I know…I was delighted when I found it because I never liked Liszts and I just played from the original voice/piano score. It made me happy to find Clara’s 💜
What an interesting and beautifully made video - this was fascinating and loved the cats too!! Totally with you. I'm never one for pyrotechnics and the Clara version is sublime 🧡❤️ Thanks for this one - really enjoyed it the expansion of knowledge, lovely playing and film except 🙃💖🧡
Brilliant tutorial Louise, you make a very strong case for Clara’s transcription and without doubt I agree with you! 💕🎹💕Loved the sense of humour you injected into this video 🤣
Perspective is a beautiful thing and respect and appreciate yours. Learned a lot from this video and appreciate how much you put into a piece. It absolutely shows in your performances. You have a fan in me, Louise. Your playing is just gorgeous 🤗❤️🙌🎹💯💥

It's very interesting to hear your thoughts about these 2 different transcriptions of 'Widmung'. I have to agree with you that Schumann's version sounds more heavenly and her version seems to express love and affection in a tender way. Liszt's version, on the other hand, sounds more intense and passionate, but it doesn't seem to represent love and affection in the same way. Perhaps Liszt was trying to express love and affection in an intense way. Well, I guess both of them have different interpretations and perspectives on the same song. Great review on both transcriptions, Louise!
Very nicely said Ron…I think you hit the nail on the head. And what ‘speaks’ to one person might not ‘speak to another. So Schumann’s original song can reach more people through the piano. 💜
I genuinely like both pieces for very different reasons. The Liszt version is a very 'showy' version which, if you didn't know the story behind the music is an amazing piece - a real tour de force! However, now that I know the story behind the music - the tender love story that is played out between Clara and Robert in Clara's transcription is so much more subtle and gentle. Thank you for telling me their story. XXXXX
Louise, I like Clara's version best. I really enjoyed seeing the clip of Katharine Hepburn because she and I used to exchange notes at Christmas time and her Birthday. At the time, I was unaware that she rarely gave out autographs, but I still have her notes in a scrap book. Beautiful song and beautiful ladies.
My dear! Well, certainly Liszt's version is more intense, stronger, more passionate, perhaps more modern, in a way. Schumann's is more intimate, deeper, less overwhelming but more enveloping for me. But maybe both are the face of a same coin. The love! Love for music and love for another human being. But, sweetie, thank you for these chats that make us understand even more what is behind these wonderful works that will still enchant us today and forever. You also express the love you have for music with words and with your enthusiasm. Love ... in fact !! My biggest embrace and lots of love from Milan to Harrogate !! Renata
Very interesting to discover Clara's arrangement, more basic but more intimate, but I wouldn't say Liszt just turned it into a showpiece. For me those pyrotechnics strengthen a climax, create more intense feelings and passion, so maybe Liszt transforms it into a more passionate kind of love, which may or may not fit the lyrics. That and it creates a thicker and more symphonic feel, which I love hearing in a piano piece. Call me shallow, but I prefer the Liszt just for its fun factor and intensity, even if it's less close to the original. I think Liszt hits the sweet spot between flashy and musical, and I say this about his works in general. Still, Clara's is worth listening to for sure. Really depends what you wanna go for.
It is interesting isn’t it! I’d never call you shallow🤦♀️😂 and I definitely agree about Liszt intensifying the feelings/climax. I’m just such a purist on this lied and we definitely need someone in Liszt’s corner. Thanks for listening and for your contribution! Happy Sunday💜
I agree, I much preferred Clara Schumann's transcription. I must admit I'm not a fan of Liszt. I studied him at University and it's just so over the top and aggressive. Technique over musicality. I much prefer Claras! 🙏Thank you so much for this interesting comparison! A really fascinating and entertaining video! Truly wonderful! 🤗❤️✨👌💐
I like this sort of comparison video. Yeah, Liszt generally is very bombastic and a huge showoff. It is nice to know there is a more pure and sentimental transcription out there. (:
I agree with you: Clara would have the better version since she was the adored wife and love of Robert's life and understood where he was coming from. Notes from the heart as opposed to Liszt showy version. Love that look from Brahms (secretly in love) in the Hepburn film clip there at the end. Great thoughts and thanks for sharing your thoughts on the "Widmung"! I am a huge fan of Clara Schumann so Liszt doesn't stand a chance!
