. Millions disappeared from our pockets when we only had coins. If you look for information, you'll see a strong connection between the people's feelings and this politicians. There's no civil war, tho. Is more like people protesting a lot against the corruption. Better than sit around and cry like babies.
      Either way, I'm cheering for the Olympics. That was a mistake, but let's try to do this right.

      Yes I agree that politics has alot to do with olympics in general. This kind of discussion is fine anywhere else. But once the games have started and I am just watching the TV broadcast of the events I don't want to hear about commentators tying politics to specifc countries. It should not matter. They are just athletes who are from these places. Talk about specific atheletes or the sports but don't sum up a country "There was a coup there couple of weeks ago".

    as a non-American, a few questions please to Americans after watching countless John Oliver amazing videos:
    1. Seems like in the US major TV networks are silent (have a pact with politics) about problematic issue. BUT seems like the local, cable news is doing a lot of good job investigating stuff. Am I right?
    2. Picture of USA by John Oliver is this: a sham place where deregulated business will do anything they can (and work with politicians) to rip you off your money. Am I right?
    3. Bouns question: how would European version of this show look like? Can EU be as fucked as the US?
    thanks

    • @TSK_Dillards
      @TSK_Dillards 8 лет назад +3

      Well John Oliver gives everyone a look at the downsides of America with very few stories of the good stuff going on. So in general his show is much more negative about the U.S. than it is in reality.
      1. To some extent they can be but local news is only local news. They're responsible for telling everyone in the town whats going on. Something happening in Chicago is something I can't really help when I'm in Atlanta. Major news networks do cover some important stuff but either in less detail or in stuff that is more apparent nationally because their audience is the entire U.S. not just chicago or just Atlanta for example. So you are partly right but there's a good reason for it. Local news can still be just as corrupt or more so as big news stations though.
      2. USA isn't really a sham. It's still the best place in the world in my obviously somewhat biased opinion. I wouldn't live here if the U.S. was as bad as you describe. Businesses are somewhat regulated but they're definitely irresponsible and are a problem. They however hire the most people in the US and everyone wants to make money so if they don't rip us off they don't make money. Business and politicians go hand in hand unfortunately so you are again partly right but you take it too far as again John Oliver only tells of the bad parts of business or at least mostly. They do great stuff as well but its hard to come by. The average american isn't nearly as ripped off.
      3. EU is basically as fucked as the US if not more. The EU is threatening to fall apart with Greece in the toilet and Britain already trying to leave. Germany and a few countries like it are doing the brunt of work to keep it together especially considering the smaller countries in Europe unintentially causing problems. Business can impact politicians in the EU as much as in the US (usually not because US has been around longer than EU but still). The larger countries such as Germany dictate most of the policies in the EU which smaller countries don't like. Europe is still rather closed off in terms of immigration so they remain somewhat bigoted at least in terms of racism. This is why refugees are made out to be such a big problem when in reality the US accepts just as many in fact more than the EU but doesn't really make as big of a deal as for example Britain or Germany make of it. Many of your local news stations do the same thing as ours so there's essentially no difference there. Everyone assumes the US to be this perfect place of hard work at 40 hour weeks makes you very successful but that isn't the case. Hard work in the US is working 50-60 hour weeks for 40 hours a week pay to be in the middle class. Working your ass off while getting ripped off by other people trying to make their living. Whatever issues you see about the US is usually just as much a problem for the EU as well.
      Hope that helps (from a college student in Georgia, US so you know any potential bias)

      +Jack Xhemali America is absolutely as bad as it's shown on this show if not much worse. And one of the worst things about us is that pretty much anytime someone tries to actually show all the bad stuff about us, a ton of people then make your argument, which is basically that "Well there is some bad stuff in America but no one ever talks about the good, which somehow outweighs or even negates the bad". It's a BS argument which tries to basically sweep all the negative, of which their is an INSANE amount, under the rug. We need to focus on the bad, rather than the so called good, most of which is not really in any way meaningful.

    • @junkyatv
      @junkyatv 8 лет назад +2

      +Jack Xhemali
      He's not really giving "everyone a look at the downsides of America." His target audience is American (his income from RUclips is insubstantial in comparison to what he probably gets from HBO) and his intent is to inform about aspects of the country that we may encounter in our lives but never knew the negative qualities of (a lot of his pieces have boring titles because of this). It's just investigative journalism made interesting with a comedic touch.

    • @lotoex
      @lotoex 8 лет назад

      To answer question 2; the business in America is slightly over regulated in some ways (making it hard to break in) and a little under in others (allowing price gauging in some cases), however I feel as though it is moving in the right way. Also the country is very big and your experience will very greatly from state to state. The two worst things however are people wanting to not work together and people wanting to work at a job instead of for themselves.

    • @mikewazowski350

      +Diviance incorrect, there are versions that are trees and versions that are palms. palms have no limbs. trees have limbs. palms have fibrous trunks. trees have woody trunks. palms do not have a cambium, but trees do. so palms are a different classification than trees. (edit) and I will add that the term "tree" is the same as using the word "weed" to describe a plant. People say "palm trees" because they are tall and have leafy tops, but bamboo can be so too and they aren't trees, they are grasses (which palms are more closely related to than the tree variety).

      oh god get the fuck out of here with your double standard bullshit. I can complain right now if I want to. if you're going to be against sexual objectification, lead by example. these double standards are by products of feminism that's lost its way. "since you objectify us, we'll objectify you". Instead of acknowledging that sexual attraction is a totally organic thing, and sexuality is just human nature, you want to punish our most innate qualities.. you're also conflating sexual objectification with sexual harassment. being groped and getting fired for not being sexy enough is harassment not objectification (not to mention illegal). i advise you to look up what both terms actually mean. Also take note that men dont give a shit at highly sexual depictions of men in movies, tv, print media and advertising (yes there is a ton of it) but we don't give a shit. This is generally a female complaint, and I don't know a single woman that doesn't want to be perceived as sexy or be desirable... so this is mostly a complaint of women who are haters and aren't perceived as attractive. Simplying commenting that a woman is hot, attractive, or sexy is seen as objectification by misguided feminists. You literally can't even say a woman looks good.
