I just paid a guy $59 for a guy to come and try to sell me a $3k replacement job. I tried troubleshooting the thermopile isolated and then the thru the switch. The guy that came out never tried to troubleshoot anything or tell me or try to check the reset on the switch‼️ 2min into this video, I now have hot water and a happy wife, and saved a lot of money on a unnecessary purchase. THANK YOU‼️

Don't forget it wasn't that long ago that you needed to call someone out for help, but nowadays there are guys like Pat around who share their expertise with us. This video is the absolute perfect step by step checklist to ascertain _exactly_ what's wrong with your gas water heater. When it's boiled down to essentials it might not sound like much, but there's many years of troubleshooting and repairing very neatly sewn into every sentence, and it takes another person with years of experience to fully appreciate what's being offered for free. On top of all that it's so clear & concise on what to do and how to do it, that it's easily understandable to a layman, home-owner or Do-It-Yourself-er. Great video mate.

We haven't had hot water for nearly a week. I've relit the pilot a few times in the past, but this time it just wouldn't work. Sparker is fine and lights the pilot no problem, but as soon as I let go of the knob the flame dies.
I've watched all kinds of videos online, talked to people, and prayed hard. Yours is the first video I've come across that explains the button that gets tripped. I pushed it and all my problems were solved.

  • @GaryMarkowski

Excellent professional guidance! Here is another tip. If the water heater pilot light is not igniting, it may be the spark is not strong enough. There is a wire coming from the igniter. Disconnect this wire and spray contact cleaner on it and reconnect it. Then turn the dial to pilot. Wait at least 5 minutes. While the dial is pointing to pilot, press and hold the dial, and click the igniter every 10 seconds until you hear a subtle dull pop (which is an indication the pilot is lit). Keep holding the dial in and keep clicking every 15 seconds until you see the light start flashing every 3 seconds or so. If not lit within 2 minutes, stop and try again after 15 minutes.

Thanks for the great video Pat. We Rheem Guardian System Fury Gas Water Heater (EverKleen Self Cleaning Water Heater) Model 22V50F1 50 Gallons using 38,000 BTHU. The heat gauge was set to almost High for heat and the broiler was in full high, yet the water was just lukewarm. I was watching this video to see what was wrong, and I noticed it was not dirty, as this tank has nothing to clean, it does not have a indicate control either, so no codes and it was made in May 2007 (maybe that is why it has no indication controller). I turned the red water temp gauge from HOT to one notch before the WARM (the white line) and now it seems to be making hot water.

    • @PROSDIY
      @PROSDIY  4 года назад

Thank you The Power Of Your Voice Podcast! It sounds like it could be a damaged dip tube. The dip tube is a tube that is extends inside the cold water supply of the water heater. It directs the cold water to the bottom of the tank and the hot water is taken off the top. If this tube is damaged, the cold water will mix with the hot water towards the top of the tank. This will give you a shortage of hot water or lukewarm water. Do you find your hot water doesn't last long?

Woke up Saturday morning to no hot water, immediate thought was bad thermocouple (thermopile in this case, also something new I learned), but it was lack of combustible air that caused the thermal switch to pop. Reset the switch, vacuumed the dog hair, all set. Thank you!

Thank you so much!! All this this time we could have hot water. We all thought it was because of the utility company cutting off supply for some kind of maintenance. Turns out the pilot was out. Finally have hot water after 1 week of cold shower. You're a life saver!!

Thanks for this video. My gf just moved into a new home and the pilot was off. I had it set to pilot but wasn't pushing it in to let the gas flow. Now we're good :)

I had things stored to close to the vents and I had to reset it. I’m redoing my basement and moved stuff to one half of the basement and basically smothered the heater. All clear and breathing easy now👍🏽
Thanks a lot for the tips.

Wow! Loved your video! Short, to the point and easy to understand, even for a novice. You covered EVERYTHING! I didn't even learn this much being trained as a Maintenance Technician. You showed the basics, and then some! And ALSO some tricks I never heard of! You're awesome dude!

Very helpful video! No hot water this morning, my pilot is out, my stove will barely light. That’s strange...so no gas supply. Check my propane meter...empty. Little did I know my pool heater burns 4 gallons of propane every hour to heat my pool. First time owning a pool, lesson learned.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS,
After a long holiday I go take a shower and no hot water. Went to my trusty Home Improvement 1-2-3 book but no help. Half way into your video you gave me the answer on how to trouble shoot.
You are a life saver. No one has ever told me of the breaker switch on the thermocouple. My daughters think I am a hero. Naaaa I have to give credit where credit is due.

My basement has recent flooded(3-5") of water. I noticed that around the tray under the heater there is some moisture. Unfortunately, the guy who installed my water heater, its around 2 years old, he did not place it on bricks to elevate it. I'll try your method and hope I'm more successful.

Thank you. Great troubleshooting steps! Made me realize my new (4 years old) WH does not have a thermopile switch that I can access, so that's something to look for when you're buying a new one. BTW mine came back on after a simple re-spark.
