You are the reason why I bought my 2017 Tesla model S I love it
Wow! Glad you love your car!!! 😀
I really enjoy your videos
Thank You!!!
I’m glad I never sold it, who cares about price. This is a beauty
It is a beautiful car!
Not sure if you remember but I asked your advice on buying a 2017 model S about 6 months ago, great advice I love this car and can’t imagine going back to a regular car anytime soon.
Wow! That's awesome, I'm so happy you love your car! 😃
Hey I just bought this same car with 17k miles.... brand new almost.... FSD included and Arachnid Wheels. What an exceptional car. Way less to go wrong. 2nd motor, suspension, sunroof, all failure points
Niiiiice! That's amazing! Hope you love it!
I bought a 2016 Model S 75D 15 months ago at 68k miles. It has now covered 93k and has been a truly amazing vehicle. It has had a couple of well known issues. The handbrake solenoids have both been replaced, the windscreen wiper assembly has also been replaced. Other than that nothing but normal maintenance you would expect, wiper blades, polllen filter etc. Fantastic car cannot imagine selling anytime soon. Will fillow your channel with interest thanks.
Great to hear you've had a positive experience too! 😀
I dont think that’s normal in only 15 months. How much did it cost total? (Im considering buying a Model S, currently driving a Volkswagen)
As someone who has researched and read a lot in the past few years about the Model S I really like this channel!
Really like your detailed and calm way of presenting.
Test-drove a M3 LR '19 and a MY LR '22, for a couple hundreds of miles each, but am still wanting the S more.
Still not decided though if I should go for a 2017-2019 pre-Raven or a Raven 2019-end of 2020 LR.
Thank You! I can see why the Raven upgrades would be tempting! Will it be your first Tesla? I'm sure you'll love whatever you end up with!
@@FrugalNotCheap Thank you, I am sure since I usually take a long time to research and by my next product haha. And in the mean time the new model has come out of course. :D
Planning to by it from Tesla probably as I live in Europe, not sure if this would be the best or safest way, but we'll see.
Still have some questions about some options and upgrades of the MS and I'll be looking to ask some current owners about it.
Cheers.
Cheers! Good luck in your search!
i bought my model s for the exact same reasons as you and relate a lot to what you said. I enjoyed this video a lot, thank you.
Awesome! Thank you! Hope you're loving the car 😀
comfort mode is so smooth so light so easy to drive i feel so blessed every day. i love my car so so so so much thank you God!
👍
Nice video! Can’t believe it’s already 3 years since you got the car. I still remember your first video. And I’m in DFW area as well that currently driving a 23 MYP, but thinking to replace my Volt with a used Model S. I found an early 2017 car that still has free unlimited supercharging, that I’m thinking to get. But wondering how it performs at supercharging since the battery is almost 8 years old. My MYP is able to achieve 200+ kw charging and I’m quite happy with the charging time but don’t know if the charging time will get a big hit for old model S. Thanks!
I can't believe it either! It'll be 4 years in March!
Very cool on the 23 MYP! You won't get 200+ kw charging on the Model S, I think the peak I've seen is 150kw and it doesn't stay at the high rates for very long, more like low 100's and then 80-90's, so it won't be as good for road trips - but I've never found it to be that big of a deal. I do think it would be nice if I'd gotten a 100D though, so that the battery would be bigger and I could go further without hitting the SC :) But it's ok, I love my car!
@ thank you for the information! Yeah that’s the reason I’m considering 100D as well. We will see!
I might be wrong, but I think Teslas have laminated glass all around. You should double check for your model. If that's so, you will need a saw to cut it and something to punch through to get the initial cut going. It will not shatter like tempered glass, and your glass breaker will not work. This is an issue if your car catches on fire too btw.
Valuable info! Will need to open the door or roll down the window quickly in water, then!
Great walk thru 😎 I have 75D same colour. May I ask how long do you think you will keep your S?
Nice! It's a great color 🙂 It depends, if I were to stay in the US, then I would keep it until 2027 or so. But if I move abroad, I'll be selling it
@@FrugalNotCheap Thanks. I'm planning to keep mine until at least 2027 too! Low maintenance costs and not too much depreciation now.
Can you do a video on the biggest problems with the 2017 model S?
I don't like making negative content, so I'd want to balance it somehow - like 5 things I love and 5 things I don't - thanks for the suggestion! 😀
What’s the range ? And how bad did it decrease?
224mi from 249mi so right at 10% after over 7 years :)
@ wow!!
In the market for a 2021 S
Great review thanks!
if you are into range than get the Model S Long Range. i think you get about 400 miles. probably a little bit less because you know, its a Tesla.
@Tewthpaste well said lol
I have three more years worth of payments on my 2023 Model 3 RWD. I am asking myself if I want to get another Model 3 or move up to the S (new or used). You gave us unrefutabel proof that new or used a Tesla or any electric car will have a long lifespan with few major repairs. I am impressed that Tesla would have put such high tech in a car made back in 2017.
It's pretty incredible! Especially how they keep getting better! Also, I love not having a car payment 😄

😄
Do you miss not having door pockets? or other storage options.
Not really! But I'm kind of minimalist and no kids!
i recently bought a Tesla Model S 75D its a awesome car. unfortunately i don't have the hardware 3 but 2.5 computer. do you think its worth it to upgrade? Also what really bugs me in the software at 16:00 at your video you bring up the backup camera, the corners are not finished good i can never unsee that anymore.
Nice! Glad you find it an awesome car, too!!
I think the AP upgrade is only worth it depending on your view on FSD, and your budget. I love FSD and I don't regret spending $5k to upgrade from Navigate on Autopilot
If you mean MCU1 to MCU2, that one is a clearer yes it's worth it, IMO
no I mean like at 16:00 you open the backup camera app and around the camera screen there is a white border and that's not correctly made up, first time I saw it on someone else it mcu I thought I had a bad software. I can't unsee it unfortunately.
Oh no! I'm going to try not to notice that 😆
How recent was yours? I am planning to pick one up today and would like to know if the 75 is good or if I should go for the 100d.
@@JorgeInRealLife mine is from 28dec 2018. I think the d is better because the rear motor of the single motor is prone to leak. But both are still great!
I was finally hoping for an update on the car. I recently got a 2017 model s 75d with 61k miles about 3 months ago and I love it so far it’s at 67k miles now and still no problems yet hopefully 🙏. I was also wondering for the center console did the car come equipped with a charger or was that installed? Mine has nothing in the center console so I was thinking that I might have to install one.
Glad you're loving your car! The previous owner had bought the charger for the console, it's handy! It's from Tesla. There are other kinds out there, but they take up more room
If you had index marks in the video for Pros and Cons, or Likes and Dislikes, that would be helpful. Thanks!
Good suggestion! I'll maybe do stuff like that when I FIRE and have more time
Hi. I hope you’re well. I pulled the trigger on a 2016.5 MS P90D refresh and absolutely love it. I’m glad I watched some of your videos. M3 was too small for my family with a car seat in the back.
In regards to replacing the cabin air filters, which ones do you buy and where do you find them. I don’t see an option to buy a filter for our generation MS. I only see MS 2021+.
Have you tried or do you recommend any air filters from Amazon?
Hi! Very cool!! 😀
I couldn't find anything good on Amazon either, so I bought my cabin air filter from the Tesla Service Center, their parts costs aren't terrible.
@@FrugalNotCheap Thanks so much. Do you normally just show up and ask for the part? I think I saw in one of your videos that they sold you the wrong filter one time. Do you recall which part number it was?
Yes, I just show up :) That's right, they sold me the one for the refresh cars and I had to go back :( the one for our cars is much skinnier. I'm sorry, I don't know the part number
@@FrugalNotCheap thanks so much! Hopefully they give me the right one the first time. Will let you know how it goes. 😉
Good luck 😆🤞 I bet it'll go well 🙂
Is there a way for the 2016 2017 tesla model s to get the blind spot camera view when u signal appear on the center screen?
There isn't :( I think it would be best if they put it in the instrument cluster, and there's no reason they can't do that but Tesla hasn't done it
Thank you.
My pleasure! 😀
What do you charge yours to on a daily basis? Thanks
I have a garage with a 120v volt outlet, which is enough since I work from home :)
Tesla should buld or buy a small LIDAR system for FDS a small popup LIDAR would work over the hood. Cameras will never work as well as LIDAR.
😆
You'll see
Fixing a minor issue in these old Model S variants costs arm and leg
Yes, these are luxury, small-volume vehicles so need to be prepared if something goes wrong. The repairs I've had (some suspension components) were not too bad. Small things like lug nut covers, air filter, trim clips, even one of the actuated intake vents, I have done myself.
Should I buy one with 70K miles? It's a 2017 Tesla model S 75d. Scared about the battery and the drive unit. Would it crap out soon? I do live in Tx . . .
There's no guarantee, so even though the stats are really good on battery longevity, you could be unlucky and I would be prepared for that if it were me. The warranty is really good though, at least mine is good for unlimited miles through October 2025. If it were me, I might have Tesla check on the battery health and all before the warranty expires. Amazing car though, hope you love yours if you get one!
Thank you sir for the feedback! 🙌🏽
I'm basically buying the exact same car thos week. 2017 75d . You said drive motor was replaced? Test driving mine it seemed pretty loud. Can you elaborate on your drive motor getting replaced
Very cool! The dual motor variant is great, too!
Since mine is RWD, you could really hear it coming from the back. It would be extra loud at highway speeds, so about 70-75 I think, and it was a particular sound, which has been described as a "milling" sound online. I think one of my old videos has it, I'll try to find it and will comment if I can 🙂
Found it! Skip to 42:00

@@FrugalNotCheap this one is more of a growl from like 30 to 40. What was the process of getting it replaced
The Service Center checked it out to replicate, and they had it for a day or two to replace I think. I also had the MCU upgraded at that time :)
@@FrugalNotCheap nice
In market for a 2018 one. :) ty for the vid. And username checks out.
Good luck with your search! Hope you find a great one 😀 Thank You!
Do you worry about battery health warranty? Will the battery die at year 9? Have you do any research about battery health for model S? Thanks
I don't really worry :) But I will most likely sell it next year while the warranty is still in effect. It's only 85k miles and the data shows you still have 80% capacity at like 200k miles. Many 2012, 2013 cars still going strong. There is a battery health test they can do
Did you have issues with the driver or passenger door panel clips?
I think I replaced clips on 3 doors! Got them cheap on Amazon and they've held up well ever since
With my luck the battery would crap out after the warranty expires. That’s my only reservation about getting an older one
It is a scary proposition. It would be nice to see the statistics, but even then there is a chance of a costly issue
We are looking at the same year. I heard there were a lot of recalls on this vehicle? Did you have to deal with any of that?
There was 1 for the hood latch. All the other "recalls" are just software updates 😄
Cool, man. Glad you still have it. Thanks for the videos. I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2017 S 75D myself in the next day or two. The prices are so crazy low right now, and I would get an additional $4000 off from the used EV tax credit! Anyway, your videos have been helpful in the decision!😃👋🏼
That's awesome!!! Very cool if you can get the tax credit! Hope you love it!
Hey James, you wouldn’t happen to live in the DMV region?
Well, I don’t know where that is, so I’m guessing I don’t live there😁
Did the same with the 4k. 2018 75d. Under 40k miles. It’s the best car I’ve ever had I love it. It does make some rattles (two horrible but fixed) and I have service appointment (mobile) coming up to fix the busted driver side door pins
Gotcha! It's not hard to do once you've done it a few times, but I don't blame you for saving the trouble lol
Glad you love your car!
Curious what the opinions are of people here, I'm potentially interested in a used Tesla, in my area I'm seeing several 2016-2017 Model Ss and 2021-2022 Model 3s being close in price. Which is considered the better buy today, or does it mostly come to preference?
I'm sure others will chime in, but to me there are a few major considerations
1. Model S repairs will be more expensive, it's a small-volume, more premium vehicle
2. Model S pre-2021 have a landscape screen, and currently do not get vision autopark, actually smart summon, sentry mode previews in app, and a number of other features that you could get on a Model 3 of the same year.
3. In general, hardware in the Model 3 is newer, more efficient
4. Model S is a hatchback, can fit a huge amount of stuff
5. Subjective: Model S looks better
Same thanks for answering this question
Got a deposit down on a 2016 75D just concerned about drive unit coolant leaks. Any advice?
Very cool! About having the drive unit checked out for coolant, or in general? Exciting either way!
The dual motor versions don't have drive unit liquid coolant so thats not a worry
I’m thinking of getting a 2016 Tesla Model S 75 with only 44k miles would u recommend?
Do you care about FSD? Oct 2016 is when they started making FSD-eligible vehicles if I remember right. I would also check the autopilot version, is it AP1?
The other thing I like to mention is that depreciation has made these look affordable but you need to be prepared for any repairs
@@FrugalNotCheap Not sure it says liftback midyear release, I really like the look and interior of the model s but the only thing is reliability idk how reliable they are, the other car I was looking at was the 2021 tesla model 3 don’t really like the look of it including the interior compared to model s but heard it has more features and more reliable so I’m stuck here
Midyear 2016 is probably AP1, so if you care about driver assistance features I would get a newer one
From a financial standpoint, the Model 3 is a no brainer and it also has a landscape screen and exterior speaker so you can get all the new features
The way I looked at it - is the look and feel of the Model S worth having older tech, less upgradability, and higher cost? But that was for a 2017 that can get FSD and the MCU2 upgrade. I specifically excluded pre-Octobwr 2016 vehicles
@@FrugalNotCheap From your personal experience having the car and hearing around at others experiences is the Model S reliable or no
Very reliable for me, there's just less to go wrong than in an ICE car, but at 7/8 years old, I think you want to be prepared for wear and tear to require some repairs and these will be more expensive for a small volume luxury car like an S than a high volume premium car like the 3. I've had some suspension components replaced, that's really it outside of a reman drive unit when I first got the vehicle l, had that done under warranty
was that charger in the front console an option? i just have a flat spot
Shoot! It must have been, I bought the car used and the previous owner had it in the original box, with different size pieces to hold skinnier or wider phones
@@FrugalNotCheap very hard to find part now. enjoy it
Really? That's too bad. Thank you!
I'm curious if any Lexus owners have made the move to a Model S? I find the "squeaks and rattles" factor to be quite off -putting. How serious is it?
Mine has 2 rattles that can be annoying if you don't have music on, or aren't talking to someone. More of an issue because roads are very bad here. Not a big deal on smooth asphalt, I don't hear anything then
I think newer cars are much better in this regard, my friend's Y is very solid and quiet
@@FrugalNotCheap I often have music on and the roads here are crap (high rainfall... constant battle with potholes). I heard others complain that loud music aggravates some rattles. Curious if they're fixable typically or buried and impossible?
I think that's case by case. I've fixed some muself but there is one in the back that I can't pinpoint withouy having someone else drive and going back there. I keep meaning to but it's not ruddy big of a deal
Anyone know how or if its possible to retro fit an older 2018 Model S with CSS ? I looked on Teslas website but didn't see anything
CSS?
@@FrugalNotCheap CCS*
Oh! The charger! Well many makes are adopting Tesla NACS charger. I'm not aware of any retrofit though. I did see a joke post of a NACS -->CCS-->NACS adapter setup though 😆
What mcu does it have
MCU2 🙂
Does your car have free supercharging? I want one ☝️
Free premium connectivity, but no free supercharging. Amazing car!
I purchased a late 2016 with free supercharging, premium connectivity and lifetime paid Enhanced Autopilot (now in beta autosteer) on 8/30/24 as of 9/14/24 the app says I've saved over $300 in SC fees (in SD they are .52/kw and it has a 100kw battery) Lovin' it!!!
Did you update your MCU unit to a new one because I do not have what you have and my 2017 please advise me thank you
Yes! I got the MCU2 upgrade and I think it was well worth it, albeit expensive. I didn't keep the radio 😆
You sound like a used car salesman (voice high/low fluctuation) which can like you sound a little phony. Also, work on not smacking your lips..... Other that 👍
🫠
This car is hideous should have gotten a model Y or model 3.
🤣
Holy cow brother, you have to be kidding! The S stands for Sexxxxy!😁
Agreed!
Photo of your face. Ill be the judge of ugly 😂
Is this a joke
