Stone City, Iowa is a 1930 painting by the American artist Grant Wood. It depicts the former boomtown of Stone City, Iowa. It was Wood's first major landscape painting. It is a study of a real place with which Wood was thoroughly familiar, but the landscape has been given fantastical curvy shapes, the trees are ornamental, and the bright surfaces are artificially patterned. The town had been built for its limestone quarries. When the painting was made, the town was in rapid decline due to the development of Portland cement. The painting thus depicts the transition from industrialization and back to rural community. During the summers of 1932 and 1933, the town became the host of the Stone City Art Colony, which Wood was part of Stone City, Iowa was made the same year as Wood's American Gothic and both paintings were successes for the artist. Wood promoted his new style under the label of the "new movement". The painting is located at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. Thank you internet for teaching me this!

Come visit the 1925 Omaha Bungalow to visit the Joslyn. Grant Wood also painted wall size murals throughout the library of my Alma Mater, Iowa State University. Most people just know American Gothic. 🎉

C'mon Mildred Miller! LOL Enjoyed your rendition of "Buttons & Bows"...put me in the mood to watch an old black & white movie this afternoon 😊 I would love to be able to tap into your wealth of knowledge about glassware when I'm thrifting at my local stores. I learned a lot today and saw several pieces I would have been tempted to take home. Your excitement over the art deco pitcher was contagious...then finding the Grant Wood print! Thank you for sharing the story behind it with us. I like the perspective...looking down from the top of a hill - it would have found a place in my humble apartment for sure! So glad you are keeping it for your bungalow...so long for now.

It's hard to tell if the Grant Wood print just has the red faded. I worked in art galleries for years and poster print shops. The red ink tends to fade more quickly than the other inks in UV light, giving the image a more blue/green tint overall. That's normal, but once you learn that, you can't unsee it. Love the finds overall! I'm regretting getting rid of my sandwich pattern glass when I moved. I'm still working on making my own patterns inspired by glass.

Here in Minnesota it doesn't quit raining. I live in southern MN and we have had 7 inches of rain in June. Humidity is tropical and mosquitoes are blooming in droves!! Went thrifting after work today. Found an antique primitive black painted wooden work box with American applica. Best find of the day for 25 bucks. Someone donated from an estate. Might go back for an Abraham Lincoln print. It was in rough condition but would look good in a patriotic display.
