- Hey Good People,
I had a 2018 Nissan Sentra in the shop this week. Actually, 2 Nissan Sentras with the same problem. I I had to replace the fuel pump on both. It is a common issue on those Sentras. This particular customer wasn't happy with the price of the pump. She went to search online and found one a walmart for about $65 shm. These are the type of customers that I have to educate about saving vs quality.
Leave your 2 cents below. I'm interested to hear you guys opinion.

Yes, several years ago I bought the cheapest fuel pump I could find for my Silverado. Worked great for 13 months. The warranty was for 1 year on the part. I had to buy another pump, but this time I bought AC/ Delco pump, which cost 3 times more, but no more problems 5 years later.
the best fuel pump for a gm truck is made by Walbro, they last forever, Summit racing has them, ac delco is like rolling the dice, it is not an original gm pump anything could be in that box

@@jimsix9929ACDelco is original buddy. Acdelco and genuine GM are the SAME thing. I'm a GM guy. Owned many GM trucks and cars. Delco/Delphi pumps are the ones that actually last. Everything else is complete junk.

Most have after a certain year added access panels in the rear seat area.
The odd man out is usually GM who insists, to this day, on *not* putting any access holes/panels inside the vehicle 🤦♂
Most cars are right under the back passenger seat or under both rear seats now a days 😂
Here's a good fuel pump story that I dealt with... had a bad fuel pump in a 2007 Charger. Replaced the fuel pump and no go. troubleshooting for quite awhile, got voltage and ground everything is good to the pump. I started pulling the new pump found that the fuel pump that failed was a replacement and the replacement pump wiring was reverse so when the replacement was installed they cut the harness and switched the sending wire and the ground wires. Now we got a fuel pump that had the wiring correct so I had to redo the wiring harness back to the original way it was. Crazy but we got 'er figured out and running like a champ.

I’d never spend that much on a fuel pump especially on a car with 140k miles and for something that’s so easy to replace.
That Kia Soul I was telling you about had a bad water pump. The dealer that my friend got it from changed the timing belt and water pump for preventative maintenance. The key to maintenance is to use good parts, or you are just installing a time bomb. The one I took out was one year old and so cheap, I couldn't even figure out where it came from and it looked slightly different than all the after market ones. It took an hour just to scrape off the RTV silicon they put on the cheap A** paper gasket they used. I got a OEM (metal infused with rubber) gasket and a OEM pump, and all good now. Lucky it passed the block test 👊 Good vid and lesson 👊
I have a Nissan 15 when u fill up it say it goes 400 on a full tank it only goes 300 maybe 320 if u drive normal I always keep the gas full .i notice the gas gage is not accurate

Great vid. Diagnostic tests were on point. The hard and easy ways. The realistic of going to get tools and coming back.
I would say that probably 98% of the time it’s going to be that pump/sending unit, but it’s always good to do proper diagnostic to make sure and go get that lock ring tool it will make it a lot easier to get that lock ring off hopefully it’s a good one that allows you to get in there with out removing the tank.
Isn’t it always a better idea to disconnect the battery cable before doing any fuel jobs

Yeah when it comes to electric parts, I go with the OEM especially if it's made in Japan. Did she run the gas tank empty a log? Usually, if people keep more gas in the tank, the fuel modules last longer. (The gasoline lubricates and keeps the fuel modules from oxidizing).

Very important rule. If it’s an important part that takes longer to change just get a quality part. You’re just going to have to change it again soon.
I've been burned a few times using cheap aftermarket pumps. Our shop started installing OEM only fuel pumps.
That cars gonna be smelling like gas for the next 2 years 😂

That Delphi assembly FG-1549 is under $400 on Rock Auto. Just fyi. I know people don’t have time to wait etc. 😂Time is money. Imagine trying to warranty something on that site.
Had a similar problem with a 2016 Chrysler 200. It turned out to be a bad coil.
have you actually checked into who builds that part as fare as a stuff goes Walmart oil is as good as any other oil there generic oil filter are just as good as teh expensive ones
but if there sourcing that part from a good manufacture that's all that matters because Walmart isnt making parts them self's there paying companies to do it for them
Never buy from the jungle site it’s only a temporary fix. Get quality parts from a dealer or buy OEM from a reputable parts store.
Can't disagree with you. Their batteries are good and reasonably priced. DEF works and is API rated.
Yeah that's a dead pump.I did my fuel pump in a ford econoline van about 4 or 5 weeks ago.i did it by myself and it was kinda a pain in the azz.The fuel tank was like the size of a coffin and of course the tank was pretty full also
You can basically by every piece of the fuel pump assembly and build it but it but I’d only do that if it’s cheaper and your using quality parts and it saves a significant amount of money and it’s done perfectly otherwise I agree with the docs statement replacing fuel pump assembly is the way to go
150 for part 150 for labor dont let anyone charge you 800 bucks to install this cheap plastic chinese junk in your car

Nissan uses Delphi fuel pumps I believe . I bought one from Rock Auto for $$415.00 But of course it takes 3-4 days for delivery.
Walmart doesn't make or stock the pump. When you order from Walmart it's dropped shipped from another location and Walmart receives a cut/commission.
If your car needs a fuel pump the only place you buy it from is directly from the dealer oem is the only way to go . Never buy parts online factory parts are always better they are cheaper in the long run . Stick with the dealer always

I bought an import direct ( Oreily) for my 8th gen civic and I noticed that my fuel gauge never read accurate, now I had the car long enough so I knew when to fill up based on the mileage. I dont know if something needed recal or what

Anytime a job is labor intensive or the part could cost you an engine (timing belt hydraulic tensioner or belt) you're best off using good quality OEM Part's or top self aftermarket like Aisin.
Good video. I myself don’t own the tool either. I spray the o-ring and lock ring with some good ole wd40 and then tap, tap, tap. 😂
You might have to get a mini tool kit with a flat head, a phillips, and stuff and carry it on your side belt like a cowboy. But then that flathead screwdriver might be in your side when your crawling around fixing something. There has to be a solution. haha
I have a funny story for you Alex, I did job almost the same a year or so ago, replaced the pump, car came in showing over a half tank but was empty, I put 4 gallons in it, this girls dad picked it up running fine, next day she called and accused me of stealing her gas, another reason I no longer take new customers

Just like you said Alex, everybody take note when you’re putting gas at the gas station. Make sure you’re putting gas not diesel I mean I know most of the gas station have the nozzle that fits in your gas and then the green diesel one is a lot bigger and it won’t fit, but some people don’t pay attention, and they just start pumping diesel.
I had that happen to this lady I was at the gas pump pumping gas, and the lady was trying to find a spot to see one next to me. Pulled up, backed up, got out like she was in a hurry and I was pumping on one side and the other side of where I was at was a diesel and she grabbed and I grabbed another nozzle and when I turned around, I noticed nozzles car and I looked over and I seen that she started trying to pump diesel and that she pump diesel and I told her stop and she ready head pump may be a gallon of diesel in your tank . I told her not to crank the car up in Cindo bringing it to me and I had dropped the tank down and I cleaned it out took all diesel out and put it back up and got her back on the road and I didn’t charge it a dime. Yeah she’s a wonderful lady, she was just trying to get to her kids that were in a wreck and wasn’t paying attention. I wish she was doing she is just trying to get her kids which is understandable but I’m glad her kids are OK and her car is OK 😮🙏
94 lumina pump died in 2000. 96 caddy pump died in 2001. Only 2 I ever did. None since.

There is no Walmart brand fuel pump , I bought a ac Delco pump at ac cheaper than the dealer , so if you want to buy quality they sell it to you , if you want to buy crap they will also sell it to you.
Yes I am aware that sellers sell on Walmart just like on Amazon. I know there is no Walmart brand. But they still wanted to buy it from Walmart.

Since there is some fuel pressure in line, I would think the fuel pump is. weak.
I tell all my customers, especially their kids if your riding around on 1/4 tank or less you are on empty. 💯💯💯they always laugh so I ask them if they have a spare $400 to $900 laying around to hand over to me ?? The laughing stops and they realize that I’m not playing .not to mention when they drop off their vehicles for service with not a drop a gas in it . I call them and tell them to come get it
That’s the worse trying to service a vehicle that has no fuel can’t even test drive it

If you don’t value my time then you can pay double or come get your vehicle. If you actually think that it’s ok to drop it off with no gas in it and play dumb when we ask where your wheel lock key is and leave expired paperwork and or no paperwork then you are 💯💯💯💯 that customer that we don’t want to do business with . Oh and I’m booked a month and a half out so 1 or 2 people that don’t have common sense are not the end of the world .. plenty of other mechanics that will deal with that 💩

Alex,...look into a harbor freight electric fuel transfer pump. Youll love it, about $12 , push a button and transfer fuel from a container in seconds.

Great job. I would think there would be a few drops of fuel in tank even after car died. Did you check for any holes in tank? Also would have check power supply to pump before anything else.
I normally check power supply, but I already knew what it was. and was eager to pull the tank pump.

Yup, i never got that lock ring tool either. Even when i worked for GM and had access to it...i never used it. Id smear some wheel bearing grease on the little upward bumps to help them lock in place. Then theres another trick ill have to show on video someday (i might have it on video already, ill have to look for it), but yup, no special lock ring tool. Good job Alex!

I have that tool for the retainer and actually find the hammer and brass punch to be easier.

You can find good deals out there. Just make sure you are getting the right brand and the right part number. If you get them online, send it back right away if it is not the brand you paid for. A lot of online sellers will straight up lie about what manufacturer made the part. They will go as far as boxing a cheap part in a OEM box, so check it ✌
