@Read Your Bible and by your statement you said "IF" there is a god. God has not been proven. Its all mythology and you can pick a part most of the stories in the bible with logic. Noah flood for example, 3x the amount of water on earth appeared and disappeared in 1 year. Animals came from all over the world and didnt eat for years because the salt water would have killed most of the plant life on earth leaving nothing for anyone to eat. And the salty ground will not produce a anything. No fresh water because it mixed with the saltwater in the ocean makes for a 0 percent survival rate with only 8 people. The animals that need the cold climate would have died going to the ark in the desert. Its not true.
The premise is God magic, that's the most unbelievable part. If God magic was real, that's the least I'd expect from a weak minor local deity.

This apologist's "no magic allowed, purely natural explanation" has a serious/fatal flaw. Soldiers in armies at that time carried shields to defend themselves by blocking/deflecting thrown spears/javelins, stones from slings, and arrows. The first thing I would do as such a soldier in any real hail storm would be, you know, put my f'n shield over my head!

Alf Lyle my first thought also. You got a shield, use it. Gather together and use your shields as one big cover.
It wouldn't even take thought. It's instinct to cover our heads with our hands and arms and turn our sides to incoming attacks and projectiles. We do it without even thinking. If they had shields they would have done this subconsciously.

I don’t know, baseballs falling at ~100 mph could easily break someone’s guard. Maybe, the existence of shields is the reason half of them survived.

I agree that History isn't a credible source. But a small point of correction, in Trent's defense, he didn't directly cite Ancient Aliens. He cited the website for the channel that also makes that show - which is almost as bad. After all, it says a lot about a channel, which poses as being about "history," when the most credible show in it's pseudoscience, conspiracy theory, and bullshit lineup is a reality TV show called "Pawn Stars."

In either case, there are a bunch of other websites that don’t publish Ancient Aliens who also pass this story of 1000 deaths due to a sudden cold, rainy, hail/thunder storm including Wikipedia, historic-uk, weatherconcierge, ancientorigins, worldhistoryproject, thehistorydatabase and others.

That's as good as admitting it's all made up. In fact, you're probably ( no, make that DEFINITELY) better off reading great literature for insights into the human condition. The butchery, genocide, incest, murder, land grabbing, theft, adultery etc that has "God's" blessing in the Old Testament is disgusting. In fact, it's hardly surprising that so many Evangelical preachers are money grubbing shysters feeding off the gullible. They truly are following their God of the Old Testament. The Hebrew God isn't even as entertaining as the gods of Mount Olympus, who were a pretty amoral bunch admittedly.

I thought about that as well. Why is he taking another goddess as proof for his own God (who is the only and allmighty right?). It just doesn't make any sense whatsoever
The way it seems to me is that A) a historical event occurred, B) a superstitious society explained it as an act from the gods. While it may clearly be embellished, there is some truth to be extracted, namely that many people died as a result of hail.
To be fair to Trent, he didn't say it was true because of the folk song, he mentioned them, but then brought up a scientific analysis of the skeletons to make his case.
Confirmation bias:
Dude searches the net for 2 minutes until he finds something that matches his faith and calls it a day instead of checking the validity.
Point here is you can find confirmation for any point of view on the internet. Finding an accurate support of your view is more difficult.

Of course the idea of armies of hundreds of thousands of soldiers is impossible. Archaeology has shown that there was less than in a million people living in all of Canaan at the time. All documented battles during that period had armies of a few thousand at the largest.
Plus the logistics involved. But even more damning is the fact that to add significance to things, people back then just... added zeroes. That's why so many figures lived for "centuries"; they lived decades but people added a zero. Got a stable filled with 400,000 horses? Try 40. That sort of thing. It's only fairly recently that historians have cared about being pointedly accurate instead of simply writing down whatever they wanted to make their rich patrons happy.

I've been watching your videos casually for a couple years, but this got me to subscribe. Putting in the actual research to track down info and examine its veracity, rather than just taking a line on a webpage as the 'gospel' truth, is what I appreciate most in atheist content. Well done.

Please continue on with this good work we need to pull together if science and reason are to shine through the darkness of superstition and ignorance. The problem is this world is covered with them. Even a post apocalyptic event we rationals would have to survive them. Which I'm sure they will sell the bullshit of them being the chosen one's.. So I have no hope for the world ever being cleansed of them and there malevolent beliefs.

That's the thing I have no need for anyone or anything to go anywhere. The religious the non religious all have a place in this world. It's the violent ones that I have concerns about. The o e that would harm my daughters because they don't strictly adhere to there beliefs.. I think there is enough space in this world for all of us.. Years back I tried reading the bible from cover to cover. It didn't work out well. I gave up on the early books pretty fast, especially the long list of begats and the one that listed who were the "fathers of doing things for the first time", like living in tents instead of simply looking at tents or something I guess.
I skipped all the way to Revelations after that. Since then I've been describing it as "the first ever recorded blog post of a guy tripping on magic mushrooms". Fan fiction is a step up.

Two minutes of research is perfectly reasonable for someone with confirmation bias. All he needed to make himself feel better was to find one anecdote that agreed with the conclusion he had already decided upon. It isn't as though he cared about the Truth.

The "Magic of the gaps" argument is also begging the question. They are basically trying to prove the Bible is true which would prove god is real, but in order for the Bible to be true, god would have to be real. It's just circular reasoning.

I just finished watching Prince of Egypt for the millionth time and It made me wonder again where the evidence for The Exodus is. Where the stone Ten Commandments are. These things fade over time sure, but within the 3000 years that these events should have happened within? It should have been no problem to keep something as crucial to humanity as the Ten Commandments safe.

One other possible point.... if Trent is saying that there just happened to be a massive hailstorm and not a miracle of God, why did the hail seemingly only hit the other guys and spare the Israelites? I guess I don't get the attempt to explain what happened naturally given that the Bible explicitly says it was of God's specific doing.

Joshua 10:11 you see that the hail hit while the Amorites were fleeing. If they are fleeing, naturally they are trying to be at a distance from the Israeli army.
11:30 Sorry but I don’t buy it. I don’t know who “researched” this but how is it possible to say that an indentation on a fractured skull has been caused by a block of ice? Wouldn’t a rock be far more probable? Even considering that stoning people was a thing in the past? And stones have always been used as weapons, from arrowheads to projectiles for slings and catapults?
Not only that, but the weather conditions with the initial study only allowed scientists to stay up there for a brief period of time. They only managed to examine a few skeletons and get samples from a handful of them. So how anyone could possibly claim that that scientific study showed that all 200 died from hail, clearly never read any of the studies. To his credit, Trent didn't make that claim, btw. But several of the popular news blogs reporting on this story did (spreading misinformation in the process), and it really pissed me off. I fucking hate lazy journalism!
"Skull fractures ... not caused by any known weapons at that time", except as you say sling stones, which have been around since Neolithic and probably Paleolithic times, and btw didn't David slay Goliath with a sling shot in the bible, so this guy can't claim he never heard of them?
The Romans had slingers in their armies 1800 years ago. It was a very low status skirmishing role, but a with practise anybody can use a sling, they're cheap to make and the stones can be actual stones, the earth is full of them. They can also use metal cast sling shots, but a sling shot stone is quite enough to fracture a skull or arm or leg bone.

Interesting how “miraculous truths” only seemed to happen before written history, or when written documentation was not as common or easily accessible.

Also, a small group of the Lewis & Clark expedition got caught out in a thunderstorm with baseball size hail and no one was killed. They got got bruised and battered pretty hard but no one died.

When I was in my late teens, I went to an amusement park where it started to hail while I was just getting onto one of their wooden rollercoasters. I remember it hurting having the hail stones pelting my face, especially after we picked up speed. I never thought about it, but maybe I died that day. I'm pretty sure the hail killed me and I must have re-spawned or something. It must be true because I just wrote it down here and this is the infallible word of me. There, now you cannot disprove it. :-P

Actually, that figure itself seems a little ridiculous and worthy of criticism.
If there were 600,000 male soldiers then it would probably mean that there were also at least 600,000 females israelites and likely even more elderly and children.
That would put the israelite population strictly above 1,200,000 and likely closer to 1.5 to 2 million or higher (not every male fights).
For the time, I don't think that the tiny holy land could support populations in the millions, and I didn't even consider the other ethnic groups in the land that could supposedly rival the Israelites in military might and thus they must have had populations in the millions, too.
Rome at its height could only deploy 250,000 legionnaires, Han China around 300-400 thousand warriors. No way in hell bronze age Jews could field 600,000, hell I doubt they could have raised 40,000.

As recently as two generations ago in 'developed' Western European society, it was not uncommon to see fewer than 50% of live births reach their fifth birthday. My grandmother, born just at the end of the 19th century in Dublin, Ireland. was only one of two siblings to survive to adulthood from nine children born to her mother. It's worth noting that her family were not starving peasant farmers but prosperous middle class merchants who subsequently moved their business interests to England--but still 1 in 3 of my grandmother's children died in the mid-20th C before attaining adulthood.
Summary: while women might have borne 5 children, the likelihood that more than one or two would survive to maturity in a pre-industrial, largely agrarian community, is diminishingly small. Take away the advantages of modern health care, bearing an average of five children seems to be heading for a stagnating population size rather than one showing exponential growth. Unless, of course, we assume divine intervention, in which case all bets are off and rational discussion is pointless.
@roasted pancakes even with the high estimate of an army of 700.000 soldiers it still was between 1 and 2 % of the estimated population of the Roman Empire, the same figures transponed on Josua's 600.000 would require a population in Palestine alone of between 50 and 60 million people.
I know these are an older series, but seriously thank you. I absolutely love your videos. I came from a Baptist background and Chrisitanity is both judgemental and makes no sense. It feels great to know the truth and not be judged for it by this great community of free thinkers.
Trent lost credibility when he cited searching the internet without giving sources. I think deep down Trent knows he is arguing from a weak position while appearing to look intellectual and being supported by facts.

Excellent and thorough research, Thomas. Thank you so much for expending the effort that most of don’t have the time to do. I despise the fundamental dishonesty of religious apologists, but refuting them with facts can be very tedious.
My father and I finally had a conversation about his faith and my lack of faith. As my first point to our conversation I quoted my sons grandmother. I had asked her what makes her continue to have faith in ‘G’. Her response was classic... she said “to believe you need to have childlike faith”. My response was, “so basically, I throw out logic, historical data and everything I’ve learned since the age of 6...which means to believe I have to be ignorant?”. My son and I stopped discussing his Christian religion ten years ago, I’m pretty sure my father and I will follow the same. We haven’t discussed it since.

When I was stationed at Fort Sill in ‘99 we were hit with golf ball sized hail. My whole platoon were hit with falling hail as we ran inside. The worst injury was from slipping on a hailstone and that was a bad scrape. The rest of us had minor bruises at most.

This psalm is among the “Imprecatory Psalms” that speak violence against the enemies of God, particularly in this psalm those who destroyed the Jews’ capital city, took them for slaves, and killed _their_ babies (Babylon). These Jews in exile were then told to sing them “a song of Zion” to insult and humiliate the defeated Jews, to which the psalmist cries for revenge against them. Verse 9 is a call for the absolute destruction of the entire nation of Babylon, and because infants are the future generation, this meant TOTAL destruction. This is an intensely emotional, and quite graphic, call for justice. Moreover, the correct translation seems to be “happy are those” rather than “blessed are those.” No Christian takes this verse to be an order to go out and start killing babies, especially in the light of Romans 12:17-19. You may not like my explanation, but there you go.

Well, this passage, again, is a call to exact reciprocal justice, albeit in a very graphic manner. I would never take it upon _myself_ to smash any child’s head, especially if it was unwarranted. No Christian interprets it this way. Only you interpret it this way to put dirt on Christians.

I’m SO GLAD I found your channel! I have questioned the validity of Christianity my entire life, starting as a child. I was raised Catholic and NOTHING about that massive cult is biblically correct- most poignantly their rituals and practices. Then I was Agnostic for a little while (I should have stayed Agnostic, but I digress…). Hungry for human connection, I reverted back to Christianity, specifically non-denominational Christianity. The entire time between 2010-2016 NONE of my questions could be answered and the Bible & faith itself gave my ex enough excuses to put me through narcissistic abuse throughout those years. After leaving him I went through a hard reset to seek out proven truth.
Like you, Trent, I have discovered that the Bible (and later the Torah and Quran taking a page from the Roman Catholics guide to human subjugation) is nothing more than a hodgepodge of stories strewn together to give elites the power to subjugate the populace of the regions lost at the fall of the Roman Empire. A practice repeated throughout history and present day to justify monarchies, and racial/political/legislative/socio-economic oppression. The masses who follow any form of the so-called “Abrahamic” religions (Judaic, Christian and Islamic CULTS) are indoctrinated (BRAINWASHED) from infancy to believe that these text are true and “the ONLY way” to their “salvation”. It’s all a huge, rotting heap of steaming bullshit.

Deborah Shaw My father and his wife belong to a mega church in Kentucky. The only reason that that church is closed for services is because the governor in Kentucky ordered all churches to close. (Not just churches, of course!) Kentucky is very fortunate that they do not have a Republican governor.
There is no doubt in my mind that were that church still holding services they would be going to them.
There are several volcanoes on the Sinai peninsula (column of smoke and fire anyone?). I could easily see some conflict, at some point in history, being impacted by a sudden lethal storm of "hail". Add in a loud boom, and this would likely be attributed to a deity in an ancient society. Certainly a smaller conflict, but that's what word of mouth is for.

My aunt at 6 years old got hit in the head by a baseball sized piece of hail. She suffered a concussion but it didn't kill her. If a piece of hail that big didn't kill a child that small i don't think a full grown man with a helmet will suffer much harm except maybe a slight distraction from the noise.

Rattlesnake bites were once thought to be lethal in most cases. I just checked; 1 in 736 bites is fatal. 33% of those bit never receive antivenom and still survive. Hailstorms are the same. What was once thought to be deadly is now viewed as a minor inconvenience. These Biblical accounts, like rattlesnake bites, are a HUGE exaggeration. I mean -a wall that kills 120,000 sleeping soldiers?!? Come on! After a few of these guys were killed, wouldn't the rest have awakened and skedaddled? Most folks caught in a hailstorm would find a building or a tree or a cave or some other protective place. I have been caught in at least a dozen hailstorms in the last thirty years; the worst damage I had were some VERY minor welts and the cold, icy stings. I was okay after ~ five minutes. In one of these hailstorms I was in the open desert and was pummeled for over an hour before I found a store in which to hide. Man, I was c-c-cold!!!! I survived with NO damage.

My grandfather had a heavy duty Ford flatbed ( 3 ton ) truck parked in a metal barn. This was in the early 1950's in Kansas. The metal roof was ripped off and the truck beaten up bad with huge dents ( you could set a grapefruit in the dents ) most windows cracked, the exterior mirrors half torn off. As it was a farm truck it was just used as is for another two decades. Just sayin'

In a South African province of KwaZulu-Natal there was a severe hail storm with ice as big a chicken eggs a few years ago. Homes and cars were damaged. People were hit hard and only escaped with couple of bruises on the head. The only casualties were sheep and goats. In 2015, another hail storm hit parts of the Soweto township in Johannesburg, South Africa and again homes and cars were damaged but no casualties at all.
