Rajiv, this process didn’t stop in early 1900’s. I experienced this myself growing up in the 50’s and 60’s. Rural areas, and I’m sure the working class in cities as well, were full of moms (& possibly dads) fitting and sewing draped material to create their own patterns for clothing. My mom sewed all our clothes, scraps became matching doll outfits (or the doll itself!), blankets, quilts, pillow cases, dish cloths, towels, handkerchiefs, etc. Or those items became clothes.
It’s a lovely, meditative, hands on artistic process and it is so fun to see this project come to life!

I’m sure most people who sew know about this trick but I got to goodwill or some equivalent thrift store and find bedding sheets for a couple bucks and use that fabric for my mock-ups. 👍🏻 bonus if you like the color of the bedding as then they can be used as wearable mock-ups

I love making toiles or muslins. I always mark the stitching lines on the calico or muslin (or even old sheets etc) and the grain lines, then thread trace these lines with my machine. Once that’s done, I use silk thread (that I run through beeswax and iron to melt the wax. Yep…iron the thread!!) and baste the pieces together to see what adjustments are needed. Sometimes there’s a lot! I’m not great with fitting but I love the process of making toiles and at the end, the pieces of the toile become the pattern I use to cut out the final fabric. Satisfying!!
(And then there’s underlining with silk organza and so forth and so on. I need to do some more couture sewing again soon!)

I wanted to learn to quilt and sew my own clothes when I was younger, but it turns out that sewing involves far too much math for me! I still love watching skilled sewers like Bernadette Banner create beautiful and unique clothing. I'm only a little jealous.

I know very little about sewing but this was fascinating. I am excited to see if you selected the lace or plain collar for the doublet and if it will have the fancy pleating on the arms and chest. Will the trunk hose will have all those small cuts in them (not sure if that's the right term), and if those cuts are hemmed or left natural.

I love this stuff. I'm learning to sew myself and can make stuff from patterns but my goal is to be able to draft patterns myself from scratch. The 3 dimensional thing makes it a challenge and I really admire people who have skills in this area. I want to be able to make my whole wardrobe at some point. Are there any books Alexa or you recommend for learning how to draft your own patterns?

Buongiorno, I had to tell you I am doing what you are "dreaming" about. I was sewing with pattern and not knowing exactly what I was doing in the fitting department. We are with the army in Italy and am taking a sewing class in Italian, yes a lot of terms to learn at the begining. We are making our own base pattern and after4 years I have made really interesting pieces. Of course here I find fantastic fabrics for nothing because now I know where to go. I am not touching T-shirts but the rest I have made, even a beautiful cashmere coat. There are pleanty of interesting video on youtube to learn but you have to search for the right one. Your curiosity will bring you far I hope. Ciao

English usage (maybe any language really). Answering the question, "Do you mind if.....??" The answer is not ever 'yes' or 'sure.' I believe to answer the question, people (you find this in period movies too like Downton Abby), say 'No, I don't mind.'

Of course Rajiv will look tons better in that costume, but it is not one that I like; the balloon pants bother me the most. That was one way to show off your wealth and status, to use as much extremely expensive silk fabric as possible. Same with the women of that period.
What a lovey young lady she is. She has a skill, and it is not a simple one. She is also very well-spoken, and an excellent communicator.
I will certainly stay tuned. I have not idea how she will make that collar. Probably massive amounts of layered pleated fabric, and heavily starched? No clue.
