A Picnic at PetworthPark

  • It's the time of the Deer Rut in Britain. A time when the energies of the wild are palpable and powerful. The Stags are loud and the Does are choosing this year's mate as the land slowly slides deeper into Autumn. Petworth Park is a National Trust House and Land open to the public, and boy is it public. But the place is full of wildlife all getting on with preparations for the dark seasons. The golden sunlight casts long shadows as the leaves turn a rainbow of colours before falling. Join us on a walk through the wild with the animals of myth and legend.

Thank you both for sharing this wonderful outing. Seeing Nature in her Autumn colours was so uplifting & the sight of the deer was magical. When I was quite young, over 50 years ago, I was travelling with mum, dad & my aunt from Aberfeldy in Perthshire to Kenmore, also Perthshire. The narrow country roads didn’t have very much traffic on them in those days & it was early afternoon at this time of year. The road we were on was bordered by woods on both sides & as we made our way along, all of a sudden a stag jumped out of the wood on the left, stopped, looked right at us ( dad had stopped the car) then leapt over a small dry stand dyke & disappeared into the wood to the right. It was such a magical sight & I’ve never forgotten it. Nowadays I’m lucky to live in a village in North East Scotland which has woods to the east & the west & I often see deer there, although no stags - yet! Samhain Blessings to both of you & Oscar.💚💚✌️✌️🍂🍁

Thank you both for sharing this special time with us! I must admit that the first time I heard Green and Grey I felt quite a range of emotions (in the positive range). My other half seems to connect with the horned deity archetype, especially Cernunnos. We watched a French documentary not long ago (I’m French 😁) about the king of the forest as we say, the stag. The film crew followed a group of stags for a year, it was fascinating to see their group dynamics throughout the year, up to rutting season where any sense of past camaraderie and friendship went out the window and it was pretty much «may the best stag win ». They captured the oldest stag being challenged by a new comer and being eventually dethroned. What followed was heartbreaking but also otherworldly for a lack of better word. He had been dealt a deadly blow by the young one, he walked to the nearest meadow, collapsed onto the ground just on the edge of the tree line. An owl appeared and perched on the nearest branch and a fox approached him at the same time and stood there. As if they had come to pay their final respect and say goodbye to their king. It was quite a moment to witness! I’ve been revisiting our ancient ancestors (les Gaulois) beliefs, most particularly Cernunnos. It’s also interesting to see Franco- Belgium TV show like Zone Blanche (Black Spot) exploring our ancient history and making Cernunnos a pivotal presence in the show. Not sure if you guys have seen it? It’s on Netflix I believe and subtitled as well as dubbed.

Another delightful video from you both. It's magical when a dragonfly alights on your hand... happened to me whilst sitting in a woodland clearing by Loch Faskally, near Pitlochry, Perthshire. The first time I heard a deer bark was on a dark night about 1am as I walked up the auld Drover's road which leads to Strathtay. Initially spooked me 'til I realised what it was. And on another occasion, I was fortunate to see a small herd of deer with a Stag as I returned home from a solitary Solstice ritual at Clachan an Diridh. Wonderful times!

Oh I loved this what a beautiful place. I'm surprised the deer are out with the dogs 🐕 around and the numbers of them. Here the fall is near its end we should have snow next week. The deer 🦌 here are much more skittish both from more predators & hunters. The best time to catch them is dusk and dawn. I love being out in the woods this time of year I saw a dragonfly today then I saw you had the video. Dragonflies are very close to my heart. Thank you so much for sharing 🐇🐇🐇❤

What a beautiful little adventure! I love that you can roam around with the deer. I haven't seen many deer this year but I was blessed to have two grey fox pups visit my backyard all Summer! We have Autumn happening here in Vermont and I have been spending a lot of time in the woods walking around the quarries. Lots and lots of Dragonflies near the quarry holes! Thank you both so much for this wonderful video! ♥🍂🍁

Ah Cerri, watching Damh try and fit you both into the shot, it made me think about how Tom Cruise must feel on set. I'm sure he has to stand on a box. You could stood in the trolley and have Oscar pull you along - that would have made great telly. That being said with the right angles Tom Cruise can convince us he's a 6' 5" Jack Reacher and Gandalf is twice the height of the hobbitses! Magic of the Movies eh! Thanks for another lovely trip out with you guys and hail to the Horned God. xx

Sadly, in the US, when I previously worked in horticulture, the white-tailed deer was and is considered a pest because they eat young trees and also are hit by cars at a disturbing rate. The local Parks Dept sponsored a culling hunt at a local park last year, and I prayed hard that the hunters would not harm any deer. I even did a little ritual.

It is a sad thing the plight of wildlife on our historical watch that's for sure. Humans need more compassion on all levels for the land and all life on it.

I always wanted to see the stags, and they're magnificent. The dragonfly on Cerri's hand, such a magical touch, and wonderful to behold. The trees hold such age and grace. Thank you for this window into your world as it means so much to see all of this. Many Blessings to you both.
