It has everything I ever wanted from a FF game. a world map, unique towns and cities, ATB combat, a big playable party, playable females & non-humans characters, playable guest characters, minigames & side activities, multiple controllable vehicles, lots of rpg elements and customization options.

9:55 impossibile to disagree with this take imo. The gameplay/combat is so good, it’s a shame to not use it for another story and world. I can already imagine a few groups of characters that would be incredible if iterated like this. FF6 would be insane. Terra plays like a proper black mage and then transforms, she would be insane to watch. meanwhile Strago as a sage, Cyan’s samurai, Celes a mystic knight, Sabin’s monk and there are so many more. I would be so disappointed if SE doesn’t continue with this combat for their next games or remakes.
A lot of games I think will be remastered for the next generation. FF7 Remake and now Rebirth are both in Unreal Engine 4, I can see them being upgraded into Unreal Engine 5 when the third game is finished with a lot more side content and DLC being added. The third game will feature the party parachuting back into Midgar. The new assets they create for the return to Midgar could one day be inserted back into Remake some day.
the fact that he says kalm and grasslands alone make up for all of midgar from remake is insane. I am not rushing the story, I have a feeling I'll be spending more on side content to get the most out of it. If it's anything like witcher 3, the side content will throw me off the main story's immersion. First world problems

Love the idea of open world linear progression combo. Wish Zelda would go to this style of gameplay. BOTW and TOTK lost alot of what makes a Zelda game special by going all in on open air/world insanity. Dont get me wrong it was a nice change for a game or 2 and now they have the buolding blocks to do something better. I love the idea of an open world with linear dungeons and story progression. Nintendo could learn a thing or 2 here.
Yeah, everything I'm hearing about this game is reminding me of what I've been missing from the Zelda series since like...Twilight Princess on the Wii. It sounds like the bar for game of the year is about to be set sky high, and it's only February. Meanwhile, I just finally got back into Elden Ring and am getting close to the end, I've barely touched Baldur's Gate, and now this and then Dragon's Dogma 2 next month...my gaming schedule is probably booked for the next year. 😆
Well, I loved the traditional Zelda games but BOTW and TOTK blew me away and were very special experiences. I’m not sure what Nintendo has to learn since they are two of the most successful games ever and certainly the most for the franchise. BOTW picked up numerous game of the year awards on release. It was voted best game ever on a national TV channel awards in 2021, in Japan, and by over 200 international reviewers in 2021. You can disagree but the awards and huge sales speak for themselves. Nintendo do not have much to learn from Square here or any other company for that matter as they continue to please most people again and again. Square have lost their way for some time and it’s good to see them back on form. It’s also important to note that other reviews have criticized Rebirth for not getting the balance of open world and linear progression right. I’ve heard comments that the pace suffers a lot with some mini games being necessary, and the story suffers for it. There’s also bloating and padding though it seems to be better than remake. Nintendo set out for a very specific open world experience with those games and achieved what they set out to. Some fans of other Zelda games were never going to be happy with an open world but I also remember them complaining that Zelda was too linear and getting stale. Moving forward Nintendo will do something different with Zelda. The success will be determined by sales and official recognition. Some fans of previous games (including BOtW and ToTK)will be unhappy as we see with every FF game.
The best FF ever made is a MASSIVE compliment! I have not seen a single negative review for this game so i'm inclined to believe it. Counting the hours to grab my copy, i can't stop thinking about it. lol
Im taking my first playthrough nice and slow. Im going to savor every second of this game. Unlock everything i possibly can on the first run and get ready for that hard playthrough, and then platinum trophy.
I would say it would be a flaw to have a cancelled type battle system. Final Fantasy has always been about strategy and using the right spell/technique, so I'm glad that still transfers over to this. I'm super hyped.

To be fair to be fair, I did like that they did change the ending, but but, I am not a fan that they butchered that one scene, why did they not just like you know take a moment to do that *iconic scene* first, so it can be more impactful before doing the cough*cough* rewrite shenanigans for seph.
Since beating Rebirth I find myself in the complete opposite camp than the majority. I liked the game but just to see the story (which was soooo dragged out - It was hard to push myself until it picked up in chapter 11). The open world is just hours upon hours of padding which is fine if you’re someone who wants more towers / shrines / excavations (etc) but when you’ve done it once or twice it’s already enough (for me). Strictly from someone who just wanted story and not a mini game compilation, it def didn’t hit the mark. Was it bad? No.. but you could have combined remake into rebirth (minus alllll the padding from both) and that would have made a much better experience for “me.” This will be the first FF title I don’t go replay for extras and/or to platinum.
Facts. I completed grasslands and junon open world missions. I just finished the parade and I’m not looking forward to the next open world section. It’s too tedious.
@@Mr6one8_ tbh I wound up skipping 90% of the open world side content (except the proto relics) outside of that I just did what was on the way to the next story beat. I was bored out of my mind so I completely understand. Not hating on the game as I know a lot of people like the content but it’s not what I was hoping for. Once you are done the game and look back at everything that transpired it’s minuscule to the amount of hours put in. (The pacing feels terrible if you do a lot of SQ’s) story wise I didn’t mind what they did but there simply isn’t enough “substance” to make this 3 games like they are. Again, just my opinion but I am starting to see quite few more come out now.
I think the issue I have with treating this game as a blueprint for the future of the franchise is that it does require you to love or have nostaliga for FF7 to fully embrace it. I don’t really think I’d enjoy what sounds like a bog standard open world with a bunch of minigames and meandering character moments if it starred a brand new cast I don’t have an attachment to. I am not a particular fan of these characters (aside from Barret my beloved) or this world, so this is 100% a skip for me. That said, I think there are things future FF games can pull from this - the combat system looks fun, and the party interactions are nice regardless of the cast. Embracing the camp and goofiness is also good for whatever a FF17 and beyond may be.
How are the items/weapons/armor. The thing I hated about FF16 is it was all the same, no cool things like Benji glove or Ribbon just different attack power.
FF16 is really an action game with cut scenes and side quests. It isn’t really much of an RPG like the other FF games. Even GOW has deeper RPG mechanics of meaningful upgrading weapons and status effects. Rebirth does have cool items weapons and armour with the materia system- just like remake. You can also explore and find secrets and mini bosses as was mentioned in the review.
I mean just look at remake's equipment system and at least expect Rebirth to be nothing less than that😂. I can't see how your issues with 16 will somehow be reflected in Rebirth. When Remake in itself and 16 is already that different to begin with

Yeah, I've been waiting for another boom in gaming. Like the PS3 and Xbox 360 era when all of these new innovative and awesome story-driven games were coming out left and right.
It's crazy just how much they kept in the game, from chocobo types to digging, i keep expecting there's gonna be missing content from the og, but so far, it's been overwhelmingly great. I do like how they've taken pieces from nearly every entry to make a masterpiece.

Interesting review. I'm eager to see how good this game is when it's faithful. And am hooked by the gameplay cycle. Of all things you said here, there is one point I'm sure I'll agree strongly once I reach the end of the game: The combat design being this good is a living testament to how important and favorable it is for Final Fantasy to stick to a design philosophy moving forward instead of frenetically changing everything to the core. Because in the end, if you dedicate to something you'll eventually become more likely to be the best at that thing, instead of being a trend-chaser that is a master of nothing and is left forgotten when the next big trend and FF title hits.
The vibe I’m getting from these reviews is that it’s a great game overall and the story is good *but* we will be back on the meme train like we were after Remake. I understand it has to be over the top / leave us dangling even harder but I really hope it’s not as convoluted / jarring as/ out of place as it was towards the end of Remake.
So excited for tomorrow's release I really hope they fix the blurry mess that is performance mode soon because I'm not playing this in 30 frames a second
I've been running graphics mode and haven't had any problems. Runs great. The only time I tend to run performance modes are with competitive online multiplayers, where every millisecond counts.
I’ve seen so many reviews where people are saying “everything is so good… mostly” or “the characters are handled so well… most of the time” without any context. It’s scaring me a little but I’m still hyped.
I think the game is beyond generous. The combat, the characters , musics and locations… but… unnecessary padding is still there, outdated trudgy mechanics are still there (L2 R2 crawling uuugh), and KH type narrative is definitely not for everyone
I hear you - but what makes me feel a bit better is that the game is sitting at a 93 on OpenCritic, a full 5 points higher than Remake which was amazing. It seems the downfalls of Rebirth are heavily overshadowed by all of the positives. The ONE thing that worries me is I've heard handful of reviewers say it fumbles the ending. But hey - the final installment can clean that up if its true

Ill be honest, I just saw the ending of the game and it was fucking awful...for those who played the original FF7 Nomura took our memories and just took an enormous shit on them, its pretty much sacrilege to this point, gonna play this game on easy just to make it worth the money because its clearly not worth the effort
Random but how freaking cool would it be if they were reusing tracks from previous FF to blend it into a well know track? What I mean is imagine a Sephiroth encounter with "Away" or "Ascension (bahamut fight)" from FF16 blending into One Winged Angel. Bro, the hype would be off charts.
The great thing about this type of combat without the ability to cancel out of an ability into a block for example, is that it makes animation and ability commitment that much more important.
It's pretty clear to me that (in Remake) they basically designed the whole combat system on that risk/reward commitment style attack system. Your main resource (ATB) builds quickly by attacking. But each character's basic attack chain deals the most damage and gains the most ATB from the very last hit hit in the combo. Which means you are rewarded heavily for picking your spots and finding the right opportunity to finish the whole attack chain without getting hit. Because if you get hit mid combo too much, now you need to spend that ATB to heal and yourself instead of dealing more damage. If the game allowed you to cancel attacks into a block/dodge mid combo, then that risk/reward element of the combat system is completely lost and they would have to rebalance the whole thing.
I didn't think that I could actually get more excited for this game, but I am now! I've honestly been getting the sense that this is probably going to be the single best game in the series based on everything that I've heard and I SO hope that this game is raising the bar for future main line FF games and that it will be used as a tentative model moving forward.
I'm glad to hear your take on this game as I've been mostly worried about the story aspects. It excites me to hear what they've accomplished with this, and what that means for the future of the series. But I recall hearing from Hamaguchi that 90% of the Remake staff returned to work on this game, so there was already great working relationships, known/established SMEs, and a lot of continued collaboration from remake. They were able to take what they'd done and improve on it in every way. But w/ main FF titles changing teams and even CBUs across square, does FFXVII+ have a chance of matching Rebirth's quality/quantity? Remake was a great accomplishment with not insignificant flaws, but I guess i'm just worried that sequels will be the only games in the series now that reach this level.

The fact that you mentioned optional dungeons makes me extremely happy. It really did evolve from ff15 in that aspect, while also evolving from 7 remake’s combat. Literally took the the best things from both games and evolved them in one package. That’s insane!
FF7 was the first game I ever bought by myself. I did have a SNES and NES before that, but FF7 and by extension the PSX was the first time I had saved my own money, took the game and console to the counter, and bought it myself without my parents. While not my favourite FF, it's the most special simply due to that fact. Crazy to see this project reach the level of anticipation it is now. There's been remakes I've loved of classic games, Resident Evil 2/3, the Star Ocean Second Story remake, Trials of Mana, etc, but to see a game that marked my first real step into my biggest passion (gaming) receive this much effort put into remaking it, while looking like it's paid off, is incredible. I just wish the shop I bought the original FF7 still existed, cause I would have loved to buy Rebirth from there.

God I am so fuckin stoked for this game I absolutely cannot wait. Like I think its nuts that yeah there are still some naysayers out there, but like the quality has been so on point, so high, and just SO reminiscent of what old Square Soft used to be that the majority of peoples opinions is that they are so stoked to be alive in a time to play this experience and that maybe the company we loved and were so worried about might make a turnaround that we always knew they could.
The wait is harder and harder to bear... The only issue I have from playing the demo may or may not be toggleable in the full game: I can't switch to Cloud's bravery stance from guarding because of synergy shortcuts. I can live without it but it was a major way I played Cloud in Remake, I'd switch to a counter stance with a lot of leeway on the timing. I guess I'll now have to fall back to perfect guarding, I'll say goodbye to the counter attack unless they introduced some kind of counter mechanic on perfect parries which should be awesome, but I guess not since we can still turtle in bravery, we'll have to use it with anticipation and use perfect parry for last second reactions. The only real issue there is that it'll make switching between Remake and Rebirth require some time to switch between styles

People may hate this game and say “this is staining the og” but it isn’t, it is its own thing, it’s different, they use the foundation of ff7 og and build apon it. I think more people need to realize that change is a thing and sometimes you got to except it, i love the change. I except the change, i just love everything except they do have a little to much bloat. I dont mind the whispers after knowing there connected to a character, well some of them, but i love all of it and i think the way there going and its interesting and refreshing. Ill be looking forward to this new, different, version off ff7
The only two parts that I really wanted in this game was Barrett vs Dyne and the end of Cosmo Canyon. I'm so glad that it sounds like those moments have been enhanced.

It sounds amazing. I'm a complete newcomer to Final Fantasy and I got FF7 Remake because I thought a remake of FF7 would be a perfect starting point, only to be confused and lost by everything with the Whispers and where the game assumes the player already knows the plot of FF7. Does FF7 Rebirth also assume the player knows the plot of FF7, or is it more newcomer-friendly than FF7 Remake?
Keeping this vague and spoiler free... FF7 Remake IS a good starting point, it's the beginning of FF7 (basically disc 1 of the OG) - All the things you are confused about (whispers), are new to the remake, so even seasoned players who know the full FF7 story are/were confused. They also added TONS of new content that was never in OG and expand the characters greatly. You are fine playing Remake then Rebirth, without losing anything. OG players will obviously get a lot more out of them because they KNOW things that you do not (yet) and have super strong nostalgia, BUT they also get hit with NEW stuff and are in the same boat as you and go... "idk what's going on here" at some parts. So ENJOY!! IF you want to spoil yourself and learn more of the FF7 story, you can always play OG FF7 or watch a letsplay of it.
The new elements their adding I want to wait and see the complete picture before deciding how I feel about them. I'm sure they understand that by adding this new stuff in they were going to ruffle feathers. So hopefully the end goal they have in mind for these elements has been really thought out by this point. I'm very excited for Rebirth regardless of this though it all looks so good.
The coolest thing about this game is seeing your entire party, not just your three selected members, fighting together. It’s cool to see everyone dealing damage.
This game is so good, 13 hours in so far and I am surprised how much I am enjoyed all of it, everything from side quests, towns, character interactions, minigames (queens blood is amazing) and main scenario!! There was a lot of things I didn’t loved on remake (pacing, padding, side quests and story changes) and same with XVI (pacing issues, lack of variety, easy combat, mmoish world exploration and side quest design), but this one so far has been a massive improvement from remake (I still have a long way to go though) and I am loving the shit out of it.
Good review. That said, I have to be honest and lots of what I hear didn't appeal to me. Having massive amount of side content, not to mention a kind of open world, is not something I like to spend hours doing anymore. This is what I actually loved about remake (despite the padding of the story with filler), that everything was so streamlined and tight. I still bought rebirth because I want to play all three games, but I'll wait until I play it. I do hope part 3 goes back to remake style streamlining. Or maybe even something like FF16 which was streamlined but still with some open zones.
This is amazing as I’ve been watching night sky prince for a long time and I know he wasn’t a fan of remake and changing story but for him to now like it says how amazing game is. Very excited to get game tomorrow!!
As someone who hates modern ff you actually made me want to play it. Personally i always thought the gameplay was mediocre in remake so it's a pleasant surprise to see it improved, i refuse to believe it will be anywhere close to the best ff ever but good is already a huge milestone for this franchise these days
Some thoughts on the game so far: I have played about thirty hours, and just now got to Junon’s parade section. So far the game is pretty enjoyable, but there are been some things that have bumped me out. 1. Mini games. Yes, most are optional. But they feel severely like padding in the first game, and honestly worse for me vs the dungeons. They could have cut about half of the mini games and been fine. Why do we need to lure a chicken or sneak on bandits four different times? 2. Combat is clunky with the camera. It doesn’t respond well to sensitivity adjustments, nor does it handle the open world zones as well as it should. 3. Slowed down sections for traversal. Another example of padding. 4. Relationship system is interesting but feels bare bones and superficial. Maybe they could have invested in that instead of dolphin swimming? 5. Graphics. This game does not look like a ps5 title, even on resolution mode. The character designs are stunning, but the environmental textures and interactions are severely last Gen. Why don’t the clouds move? Why aren’t there better examples of footprints or battle destruction. With using similar assets, I would have expected better development here. Just thought it would be good to share my insights on what may not click with some people. I’ll still finish the game and likely love it, but I’m not as invested in it because of all the padding and pacing issues.
The of idea of iterating on Remake while also having to look at the original 7 as a framework is likely why Rebirth has from I can tell worked so well as a 'game'. Having these "restrictions" tremendously helps ground the game in a direction that facilitates the development focus on the real meat and potatoes. Instead of having to fiddle around with so many ideas and problems like 13, 15 even 16.
Saying you are a now a Cait Sith fan peaked my intrigue. I always thought Cait Sith was the least important and under developed members of the cast. So hyped to play this game!
I do wonder some things: Like are the summons from remake are here? Are the outfits a one time thing or maybe able to change them later? Did the fix the performance mode?

I would love to see the Rebirth treatment go to a remake of Final Fantasy VI. Part 1 being the World of Balance, and part 2 being the world of ruin. Leave the world and locations alone, but definitely put the character development of Rebirth into one of the greatest cast of characters they have ever done.
I really can't wait!! Got it being delivered 2morrow by amazon. They say the 1st remake chapter was linear well the original game was very linear until u left Midgar! I was 14 when it 1st came out and couldn't stop playing it, best game ever!! Completed it 100% back in the day now I get to do it again in my 40's 😁 amazing!
the great part about FFVII being a trilogy in 3 parts is that it gives developers opportunity to improve in the next game. Remake was very much a testing ground, players gave opinions, Square listened and improved for Rebirth. One great example is air combat. HEAVILY improved in Rebirth than Remake. This, in my opinion, is how a company should REMAKE games

FF7 remake will have 3 parts. By the time they are done the 3rd with all the improvements, they will have to release a remake of the original remake.

The third game will feature the party parachuting back into Midgar. The new assets they create for the return to Midgar could one day be inserted back into Remake some day.

I am not rushing the story, I have a feeling I'll be spending more on side content to get the most out of it.
If it's anything like witcher 3, the side content will throw me off the main story's immersion.

Love the idea of open world linear progression combo. Wish Zelda would go to this style of gameplay. BOTW and TOTK lost alot of what makes a Zelda game special by going all in on open air/world insanity. Dont get me wrong it was a nice change for a game or 2 and now they have the buolding blocks to do something better. I love the idea of an open world with linear dungeons and story progression. Nintendo could learn a thing or 2 here.
Yeah, everything I'm hearing about this game is reminding me of what I've been missing from the Zelda series since like...Twilight Princess on the Wii. It sounds like the bar for game of the year is about to be set sky high, and it's only February.
Meanwhile, I just finally got back into Elden Ring and am getting close to the end, I've barely touched Baldur's Gate, and now this and then Dragon's Dogma 2 next month...my gaming schedule is probably booked for the next year. 😆
Well, I loved the traditional Zelda games but BOTW and TOTK blew me away and were very special experiences. I’m not sure what Nintendo has to learn since they are two of the most successful games ever and certainly the most for the franchise.
BOTW picked up numerous game of the year awards on release. It was voted best game ever on a national TV channel awards in 2021, in Japan, and by over 200 international reviewers in 2021. You can disagree but the awards and huge sales speak for themselves.
Nintendo do not have much to learn from Square here or any other company for that matter as they continue to please most people again and again. Square have lost their way for some time and it’s good to see them back on form.
It’s also important to note that other reviews have criticized Rebirth for not getting the balance of open world and linear progression right. I’ve heard comments that the pace suffers a lot with some mini games being necessary, and the story suffers for it. There’s also bloating and padding though it seems to be better than remake.
Nintendo set out for a very specific open world experience with those games and achieved what they set out to. Some fans of other Zelda games were never going to be happy with an open world but I also remember them complaining that Zelda was too linear and getting stale.
Moving forward Nintendo will do something different with Zelda. The success will be determined by sales and official recognition. Some fans of previous games (including BOtW and ToTK)will be unhappy as we see with every FF game.

I would say it would be a flaw to have a cancelled type battle system. Final Fantasy has always been about strategy and using the right spell/technique, so I'm glad that still transfers over to this.

Since beating Rebirth I find myself in the complete opposite camp than the majority. I liked the game but just to see the story (which was soooo dragged out - It was hard to push myself until it picked up in chapter 11). The open world is just hours upon hours of padding which is fine if you’re someone who wants more towers / shrines / excavations (etc) but when you’ve done it once or twice it’s already enough (for me). Strictly from someone who just wanted story and not a mini game compilation, it def didn’t hit the mark. Was it bad? No.. but you could have combined remake into rebirth (minus alllll the padding from both) and that would have made a much better experience for “me.” This will be the first FF title I don’t go replay for extras and/or to platinum.
Facts. I completed grasslands and junon open world missions. I just finished the parade and I’m not looking forward to the next open world section. It’s too tedious.

I was bored out of my mind so I completely understand. Not hating on the game as I know a lot of people like the content but it’s not what I was hoping for. Once you are done the game and look back at everything that transpired it’s minuscule to the amount of hours put in. (The pacing feels terrible if you do a lot of SQ’s) story wise I didn’t mind what they did but there simply isn’t enough “substance” to make this 3 games like they are. Again, just my opinion but I am starting to see quite few more come out now.

I think the issue I have with treating this game as a blueprint for the future of the franchise is that it does require you to love or have nostaliga for FF7 to fully embrace it. I don’t really think I’d enjoy what sounds like a bog standard open world with a bunch of minigames and meandering character moments if it starred a brand new cast I don’t have an attachment to. I am not a particular fan of these characters (aside from Barret my beloved) or this world, so this is 100% a skip for me.
That said, I think there are things future FF games can pull from this - the combat system looks fun, and the party interactions are nice regardless of the cast. Embracing the camp and goofiness is also good for whatever a FF17 and beyond may be.

How are the items/weapons/armor. The thing I hated about FF16 is it was all the same, no cool things like Benji glove or Ribbon just different attack power.
FF16 is really an action game with cut scenes and side quests. It isn’t really much of an RPG like the other FF games. Even GOW has deeper RPG mechanics of meaningful upgrading weapons and status effects.
Rebirth does have cool items weapons and armour with the materia system- just like remake. You can also explore and find secrets and mini bosses as was mentioned in the review.
I mean just look at remake's equipment system and at least expect Rebirth to be nothing less than that😂.
I can't see how your issues with 16 will somehow be reflected in Rebirth. When Remake in itself and 16 is already that different to begin with

Yeah, I've been waiting for another boom in gaming. Like the PS3 and Xbox 360 era when all of these new innovative and awesome story-driven games were coming out left and right.
It's crazy just how much they kept in the game, from chocobo types to digging, i keep expecting there's gonna be missing content from the og, but so far, it's been overwhelmingly great. I do like how they've taken pieces from nearly every entry to make a masterpiece.

Interesting review. I'm eager to see how good this game is when it's faithful. And am hooked by the gameplay cycle.
Of all things you said here, there is one point I'm sure I'll agree strongly once I reach the end of the game:
The combat design being this good is a living testament to how important and favorable it is for Final Fantasy to stick to a design philosophy moving forward instead of frenetically changing everything to the core. Because in the end, if you dedicate to something you'll eventually become more likely to be the best at that thing, instead of being a trend-chaser that is a master of nothing and is left forgotten when the next big trend and FF title hits.
The vibe I’m getting from these reviews is that it’s a great game overall and the story is good *but* we will be back on the meme train like we were after Remake. I understand it has to be over the top / leave us dangling even harder but I really hope it’s not as convoluted / jarring as/ out of place as it was towards the end of Remake.
So excited for tomorrow's release I really hope they fix the blurry mess that is performance mode soon because I'm not playing this in 30 frames a second

I've been running graphics mode and haven't had any problems. Runs great. The only time I tend to run performance modes are with competitive online multiplayers, where every millisecond counts.
I’ve seen so many reviews where people are saying “everything is so good… mostly” or “the characters are handled so well… most of the time” without any context. It’s scaring me a little but I’m still hyped.
I think the game is beyond generous. The combat, the characters , musics and locations… but… unnecessary padding is still there, outdated trudgy mechanics are still there (L2 R2 crawling uuugh), and KH type narrative is definitely not for everyone
I hear you - but what makes me feel a bit better is that the game is sitting at a 93 on OpenCritic, a full 5 points higher than Remake which was amazing. It seems the downfalls of Rebirth are heavily overshadowed by all of the positives. The ONE thing that worries me is I've heard handful of reviewers say it fumbles the ending. But hey - the final installment can clean that up if its true

The great thing about this type of combat without the ability to cancel out of an ability into a block for example, is that it makes animation and ability commitment that much more important.
It's pretty clear to me that (in Remake) they basically designed the whole combat system on that risk/reward commitment style attack system.
Your main resource (ATB) builds quickly by attacking. But each character's basic attack chain deals the most damage and gains the most ATB from the very last hit hit in the combo. Which means you are rewarded heavily for picking your spots and finding the right opportunity to finish the whole attack chain without getting hit. Because if you get hit mid combo too much, now you need to spend that ATB to heal and yourself instead of dealing more damage.
If the game allowed you to cancel attacks into a block/dodge mid combo, then that risk/reward element of the combat system is completely lost and they would have to rebalance the whole thing.
I didn't think that I could actually get more excited for this game, but I am now! I've honestly been getting the sense that this is probably going to be the single best game in the series based on everything that I've heard and I SO hope that this game is raising the bar for future main line FF games and that it will be used as a tentative model moving forward.
I'm glad to hear your take on this game as I've been mostly worried about the story aspects. It excites me to hear what they've accomplished with this, and what that means for the future of the series. But I recall hearing from Hamaguchi that 90% of the Remake staff returned to work on this game, so there was already great working relationships, known/established SMEs, and a lot of continued collaboration from remake. They were able to take what they'd done and improve on it in every way. But w/ main FF titles changing teams and even CBUs across square, does FFXVII+ have a chance of matching Rebirth's quality/quantity? Remake was a great accomplishment with not insignificant flaws, but I guess i'm just worried that sequels will be the only games in the series now that reach this level.

The fact that you mentioned optional dungeons makes me extremely happy. It really did evolve from ff15 in that aspect, while also evolving from 7 remake’s combat. Literally took the the best things from both games and evolved them in one package. That’s insane!
15 had optional dungeons like Pitioss and doing hunts again in some dungeons
FF7 was the first game I ever bought by myself. I did have a SNES and NES before that, but FF7 and by extension the PSX was the first time I had saved my own money, took the game and console to the counter, and bought it myself without my parents. While not my favourite FF, it's the most special simply due to that fact.
Crazy to see this project reach the level of anticipation it is now. There's been remakes I've loved of classic games, Resident Evil 2/3, the Star Ocean Second Story remake, Trials of Mana, etc, but to see a game that marked my first real step into my biggest passion (gaming) receive this much effort put into remaking it, while looking like it's paid off, is incredible.
I just wish the shop I bought the original FF7 still existed, cause I would have loved to buy Rebirth from there.

I actually got really lucky and have already got the game a few days before release absolutely loving it
God I am so fuckin stoked for this game I absolutely cannot wait. Like I think its nuts that yeah there are still some naysayers out there, but like the quality has been so on point, so high, and just SO reminiscent of what old Square Soft used to be that the majority of peoples opinions is that they are so stoked to be alive in a time to play this experience and that maybe the company we loved and were so worried about might make a turnaround that we always knew they could.
Everything about this game so far has been exactly what I hoped for and I’m still in chapter 2!
The wait is harder and harder to bear... The only issue I have from playing the demo may or may not be toggleable in the full game: I can't switch to Cloud's bravery stance from guarding because of synergy shortcuts. I can live without it but it was a major way I played Cloud in Remake, I'd switch to a counter stance with a lot of leeway on the timing. I guess I'll now have to fall back to perfect guarding, I'll say goodbye to the counter attack unless they introduced some kind of counter mechanic on perfect parries which should be awesome, but I guess not since we can still turtle in bravery, we'll have to use it with anticipation and use perfect parry for last second reactions. The only real issue there is that it'll make switching between Remake and Rebirth require some time to switch between styles

People may hate this game and say “this is staining the og” but it isn’t, it is its own thing, it’s different, they use the foundation of ff7 og and build apon it. I think more people need to realize that change is a thing and sometimes you got to except it, i love the change. I except the change, i just love everything except they do have a little to much bloat. I dont mind the whispers after knowing there connected to a character, well some of them, but i love all of it and i think the way there going and its interesting and refreshing. Ill be looking forward to this new, different, version off ff7
The only two parts that I really wanted in this game was Barrett vs Dyne and the end of Cosmo Canyon. I'm so glad that it sounds like those moments have been enhanced.

It sounds amazing. I'm a complete newcomer to Final Fantasy and I got FF7 Remake because I thought a remake of FF7 would be a perfect starting point, only to be confused and lost by everything with the Whispers and where the game assumes the player already knows the plot of FF7. Does FF7 Rebirth also assume the player knows the plot of FF7, or is it more newcomer-friendly than FF7 Remake?
Keeping this vague and spoiler free... FF7 Remake IS a good starting point, it's the beginning of FF7 (basically disc 1 of the OG) - All the things you are confused about (whispers), are new to the remake, so even seasoned players who know the full FF7 story are/were confused. They also added TONS of new content that was never in OG and expand the characters greatly.
You are fine playing Remake then Rebirth, without losing anything. OG players will obviously get a lot more out of them because they KNOW things that you do not (yet) and have super strong nostalgia, BUT they also get hit with NEW stuff and are in the same boat as you and go... "idk what's going on here" at some parts. So ENJOY!!
IF you want to spoil yourself and learn more of the FF7 story, you can always play OG FF7 or watch a letsplay of it.
I look forward to playing it on PC.
The new elements their adding I want to wait and see the complete picture before deciding how I feel about them. I'm sure they understand that by adding this new stuff in they were going to ruffle feathers. So hopefully the end goal they have in mind for these elements has been really thought out by this point. I'm very excited for Rebirth regardless of this though it all looks so good.

The coolest thing about this game is seeing your entire party, not just your three selected members, fighting together. It’s cool to see everyone dealing damage.
I was playing the demo this morning, I HATED THAT CLOUD COULD NOT JUMP MAN!!! After all looks like a really good game to play.
This game is so good, 13 hours in so far and I am surprised how much I am enjoyed all of it, everything from side quests, towns, character interactions, minigames (queens blood is amazing) and main scenario!!
There was a lot of things I didn’t loved on remake (pacing, padding, side quests and story changes) and same with XVI (pacing issues, lack of variety, easy combat, mmoish world exploration and side quest design), but this one so far has been a massive improvement from remake (I still have a long way to go though) and I am loving the shit out of it.

Having massive amount of side content, not to mention a kind of open world, is not something I like to spend hours doing anymore.
This is what I actually loved about remake (despite the padding of the story with filler), that everything was so streamlined and tight.
I still bought rebirth because I want to play all three games, but I'll wait until I play it.
I do hope part 3 goes back to remake style streamlining. Or maybe even something like FF16 which was streamlined but still with some open zones.

As someone who hates modern ff you actually made me want to play it. Personally i always thought the gameplay was mediocre in remake so it's a pleasant surprise to see it improved, i refuse to believe it will be anywhere close to the best ff ever but good is already a huge milestone for this franchise these days
Some thoughts on the game so far:
I have played about thirty hours, and just now got to Junon’s parade section.
So far the game is pretty enjoyable, but there are been some things that have bumped me out.
1. Mini games. Yes, most are optional. But they feel severely like padding in the first game, and honestly worse for me vs the dungeons. They could have cut about half of the mini games and been fine. Why do we need to lure a chicken or sneak on bandits four different times?
2. Combat is clunky with the camera. It doesn’t respond well to sensitivity adjustments, nor does it handle the open world zones as well as it should.
3. Slowed down sections for traversal. Another example of padding.
4. Relationship system is interesting but feels bare bones and superficial. Maybe they could have invested in that instead of dolphin swimming?
5. Graphics. This game does not look like a ps5 title, even on resolution mode. The character designs are stunning, but the environmental textures and interactions are severely last Gen. Why don’t the clouds move? Why aren’t there better examples of footprints or battle destruction. With using similar assets, I would have expected better development here.
Just thought it would be good to share my insights on what may not click with some people. I’ll still finish the game and likely love it, but I’m not as invested in it because of all the padding and pacing issues.
The of idea of iterating on Remake while also having to look at the original 7 as a framework is likely why Rebirth has from I can tell worked so well as a 'game'.
Having these "restrictions" tremendously helps ground the game in a direction that facilitates the development focus on the real meat and potatoes.
Instead of having to fiddle around with so many ideas and problems like 13, 15 even 16.
Saying you are a now a Cait Sith fan peaked my intrigue. I always thought Cait Sith was the least important and under developed members of the cast. So hyped to play this game!
I do wonder some things:
Like are the summons from remake are here?
Are the outfits a one time thing or maybe able to change them later?
Did the fix the performance mode?
All Final Fantasy fans who have reviewed this yet have said it's fantastic and that's the reviews that matters the most! ❤️
rebirth ending feels like the developer can't decide whether they wanna stick to OG story or continue the remake unknown future.
Sitting here patiently waiting for the game. Though little jealous Hawaii can start playing it at 7pm EST. So cruel to release midnight (Im Eastern time) on a weekday. Us boomers gotta work the next day you know

I would love to see the Rebirth treatment go to a remake of Final Fantasy VI. Part 1 being the World of Balance, and part 2 being the world of ruin. Leave the world and locations alone, but definitely put the character development of Rebirth into one of the greatest cast of characters they have ever done.
I really can't wait!! Got it being delivered 2morrow by amazon. They say the 1st remake chapter was linear well the original game was very linear until u left Midgar! I was 14 when it 1st came out and couldn't stop playing it, best game ever!! Completed it 100% back in the day now I get to do it again in my 40's 😁 amazing!
the great part about FFVII being a trilogy in 3 parts is that it gives developers opportunity to improve in the next game.
Remake was very much a testing ground, players gave opinions, Square listened and improved for Rebirth.
One great example is air combat. HEAVILY improved in Rebirth than Remake. This, in my opinion, is how a company should REMAKE games
