I am happy it is meeting and surpassing your expectaions and while I don't plan to play the game, you made a great video about what it would have been like to be invested in the series.
While I haven't spent as much time with FF VII as you have Marty, I can still understand those feelings you have thanks to games like TUNIC, Everybody's Golf on PS4, and Crash Bandicoot 4 It's About Time😄💖
...somehow, the fact that the sequel to FF7 Remake is not only *not* a colossal, never-to-exist prank on the audience, but is going to be released for the general public in *less than a week* had not at all sunk in, even with the release of the demos. This made it real somehow, and yet, now that it has, I'm filled with what feels a lot like fear. FF7 Remake itself felt like a maddened fever dream in initial premise and in final execution, but given its scope I always felt a kind of certainty that it could make whatever it was doing work, given the subset of its source material it covered. But here, the question of 'can they possibly manage to land the plane on this one?' can't be dismissed like that, and so, as another person who holds the original terribly dear, I'm both excited beyond words, and terribly afraid.
@@ryujin8754 You may not believe me when I say this, but I'd actually forgotten the line that you were referencing even existed! Nevertheless, be it accidental or not, the point is well taken - I ought to embrace whatever this new, old story may bring.
I am willing to put money down we see it announced within the next 2 years if not sooner. Given that Intermission was deep ground focused, and they didn't cut Genesis being picked at the end of Reunion, it would make sense to do Dirge in order to finish off that story line. Plus it would probably fit better now with the remake games, and the franchise as a whole, rather than when stuff was still heavily turn based.

Really excited for this. I'm a big Final Fantasy fan though i never finished the original release of VII, but I thought the Remake was an interesting and expansive take on the game, good for someone who wasn't super familiar with the game as it was. This looks even better.
I'm someone who has played the original game more times then i can count, but never seen or played any of the extended universe things other then Advent children, the fact that Kyrie and Leslie are callbacks to things i'd never experience never made me lost on the characters. It was only afterwards i found out they were callbacks. As long as they do as good a job setting up the characters i don't know in Rebirth as they did in Remake, i won't even know i've missed something until i start watching spoiler reviews and discussions. But the people who do know them get to embody the leonardo meme. I call that a win/win.
6:10 I really appreciate this ending bit. I'm a fan of the FF series and played FF7 Remake without ever playing the original. Sure I knew some of the most important story beats from the original game and I watched Advent Children once back in like 2007 but my overall knowledge of the game was pretty low. And as much fun as I had with the mechanics of the game, I personally couldn't give the remake a rating higher than a 7, funny enough. I come to this series to be told an epic story which is hard to get when so much of FF7 Remake assumed you already knew about these characters and this world. Sure, I could follow the general arc, but the overall importance of certain characters and scenes or their relevance to the plot at that moment was often hard to parse. I've played the OG in the interim so I imagine I'll have less of an issue with Rebirth than I did Remake, but all honesty, I just don't think that's a great or accessible way to tell a story. It reminded me of the disappointment of FF15 (tho not nearly as bad): a story fully undermined by having a lot of its backstory and some of its emotional peaks removed from the game and isolated to tie-in anime and films. Still excited to play Rebirth and thanks for the review
I hear you. I was a complete newcomer to the Final Fantasy franchise and I played FF7Remake because I thought a full-overhaul remake of FF7 would be a perfect starting point. I loved the combat and the presentation, but but, as a result of it actually being a timeline-sequel and not a remake, the story kept losing me whenever it assumed that I already know the plot of FF7.
You need context from the og game, Crisis Core, Before Crisis, Advent Children, Dirge Of Cerberus, On The Way To A Smile, The Kids Are Alright: A Turks Side Story, and Traces of Two Pasts (the last three of which are the light novels) in order to understand what is even happening in the remake trilogy. And that sucks.
I would assert that in order to understand EVERY NUANCE in 7R and 7R2, you need the background of all the rest of the Compilation content. By contrast, if you're playing 7R and 7R2 WITHOUT that context, they still tell a cohesive and coherent story on their own.
I played Crisis Core and when I saw how they bungled the ending, I just noped out of any game beyond the original. I'm done with the expanded world of FFVII. It's just the OG FFVII for me.
As someone who loves the original but hated the "Nomura"fication of the story, how much did Nomura ... Nomura all over this one? (I am aware he's not 100% responsible but he ran Kingdom Hearts into the ground and the changes in Remake fit his style so I'm going to blame him)
I thought the whole point of the remakes was because Squares' 3 most iconic characters are unusable in a modern world of branding as is, with one of them dead and the other two stories completed by the end. But all reviews do seem to indicate Aerith is not escaping her fate. Now I still think in the 3rd install they'll gather the dragonballs and Jessie, Biggs and Aerith with be brought back by Shinran....see what I did there...But I am surprised they didn't do a choice system that allows for a chance to change the story.
I think the weirdest part of this is that while I usually resent the price of big ticket games, I genuinely feel like they could put this out for £100 and I'd be happy to pay. It would have been so easy to just rush out a half baked pile of crap and slap a logo on it, and I've seen it done so many times in the past. Remake was just wonderful even if it was shorter than I would have liked, so if this one is the same, only more, I'll be overjoyed.
I not sure I am going to pick this one up anytime soon. I guess I just wanted more of a HD remaster in turn based than what we got, so after the first one I am just not invested at the moment. But that's okay! I am glad people are loving it, enjoy!
I'm happy they leaned into the weird. I was afraid they wouldn't hit some of the more eccentric aspects as to make it "realistic", so I'm glad it captures the essence of the older games
Speaking as a complete newcomer to the entire Final Fantasy franchise who has only played FF7Remake, I can say that the combat, presentation and characters of FF7Remake were amazing, as was a lot of the story, but every time it started being "meta" with stuff like the Arbiters of Fate, it would lose me, and when it became clear that it wasn't actually a remake at all, but a weird timeline-sequel, it completely lost me. Watching this review of Rebirth, the footage of the combat, characters and different locations brought back the feeling I had from seeing the FF7Remake trailers: the feeling that this game looks absolutely amazing. Then I'd see the Arbiters in the footage and think, "...Oh, right; never mind. Maybe after I play FF7."
I can understand feeling a bit annoyed at that, but at the same time I can recommend just playing the original. I played it to about the halfway point as a kid (which I find quite impressive seeing how I didn't actually understand English yet...) before my save file got corrupted. Got it on Steam last year and decided to finally beat it, and it has aged incredibly well. The only thing holding it back is the scuffed localization, otherwise it's still a surprisingly fresh experience.
@@penttikoivuniemi2146 I have FF7 on my Switch and I've been meaning to play it. I got it sometime after realizing that FF7R was a meta timeline-sequel and not a remake. Now, that was likely corporate-speak that he doesn't actually believe, given that he and Nomura have been against a lot of the changes that Kitase has proposed, but that's even worse than if it were something Hamaguchi actually believed. It also doesn't change that I wanted to like FF7R; I was loving the combat, the presentation and the characters, and yet, I have to pass on FF7Rebirth because I know I won't understand it.

Game for a generation that stopped dreaming about the future and kept dreaming about the past. So much of this review seems to be happy about graphical upgrade, similar to those who soyface over Luke Skywalker recreated through artificial intelligence deepfake technology. A bummer that the review hints at but does not expand on its meta commentary, the only real reason I’d play it.
I still have fond memories of the first and just don't have the time to play this. It looks lovely though, great to see everything exactly how I remember it looking. 😂
I don't know if we can trust this guy's credentials, I mean when was the last time he even consumed all media relating to final fantasy 7 including even the books and movies?
I don't much care for the game, one called 'The Long Dark' really turned me off of piecemeal segmented games but I may return to both when they are done, that said it is always very nice to see someone so enthused about a game that fits them like a glove.
Thanks for the review. I absolutely loved the first one and thought the story was really good despite the game not getting grades that were good enough for what it was. Will not forget ign gave an 8 because the journalist decided to just be harsh and ignore a lot of great things on the game.

I am mega excited to see what they do with it. I'm also hoping that when all 3 are done they roll them into 1 massive game. They probably won't, but I can hope!
@@maninblack3410 i noticed they already have a bundle of 1-2 up. Playtime being long dont bother me, I tend to pick up a game and put hundreds of hours in anyway, as long as the story and gameplay support it.
Yeah the demo really grounded me in the reality of the game's technical limitations, but this review really does excite me for one of my favourite RPGs getting a second part to its large-scale remake. Very excited for next week.
Nomura is still writing it., without an ounce of a sense of tone or cohesion, so the story is doomed to disappoint from the start. The rest of the appeal is just nostalgia.
nojima is writing it... i still dont understand why to this day everyone just assumes nomura writes every game he works on. EDIT: nojima literally cowrote the original ff7 with the original ff7 director kitase who is producing this game and gives his approval.
@0:56 so it still does the whole meta narrative commentary shtick in rebirth? Well darn. Guess I'm glad I never got a PS5 then. That stuff absolutely killed the experience. Was hoping they'd step away from it in this one. Guess this game just isn't for me. And thats fine. But dang.
Not gonna hold my breath. I didn't like the Remake, and I'm pretty sure I won't like this one. Especially since I just know they're going to milk a few more sequels given the pace we're looking at.
They should've really pulled out ALL the stops if they were going to reference the whole FFVII expanded universe: Give us references to Cloud showing upbin Ivalice and becoming befuddled by a girl who looks like and has the same job as Aerith, or wrapping his sword in a bandage to try and kill Hercules in the coliseum on Mt. Olympus so that Hades will lead him to Sephiroth. Eh, maybe they're saving those for Part III...
And all of it delivered in overpriced bite sized chunks, painstakingly reimagined for "modern audiences" through the lens of Squeenix's Ethics Department. What's not to like...?
Not much. Game looks and sounds great. I too, miss Cloud being alluded to being sexually assaulted by a room of half naked men, but I can let some of the past stay in the past.
Play in Japanese to fix the voice acting problem. As for bloated content we don’t know just yet but if you mean with bloated the characters added, storylines from the OG lengthened, combat simulator, challenges etc.. then stay clear. It’s probably even more considering this one is open world.
Thanks for ensuring the image of Aerith kneeling in prayer overlapped with Marty saying the word "heart", Marty and Eric. I needed that psychological gut-punch first thing this morning. Oh, it didn't stop there, did it? 😂
Still a hard pass until I know 100% Square isn't pulling more Kingdom Hearts shit with the story. Been burned hard too many times by them at this point. Could have done without the open world elements I'm hearing about though I'm happy to hear they kept the mini games, even if they apparently require perfect execution to get the rewards.
Thanks for watching the video! This game is truly something special.

I am mega excited to see what they do with it. I'm also hoping that when all 3 are done they roll them into 1 massive game. They probably won't, but I can hope!
On PC this will be beyond majestic.
But is it complete now? Or is there still supposed to be a 3rd?
There is supposed to be a third one; the third one will be the last one.
@@matthewmuir8884 i think ill just wait for the complete edition then, even if it on Ps6. Lol
@@maninblack3410 i noticed they already have a bundle of 1-2 up. Playtime being long dont bother me, I tend to pick up a game and put hundreds of hours in anyway, as long as the story and gameplay support it.
Why would it be 5+ years for the third part? The gap between Remake and Rebirth was 4 years
@@IronBahamutgames are always taking longer to make. Keep that as a core assumption.
Marty, love ya, but this video has to go into the backlog until I'm done with FF7Rebirth. And right now I'm a Sea 'o' Stars boy and I just can't stop.
Me? Gongaga
Waiting for the PC port...
I skipped the remakes and installed the original and then some mods. Its actually quite fun. And saved me lots of money.
Fantastic review, Marty. It's been a treat watching all the replays.
The demo's technical issues had kinda deflated my hype tbh, but this lit the fire right back up.
Yeah the demo really grounded me in the reality of the game's technical limitations, but this review really does excite me for one of my favourite RPGs getting a second part to its large-scale remake. Very excited for next week.
Should I wait for the whole trilogy to finish before starting? I know there will be a all in one edition one day.
So your going to wait till 2028 at the earliest to play 3 games?😂
I just wanted an update FF7. Not a new Nomura plot. But I respect your enjoyment.
So fucking excited!
Nomura is still writing it., without an ounce of a sense of tone or cohesion, so the story is doomed to disappoint from the start. The rest of the appeal is just nostalgia.
Basically.
nojima is writing it... i still dont understand why to this day everyone just assumes nomura writes every game he works on.
EDIT: nojima literally cowrote the original ff7 with the original ff7 director kitase who is producing this game and gives his approval.
Has anyone done a spoilerific review yet?
Think they're embargoed against doing that.
Ga min, g
Thank you.
So hyped for this

@0:56 so it still does the whole meta narrative commentary shtick in rebirth?
Well darn. Guess I'm glad I never got a PS5 then. That stuff absolutely killed the experience. Was hoping they'd step away from it in this one.
Guess this game just isn't for me. And thats fine. But dang.
Not gonna hold my breath. I didn't like the Remake, and I'm pretty sure I won't like this one. Especially since I just know they're going to milk a few more sequels given the pace we're looking at.
I wish Fallout New Vegas was remastered like ffVII Rebirth, 🙏
LET'S FUCKIN GOOOOOOOO
I don’t know I played the demo and the combat felt trash.
The story we know is amazing since the 90s.
If I didnt really like Remake, would I be into Rebirth? Or should I avoid it?
My issues were the voice acting/dialogue and bloated filler content
Play in Japanese to fix the voice acting problem. As for bloated content we don’t know just yet but if you mean with bloated the characters added, storylines from the OG lengthened, combat simulator, challenges etc.. then stay clear. It’s probably even more considering this one is open world.
The anime bullshit is going nowhere.
Maybe try the demo
@@TehPwnographer Thats my concern.
@@karutacowboy7477 Its not out on PC yet.
Thanks for ensuring the image of Aerith kneeling in prayer overlapped with Marty saying the word "heart", Marty and Eric. I needed that psychological gut-punch first thing this morning.
Oh, it didn't stop there, did it? 😂
Expertly said, fine crafted review.
Excellent review 👏🏻
Ah yes, Aerith and Tifa's ... sisterhood. That's definitely what they were going for.
