Prince is an underrated legend. Literally he got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just off his work in the 80s. I wish people would recognize him for all the stuff he went through just to show us how unfair the music industry truly is.
WB tried their best to end him in the 90s starting in like 93 because he wanted his masters. They started painting him as crazy to the media and people listened. Then, some 20 years Taylor Swift has the same message, “Artists should own their music” and people are like yeah she’s right they should. If Prince wasn't musician genius, he'd be philosopher or poet or someone changing the world for better anyway. Wildly intelligent, wise and profound man with strong personality who couldn't be manipulated or fooled, not even being ,bought' as 99% artists are - just selling out their souls (most of those 99% not even having real talents) for money and fame. Prince was so different not only as artist but also as human being. Absolutely rare gem to be found on many levels. He has my respect for his personality too because no matter if people are famous or not maaany go through life just not even thinking about life in deeper sense, not even trying to find out who they are, just accepting the routine and whatever society is serving them on their life's table, never questioning it, not critically thinking, not aiming for some sort of Truth behind all parade...but Prince was not like that. That's why I say take away fame, even musicality from him (hypothetically), he'd still be the rare kind of soul on this planet Earth.💜🌟
In a sense yea... Technically you could make more doing it on your own... But the thing is... With a record deal you are GUARANTEED 20 million dollars even if your albums don't go that great. Thats how you do it. Just when they count you out . Have them count the dollars they missed on that lost bet ! . sooooo no she screwed them !
Damn Prince and his math skills! He could be my sexy math teacher anytime :O And yep. Mariah got screwed like how she screwed up her dignity and the way she presents herself.
Every artist trying to get signed by labels should watch this video so later they won’t be signed to a nigga that’s signed to 4 more niggas just like Birdman.
But theres bit of detail missing theres a difference between mariah carey and prince in that mariah has to pay people to write alot of her material and play the instruments and produce etc unlike prince who can enter a recording studio by himself and write, perform, record, and produce everything just by himself without the need of a company help other than distribute his work so he deserves more than mariah Carey
A record label probably only gets half of an album's revenue because the rest stays with the retailer. So even if the artist got half of what the label took home (which would never happen in a traditional record deal), that's $4.50 per album. You'd have to sell more than twice as many albums than Prince's math to make Mariah's deal "not worth it" in even a slightly more realistic scenario. Plus that assumes Mariah's earnings per album were capped at $20 million. She earned a $20 million advance in anticipation of what the album would sell, and once the advance was earned back through record sales she would earn additional royalties, which were probably considerable if you're Mariah Carey signing a record deal in 2001. I'm not saying that the record industry doesn't screw artists all the time because they do. But in terms of money I don't think this was a situation of an artist getting screwed. This is still one of the biggest record deals of all time; Mariah negotiated this one from a position of strength.
Love Prince, but he was wrong here. The contract they're talking about was with Virgin in 2001. Carey never made another album that sold as well as her '90s stuff. Carey was let go from this contract after one release, superflop "Glitter" but she kept $49m. "Glitter" eventually sold about 1m copies, so if she'd done it princes way she'd have made at most $10m instead of nearly 5 times that. Mariah did not get screwed, the label got screwed!
I got a Question ⁉️ does a record labels request money from a new artist to sign a contract ... for an example they ask a new artist for $350 to $400 to get the contract drawn up so they can arrange the signature ...
Mariah Carey ended up with a better financial outcome despite the album’s poor performance. She received a total of $49 million from Virgin Records for the “Glitter” album and the termination of her contract. This was a significant amount, especially considering the album’s commercial struggles.
In a recent interview, musician Prince addressed the issue of record labels' contract deals, criticizing them for being too restrictive and favoring the labels over the artists. He argued that these contracts often tie artists down for long periods of time, limiting their creative freedom and preventing them from pursuing other opportunities. Prince also expressed concern about the lack of transparency in these agreements, stating that many artists are unaware of the true terms until it's too late. He urged for more fair and equitable deals that prioritize the best interests of the artists and allow them to maintain control over their own careers.
They offer you 20 million flat for that one album if that album makes 60m you only got twenty million of it ... and the record company comes out on top.
As I understand it, $___ record deal usually means they’re (the label) going to put up that amount of money to make and promote the music. It’s an advance, a loan. So ALL the money made from the music needs to go back to them (the label) first. THEN it depends how much of a share the artist gets from the album sales (what uses to be sales anyway). So a cd or whatever maybe sold for $18 but the artist may only be entitled to like $1-2 per copy sold. It can get very complicated with publishing and songwriting royalties and mechanical royalties, etc, but the leading figure of “$20 MILLION” can be very misleadingz
@@DenzelHarrisonOfficial You don't understand. Number one record alone doesn't mean anything. If you have the number one record and own your own publishing then that's a big deal.
