I'm so glad I found your channel, the way you explain and give advice to your process just resonates with how I feel when I'm working on a portrait because it gets too personal, and its as if the drawing is trying to communicate as you go along, I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who feels that way, thank you for the encouragement.
Thank you so much for the comment Joanna, tbh I can't draw or paint a thing without opening my heart. All the very best with your art journey 🙏😊

Amazing work Dave!! This historic tv adaptation of Jesus is by far my favourite version, with Robert Powell's powerful performance, it's truly a magnificent and a very moving telling of this religious story. Pastel although I have very limited experience of this much loved medium, I have to say that your video has inspired me to learn how to draw eyes and faces in pastel and then to use the medium when drawing people. Your video has been an eye opener Dave, and I thankyou so much for the inspiration and hopefully it will help me to grow as an artist, be as an amateur. Watching your video made me think how great would it have been if you had the soundtrack of Jesus Of Nazerath playing in the background, which is just as iconic as the TV series, beautiful and haunting in equal measures, but copyright is a subject matter most of us stay clear of. Brilliant video Dave, you've gained another subscriber, always a pleasure to help a fellow Brit!!
Hi Huggy Bear, thank you so much! really appreciate the time you have taken to leave such wonderful feedback... much appreciated. I love this TV adaptation; I was mesmerized as a child watching it and still the same at 60. It would have been a treat to add the soundtrack of Jesus of Nazareth, but as you mentioned, copyright is always an issue to be aware of. I wish you all the very best with your pastel journey, thanks for subscribing to my channel means a lot to me. 😊🙏
@Dave Porters Art Thankyou Dave for taking the time to reply back. Yes I wouldn't say I was a very religious person even though I love to draw Angels but I remember watching this TV series at School during RE lessons and it used to get shown at Easter holiday aswell. I'm currently working on a drawing of the Archangel Michael, there's a lot of detail involved but I hope to get it done soon. I'm hoping to use your videos on drawing faces in pastels as a guide so I can draw realistic looking eyes, I want to give him piercing blue eyes so I need to get practising. Thankyou once again Dave, and any compliments that come your way are truly well deserved. Art just like a piece of music or a film, they can move you emotionally and bring a smile to one's face, art is universal too and artists are a gift, creating something from nothing, it's nothing short of magic. I shall look forward to your next and future videos. All the best buddy!! 👍
Oh my God, this is so beautiful, God bless your hands and talent. Have a wonderful Christmas💓💜🙏

Beautiful work!
Edit: was a longer comment but should have read the description! Doh!
😊👍 thank you so nuch 🙏🙏
@@DavePortersArt The way you've captured those piercing eyes is really stunning! I used to draw extensively, just for myself. Between work and doing my nurse training it's fell by the wayside. I've bought Andrew Loomis' books to encourage me back to drawing and they've been a huge inspiration. I'll be having a thorough dive through your videos for colour work tips (always been my weakest point of art work).
Edit: a like and sub from me!
@@jodders619 The eyes is one of the reasons I created the drawing... love Robert Powell on this movie. Thank you so much for taking a look at my videos... all the very best with inspiring yourself to start art again.🙏🙏

The best!! can you share the model image? or the initial drawing? thanks for the support. Greetings from Ecuador
Cheers, thanks for watching... sorry I can't help you with your request. You should find the image if you google Jesus of Nazareth 🙏
I love your masterpieces. What colour pastels do you recommand to someone who wants to begin portrait with black skin tones (dark tones)? Thank you.
Thank you so much for your kind words... I have several videos on how to mix dark skin tones in my channel... here is one of them... ruclips.net/video/CCpklkfStSw/видео.html
Take care and be well.
Hi Dave , I really enjoy your videos. Do you know of a fixative that works well with soft pastel paintings? The ones I’ve tried leave spots.
Hi Cyndy, I tend not to use fixative as it dulls colour. I work on Pastelmat which grips the pigment so not much dust is created. I wrap my work in glassine or frame it under glass and mount. Thanks for watching my videos. 😊🙏
Beautiful portrait, do you use caran D'ache luminance as well thanks
Hi Ann... I haven't used coloured pencils before... just focused on pastels as they suits my loose style of painting. I have seen some awesome work from artist that do use them. 😊🙏
🙏🏾🙌🏿😌😍
☺🙏🙏
Beautiful art👍i love Your technicks. Have this technicks a name? Or did find out iT by Your self.ore where do you learn this from?
Hi Wilma... thanks... the technique is something that developed over the years. I prefer to work on the whole with layers now it feels more intuitive and creates more freedom. It developed without though. It is just how I create now. 😊🙏
This wonderful do you have a link to the reference photo please ?
Hi... this will be on my Patreon page in September where I will give a link to the defence there. 😊🙏
Cool i Will draw this picture but where can i find the reference foto.
I wish you a good happy and Healthy 2021
What I do is take a screen shot from the film footage on RUclips then adjust in Photoshop. Then you can find just the right expression you desire to work from. 🙏🙏
Dear Mr Porters, do you think this portrait would be possible on a pastelmat dark or light blue? Many thanks for your reply 🙏🏻
Hi Angela... Yes, absolutely because it would make subtle greens when applying the yellow ochre on the top. What I would do is try to mix the skin tone on a small scrap piece if you have some cut offs.... and see how it turns out. Take care Dave 🙏
Hi Dave, do you mix soft pastels with oil pastels?
Hi Alina, I've never tried that tbh, I would imagine they would not mix as One is Oil based and the other dry pigment. If you search here on RUclips you might find a better answer. 😊
Can I make this with my Carbothello pencils and pastel chalks?
Hi Annie... yes, they are a superb brand, great to work with. However, I would suggest substituting some of the blues, Reds and purples colours for an other brand as the lightfastness are poor. That is the reason why I use Conté à Paris for those colours. All the very best 🙏
I would like to draw Robert Powell. Your drawing is magnificent
Which brand of pencils do you use? And which kind of paper?
It's all the description 🙏
what about the verdaccio technique?
By that you mean doing an underdrawing in green. I don't fix inbetween layers so I tend to do the underdrawing in primary colours and they seem to mix cleaner when adding the rich coloured layer. The verďaccio technique can make a painting too greenish in my humble opinion. 🙏
Can you erase mistakes? HOw do you do the highlights in the eyes?
Hi Jennifer... I have shown how to change mistakes and highlights with eyes in the video Glasses, Eyes and skin tones... so be sure to check this out in ny channel. 😊🙏
is it soft pastels you use or oil pastel
Hi Kanika... they are soft pastels... I will be posting some oil pastels with coloured pencils combo at some point. 🙏🙏
I am curious, I see that at times you are resting your drawing hand directly on the portrait...doesn't that smudge for you? I have to use a sheet of paper or other material to rest my hand on because smudging is a big issue for me. Tips on this?
Hi Rick... I was only leaning on the underdrawing in this video... I use Glassine paper or a Bob stick over the following coat.
@@DavePortersArt Thanks for the info
How are you avoiding the smudge that comes from the pastel?
It is the magic of using a sanded surface like Pastelmatt 🙏
@@DavePortersArt nice!
Are these colored pencils or pastels?
They are pastel pencils 😊🙏
@@DavePortersArt Thank you, I've never seen such a thing!! Beautiful work!!
@@KatherineLWince thank you Katherine 🙏
Jesus had brown eyes... ; )
Blue eyed white Jesus...lol
No one has seen the lord tha god but the father.
I can't get over that this "Jesus" has blue eyes and caucasian face features, knowing what part of the world he came from. Jesus was not white, he was a brown-skinned, Middle Eastern Jew, and a far cry from the looks of Robert Powell. However, you're doing a great job copying the photo, which was the goal in the tutorial. But, this can not pass as a would-be portrait of Jesus, this is a portrait of Mr Powell.
