Every year we try to visit my Japanese wife’s parents house on New Year's Eve so we can spend New Year’s dinner together. It’s kind become a family tradition for us here in Japan. This New Year we have grandpa and grandma as well as Maiko's sister and her husband. It was a great to spend time together but on New Year's day, we had an scary earthquake in Japan in the Ishikawa prefecture which we also felt in Aichi. We hope that all the people affected during the earthquake are safe. If you do want to help support the people, I've left links below.

Click bait title or what!! Unbelievable!! Not even the leaf on the plant is moving. Talk about a staged scene! Anyone who hasn't watched the video, there is no actual earthquake. It's completely staged. As you see, not one thing is moving. Who would terrorize their child like that?

When my grandpa died and Granny became too old to stay by herself in the village we moved her into a small apartment close to us. Loved having her within walking distance and you could tell it was good for her as well to see us that often but also have stuff like stores and doctors within walking distance as well.

I think that most people may fail to grasp is just how amazing it is for the family to allow the filming to happen. This is insanely private, and it’s a privilege to be allowed to see a real slice of Japanese life at an important part of the year. Also, super scary to be caught in an earthquake. Fun fact, Astoria Queens just had a small earthquake a few weeks ago. Very odd. Buildings certainly are not built for that in that part of the world.

Oh man, when Wolfy pointed at the TV and said he recognized that as where you guys live, and his emotional tone while saying so, it made me tear up. I'm happy Wolfy listened to you and that you thanked him for doing so!
I hope you and your family and friends are doing better now and that you all have been able to relax and find peace after this incident.

Glad you guys are OK! One of my friends lives outside of Kyoto and she had gone to Aichi to visit her family for New Years as well. I messaged her immediately and she said they were OK. She called me at 2 am (I work overnight and was off that night) and we talked about two hours. I donated too to the Japanese Red Cross. My heart goes out to everyone and their loved ones in Japan. Love from Texas in the United States.
For those unaware: there were 8582 aftershocks with the largest at 6.1 or 6.2. As of right now 221 are dead, 1220 fatalities, and 24 missing. Huge prayers go out to the people of Japan and condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.
Edit: 281 deaths and 1300 were injured across six prefectures. It's the deadliest Earthquake since 2011 Tohoku Earthquake.

Hey Paolo, i was in Kanazawa, visiting from Australia when the earthquake occurred. The most terrifying experience I’ve had made so much better by the incredible hotel staff who were so lovely, helpful and reassuring. It was interesting to see how others nearby areas were affected and when i saw where you were in relation to me, surprised at how strong it was down south. My thoughts with the families still recovering and the 5 people that died at Haneda, on their way to deliver supplies. Beside all of this, Japan remains one of the most amazing country’s and can’t wait for my next visit back.

Wait, wait, how is it possible that a room full of adults that grew up in Japan didn't know what to do when they received the earthquake warning?? 🤔 Future video idea: earthquake preparedness. 🤠

I think part of it is because they have not been in an earthquake that lasted that long. Just like California, Japan gets small earthquakes all the time. Even us in California don’t usually do anything because we are used to the earthquake mildly shaking but only lasting for a few seconds. The earthquake is over by the time you take precautions. You saw as the earthquake was longer than usual they got under the table. I know it might not sound smart not to do anything right away but when you’re use to small earthquakes pretty often you don’t act quickly or at all. Anyways, Happy New Year to you 🙏

At social gatherings it is fun to socialise with other women. Preparing food together is a bonding experience and multigenerational. I am not a good cook but enjoy working with family and friends for a family function.

We were in Chiba at the time of the earthquake while visiting family. Fortunately we didn’t feel the quake but were horrified by what was going on, on the other coast. We come from New Zealand where earthquakes are common as in Japan. We are taught from an early age to ‘drop, cover, hold’ so get down, under something solid and hold on until the shaking stops.

I was in California years ago for work . Something woke me up around 5 am . I sat up and the bed shimmy across the floor with me in it. The bed moved about 6 feet! I live near Vancouver BC and we are on The ring of fire like Japan. They say we are overdue for a big earthquake. It’s definitely scary. Glad you and your family are ok.
