- A massive earthquake slammed Japan with a preliminary magnitude of a 7.6, according to authorities. Sone residents are being told to evacuate after thousands of homes lost power. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings for the coastal area of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida warned residents to prepare by saying 'residents need to stay on alert for further possible quakes, and I urge people in area where tsunamis are expected to evacuate as soon as possible."

7.6 is a fairly mild earthquake, in Japan especially. The earthquake scale is exponential. For instance the earthquake in 2011 was a 9.1 which doesn't sound much worse until you realize that made it 15 times more powerful. Anything under 8.0 is going to produce a negligible tsunami. It is getting to the point at over 7.0 where it will cause property damage (obviously) but usually the tsunamis are under 1-2 meters which outside some very unique places wouldn't cause much damage. The Japaneses gov't warned the costal regions because they worried about a larger aftershock. Better safe then sorry.

Anything less than 8.0 really isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things. Japan is used to the measly 7 point something earthquakes.

Ever notice how these earth quakes happen around the end of the year… around the shortest day for us… and longest day in the southern hemisphere.
Kinda makes sense, right? Change of season, expansion and contraction with that deep ocean moving warmer current near a brittle rock island suddenly cold at the top with unstable plates nearby. The Japanese people are brilliant and will adapt as best they can, but it's a reminder of population density and its risks everywhere.

Her report was good except I think she misspoke or made a mistake on that "4 feet" I believe it should have been *4 METERS* because in other videos I've seen so far today, they referred to possible or actual waves hitting of "3 to 5 METERS" (or higher). Plus, I think that maybe Japan uses the Meteric System of measurement, not the feet and inches etc that the USA does [sometimes called the Standard American English (SAE) System].
