Primary colours/ Complementary colours...
Reds... 788-060, 080
Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
Blue... 788- 145

Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

You are very welcome!... thrilled that you are enjoying the videos... thanks for the kind words ... cheers! 🙏🙏
I have been into pastel painting for years. Unfortunately, I have not stayed with it although I have had commissioned portraits. I like what you are doing on media . It is a great thing to do by helping budding artists learn how to use the processes of the craft. I have become inspired lately to pick it up again. I am a bit rusty at it. I have increased my pastel pencil supplies. I also found that Clairfontaine Pastel matte to be a huge blessing as well. But I did start with a paper that filled the tooth with two to three layers. I have learned over the last year that I have overworked my earlier layers limiting my abilities to add important definition in the final stages. I am 59 years old and still learning. Thank you and all the other RUclipsrs etc. for inspiring me as well as others to venture on and don't quit what you have talent or desire to pursue talent in. I am hoping I can eventually be an inspiration for others as well. Thanks again.
Hi Terry good to hear from you. I love to share what I have uncovered over the years. Wishing you every sucess with your artwork... the surface I use is Pastel mat... it is magic to work on for sure. 👍🙏😊
Loved the video. The detailed process for skin tones was very helpful. I really liked seeing why and how you made the lip correction. Looking forward to next weeks part 2. Great to have detailed pencil and supply information in the show notes. Thank you Dave.
Hi Paula.... Thanks for the great feedback... glad you liked the extra details 😊🙏🙏

I usually draw using charcoal and graphite, and never had the nerve to try pastels, but I've just placed an order to purchase soft pastel pencils and chalk sticks right after this! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and work! :-)
Hi Hend ... thanks great to know... pastels are an amazing medium to understand colour. Enjoy! ☺
You are welcome... thank you so much for watching my videos. ☺🙏

Bellissima lezione grazie 😊
sei il benvenuto, grazie per il feedback :-)
Thank you Dave. I think the more I watch, the more I will get the hang of it. I’m still struggling with color. Lots to learn. I tried out using the blue and orange in the eyes and love it! I found it most helpful when you said that you put the white first in the light areas, and the color first in the shadow. I’m wondering if you could do a small section, or a nose, in real time so I can break down the color choices and when you use them.
Hi Jeni... thank you so much for taking the time to give feedback... Thrilled that the blue and orange is working for you... I have a video in my channel on how to draw a nose in pastels with loads of realtime and slowed down footage... so best to check that out. I will be launching Patreon soon which on tier two I will be offering realtime video and audio... so taking you through every step as I layer the colours. Still having issues with Patreon regarding my old tech ... but working to find the solutions. 😊🙏
You make great artwork👏I love your techniek😍 and want try this at home.
Thank you! Thats great Wilma... it will become so natural with practice... 😊🙏
@@DavePortersArt if iT was possible i have send you the photo of My work that you could see how beautiful the art work is coming with Your technicks☺️
@@wilmatiemessen994 Hi Wilma... that sound great.... you can email me if you like on daveportersart@gmail.com :-)
thanks, David for this video. hopefully, you talk about the measurement of how you do it, especially the photo is smaller than the painting
I have a lot of video show how to draw the outline freehand... cheers
I am French and I work with Carbothello pencils
Hi Annie, they are a superb brand, great to work with. However, I would suggest substituting some of the blues, Reds and purples colours for an other brand as the lightfastness are poor. That is the reason why I use Conté à Paris for those colours. All the very best 🙏
thank you~!!
You are welcome! :-)
How long did the amazing portrait take?
So far about 7 hours... cheers 🙏
Dave sei fantastico! Dove posso trovare i materiali che hai usato? Grazie
Grazie Anna per le tue gentili parole, io uso Amazon, Jacksons art supplies, Great Art London. Se dai un'occhiata alla descrizione sotto questo video, ho un link amazon, non sono sicuro se spedirebbero in Italia. Benedizioni 💕🙏
hi dave another great piece, one question i notice the reference picture is smaller than the artwork,so how do you scale with your pencil if one is a different to the other regards spencer
Hi Spencer... I work from the centre so it's all relative... best to check out the video explaining in detail 'How to draw the outline freehand' pastel of Olivia in my channel... I explain it there. 🙏🙏
@@DavePortersArt many thanks Dave will check that out
Dont know how you let go of everything with a portrait I can occasionally do that with other projects but if try during a portrait I end up with a mess lol 😝
I find I need to concentrate more or I can lose the right shapes never mind remember the colours to use, maybe if I ever get the colour sequence ingrained into my brain I might be able to do that.
If you think of it like driving a car... when at first when we are learning everything is super focused and conscious... then after a while we just jump in the car and drive without thinking about it... it becomes instinctive. It is weird as if I think about doing art I can't even draw correctly. I am finding it a challenge to do realtime video with realtime audio. As to talk while I work feels alien and strange. It's a learning curve.
@@DavePortersArt yes I know what you mean with driving, think I get too anxious about my art so it stops that feeling a bit, need to learn how to relax into it.
Hi Dave can I get more tuition from you on Patreon or any similar teaching platform. Thanks Joan
Hi Joan... yes I do have loads of step by step real-time audio real time video on my patron site... all the details are in the description under this video. All the best 😊🙏
What do you mean by 'rich colours'?
Colours with high pigment that are vibrant 🙏
@@DavePortersArt thank you!
Thats a really great portrait and I love to watch you paint. But I have one question, you often paint celebs and movie characters, are you not worried of legal issues? I mean don't you have to have the rights on a photograph to show it?
I see that in a lot of Fan-Art as well and I know of some artists that got into real trouble because of painting/showing their paintings to the public.
