I love that Harlan's immediate reaction isn't to start panicing, but rather write it down in his journal for an efective killing method in his next book!
And he called that they were switched too without even knowing it.
Lol
@@charlesliu6580 yooooooo!!
i feel like this was the one of loopholes tho. that note he took just before he died could hv been found as an evidence or smth
Now, that's a man who loves his work lol
He’s content with himself because he knows he’s left everything to Marta by now, she’s probably the only one who cared for him because he was her friend, rather than for his money, like his whole family.
Exactly
Idk I mean she was paid to be his friend/nurse so I bet if he stopped paying her she wouldn't want to be his friend for long correct me if I'm wrong please
@@RobinAlbatroz Well, throughout the movie it's shown that she's the only one that was really sad about his death, and the rest were just there for the money, so she did care about him. For instance, even though it's not her job she listened to his issues and they talked about what they did that day, and basically gossiped with each other.
@@DeepFriedFrenz112 that is a good point so I concede
Also I’m pretty sure it’s mentioned Marta extended her hours to spend more time with Harlan because she realised he needed a friend

I’ll be taking that idea thank you
A writer through and through. Can totally imagine him as a younger man in the attic of a modest house, nothing but him, a typewriter, and a cup of coffee, writing the beginnings of what will become a long and successful career as a novelist.

She is a incredible actress, the way she can fake cry like that and express the panic makes it look easy

2:22 is a gut punch. Harlan isn't afraid of death but he thinks he'll live because Marta keeps the antidote on her. Then the realization he's about to die comes and he looks scared for a moment, but he's more sad for Marta than anything
The second she said that, I even felt scared
He also knows that something else must be up and Marta is telling the truth because she is not throwing up.
such an amazing actor, and she too
he was about to burst out crying because she was acting like a daughter not a nurse.
Plummer was a heavy hitter
As a nurse, this scene gets to me. One of the worst nightmares for nurses is to accidentally give a wrong medication to patients.
Yeah.........😑.
Yes I agree. It must be an unbelievably stressful feeling. What I do like about this scene though is how Harlan just gives Marta a compassionate look as she's panicking of "it was just a terrible mistake" because he has such a good bond with her. It's an endearing and well acted scene.
As an AEMT her med math is wrong to begin with lol
To be a doctor or nurse, is the toughest job.
Same. Terrifying. Absolutely the biggest fear
I think this movie did a good job making Marta very sympathetic and easy to root for
it would be a bigger twist if she was the real killer

Gaganpreet Singh He didn’t consider it. He even said “there are some things I’m forgetting, I’m sure of it” when telling her his plan. He was about to die, so I’m sure his mind was a little frantic

Cannot watch the scene without laughing at that. Funniest part in the film apart from the knife scene.
It breaks my heart seeing Marta crying like that. She really thought it was her fault 💔
It still was her fault.. partially. When the nursing board investigates this, they will ask about how she stored and organized the meds and if she double checked labels as well as why the emergency kit wasn't available. Its really serious business.
But the labelers of the medication would be partially at fault for not more clearly marking the medications.
@@baloog8 There might be some context you're missing for the reasoning all that happened...
@@Erutan409 yes sir/mamm. I didn't watch the film and just read a lot of comments. Probably some nuances not really discussed. Thanks
@@baloog8 The killer swapped the labels of the medication and stole the emergency kit that night. The saddest part is that we later find out she was used to the different weights of the medication, and gave him the right one without looking. She never gave him any morphine at all. In hindsight she should’ve gotten in trouble for not reading the labels, but had he let her call an ambulance he would’ve lived because regardless she gave him the right medication.
1>She told Harlan he would have overdose symptoms after 5minutes, yet she failed to look for his missing symptoms after 5minutes passed.
2>She let a drugged man unnecessarily commit suicide whereas if she followed protocol he would still be alive.
At best, she was a bad nurse. At worst, she cut his throat and fabricated an outrageous alibi that detectives oddly just blindly believed despite seeing the victim's blood on her. I would wager there are more people who can puke on command (especially since that is possible to learn) than there are of people who have a "puke if you lie" ailment.
The sad part is, she actually injected the right one, and he was perfectly fine. Big twists in this movie
Funny the investigators never focused on the note in his diary. But, after the medical report it wouldn't have mattered. But they could have teased the audience with a conversation about the note.

"If someone switched the meds on purpose..." Nice foreshadowing there.
I thought it was just the movie telling us it wasn't an accident, im geniunly surprised that there were people who thought it was an accident
@@LeonardoHernandez-eg5dv My thoughts were "she messed up, but its clear someone took out the antidote." First viewing I heard "i know it's there because it comes with the kit" My pea brain didn't put together though that the killer couldn't assume Marta would screw up the meds so they'd need to ensure she messed up, however
Harlan’s dead was so heartbreaking. He had a good heart and only wanted the best for his family, however, they were too blind to realice it and basically lost their humanity. He deserved to be loved and protected, yet they only cared about money. So sad that Marta was the only one who appreciated him enough. 💔

I actually cried when she cried in panic! What an excellent acting!!
Good acting by Ana
I always regretted that he died instead of calling the ambulance. But watching this scene again I realized that he must have known that she would not get the inheritance if he died because of her so he immediately made a plan.
Ooh! A very sharp observation!
Yeah. He didnt want any of his fortune going to his family, but her mistake punched a hole in his idea, so he had to quickly make up a plan
I swear to God, Marta is the definition of “character who needs the biggest hug”
He literally solves half of his murder in less than 3 minutes😂😂😂

"Excuse me, but what is the 'good stuff's' dosage supposed to be?"
"3mg!"
"Oh that's QUITE a bit less. ... You know, this is an interesting and efficient method of murder. I need to write this down." Hahahahaha
The med math was technically wrong, the morphine vial says it was 5mg per ML . Meaning too over dose him 100mg she would of had to give him 20ml of the medication wich is multiple vials full
@@luciuscroy6656 plus, if she had been giving him regular doses of 100 mg ketorolac, his kidneys would have been burned out a long time ago.
Harlan's death could occur in 10 minutes, yet for some reason he doesn't show significant pain or symptoms.
It's a subtle hint that Marta already injected the right medications.
Yep! When my mom (a nurse) first watched it, she thought it was a Hollywood-doesn't-know-anything-about-medicine type thing since he didn't exhibit symptoms. And then later on...
Wait so she doesn't accidentally kill him? I watch the movie and forget it. So why he died , did ransom do it?
@@LaRomaBella he literally starts walking around, writes down things and plots great intrigue xD this is SO stupid I just cannot... As an addict I cannot imagine someone taking 100mg morphine shot (he is an old man an his tolerance is very low - she said his normal dose would be about 3mg) and acting like this man. She is nurse and she doesn't realize he lacks any OD symptoms?
@@whydoimevenhere Harlan assumes he's about to die, and is concerned that if Marta is blamed for his death, her undocumented immigrant mother will be deported. (Possibly also that she won't inherit his estate as he intends, but the audience and Marta don't know that at this point.) So he urges her to cover her tracks so she won't be suspected and when she's hesitant he slits his own throat to leave her no reason to "waste" time trying to save him. (And possibly also to make it less likely there will be an autopsy that will find the overdose, though I'm not sure about that.)
Ransom switched the labels on the medication vials hoping Marta would kill Harlan, but she still gave him the correct medication instinctually. The two liquids have different densities and she could tell them apart by touch. It is a little hard to believe she didn't say "Wait, it's been 5 minutes and you don't have any symptoms of an OD..." but I guess she wasn't thinking clearly. 😕
@@radoslew she wasn’t thinking clearly, she was panicking
This is more heartbreaking after hearing Christopher Plummer passed away.
Its such a touching moment when he leans over and pushes the phone receiver stopping the call. No anger, no fear, just acceptance that his friend is now in trouble and he needs to help her.
There's a line from Walt's interview that the plots of his books appear in his head within minutes. And when Harlan gets the realization that he may die, an elaborate and complex way of not implicating Marta in his death pops in his head within a very short time frame. It's such a brilliant way of character setup and eventual payoff that if you pay close attention, is rewarding. I love details like this.
2:29 his expression shows he was more worried for Marta than himself, he didn’t want to see her panic or lose the inheritance
I felt in love with Ana De Armas with this movie

I love looking back how many clues are in this entire scene. Such an underrated film. And Ana De Armas is amazing, Ben Affleck is one lucky guy!
Ben Affleck?? He’s with Jennifer Lopez you clod! Why lie so much?? It doesn’t make sense you don’t need to lie! Everyone knows he’s with Jennifer Lopez shut up!

Watching this movie for the five or sixth time and absolutely weeping during this scene. These two were best friends and Marta is shattered. Truly a tragedy. The whole movie is so funny and it keeps a perfect tone the whole time. Amazing
Really you watched if for six tym or five ?
@@itsbonkerjojo9028 yah I truly enjoy things and rewatch them
This scene pains me knowing that he was perfectly fine the whole time
i like how he’s so calm about everything and like, “i have to write this diwn.”
I really started tearing up at this scene. Marta frantically trying to find the emergency kit and them both realizing the hopelessness of the situation. It really hurt to see them realize that these are the last few minutes Harlan was going to live. I can't imagine how a situation like this would feel in real life.
I've watched this movie 4 times now. Each time I've rewatched this movie I've picked up on new Easter Eggs, foreshadowing, etc. If you pay attention to details the movie can be quite revealing. Which I really love!
For example, Richard actually exposes himself cheating on his wife by throwing the baseball out the window when looking for the hidden letter that Harlan wrote. Next, later on, as Blanc and Marta are combing the mansion for clues he throws the baseball for the dogs in the yard but instead, they return the broken lattice, leaving the baseball out in the yard. Finally, near the end of the movie we see Linda returning the recovered baseball to her late father's study. There she finds the letter open and thus revealing Richard being a cheater. Full circle. Like a donut hole within a donut...
Also, when Ransom is first revealed to us the dogs are barking at him and jumping on him like crazy. The same testimony we are told that when the dogs were heard barking late at night from when he came back to mess with the medicine bag.
Finally, you can also see the painting of Harlan change from having a stoic/concerned look (when Marta is looking at it before her interview with Blanc), and then when the mystery is solved at the end of the movie we can see Harlan smirking/smiling.
These are just some of my favorite ones that I noticed! Others include the foreshadowing of the stage prop knife from Harlan and then Ransom stabbing Marta with a "stage prop" knife and the family getting Marta's nationality wrong every time they mention where she is from.
I believe this movie was wonderfully written and shot. I can't wait for the second one to come out!
Oh yeah, the nationality issue. Someone says she’s from Ecuador, someone says Uruguay, Paraguay and Ransom called her Brazilian. You call her “family” but still didn’t bother to learn which country she cane from?
Wow, these are great observations!
Yep
i noticed that they always got her nationality wrong haha
Them mentioning her nationality made me question what even was her nationality to begin with lmao
Ugh I really wanted him to be alive in the end. When I heard the name of his publishing company was “Blood into Wine” and he said the thing about the prop knife I thought that he faked his death.
I really enjoyed his character so endearing just a man and his legacy and fortune with one friend and a bad family. Heartbreaking his death was.
Alexa Swantek, same. I thought it was going to be revealed he was alive.
O
Part of me is scared about getting old but then I watch Christopher Plummer in roles like this and I feel a little better. Legend
He is inspiring! forever young in many ways! Heartbreaking he died from an accident, but then he was still in his prime to the end.
The way Harlan foreshadows not fearing death, then, true to his word, is told he has less than 10 minutes to live and calmly comes up with a way to save Marta because he knows she’s about to be rich AF. Legend
2:51 The click of the telephone being ended by Harlan and Ana's (de Armas) acting through her eyes was so well done 💛 That's what you call subtle acting 😎
1:25 Oh well, no pressure.
Lol this character is so likable.
This part had me crying the first time I watched it. Her panic and guilt and helplessness was so heartbreaking

With the sudden passing of Christopher Plummer, I now cherish the first time I saw this film in theaters a year ago even more. I geuss that's the beauty of cinema where watching an actors final or one of they're final performances is like watching them taking a final bow.
Rip Christopher Plummer, amazing actor!
If they had a waited a little longer, they probably would've realised "Hey, there's no symptoms. He's alright. Maybe go to the doctor to be sure" then they go to the doctor and then it's all fine.

I ADORE her hair here. The braid crown just fits her perfectly.
If harlan had listened to her hed be alive cuz she didnt make mistake
He cared more about making certain his inheritance did NOT go to his dirtbag relatives than he did living a little bit longer.
But he ain't taking that risk, NO one of both of them knew that it was a false alarm, so if Harlan died, they would be suspicious of how he died, then they'd check his tox report and blame the nurse
@@amadeus5182 I mean even if she called the ambulance the tox report would show that she was the killer. The decision of Harlan to not call an ambulance is kinda stupid when you think about it. Even if she didn't call the ambulance, the tox report would say everything, she was screwed anyway. If harlan made the logical decision he would still be alive
@@LeonardoHernandez-eg5dv your comment makes a lot of sense, but i think its been said in the movie that the tox results woudnt have been done, if there wes no suspicion. If the original cops looked at the case without the presence of blanc, they would have had no reason to do a tox test.

The saddest part is that he killed himself to save her but the meds were switched in the bottle so she gave him the right meds. The only ones who were respectable in that family was harlan, his mom, and the Mother whose husband was cheating on. The more you watched this movie the more you hated every single one of them.
