Rajiv's New Halloween Tudor Costume - PART I

  • Rajiv is obsessed with historic clothing and has been making clothes (both period and modern pieces) since he was a teenager. His next Halloween costume will be a Tudor doublet and trunk hose, inspired by garments made in 1618 that are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection.
This is a monumental undertaking on Rajiv's part, so we begin the journey with an introductory video that will likely develop into many, many more that chronicle this process.
Today Rajiv meets with Alexa Figuerres who will be drafting and cutting the pattern for Rajiv's costume.

Finding you was the best thing for me honestly. As someone who is interested in fashion (very amateur here- barely know some brands). I changed my major to anthropology right before the pandemic and I couldn’t find what to concentrate underneath that. Someone posted a comment on a past video of yours where they describe all of “these” jobs as heritage crafts and my career path has gotten a lot clearer. Thank you so much Rajiv!

Made some incredible things. Working on a loin cloth, leather no straight lines or solid colors), not just any loin cloth! One side is thicker thsn the other. Covers 1.5 butt cheeks, leather lined with thin fleece, added rattlesnake skin across back above the butt. There is are leather strings that attack animal teeth/ wolf and gator/ a 2ft long hair braid, an owl feather, metal clasp on the narrow side, a few wood beads, the rattlesnake rattle. They were all made movie quality.

I love that you’ve carried on the historic practice of refashioning clothing to extend the life of garments….no “fast fashion” here! I came at historical costuming through theater too…now when I go to an event where everyone is in costume, it really does feel like stepping back in time, learning dances, how to handle a train and gloves, it’s all so interesting when you are experiencing it for yourself….currently I’m constructing the underpinnings and hand painting silk for an 18c ball I’ll be attending this fall….looking forward to seeing your costume evolve! Side note, “A Stitch in Time” with Amber Butchart is a fascinating series….

@@rajivsurendra your dress is gorgeous, by the way! Of course you would make it out of something lasting in quality (silk, I presume?). Also in college (George Brown for fashion) I spent weeks making a reasonably historically accurate 18th century gown with stays for myself for Halloween, but out of polyester satin. It got trashed when my friends and now husband elected to do Halloween in Kensington Market. It rained and drunk folks kept stepping on my robe a la français!!! Meanwhile my fella spent two hours making a cardboard robot costume and he was a huge hit everywhere. He looked like Bret from Flight of the Conchords. This is a very 2007 story!
Thanks for the wonderful content, Rajiv!

I too have so many things I'd love to make in the way of costumes, but there are two of them that I really want to try. One is an Egyptian beaded tunic, recreated from one that was found in a lady's tomb, who lived during the 4th dynasty of King Khufu, nearly 4,500 years ago. The other one, well, it is a toss up for Captain Phasma, the Mandalorian Armorer OR Bo Katan-Cryze. (I might just make all three.😉)
Thank you again! Take care and be safe! 😊💖🙏
PS: I also like the Golden Siren from Jibaro (LD&R), but the story line behind it is too disturbing for me. 🥴

Well, I am inspired to make a lifetime costume now, probably a Directoire or Empire gown and turban! I’ll be tuning in for more installments.

Today I was so proud of myself because today I made some paper beads. After watching this video, I feel like a total failure. OK...not a total failure...
