Absolutely, this is the best rendition on the internet. You channel and express so much emotion it is hard to keep back the tears from pouring down my face. Amazing! The only person I've heard who comes close is Nelson Friere. Amazing.
You play Widmung beautifully! It is my all time favorite classical piece. I am an intermediate pianist and to play this is my goal. I love this video and so happy I just came across it today. Because of your insight of this piece and wonderful input, I have subscribed to your channel. Thank you so much. From Arizona USA.
@@charlottehupianist You are so sweet to reply to my message. I look forward to performance tips videos soon and again thank you for making videos. I struggle with learning piano, my fingers just get in the way!!
Dear Ching-Yun, from Franz Liszt's native country, Burgenland in Austria, a big thank you for your beautiful performance and explanation of this transcription of Schumann's 'Widmung'. Very inspiring. And yes, it is important to understand the lyrics and to sing along in your heart from the tenderness and passion ... as I feel when I try to play this on my piano. Warm regards from Süd Burgenland, Paul Manche
You brought chills down my back at many places in your interpretation, and of course, especially in the calm melodic parts, tears to my eyes. I think I would much prefer Schumann's original as Liszt gets carried away in many of his transcriptions. I would prefer to hear you play this simply in a straight-forward way without the crashing arpeggios and chords that Liszt preferred. However, THIS piece is now among my favorites of all time! Thank you!
Thank you, I agree with you re the music. It is the only piece of Liszt I actually managed to play reasonably well, back in the day-way back! The lesson was well devised.
Thank you so much for this video. It is so helpful. One question. In the transcription I have by Liszt there is what seems to be an added vocal part above the piano. This part has the left and right hand notes. During the virtuoso part above the piano part, there is another voice which has sets of three 6 eight notes, with one note per hand. Should this part be played as well? Here is the transcription. It is easier if you just look at it to see the part I am talking about. www.free-scores.com/PDF_EN/schumann-robert-widmung-77677.pdf
Thank you for your comment! You see this often in Liszt's scores. There are two options for the performer. Usually the one version above is more virtuosic. It is up to you to choose the version you perform. Hope this helps!
I appreciate your insightful analysis. The one glitch is that the recording of the piano playing is much louder then your voice speaking and I had to make repeated volume adjustments to understand you.
this piece by Robert Schumann just makes me cry..... I have always felt that Robert would have never played the end loudly like so many do, but now after hearing your description that Schumann would have ended it very peacefully I said to myself YES! I think so too,... Yundi Li really presents this piece how Robert would have wanted it played. At least I think so... but not the live version uploaded by Rodney2Marsch, that version is terrible, and ballistic fast and full of mistakes. I think Yundi's best performance of this piece is here: ruclips.net/video/jDWeTO3tBNI/видео.html .............. Thank you Ching-Yun hu!
A very interesting comparison of Schumann's original versus Liszt's pianistic interpretation. Thank you. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much I am starting to learn this piece, and appreciate your help and advice. Beautifully played.

Try to study Clara Schumann's transcription. You can learn this version if you are not that advanced. Leave Franz List version for concert pianists.

Exactly. Interestingly enough, Martha Argerich (for example) plays the less virtuosic accompaniment before the climax. It’s a matter of choice.
Liszt wrote the lyrics when he made this arrangement.
