  • What lies beneath the surface of Petworth House and Garden in West Sussex? National Trust teams are working on an excavation to understand more about the history of the landscape. Petworth was once a pleasure garden, and experts are restoring the grounds to what it once would have looked like. As part of this 10-year project, historically-relevant plants are being re-introduced to the gardens.
In this video, discover what happens in an archaeological excavation. You’ll also learn about the involvement of volunteers and their importance to historic projects like these. Petworth has been with the National Trust for 75 years - the house was built in the 17th century, and the landscape is believed to date back to the Iron Age.
GIS (geographic information system) imagery is helping the team reveal the changes that the gardens have gone through over history. This has helped to map different time periods and might influence the way the grounds are represented to visitors.
Petworth is not only a site full of history but has also been used as the filming location for many films and TV shows. Mr. Turner (2014), Rebecca (2020) and series two of Bridgerton (2022) saw stars such as Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner) and Lily James (Rebecca) living at the house and grounds of Petworth as their respective characters. For Bridgerton, the extensive art collection and interior at Petworth were perfect for gallery scenes in the series.
