  • The world's top-ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler, was arrested Friday morning while trying to enter the Valhalla Golf Club ahead of Friday's second round of the PGA Championship. He's facing multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer, but was released and has since returned to the course. Golf.com writer James Colgan joined CBS News to discuss the situation.

Imagine if you went to work on one of the most important days of the year where you have an opportunity to get a huge raise and a promotion. Then you hear there’s an accident in front of work, and the only way in is blocked to the public, but they will let employees through still. You have a strict deadline to be at a certain place at work at a precise time or you lose your opportunity to present your case for promotion and a raise. Then you get to your work (later now than planned because of the delay), but the police refuse to let you through because they don’t believe you actually work there.
Remember that your job is also world famous, and your face is currently on millions of dollars worth of advertising. It would take about ten seconds to search your name and see countless official pictures verifying your identity. Wouldn’t you be a little surprised and maybe not sure what to do and possibly even agitated at how absurd this has become?
Then, because you know you are supposed to be let through, you make a move to go through, which sets off a chain reaction of police restraint responses. You know their boss already told your boss you can go through so you tell them they’re making a mistake. Now everything is escalating, and you’re in handcuffs being charged with whatever they can think of to prove themselves.
And the crazy thing is Scottie isn’t even one of the “random” players the police had agreed to let through. He’s either the second or third biggest player they should be ready to wave through. Obviously Tiger is the most, then maybe Rory next. But Sheffler is the favorite to win, and he just won the Masters. His face is everywhere in promotions, and they should have had department wide briefings on this major sporting event happening in their city this week. I do think it’s possible he lost his temper or made some heat of the moment mistakes about what to say, maybe even tried to budge past or something, but if they don’t release body cam footage with clear evidence he definitely crossed a line, then we should assume it was low scale “police brutality” (i.e. aggressive officers treating citizens as criminals). At least he’s a regular looking white man and didn’t have to fear for his life. The fact they escorted him back immediately after booking seems to indicate a superior officer got involved in the end.
I don’t know what would wilder, if he deserved it or almost got DQed because of incompetence? It could be a mix of both. What a bizarre turn of events.

According to Louisville Metro Government’s Economic Development Agency, the PGA Championship Week is set to bring in $80 million for the city’s economy from Monday through Sunday. Fans of the sport are also flooding the city, with an estimated 200,000 visitors coming to Louisville throughout the week. I hope the locals enjoy the money because I doubt the PGA will be returning there any time soon, not to mention other organizations that might be considering holding their event in Louisville. The incident could have and should have been handled in a more appropriate way given the circumstances as expressed by Scottie Scheffler himself in his after game remarks.

The reporter just said the police agreed to let players registered to play in the tournament through, but they didn’t believe he was a player. That means the police were “wrong” and shouldn’t have stopped him.
I suspect the combination of typical city police heavy-handedness mixed with his urgency to not be late (which is an automatic DQ from this major championship) and disbelief that they are supposed to be letting him, one of the players, through led to this stupid situation.
