Back in the day I ran many, many GEs in my thirty two years with the UP and held a special place for these old bangers . But flavorite sound was back when I was a kid and we would run down to the UP right a way and watch those old GP 9s whining up to pull that drag out of town.
Funny how a 1st generation merger seems like old school now! :P The sentiment is appreciated nonetheless. I'm fond of the FL, SS, and CSX stealth gray / blue schemes.
Awesome classic video! I had the privilege of seeing these units as a kid but did not have the appreciation that I do now it's sad that they are long gone now. I'm an EMD guy but I have always loved the CHUG of a U boat or C30-7!
Very nice. Last time I saw a Seaboard was back when I was young and lived in NC. Plus......I need to meet with ya'll in W.Newton. Gets kinda boring around here (train wise). I agree with the others, keep them coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm so happy all this old footage is surfacing of the SCL/L&N locomotives- i grew up watching those in indiana, and for the longest time i could never find them here on youtube
@bennoach, good question. The story I always heard is that the locomotive shop in Cumberland didn't like GE's. The only part of the Chessie system with any GE's was C&O, and they were maintained at the C&O shops in Clifton Forge, VA. I always thought Chessie was a little dumb for not buying more GE's.
Let me know when your in my area, maybe you can give me some weather lessons for my railroad... Also, a good response on the older stuff, so I will add stuff as time permits. Take care, and thanks for watching. Jackmp294
Wish the clarity of the video were better, but still a nice video of classic GEs. The first unit is a C30-7 in Family Lines paint with an EMD GP40-2 and two GE B36-7s behind it. The final GE in this consist (in Seaboard System paint!) is a very rare, clean U36B. So cool with that pretty paint job and the Blomberg trucks. I was at Sand Patch many times in the 1990s but never lucky enough to see a U36B.
I love how the old GE's chug like that now the ES series sucks they need to bring these back and I would like GE more EMD engines sound awesome now better than the GEVO stuff.
That is MUSIC to my ears! So love the sound of a reved GE U unit as well as the full blast of a EMD SD-40-2. 8-) Why cant they make them sound like that anymore? :-(
@htc6600 You should try to get to Sand Patch atleast once! It is a neat place to see, and pretty easy to chase. If you ever do head up there, let me know...
Yep, and I bet a lot of them came from nearby L&N, the other big coal hauler. A retired worker said GE's, at least in the 70s and 80s, were great for hauling heavy loads over steep grades. Why didn't B&O every go with GE? Did they figure their generation of EMDs were sufficient?
@tramwayz Fantastic! Helpers on the rear and all. Sound pretty good, but not as good as the chug of the GE's. But that smoke!!! Holy cow!! Do they all smoke like that in Russia! The activist would be protesting that smoke here the the USA. Thanks for sending me that like! Take care, and greetings from the USA...
Awesome! Are they 89ft flat cars at the front of the train? Out of curiosity I bought 2 n-scale 89ft's made by Con-Cor last week because i'd never seen real ones!
What causes the chugging to stop and start again? For instance, at 0:22 it sounds like the chugging stops altogether only to pick back up (at lower RPM) a second or two later.
@1jackdk, they are (I mean russian 2TE10) 2-stroke engines and I hate them. GE sounds better, yeah. Even american 2-stroke engines sound better than 2TE10.
Jack ,this is really good stuff. LOL even with the banging and rattling of the old GEs you can still hear the whine of the EMD... Just love it, THANKS

Same here, I agree! BUT, the GEVO's can also sound good too. Check out this gem:

That's really neat to see. It's from about 13 years before I worked there.
Always enjoy that classic GE "Chug-chug-chug" music! They're actually drowning out the turbo-whine from the lone EMD in the consist, LOL!.

It's not often that you're glad to see some GE units.
Brings back lots of memories seeing the old paint. Thanks for sharing and post all you got.
Those are some things you will never forget. Take care, Jack
Nice sounding units! The U-boats have to be my favorite GE model
love the sound on this one!

I did my student trip in the 70s with MT coal buckets to No. Platte with a GE lead and three GPS... HA, On cold Nebraska nite....
Thanks for the videos! Sand Patch is one more place I'd love to experience but I know I'll never get there.
Jack, quality is quality no matter how old it is and this is quality material, I thoroughly enjoyed it...5* Bob
Man, those GE's are loud!
Great video Jack!
the cutting sides show the many layers of sediments laid down and compacted during The Flood about 4,350 years ago.

For sure. Ol;d VHS stuff. Wish we could go back in time with todays HD cameras. That would be fantastic. Thanks for watching...

those GE'S sure was chugging
I wish I'd lived to see the time when all GE's didn't look the same.

Remember the Family Lines!

Adam Hill Maybe the engineer Lowering The throttle, Maybe..
Adam Hill 4 cycle action on the Ge's.
Tower, not towel there Jack, but boy they sound great!
Wasn't this back when GE was outsourcing their diesels?
Sure as hell don't sound like the GE of today.
Nice Video! I have never seen those GE's.
And how long is the Sand Patch Tunnel?
Marco393 This is a late reply, but the tunnel is 4,475 feet long.
Do you have a video of chessie GE's?
1:50
