NAACP SUES Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves For 'Separate But Unequal Policing' | Roland Martin

  • The NAACP is suing Mississippi's governor and other officials over a new law that expands the jurisdiction of the state-run Capitol Police in Jackson, Mississippi, and creates a temporary court within a Capitol Complex Improvement District covering a portion of Jackson.
The NAACP says the law will create separate and unequal policing in the majority-Black capital and violate the principle of self-government by taking control of the police and some courts out of the hands of residents. The new law allows people convicted in the Capitol Complex Improvement District Court to be put in a state prison rather than in a city or county jail, and the judge of the new court is not required to live in Jackson and will be appointed by the Mississippi Supreme Court chief justice.
A majority-white and Republican-controlled state House and Senate passed the legislation. Democrats govern Jackson, and about 83% of residents are Black, the most significant percentage of any major U.S. city. The governor has faced criticism for his handling of crime in the city, which has had more than 100 homicides in each of the past three years.
The NAACP's lawsuit seeks to block the law that violates the Voting Rights Act and the Fourteenth Amendment.
Mississippi State Senator Juan Barnett spoke with Roland Martin during Wednesday's edition of Roland Martin Unfiltered about the lawsuit and Republicans attempt to institute "separate but unequal policing".

Richard's waste mgt. won in a blind bid, all the employees are black Jackson residents. The Mayor said we don't deserve that.
It went to court and the judge said it never should have come there.
I'm 79 from Las Vegas, by way of Michigan to live with my daughter. I go to court with her & Working Together Jackson. I'm here for the fight. We are not going to let these white folk get away with this.

      @akilahbrooklyn8236 Год назад +1

      Sharon,
Please don't patronize or insult the use of someone's intelligence by referencing the term 'blind bid' as a term for compliance. Blind Bids are more for private contracts, not for public contracts with the state and local districts. An open bid is required and it has to be approved to ensure that favoritism isn't being garnered towards a particular vendor.
This is what happened in this case.
      For the record,
Richard's Disposal has a horrible reputation in the state of Louisiana. A consumer approval score of 1, many customer complaints, not to mention many hazardous violations. To add insult to injury, they were trying to 'entrap' the city of Jackson into a long term contract.
Nice use of the 'race card' to propel your argument. There are many other disposal companies that can hire residents of Jackson, MS considering, a majority of the residents are BK. This will be for the board to decide. Not the decision of one Mayor.

He thinks that Jackson has some kind of unique problem that no other city has that they can't handle. This person didn't do his homework and needs to be replace with a more competent person. Intelligent black folks should be ashamed rather than yelling racism. Where is their pride??? Where is their desire for good black leadership???? Do they want good leadership or ratchet leadership as the cost of good services like water, safe streets and schools. When are they going to start caring about POSITIVE outcomes for the people of Jackson????

If the Governor can get the Capital Police Officers to patrol North Jackson to the Capital, whose to his next move won't be trying to annex that area to the neighboring counties which are Rankin County where the Governor lives & Madison County!! I am a life-long resident of Jackson, Ms. I think you can see the milquetoast response of this representative. This is the reason that the Neo-Confederates are so bold. Below is a letter that I wrote to the editor of the local paper. Voting is good and essential but black people need to use another tool in this consumer republic which is the dis-United States of America. We need more socially-conscious businesses in Mississippi to channel funds away from those owned by Neo-Confederates.
    The letter:
"Are the citizens in Jackson, Ms., the majority of whom are black, being subjected to discrimination in the exercise of their civil or political rights? How is it that the white-majority state legislature, one that took 148 years to ratify the 13th Amendment, single out Jackson for the attachment of a slave patrol, state police force, to supply black bodies to the prison-industrial complex? How is that the citizens of every other city in Mississippi have control of their police force through local officials that they elect yet the spiritual descendants of the Ku Klux Klan have decided that they can erase the political rights of black people with impunity in Jackson?
The time has come for woke people, people who are not conscientiously stupid or sincerely ignorant, to find and form businesses to serve as alternatives to those run or owned by elected officials like Rep. Trey Lamar and Governor Tate Reaves. We need to find effective ways to vote with our dollars as well as our ballots. The onslaught of legislative initiatives from ALEC and the Mississippi Center for Public Policy towards the creation of oligarchy, advanced and nurtured by corporations, will be relentless. The quality of our lives and our very existence depend upon becoming awake and staying woke with movement toward the common good and protection of the commons. "

Nothing pressing taken place, and they're all just sippin' on a Pop while a confused Floyd just meanders throughout the entire scene.. Meanwhile in Jackson, MS, your constituents are about to become political prey to your 'governor'-klansman and his cadre of stooges. The senator is a bit too 'causal' for my taste.
