Adventures of Superman '53: Faking Out a Crime Boss

  • February 27, 1953: The episode is titled "Crime Wave," and it might be the show's best one. In spite of Superman's presence, an organized crime gang goes on the offensive in Metropolis, against everybody: The general public, the police, and other gangs. One by one, Superman and the police take down the top racketeers, until there's one left.
    That racketeer has a plan, but the scientist he enlists to kill Superman is overconfident. Kryptonite had already been introduced on the radio show, and then in the comic books, but had not yet been on the TV show. Superman was not fooled by the professor: He knew this man was not "Public Enemy No. 1." So he faked being affected by the electric (or radioactive) blasts, to draw No. 1 out and expose him. It had already been established in the comics that Superman could stop his own heart without harm, so he did it here.
    Superman (and Clark Kent, whose side of the character does not appear in this clip) was played by George Reeves; Lois Lane by Phyllis Coates; Jimmy Olsen by Jack Larson; Perry White (revealed in this episode to be not just the publisher of the Daily Planet, but a former Mayor of Metropolis) by John Hamilton.
    The bad guys: Walter Canby, whose public position gives him great cover as No. 1, was by John Eldredge; No. 2, Nick Marone, by Philip Van Zandt; No. 3, Big Ed Bullock, by Al Eben; and the professor by Joe Mell.
    Also in the episode, but not in this clip: Robert Shayne as Inspector Bill Henderson, who often works with the Daily Planet; and Barbara Fuller as Sally, Canby's "gangster moll."

      They were. it's too bad they decided to tone down the violence and the serious nature of the stories. It ruined the show. Who needs Superman to spend a whole episode saving a dog? I love dogs but a whole episode shouldn't be dedicated to Superman saving one. The storylines were that lame.

    • @clarky23
      @clarky23 25 дней назад

      @@daletwin1 like anything else in Hollywood, even then it all boiled down to demographics and money. Seasons 1 and 2 focused on the original intented audiene, adults. But as they learned that it was the children who were really watching the show and boosting the ratings, they were pressured to make it more kid friendly. Plus this was the mid to late 1950. What was serious content for adults then IS children's material now. We see more violence and bloodshed from today's Justice League than what they could hae dreamed of back then.
      Once other influence people don't realize on the show was the Comics Magazine Association of America formed in 1954, shortly after the end of Season 2. After complaints to Congress that comic books were getting too violent and horrific, the CMAA was formed to be a review board of sorts to comics submitted by the members, of which DC Comics was one. The white stamp you see on the cover of comics is the Comic Code Authority Seal of Approval (CCA) and was on most comics until the mid 1990. It still exists today, but almost never used. DC was the one to openly publish without the code with it's premier issue of Swamp Thing. The other comics followed suit.
      So being licensed by DC Comics, the producers needed to follow the direction of their source material, Superman and Action Comics. I feel if the CCMA hadn't been created, they easily could have stayed in line with the original formats and story arcs.

      ages & involved more serious subjects, i,e, the first year was filmed in 1951 & stayed "in the can"
      for a year! Then, after it changed to color, (although, few had a color t..v. yet), it changed to more
      juvenile topics, making it less appealing to adults!

    • @UncleMikeNJ
      @UncleMikeNJ  Месяц назад +1

      Crooks on that show tended to be dumb. This is in line with the already-established line of Batman's: "Criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot." The bosses tended to be just smart enough to talk the lesser crooks into making them bosses.
      However, there is something to consider: On the show, it's not clear how long Superman has been in operation, so it's understandable that nobody yet knew what could hurt him. Eight months later, "The Defeat of Superman" aired, introducing Kryptonite to the show. In 1956, in "The Big Freeze," another scientist determined that extreme cold would weaken him, and it worked. In the comics, it wouldn't have bothered him in the slightest.
