Who had the best dish? 🔥
Do Malaysian mums do rendang it's going to cause a bomb!
@@shahesfelazi8549noted!
None. None of these women were Indonesian, were they? They used words like "belacan" and "gula melaka," which are Malaysian Malay terms, and no Indonesian would put shrimp paste and sweet soy sauce in a _rendang_ and we wouldn't make that kind of wet and sloppy _rendang_ either because we take traditions seriously.
@@KilanEatsandDrinks no Malaysian would put belacan in rendang .... That is not rendang. And I would agree most of the rendangs do not look like rendangs. Find Malaysians and Indonesians who can cook rendang. Come on, the Brits colonised Malaysia for so long, there are Malaysians in the UK who can cook a proper rendang. Please do us justice!
@@shahesfelazi8549 well that lady Jenny did indeed put shrimp paste in her so-called “rendang” and she was the one who said "belacan" and "gula melaka" so she is obviously Malaysian. Considering this is Buzzfeed UK, it actually makes sense that it is easier to find Malaysians there than Indonesians.
Shefali praises a dish and then rates it a 5 🤦♀️ Hazze says it’s ‘on the bad side’ then rates it a 6. Both need to be re-taught the grading system. 😑
It’s their choice!
Lol Ok chill, we know buzzfeed. It's still a weird choice. Can't we say that at all?? 😅 @buzzfeedUK
She was the one that said that having lemongrass was a good thing, but then she also criticised the dish for having too much lemongrass. She criticized the dish for having a gravy and then said she likes the idea of having sauce with it and it makes it not as dry, which I think is funny. She confuses me. Also, she doesn't seem to be able to correctly pronounce the name of the dish, which is rendang. She says Run Dang. That's just very British of her. 😂
@@buzzfeedUKtheir choice is wrong
Her: I want more lemongrass
Her again: Has too much lemongrass
Iconic
Every now and then they say “desecrated” coconut instead of “desiccated”. 🤣
The desecrated dessicated coconuts
Only Shefali says desecrated 🫣😄
@deendrew36 No, only Shafali says it that way.
And I am totally here for that! I am never saying it any other way. Shefali forever.
Came here just to see if anyone else noticed haha
"no complaints" about the dish. loves it. Rates it a 7... lmao what
The other lady said it was really good and then gave her a five
✨✨
How do you say so many nice things about someone's food and still rate them as low?
Is it a way to increase your chances of a higher score?
I agree it’s good but a 5? So someone is sabotaging
@@millerlena2208 Exactly! And here she is saying "desecrated" like she is so knowledgeable, to boot!
What else, talking about too tender but was complaining about previous one no being tender enough
that's typical Indo behaviour... they say one thing and do another....
@@CitizenCanindo behavior?
That jenny is malaysian.
And nonr of them actualy make good rendang.
Are the Indonesian moms here in the room with us? 😭 None of them sound like they're Indonesian based on the ingredients they used and the way they pronounce certain words (sounds more Malaysian)
Minangkabau here
My mother had taught me to make original rendang which is cooked on high heat until cooked, then left for 8 hours straight on very small heat while occasionally lift-stirring to avoid burning. The beef always turn out tender with lots of that beloved signature thick-moist coconut sauce which we lovingly call "dedak randang". Thanks for letting me share 💕
Justice for the 2nd dish. It doesn't deserve a 5. But I knew 3rd dish would win.
A win is a win
5!!! 5 after finding it nice! Nahhhh she deliberately scored her friend low
Or maybee not
Where do you guys found this so called “Indonesian moms”? 😢
They don't even pronounce the name of the dish correctly 💀🙄
Which Indonesian mom who says Rendang as "Randaaang" so awkward..🤣🤣
Actually in minang language it's RANDANG
I know the Minang people called it randang, but the way that first lady called randang is different with Minang people, it's more like bule things for me
I don't hate the moms but I truly doubt they're Indonesians.
Keturunan
Diaspora or heritage ?
Indonesian donr say gula malaka... They will say gula jawa... Defenetly
I'm glad Jenny won, especially since the one lady gave a low score that didn't match her words, at all. That said, I think it's a shame that Jenny has changed the way she prefers to cook/eat her rendang for others. Good episode.
One of the mums said gula Melaka are you sure she is Indonesian! Indonesians use gula Jawa ( Javanese sugar) not gula Melaka (malaccan sugar which is Malaysian). Shes also used belacan which is terasi in Indonesian, who uses belacan in rendang????!!!!!!! Jenny is a malaysian! I dont think she did a rendang looks like a curry. Whoever said they put desicated coconut in their rendang is out of their mind, caramelised coconut yes but not raw coconut shavings!
Definitely Malaysian
Ok la...at least Gula Jawa and Gula Melaka are both palm sugar. Should use the name Gula Aren......
Never heard gula jawa is used in rendang. Not in my mom's cooking or her relatives' cooking as well 😅
@@mirna.prasajacommon in Singapore & Malaysia. It’s just the style.
Q: "are you sure she is Indonesian!"
"Shes also used belacan which is terasi in Indonesian, who uses belacan in rendang????"
A: She is Chinese. Or let me say in Minang: Iko cino....
Someone who is from Padang which Rendang originates from.. I truly feel ashamed.. all 3 of them dishes you cannot even call them Rendang.. no one ever uses soya sauce, Terasi/Shrimp paste/belacan in their Rendang.. 🥲 these are such bad examples of such an amazing tasting Indonesian dish.. 😩
Please, tell us here how it should truly be prepared. I'm genuinely curious.
@@MississippiJapan
Rendang have 2 kind of spices, softened spices (with blender/food processor)
(garlic, shallot, turmeric, galangal, ginger, curly chili, large red chili, white pepper)
and whole spices
(bay leaf, lemongrass, galangal, galangal leaves, cinnamon, clove, lime leaves)
The steps:
Saute the softened spices until fragrant, then add whole spices until the unpleasant odor is gone, add beef (use topside) stir well and cook until the outer part of the beef turns brown and greasy. Add coconut milk and stir well. Add sugar, salt, msg, then simmer it in low heat until dry (need 7-8 hours and stirred over time)
There is 2 version of rendang:
true Rendang have dark brown color and dry texture.
Kalio, rendang that cooked faster so the coconut milk isn't evaporate wholly, the color is brown and have thick sauce
@@kaekaeoshi69 thank you for sharing!
The heavier lady I thought she was going to be really cool but she's trying to sabotage she knows damn well the other Lady's food taste way better😂
heavier lady 💀
@ventaliq I wasn't trying to be rude just couldn't think of her name
But that is the truth though @@ventaliq
"Desecrated coconut" 🤣🤣🤣
desecrated coconut 😫😫😫🥵🥵
😂
Three of them failed to make rendang.. Rendang not used soy sauce, shrimp paste even a sugar in it.. The sweet thing you taste only came from coconut milk and the meat inside.. The rendang should look lil bit dry not much water coz you should drying it to make it last longer.. And we not used pressure cooker to make it.. It should mix it with slow cooker techinque for almost 6-8 hours until it dry
shafali is indian/bangla , jenny is chinese , only hazze the only women who had indonesian character . hazze rendang better than others in term indonesian rendang authentic
Huh? That winning dish is definitely NOT _rendang_ c’mon! Why would _rendang_ have gravy and *shrimp paste* in it? 💀 Jenny said things like “belacan” and “gula melaka” so she’s definitely not Indonesian, because we would say “terasi” and “gula jawa” instead. But again, why would you put shrimp paste in a _rendang_ people? 😵💫
I can imagine all the Minangkabau cooks shaking with anger watching this. Also, we wouldn’t describe _rendang_ as a curry because we have a distinction when it comes to the two. They’re probably Malaysian or Singaporean seeing how they disrespect the dish. That explains the quality of their so-called _rendang_ because wannabes can never beat the real deal 🤭
I wonder if she’s Malaysian. She kind of sounds like she might be from the accent
@@jackyyu99 She is Chinese. Or let me say in Minang: Iko cino....
@@jackyyu99she definitely not Indonesian from how she call gula melaka and use desicated coconut.
And rendang with gravy is not rendang. But kalio.
I just dont like how she call her dish is traditional.
To be fair they're all using ginger and not galangal so none of these dishes really authentic. Also pretty sure none of them went through the process of making kerisik with the coconut
Do not bring msia into the conversation again, we don't wanna fight again over rendang or even trying claim nasi legal as yours
None of it looked like rendang. The first one had the closest look to a rendang. But the other two looked like just curry. The last one is definitely not a rendang.
Yup rendang is basicly name from the cokking proses.
I am so angry when she said her recipe is traditional. But dont know difference betwen kalio and rendang.
@@yogi_gs Yeah but like she said, she's been cooking the dish for British people who prefer it more saucy, so she probably knows but at this point when people ask for a rendang she probably just defaults to kalio because she knows that is what they will want more.
@@DeveusBelkan
Calling that traditional is what wrong.
And caling a calio rendang dont make it a rendang
Desecrated coconut 😂😂😂
Yall can't convince me that these "indonesian" mums are actually indonesians LMAO
i guess they’ve been UK-nized 😂
Indonesian mom? They cant even say “Rendang” correctly… are they really know how the real Rendang actually taste? 😂
I live in Malaysia and each rendang I have it always different. So many family and warung recipes, all unique
That's because they're some kind of loose interpretations of rendang. The original rendang from Padang tends to be quite uniform. When I went to Singapore or Malaysia I thought their rendang doesn't really taste like rendang.
yeah just like how the world make their own kind of pizza but the original pizza from Italy is the standard ,the OG
Thanks for sharing!
with little bite acid mister, its to be good.
I've been waiting for this
Indonesia people trying others' food
The one that won was the one that looked least like an authentic randang.
Hmmm
How can you overcook reading? It's supposed to be overcook it, you cook it over 4 hours ofcourse it's overcooked! The word rendang means to cook something for a long time by stirring.
When the third mum refers the shrimp paste as Belacan, I highly doubt that she’s actually from Malaysia
They’re supposed to be from Indonesia and not Malaysia..
@@siriussemajo9699 Indonesian called shrimp paste "Terasi" while Malaysian called it "Belacan". Plus, her accents sounded more like Malaysian. The way she pronounced "santan" for an example was somehow distinctly sounds Malaysian.
She's Malaysian
As a Malay from SE Asia, all the rendang look terrible.
This one was weird...They referring to ginger while really any rendang should use galangal. Sort of also confused in that it seems none of them actually made kerisik with the coconut?? I'm white and make a much better rendang...The lack of kefir lime leaf's also quite weird.
are you sure they’re indonesians? the way none of them pronounced “rendang” properly 😂
They cook it so well and look very delicious, rendang is my favorite food ever ❤❤
I think some of them are Malaysian because Indonesian never said gula malaka
I need a Turkish mums try each others food edition! suggestions: kisir, manti, menemen!
Fantastic love from Nigeria 🇳🇬 I love this video
Awesome! Thank you!
Rendang is supposed to be a "dry" curry and not have gravy/sauce. It can also be anywhere from very mild to spicy based on preference.
crunchy rendang??? 😮 soy sauce??? belacan??? overcook??? whattt.. all these comment is just wrong
Nah, mom's the best. 'Nuff said, fragrant, berlemak, manis and comforting because it tastes like home.
I don't usually see much dried spice in rendang, cinnamon at most but usually fresh aromatics like galangal, daun kencur, daun limau, ginger, shallots.
Shafali's rendang recipe seems interesting, not my go to, but interesting, she also has a misunderstanding of what rendang is, there's multiple ways to approach rendang and can be either basah or kering, not necessarily dry dry. Typically it's cooked dry because it's meant to be keep for longer in days past but there are wetter versions of rendang based on where the recipe has travelled to within the Indo-Malay region, but not wet like Jenny's, never seen a rendang that wet either.
Also, no fresh grated coconut! Only caramelised desiccated coconut, aka kerisik! You want your rendang to spoil fast you put your grated coconut, otherwise, no.
I liked Jenny's Rendang... I am thinking she might have Nonya heritage... it is funny to see so much sauce, but, each country does their own thing lah! :)
Are some of them actually Indonesians though? 😅
Rin-Dung aka Rendang Is meant to be ‘dry’ with no sauce as such! Man, this is a tad bit shameful for Indonesians far and wide tbh. It was actually cringe worthy 🫣😖 plus ladies… where is the rice!? 😭😢 how sad and disappointing, I’ve always wanted an Indonesian episode. Btw, Rendang does not have Star anise, cinnamon nor soy sauce as a flavour profile!? What is wrong with this video 😩 I highly doubt that what any of them made was Rendang!? Have they actually tasted authentic Indonesian food?
"Desecrated" coconut 😂😂😂
Buzzfeed ga nemu talent orang indonesia jadi orang malaysia atau singapura yang dipakai. Dari logat juga ngga ada yang menunjukkan kalo salah satu dari mereka orang indonesia. Jenny, Shafali, Hazze? Mana ada orang indo pakai nama itu?
I'm happy with who won
Great 👍
I doubt they are indonesian when jenny said "gula melaka" Instead of "gula merah" or "gula jawa" And "sun-tan" 😂
Yall should do a surprise hidden guest someone who is not of the culture or familiar with these dishes cook some of these meals.
Just from like recipes to be judged. It would be interesting to see if they would find the dishes just as good or better when cooked by someone who can maybe cook , but just hasn't cooked these dishes before.
Never had this dish, i will try it. Can this dish made with fish or chicken?
The ladies were fair with their scores
Thanks kindly ladies i will tried this with oxtail and make coconut cilantro rice.
Thanks. Keep posting more mum's trying each other dishes. ❤
Thanks! More to come 🎉
I like to make it with bird meat
Rendang is basicly name of coking procces but dont use those 3 ladies recipe.
Usually Rendang use topside because rendang needs to be cooked for 6 hours or more, until the coconut milk evaporate.
And the top side is the only part of the beef that is good for slow cook
❤ These are my favorite videos! Please make more could watch these every week! Just not enough of them! ❤
Thank you! 🎉
Hoo chile, Buzzfeed, you're getting read for filth in this one.
Next videos: 4 Luxembourgers rating each others' Bouneschlupp (green bean soup).
No soya sauce and fermented shrimp in rendang please 🙏🏽
I love asian meals.
Same!
These ladies might be able to fool the brits.... but not real minang people. Rendang is supposed to be dry, because it is a method of preservation.. What Jenny and Hazze serve is not rendang, but Hazze served Kalio, perhaps.... Jenny's looks like it is still at the gulai stage... If it's wet like that, it won't keep.
Uncle Roger should rost this video
"RENDAAANG" eek 😬
Rendang without desicrated coconut us not rendang. It is just a type of curry
R they more malaysian than indonesia?
Tasting show for Indonesian rendang but using shrimp paste for rendang.... Indonesian rendang doesn't even use that ingredient 😢 the last rendang looks more like Kalio or Gulai than Rendang.
What do you mean with overcooked? Rendang is an overcooked dish obviously.
Are all of these mom really an indonesian??
i want Jenny to come to my home and make me some rendang!!!!!
Yeah !
@@buzzfeedUK I want @buzzfeedUK to make rendang for me.
As some one from rendang originalu came from ill tell you her dish is not rendang.
Shafali is Indonesian?
I think second gen Indonesian descend,.her way of pronounce rendang is so weird and awkward, like westerner did,.
....are you *actually* sure you that these are Indonesian rendang, or are these more of a presentation of these mums' iteration of a supposed Indonesian rendang?
Go on and grill me to death in the comments below 👇🏼
is there a vegan/vegetarian version of this
👀
I’ve seen mushroom rendang though
You can if you whan.
you could use unripe jackfruit cut into chunks
@@xaverawilligendael5249 thanks
I really dont like the negative vibe shefali is bringing to this episode. While the others were positive
The last one is not rendang. No belacan ni shrimp paste
shefali pronouncing rendang wrong is so funny
Gula malaka??? Shes not indonesian...for sure
They cheated the Second Lady
Adults, but look like children, wanna win use low rates by their opponents, omg, and they are mums
I think Phopho Jenny is cute and her curry is nice, but that is not rendang whatsoever . Rendang means dry, so juicy rendang is an oxymoron, just like juicy jerky...
Juicy rendang called kalio.
So yeah its not rendang.
Jenny's "rendang" looks like gulai to me 💀💀💀
The comments will be bombarded by Indonesians trying to explain the contents of the video when no one asked. Just wait.
Jenny pronounces Rendang and the name of the ingredients so well in Bahasa. Love it!
Good to know!
“Bahasa” means “Language“. It doesn’t mean Indonesian .
English = Bahasa Inggris
Japanese = Bahasa Jepang
Italian = Bahasa Italia
Vietnamese = Bahasa Vietnam
Indonesian = Bahasa Indonesia
and so on.
Every single “language” on the whole multiverse is literally “bahasa”. Even ones spoken by aliens or animals.
Do a Malaysian mum's do rendang next plsssss!!!!
Jenny is literally in this video....
@@rahmanzahari6855 yeah that's one Malaysian
