Sun n Fun 6: The Departure/WEATHER Decisions
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- We decided to depart Sun n Fun at Lakeland, Florida a bit earlier than planned to beat some forecasted bad weather on our route home. We get a close up of an F15 playing in the pattern prior to our departure, get up to 8500 feet VFR, make a plan to navigate around some storms enroute and end up picking up an IFR flight plan from ATC.

most adorable co pilot in the air!!#gojamie
I agree Maddy! :)
@@310Pilot BTW...IM A UGA ALUM ALSO...80'
Jaime, like the new glasses! No squinting.
Pick your way through the weather then get some food, priorities :) . Nice flight as always. Spotted an 'N' reg Cessna caravan outside our club yesterday , long way from home. cheers from Aussie
Ha ha...that's right Paul. Get past the bad stuff then relax over a nice lunch. Wonder if they took the wings off and shipped the caravan or loaded up with internal tanks...that's a llloooonnnggg way. :)
Great vlog man. Love the clouds section :)
Glad you're enjoying it Ko!
Thanks for another fun ride.
You're welcome Karl!
hectic departure.....
Good to hear you say if we have to turn around we will do so.... The mark of a good safe pilot. Good job of showing off the benefits of the autopilot. great video guys
Thank you Wayne! Completing a flight at all cost is NEVER worth it. The autopilot was a big benefit for me to be able to have more time to analyze the weather ahead and make a plan of attack. :)
Kevin, I never understand why a lot of pilots always want to fly VFR when traveling somewhere? I almost 100% of the time fly IFR wherever I go. Makes life so easy and stress free. Good decision making and piloting on your part; I’m just wondering.
@@malibujack4852 >>> FWIW: I would think if for nothing else, it would contribute to to Pilot proficiency....
@@310Pilot >>> GOOD to see that you do not suffer from _GET-THERE-ITIS...._
Any reason for cutting our the IFR clearance? Was hoping to see how the routing was input and selected into the autopilot. As always enjoyable.
Really sorry about that David! If I could go back in time I would have left the cameras on for that. It really just boils down to the battery life on these long 4 hour flights. By the time I realized it would be cool to show and have it for my airborne IFR pickup, I was too busy flying the plane to bother with the cameras. Times like those it's best to forget them and stay safe. I'll make sure next time to plan my battery life better. :)
@@310Pilot No worries Kevin. Safety first is paramount. Looking forward to all your future travels and uploads. DD
Great vid Kevin! - how come the plane starts out wet?
Glad you liked it Don! I can't remember if it rained the night before or if that was just a lot of dew on the plane.

By the way ,most of my family live in the Atlanta area and are Georgia Fans, we've had fun with football season !!
Looks like both teams are set for a really good Year, I hope Georgia takes out South Carolina this year!!
What headset does Jamie use?
She uses the Quiet Technology Halo's.
Awesome!! From the fighters to the clouds. Thanks for taking us.
You're welcome....glad you enjoyed it!
one of your best videos...nice job picking through the weather...Your new S-Tek worth the money for sure, you were quite sharp as well! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Andrew! The S-TEC was an amazing help during this flight. Without it I would have probably landed short to make a weather plan for crossing that line as opposed to having the time to make a plan in the air.
I love it. Jim Morrison lives on. Jaimie sounds so stressed. You are a trooper and a terrific copilot. You guys are real and fun to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it Bill! I like a little Doors from time to time. :) I think it was more being tired from a long week and waking up early to break down camp in the heat. :)
"All right babe" Kevin's phrase before take-off!
Ha ha...its' the time to go phrase. Maybe I should change that up? :)

that F15 tho
You should try the prop at Cullman just below Huntsville. Great little dinner on the top of the FBO

Another kick a$$ video. Break On Thru To The Other Side. Jaime singing The Doors. Awesome!!!!!
You call that singing?
Simon Cowell would beg to differ.
Thank you Christopher...glad you enjoyed the video! I liked Jaime's quick rendition of The Doors as well. :)

Hey if you all are coming down this year to Sun and Fun, hit me up. Would love to come meet you. I was born and raised in St.Charles and now live outside Winter Haven. I'm about 20 minutes away from Linder.
Great video. This has been a very informative series. Thanks so much.
Thank you Lars...glad you enjoyed the series. Only one more left in this one then on to different flights. :)
Y'all have become, (yes, I live in Texas) my favorite YT flying channel! Hottest girl! Not just in looks but awesome in every way! And, a pretty decent pilot!😜 You both are pros!! And make great videos!!! Thank you!!

You're very welcome Michael...glad you enjoyed it!
I heard you on frequency today for the first time! Keep up the good work!
Pretty cool Jordan...it's a small world in aviation! Where were you flying at?
Funny. When you were using the backseat cam and fiddling around with your ipad, I found myself leaning to the right to get a better look over your shoulder. Had to remind myself I wasn't actually sitting in the backseat. ;)
Ha ha...mission success! :)
All I could think of during this video was, “I’m the navigator. I have a right to know where I’m going.” -Donn Eisle, CMP, Apollo 7 😊
Ha ha...that sums up her feelings about it. :) We worked it out and had an excellent lunch at Mt Vernon, IL. :)
Why didn’t you go IFR on this leg?
5 weeks and no cat videos. Still flying.
Those F-15s brought back great memories of my 31 years in the Air Guard as an air technician maintainer. Can you tell us what you did in the Air Force Kevin? Thanks for another great video from two great people.
I was an air traffic controller at Eglin and overseas for a bit. Eglin was a big F15 base at the time...those were always my favorite. Glad you enjoyed the video.
That's my neck of the woods. I'm a controller at Valdosta, but I live in Tallahassee and fly a musketeer out of Quincy. Moody provides our approach control.
Howdy fellow controller. Being a Georgia boy I like your neck of the woods. I was from up north in the state and that will always be home to me. :)
Just love watching yall
man it’s been 6 days since a video... have to fly more.....i’m living my love of flying thru you lol 😂
Ha ha...sorry. Usually try for just Friday's. The tech Tuesdays will be few and far between. I do have a ton of flights I need to edit and put out but it's hard for me to edit more than one a week. It's a ssssllllooooowwww process for me. :)
Another great flight! I liked the fast pace departures. Those Sun'n'Fun folks know how to manage traffic! I also liked the IFR portion and look forward to your next episode! :-) Don
Glad you liked it Don! ATC at these events do a great job of getting us all in and out safely. :)
The usual great video from you guys. I liked flying through the clouds and picking spots to fly between storms. I can see where it might be a little nerve racking for Jamie but she handles it very well. Look forward to the next video. Fly safe.
Glad you enjoyed it Dave! Always fun when you make it past the weather and can relax a bit. Jaime is an awesome co-pilot! :)
I believe that's Foreflight you have on your tablet... really nice to see where you are in relation to the weather. Makes decision making just that much easier. So hope to see the rest of your flight to Aurora. Take care and hi to Jamie! 🙋🏻♂️
Gilles, that is ForeFlight that I use on the iPad. Love having it tied in to the ADS-B weather and traffic to help make route decisions in flight. Having all this tech in the plane made this flight possible. Without the real time updates and the autopilot I would have landed short and checked things out/made a plan on the ground.
Decisions decisions!
Kevin and Jaime, Thank you for the ride Always fun. Until the next time.
You're welcome Bill...glad you enjoyed it!
What year is the 310?
Riding with you guys is always a pleasure. Thanks again for sharing!
You're welcome Michael...glad you're enjoying the channel! :)
Being from Madison, WI, it is awesome watching you guys fly around my area! Ever land at Truex airfield “Dane County Regional”?
Ha ha...I had to look up what airport you were talking about Jonny! I've always just called it and heard it called Madison. Yes, we've landed there a couple times. We have a video landing there...it's called Jet Room in Madison...if you look back at my past videos.
yea Jet Room is paring for planes... also a phenomenal restaurant I highly recommend if you have not ate there. Yea Madison airport, I have heard it called that too! Being born here and with Madison airport sharing with our Military hangers, us locals have a couple different names for it!! But I will definitely look up your video. That is my home airport and the one I will be learning from! Thanks man!! @@310Pilot
So when is the AC install going to happen? either that or a snow cone machine!!!
Ha ha...it's always nice and cool up at altitude. Now if I lived in south FL I would for sure be looking to upgrade to some A/C. :)
Very cool ride through the clouds! Stay safe!
Glad you enjoyed it Herb! :)
So doing a little cloud surfing around La Grange were you
Sure was...if you had a video of me from 20 years ago it would probably also be cloud surfing around LaGrange. :)
Oh I see a vision jet
Kevin what's top speed of your plane?
Max cruise is about 190 knots/220 mph. I generally cruise around 175-182 knots true airspeed. Not sure the red line (never exceed) speed is off hand. It's on the airspeed indicator but I generally stay nice and far from that to not stress out the plane.
Hey Kevin, how long is the flight from Lakeland to Aurora in your 310? What do you figure your fuel costs are for that flight. I start my Flight training next month. I have lots of questions-sorry! Appreciate you posting.
Very good.
Enjoy your weekend .
Always a pleasure. 🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it Charlie! :)
RNAV slope/deep and wide! Break on throughashhhhhhh oh yeahhhhh
Jaime must have had too much fun at Sun & Fun. She was clearly tired, I was surprised she lasted as long as she did before crawling in the back seat. Thanks for bringing us along.
LOL. Boss lady wasn't having any of it.
You're welcome John! We were for sure tired after all the fun and sun of the week. Was nice to get back home. :)
Got so used to seeing the "310 Pilot" shirt on Jaime, I completely missed when she changed it.
Wheaton-Warrenville!
Ha ha...she bundled up in a break in the recording. :)
And, just to be clear, it's not that she changed shirts, it's the subject on the shirt. I know of that school (although we were Glenbard North people), and I've been up and down that road dozens of times. We lived in Carol Stream for five years before we moved to ARR.

great vid guys it has become my friday night viewing before bed
Thanks for the support redman! We're glad you're enjoying it. :)
That is hilarious, so the ol' conversation about "where do you wanna eat" happens regardless of the form of travel... lol
I'm enjoying the heck out of your videos. Thanks
Curious, does flying help your ATC job or does ATC help your flying? You two are in a very unique situation having done both. Regardless, it is very obvious that four eyes are better than two.
I think they both help each other. :) The flights always go better with my co-pilot!
Very nice video. What is the app that you are using for navigation on your tablet?
TY for yet another great Video
You're welcome Jack!
lucky man, i enjoyed the flight!
Very lucky indeed! Glad you enjoyed it . :)
what type of headset is she wearing. My wife is looking for one like that.
Oh My Goodness - The last video when you were explaining all the of the autopilot stuff and she said - Look at the all the lakes! Then this video when she said - Uh.. so are we headed towards those storms.. Deja Vu - flying with me and the family.. Great videos.. fun to watch.. I expect tons of videos on the Avidyne stuff :-)
Ha ha...glad you're enjoying it! I had zoomed out the weather screen and it made the storms look closer than we were. As soon as I get the rest of the Avidyne suite installed, I will do a bunch of fun videos highlighting them. :)
nice video Kev , any preference to filing IFR or just departing VFR and picking up in the air , Sun N fun clearance delivery must be crazy so I,m sure departing VFR was the best option .
It really depends on a lot of factors for me. At these events I will depart VFR if at all possible and pick it up in the air because the IFR's on the ground can take a while and gums up what they are trying to do. In general, I will depart VFR if I know the routing is more favorable (i.e. around a busy class B) and pick the IFR up where I know I will get a more direct routing. If it's low wx or I don't care about the routing or if I'm departing a rural place I may just get the IFR on the ground. In this case I also wanted to stay VFR so I could avoid the storms without worrying about going IMC. I didn't pick up the IFR till I knew I was clear and could remain clear of the storms.
@@310Pilot gotcha , I,m a low time IFR pilot so I,m always leaning towards filing and picking up clearance on the ground .(safety first ) Around NY its good to have that second set of eyes on you after departure , and the airspace worry is taking away when I,m in the system . I,ll pick up an IFR enroute on one of these flights ..
Great video, thanks for the explanation of the plan for those storms. You look like you are really enjoying the new AP. I was skimming the tops of clouds like that 2 weeks ago, they were full of ice, lol. Fortunately the FIKI works well and we went lower to get out of it. Take care. Paul
Thanks Paul...glad you liked it! The autopilot makes long flights filled with weather MUCH more enjoyable. I've always heard the Cirrus FIKI works really well. Glad it did the same for you. I'm not FIKI but have the boots, alcohol windshield and hot props for good escape living I the midwest...luckily I haven't needed them yet but make sure they are always working just in case. :)
This was really kool you 2. I love to fly but no nothing how too. So this is really kool..
Nice job (again) handling the busy departure. Thanks for sharing another fun video!
Thank you Mike...glad you enjoyed it! :)
Great Video Kevin. FYI, there’s a good meat and three (Posey’s) that’s about five minutes from Huntsville Executive Airport for future reference. There used to be an airport beater loaner years ago when we were based there. I always enjoy seeing you flying through Huntsville. Shoot me a text and I’ll treat you and Jaime for lunch/dinner whatever. Be nice to meet the two of you. Keep’em coming!
Thank you for the heads up....we will keep that in mind for the future. I'll try to give a heads up the next time we are in the area if we know ahead of time.
I like video !
Thank you Igor...I'm glad!
So, if you just flew back to Chi...Aurora, IL, youz not goin' to FlightSimExpo, Orlando???
Not making it there...back home with the kids and work. :)
Great vid..thx! Great piloting AND Co-Piloting.. is Jamie stressed about high density traffic conditions?? Fear of scattered aluminum showers?? Of something to do with being a controller? Either way...you're a lucky man!! It wouldn't be half as much fun solo....for you or your viewers!!
(During the fast forward taxi before departure....did we see a little drift off the left side of the taxiway??? Or was there a bunny crossing the taxiway and you were trying to save its life?? :)
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you! She loves flying just going in and out of these high density events like OSH and SnF aren't her favorite. :) You'd have to put it in slow motion on the video to see but when I drifted left it was to avoid and opposite direction experimental aircraft that taxied off our wing quickly. :)
Great vid, excellent reasoning and decision making! Even though I’m watching this on my iPad
From the comfort of my armchair I was quite relieved when you made it through and were able
To carry on to your destination 😀 Looking forward to Friday.
Stephen. 🏴
Thank you Stephen for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the video!! :)
I have a question to ask but first off I want to say, my daughter and I love watching you and your wife's show!!! My questions is, well, truth be told it was my 8 year old daughter that spotted it. She asks "Why is he always touching the controls, knobs and such? He is always fidgeting with something!!" I told her that you have to keep everything fine tuned. But she said she wanted to know why. So, i told her i would send this to you. Thank you. He safe and keep the wings level!!
Really glad you guys are enjoying the channel Brandon!! You are correct in that I'm always fine tuning things. As the altitude changes, I have to increase or decrease the throttle to compensate for the difference in air density. Those are the two farthest left levers in the center. The right two (red ones) adjust the fuel/air mixture in the cylinders by adjusting the fuel flow...this also has to be changed around depending on the altitude and power settings. The middle two levers are the propeller controls and they adjust the angle of the blades. I take off with them full forward which makes the blades flat. As soon as I get to about 1000 feet above the ground I set cruise climb settings and this requires pulling the throttle back to about 24 inches of manifold pressure and the propellers back to 2450 rpm. Then in cruise I set the props at about 2350 rpm. If the props are not synced well together then the harmonics gets off and can sound annoying. The prop governors control the pitch with oil and they do a fairly good job of staying where I set them but occasionally they change a bit and I have to fine tune. Hope that helps....it's just scratching the surface of some other the things I'm doing in there. :)
Another great video. I love watching your videos. You do a great job explaining everything and it's just fun flying with you guys. I'm still trying to understand all the radio codes and how to talk with air traffic control.Makes me want to get a upgraded computer for my flight simulator.
Glad you're enjoying the channel!! Thanks for the feedback as well. Hope you continue to enjoy...we have a fun Gulf Coast series starting this Friday. :)
This is a great example of an experienced pilot, working alongside technology. You showed coolness in your decision making, while the AP/ GPS etc. maintained steady control of the aeroplane. Another wonderful video Kevin and Jaimie.
Thank you Barry!! If this was a few years ago before having this tech in the cockpit, I would have landed and checked the weather from the ground and tried to make a decision. It was so much easier, safer and more efficient to be able to do this inflight. Loving all the new tech I have keeping us safe. :)
Had to watch it twice...missed the IFR upgrade first time. Set me to wondering if VFR rules slightly different over there than in Aus. Tks.
Sorry about the confusion there Ray! I wish I had the cameras rolling when I picked up the IFR but I was trying to conserve battery and the decision happened really quick while I was avoiding some cells so I just focused on flying and got to the cameras when I had time.
Sorry that comment was for a different vlog (Matt Guthmiller). Always enjoy your vlogs. I fly out of Hayward Ca if ever on the was coast hit me up.
Glad you're enjoying ours as well Jim! I'll keep you in mind if we ever make it out for our west coast swing. :)
Mr. observant here - - - what happened to Your new shoulder belt restraint system ?????????? Is this a different Airplane ???? - -🤔
Very observant. I didn't have the shoulder harnesses installed until we got back from this trip. Tuesdays video broke my usual chronological delivery so I could help people that have been asking me for more detail about the STEC 3100 autopilot. :)
Lot's of sunburn makes you sleepy - been there. Orange juice helps clear that burn out of your system and replaces you vitamin C. Highly recommend. Pulp/no pulp your choice. The best product my Florida offers other than MouseLand and white sandy beaches on the way to the Bahamas. Glad you guys had a great time. It isn't Oshkosh, but on the bright side... it isn't Oshkosh!
And to echo everyone else - thanks for inviting all of us along. Glad I discovered you guys and how really gracious of you to share your vacays and excellent flight skills with everyone. I know it keeps you on your toes to show the very best choices possible when your flying is out there for review by everyone. You are more than up to that task as an example of just how much fun general aviation can be when it's done right. Keep it up!
Thank you for the nice comments and the continued support! Glad you're enjoying the channel. I'll remember the OJ thing for the next sunburn. :) We love Florida and our only complaint is we don't get down there enough.
The hat’s comin’ off! Another great video. “VMCish”

Awesome videos!! Quick question. What headset is Jamie using? I just bought a Zulu headset but I like the idea of an in ear headset too.
Glad you're enjoying them Mike! I LOVE my Zulu's. :) Jaime is using the quiet technologies Halo's and really enjoys them as well.
“Maybe we should land somewhere where there is a restaurant”. You guys crack me up. You had your hands full, great job..
Ha ha...love the freedom of general aviation. Just take off and land wherever your heart desires. :)
Very interesting flying. Betcha it ain't often you see a F-15 fly across your windscreen...
Ha ha...not since I got out of the Air Force. :)
Kevin I'm really glad you let those jets go ahead of you cuz I don't think you'd want one flying up your tailpipe. Also I need to get me one of those t-shirts with the 310 pilot those look awesome Jamie did a good job on the design.
She did a great job with them Robert! No chance of me outrunning an F15 for sure. :)
So nice to not have to worry about terrain while negotiating the weather. Always a pleasure to ride along. Thanks Kevin! Beautiful airplane.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you! :)
Go to Mt Vernon!! My family comes from there originally, I didn't think anyone else on Earth had heard of it....
The next video is the arrival into Mt Vernon! Nice little town and we borrowed a car from the FBO to drive to a great restaurant...can't remember the name right now.
When they are super busy do they like to do flight following????
For ATC, flight following is to the max extent they are able. If they are simply too busy to handle another plane, they will turn you down. I always ask and if they say no (rare) then I just try with the next controller down field.
“Spring” is the time for unpredictable pop-up showers in the Southeast. Looks like you two got plenty of sun in Sun n Fun
Always keeps you on your toes when flying this time of the year. :)
Good stuff Kevin, bet it would be kinda lonely without the first mate being with you. Anyways, you both be safe and until next time, were out!
Glad you enjoyed it Chris! It does get a bit lonely when she sacks out...you'll see in the next video I'm just rambling to my self as she snoozes behind me. I try to land without waking her up. :)
Another great video and fun to watch/be part of the thought process and decision making of where to go and where to pick the perfect spot to do some cloud surfing. Looks just a little easier to get out of there than to go in. By the looks of both of you, you guys looked like you were beyond ready to be home and sleep in your own bed and relax. Great job!
Thank you Papa...glad you enjoyed it! Cloud surfing is always fun. :) Getting out for sure is easier than getting in but a lot of that is timing as well. We were worn out and ready to get back home for sure...it was a blast though!
I am sure it being at an airport you guys got refueled there, was wondering if they brought it to your spot or was it a major cluster-f__k to get them them?
They drove the fuel truck right out to the plane on the grass. Worked great and surprisingly was pretty quick.
Always enjoy this channel. You two are too cute. You are a natural at informative video narration. Your flight missions, mostly because they are not repetitive. Very entertaining and enjoyable channel. As always thanks for taking us along with you.
Safe travels and Blue Skies

Why do I keep coming back to these videos! Why do I continue to like them? Because I do!!
Whatever the reason, we are glad that you continue to come back!! Thank you for the support!!
Another great video! My aviation vocabulary increases with each one: tally-ho, no joy, etc.
