I had a feeling this video would be a small trigger for me. (YAY! Awareness! The background was very soothing which helped.) At 18, I learned I could not have a store credit card. Didnt know why at the time but it scared me enough not own a credit card again. (Wasnt diagnosed until my 30's.) While listening to you, I transferred money to my savings account. This week, I am returning items I bought while spiraling. (Mania or otherwise.) When Im spiraling, I have no clue whats going on. I ride the wave til it is over. People dont understand what it is like living with bipolar. (I live with bipolar 1.) Some people dont want to understand. Thank you, Rob, for your videos. They help.
Rob every time I see your channel and smiling face I am filled with hope !!! Our life is so broken and sometimes hopeless, but your experience and advice is cherished here ❤
Thank you so much for this video! I've racked up my credit cards many times through both manic and depressive moments to where I as well no longer have one other than a self pre-loaded card that seems to help me stop me spending so much. Thanks for bringing up a sensitive topic in a logical and respectful way.
I take 2 meds for bipolar and chronic depression. My credit card spending is not healthy. I NEED a therapy of some kind, but my Dr is med management only. Ugh.
Perhaps try to combine psychotherapy both with meds. That can be well invested money instead of maxing credit cards on stuff you don't even need. @@kimberlyturner5886
for this reason I feel like disorders that include impulsivity should be covered under the ADA for some sort of automatic ad block status. it should be a feature set up on all sites and if you qualify, you can opt yourself out of ALL or specific (targeted) advertising if desired. I know some people dont mind some advertising but for those of us who feel harmed by it, we should be allowed to opt out of all.
I always remind my family that if they say I need to go to the hospital I will go. I know I’m not capable of seeing the whole picture when I’m ill. I trust them
I definitely spend much more when I'm symptomatic. It's never a huge amount, but more like a bunch of smaller purchases-- mainly books or sweatshirts or stuff like that.
Rob. I remember when I wasn’t okay. Your videos help guide the blind. Thank you. We love you ❤ I wake up happy everyday now. Meds are 100% on point (hoping it stays like that)
Yes I know the ups and downs of Bipolar. I am currently on a LOA ( unpaid) I can barely make the bills by withdrawing from my retirement. I have filed for SSD. I believe I suffered from overspending more when I am depressed than hypo. I can’t get out of bed but I can mindlessly scroll for hours. Thanks for the information and thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you for sharing this information I seem to be much better with my meds and my therapy I’m a recovering alcoholic and I realize that I was masking my symptoms but I have been sober for 30 years now
Awesome video, you finish with the most important thing. Credit cards are really bad. I gave up credit cards 30 years ago. With not being able to keep a job and the random spending i never had anything. Now I own my property and everything I have and all I use is cash. I find it's the best way and sleep. There's nothing like staying awake for days and hitting the shops when they open .
I’ve been diagnosed with BP2 and it’s really something I have to get used to. Glad I was able to find a channel that has the same mental health issues I do ❤
Thank you so much for all you do Rob! I’m stable rn but this has been a major theme the past year! I really find what you had to say as helpful. Proper card management is huge!
I remember when I spent 10k in three months when I was hypomanic and untreated! Now I spend like 100 bucks at most. Thank the heavens for medication. Still building up my savings, but it's worth it in the end. Thank you for all your helpful advice, much appreciated.
I really liked the actionable suggestions you provided. Often you don't realize an option exists--like asking the bank to put a daily limit on debit card spending--until you hear about it from someone else. Also, the idea of tracking spending like tracking moods gave me the idea (I'm sure it's not original, but sharing in case anyone else hasn't jumped to it yet) that you should centralize all of these items being tracked. I.E.: Have a big desk or wall calendar which is dedicated to tracking: (1) Daily Mood, (2) Others' Interpretation of our Mood (3) Hours (actually) Slept (maybe tracked via an app?), (4) Hours out of Bed (or active hours, or something like that) (4) Spending that Day (amount and one-word description) I think this kind of approach could help identify trends toward both mania and depression (and help provide some reassurance to family/partners/roommates). This is just a shoot-from-the-hip idea. I'm sure it can be refined/better implemented.
Thanks for this video Rob! Lots of good tips. I had spending issues with credit cards. I made a decision to work on paying my debts off. It is not easy but I've made progress.
I am so grateful Rob for this video as this is my most challenging issue. I have Bi Polar 1 and spending gives me the comfort/thrill that nothing else does. I don’t have any credit cards but use my debit card and get myself in trouble. I am going to rewatch this video over and over. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I’ve never framed my spending as “self medicating”, it’s so obvious, but I never looked at my spending in those terms. Thank you again for the perfectly crafted video.
My psych was able diagnose me with mood disorder after a shopping spree. My room is about 15 sqm and I was able to fill half of the room with almost 100 packages. I also told my psych how my sister and brother and law has been criticizing me for my purchase but they don't even ask what they were. I reasoned all I bought was 'needs' and that I used my own money. Afterwards, my doctor also asked about the amount of money I spent. I did not know it was a symptom. But after being diagnosed with bipolar 2, all the symptoms I had since I was a teenager all made sense.
Really needed this video I notice when I’m manic I spend a lot more . A tip I’ve found is to make a google doc on spending vs saving .Love your videos Rob 💚keep up the good work.

I have so many shoes. I do pay off my credit card but I definitely buy things when stressed. The whole retail therapy. It’s easier said than done to fix the mindset. Thank you for your tips. The saved credit cards definitely made it too easy to buy online.
Also be careful because when you give your spouse control over the money and reach out for help. Eventually they may take complete control over your entire financial situation as well as become mentally abusive and extremely controlling to the point where you have absolutely nothing control over anything financially in your marriage or life. I have to prevent temptations by not going shopping except groceries, toss all flyers before reading them and un-subscribe from all email advertisement. I do my best to remove all temptation before it gets into the house . My weakness is still the dollar store so at least I get a ‘rush’ for $20 or less . I’ve also been making a game out of ‘upcycling’ by shopping in my own “janmart” and repurposing what I’ve got or making a challenge to fulfill my new awesome idea for free. . Not a surprise that Jan Mart is well stocked 😂. I try to get the rush of spending without spending. I still have to work hard not to overspend $20 at a time because that adds up fast. But at least it’s better than $100 at a time
Whenever I see a new psychiatrist and go through the intake they’ll often say you don’t meet the criteria for bipolar even though I have drastic ups and downs and manic episodes always revolving around spending especially high end products ( cars, boats, electronics). My last episode was a $40 Jeep which led to bankruptcy. I have incorporated the envelope system recently and it has helped for tiny miscellaneous purchases. I now know my depression, anxiety and manic episodes have led to my crazy spending. It is as you say complicated and very difficult to stop. Being aware of my struggles is the beginning for sure.
The timing isnt ironic it's a wake up slap. Rob, if you only knew that I am legit trying to think of an excuse to cancel plans I made for today knowing good and well it was out of line. No need in beating myself up, more a definitive reminder to *slow down* Cheers to 2025 channel success & growth.
I know it sounds redundant here in Italy we got the greatest Psycologist! I at a certain point had 3😇, so you’re not alone… That was btw before I was diagnosed and now on meds luckily don’t feel that need anymore.

I have Bipolar II where there are more depressive episodes than mania , i have 4 days of hypomania euphoria and then switch to depression again. Why do people think its less severe ?? In my opinion BIPOLAR is severe anyway doesnt matter what type you have , its like saying Type 2 diabetes is less severe than Type 1 diabetes etc. Bipolar is severe either way. End of story
When I am manic and hypomanic I just go to all my shopping apps and just shop, shop, shopping 🛍. I have such fun. Then I talk to myself and I say get out of this app. I do look at my bank account but honestly there are things that I want but don't need. I'm going to listen more of what you say. I did alot of them when I was younger but still need to start them up again.
For me, one of the spending motives is productivity-driven. Will often have a lot of investigations and projects on the back-burner, which may end in eventual purchase when affordability permits and research is concluded. When (hypo)manic, it is easy to burn through them all in rapid succession, consequences be damned. I suppose a tip for addressing it - albeit not a great one - is better awareness of mood. Uncharacteristically commenting on random RUclips videos at 04:00, for example, is a good clue that the level might be incorrect.

I don't have credit cards saved in any site, for controlling spending and mainly for preventing credit card/identity theft. Everytime I want to buy anything I have to create a virtual credit card with the exactly amount I want to spend in insert manually the number, date and cvc. Other thing is having the rule of never buying a thing before 1 or 2 weeks. I have the rush of buying, but then I leave it on the shopping cart. I add things, but next day I go and ask do I really need this item? Will I use it this or next week? Do I still have something similar? Then I leave the site/app and if I still want to feel the rush, I change ti another shopping cart and add or delete stuff. Like for me is difficult to make decisions, I ask all the above decisions and then star doubting myself, what works in my favour.
Oh the irony of this video popping up. I'm filing for bankruptcy but have to get a loan to pay the fees. Thank you for the video, hopefully It'll help me in the future.
Cash only doesn’t seem to work for me because many places I frequent (in Fairfax County, Virginia) are either now cashless or prefer cashless payments. I also pay my rent electronically. Same with my utilities and other bills. Something my sister-in-law (always my sister … at least to me) once told me to figure out how many hours at my pay rate I’d need to work to afford an item. That kinda worked. But for those who are salaried … take your annual pay rate and divide it by 2080 for your hourly rate. There’s roughly 2080 working hours in a year. I’m Andrew.
I have one credit card with a $300 limit. I've been purposely keeping myself to that one credit card with that low limit because I know I'll get myself in major trouble with a large purchase if I increase my limit or get more cards. I don't do big purchases with my debit card because I know it's attached to my bills, and I may not have the money for either.
