  • Richard Vobes is the Bald Explorer, dashing about Britain discovering the history of its towns and villages. In this episode her is off to Petworth in the heart of West Sussex, close to Chichester and not too far from London. It is a very rural town renown for the beautiful mansion house, upon which land once belong to the Roger de Montgomery and later the de Percy family.
It was the third Earl of Egremont who had a vested interested in the town of Petworth. He supplied the money to build the boys school, which was later destroyed by a stray German bomber during the second World War. It was the Earl who brought water from the near by Rover Rother into the town centre and who land it was the grim House of Correction was built for offenders from all over Sussex.
One of the prettiest streets can be found in Petworth, complete with old shop fronts and cobbles on the ground and the Bald Explorer reveals that he once lived there.
Back in the 19th century, many of the poor were assisted out of poverty and given the chance of a new life in Canada thanks to the local rector. Also, many do not realise that a special kind of stone, Petworth Marble was mined from this area and made into all sorts of wonderful objects.
Of course, most visitors , if not travelling to see Petworth House, go to hunt around the abundance of antique shops that flank the roads or take refreshment inside the independent tea rooms.

Spent my childhood in this town Richard. This was a beautiful little reminder of one of the most stunning jewels in Sussexs' crown. I have to say I was taken aback and left a little saddened by the story of the school children killed and found myself more than a little angry that it hasnt been deignated some sort of protected listed status or something similar. As for the failure of the locals and the combined wealthy estates encompasing Leconfield Cowdray and Eggremont to ensure the maintanance of the site.. Words fail me.. Clearly all the children of working people ! I suspect had the son of one of the towns dignitaries been killed in the same strike, this site would be a shrine and a beautifully maintained place of rest for these souls. Im minded to start a campaign ot get the graves some sort of status and funds raised to put it in order and keep it so.. Thanks for some memories and a short history lesson.

We are in the US, but we have truly fallen in love with your part of the world via youtube. Especially through Richards channel, and we are also saddened by the deaths of those children and the ruins of what should be kept as a monument for the lives lost. Yes, the townspeople should do something to preserve these precious markers! I realize that out of sight, out of mind sort of mentality, but really, your history there is amazing and I do hope that you or someone will do something to restore that graveyard. Best of luck!

Well Richard. I've just watched this for about the 3rd time...and I always spot something I missed last time around. It really is a masterpiece. The area is obviously very nice (except the new cop-shop) and for the most part it seems well cared for by the locals. You did an excellent job of the video and why these have never been picked up for national TV is beyond me. That said, as I haven't had a TV for 9 years, perhaps they have and I didn't see them. Really beautifully orchestrated scenes but, again, your sense of timing is first class.

Correction corn was not milled from Roman times
The first historical record attesting maize European introduction is that from the Caribbean by Colombus in Spain, 1493. From there, maize was rapidly brought to the Vatican [44] and the earliest European representations of maize are most likely those painted in frescoes near Rome dating from 1517

Living in a part of the world where the dead are almost revered and the sight of overgrown, un-maintained cemeteries is considered shocking; it's very hard to understand how even relatively small communities such as Petworth - where there clearly is a good degree of local pride; can allow them to become like the one you feature. On a mercifully smaller scale, the school tragedy you describe is the Sussex equivalent of Abefan or even Dunblane; and while the local scouts may keep the grave weeded and intact - where are the flowers? Where are the sisters and brothers, nephews and nieces of those innocent children, who would otherwise have devoted their lives to keeping their memories alive? Only, take yourself to the cemeteries of either of the places I mention - and doubtless many others; and there is a sense of community responsibility for the upkeep of such memorials - especially for those who have no living descendants. What adult offers his child a cup of squash and ignores the friend that accompanies him or her? I don't get that at all: it is clearly a town of some means. Surely it can afford some better, living memorial, such as a few rose bushes and other living flowers?
