  • Gloria Ryan's father helped build the Moffat Tunnel in Grand County, Colorado in the 1920s. The Moffat tunnel is used for railroad and water delivery under the Continental Divide. Denver Water acquired the water tunnel in the 1930s. This is the story of Gloria's return to see the Moffat Tunnel one final time in her lifetime.

This is truly a great feat of engineering. One of the greatest achievements of the 20th Century. Heroic men constructed this in subzero Colorado winters. Many more men died than reported in building the tunnel, as developing pneumonia from harsh working conditions were not counted among the lives sacrificed to this project. There is no such thing as 'free water.' People on the west side of the mountain suffered from the diversion of water. Many lost their livelihood, lost farms.

It's quite extraordinary. I've been on both California Zephyr's twice now, and it's really cool to go through.

I went through the Moffat Tunnel on the original California Zephyr. Sitting in one of the dome cars. A sight to behold.

OMG, I have to do this. My Grandfather also helped build Rollins pass and the tunnel. He then was the station mater in Kremmling for the rest of his life. Thank you for this video, now all I have to do is figure out how to get a ride through the tunnel.

Denver got the water tunnel compliments of N.W. Colorado counties which paid for the railroad tunnel. The water tunnel was said needed to build the main tunnel but not really. It was all planned in advance to get Denver more water, west slope water from the Fraser river. FREE WATER. I love riding thru the tunnel today and have several times. David Moffat was a man way ahead of his times and used his personal fortune to build his railroad. Sad he didn't live to see the tunnel open to traffic.
