  • Knee swelling, often called water on the knee, can be chronic and debilitating. It can lead to a loss of motion in the knee and the ability to walk or stand too!
Sometimes doctors offer to drain the fluid in the knee to reduce the swelling. This can help with tolerating more standing, walking and can instantly increase mobility as well.
But is this a good thing to do?
Should you get your knee drained to help with knee pain?
What if that fluid is supposed to be there for a specific reason?
Why does the fluid build up again?
Dr. David answers all these questions about draining the water on the knee.

In the future don't get your knee drained unless you're not inflamed anymore. And you're on a downhill slope like if you look at your knee everyday and you see it going down. You can help it out like that but if you're totally inflamed it's just going to come back the next day or two days later. I look at my knee and I say well it's going to do what it wants to do. When it wants to come down it will. One thing you might try when your knee is inflamed seems to help me it's pineapples and cherries. Either it was a coincidence and it was starting to come down or they helped I'm not sure

I only just learned I have fluid on the knee 7 months after injuring it. No wonder the physical therapy wasn't working. At least now after I get it drained, despite my trypanophiba demanding otherwise, I can start mending the injuries to both the muscles and meniscus this fluid caused.

Okay I thought I would hold off on commenting until I was sure. So my knee was really swollen around the kneecap. From January 25th to February 25th. On the 25th it look like it was starting to go down. It's been going down every day since the 25th of February day and night. I'd say it's probably about 70% down now. Been doing the tailgate kicks. Probably two weeks after My knee got inflamed. This is the third time it's happened each time it happens it's normally about a year and a couple months in between. The first time it took one month for it to go down. The second time it took two weeks. This time it took one month.

Hi, i've suffered from patella maltracking, Hoffas fat pad impingment and patellar tendinosis on my left knee. It started in June 2022. Since then the fluid has been more than normal.
I've tried to strengthen the glutes and foam roll the thighs daily. I've tried to work on my foot muscles. The left knee is longer and is hyper mobile. I've tried to work on my hip mobility.
I've tried to take off pressure from the knee joint but the problem persists. Ghe root cause to this problem is still a mystery. And the doctor didn't want to drain the knee.
I fear that the cartilage on the femur is being damaged. What to do when you have tried all?
Feels like the doctor and the physios don't have the tools to deal with these types of problems. Feels shit.

      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Год назад

Hey Solin! Great question! It really depends on how bad your knee is and if you're doing the right things to help your knee. For some it may take just weeks and for others it might take months...either way, you've got to take pressure off your knee so that you can allow your knee to be more normal. That means you should fix the muscle imbalance.

Hey 123tripleks, sorry to hear about your MCL tear :-(
That's great that you were told no need to alarm, and it's even better that you don't have swelling too! But the fact that you cannot straighten your knee and have been like this for a month is concerning. You likely have a tibial shift and or a meniscus problem.

Hey Anand, We're so sorry to hear that you've been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for 7 years and that your knee has flared up!🥺 To address your question, it depends. If you feel that you have knee fluid, getting it drained could provide temporary relief. It is more important that you address the root cause which more often is caused by a muscle imbalance. We do have additional information and exercises you can view in a playlist for Knee Arthritis Help. If you are interested you can view it here:

I have osteoarthritis in both knees. My left knee had the fluid removed but wasnt able to get a steroid injection because it wasnt 3 months yet. After taking Methylprednisolone for 6 days left knee got swollen again had the fluid removed but this time I was able to get a steroid injection. It has been 3 days and everything is good. I don't have pain when I walk and there is no clicking when I walk. I have noticed thet when I eat potatoes chips or eat fried food my knee swell up. Why is that 🤷‍♀️. Thank you

People with osteoarthritis and other types of arthritis may react badly to potatoes since its a vegetable that belongs to the nightshade family. Seed oils are inflammatory and may cause a reaction in certain people and should be avoided! If you have noticed that your knee swells up when eating potatoes and seed oils you could try leaving them out to see if you improve. With optimal diet you can improve massively. Wishing you lots of good health🙏

Muscle imbalance? Is that because the swelling in the knee is causing the quadriceps muscles to weaken and fire more slowly ?
So in that specific case , the fluid should be drained from the knee first and then start physical therapy to get the quadriceps muscles firing normally again ?

I have no choice with my knee fluid. Have no insurance and no money to pay out of pocket. American healthcare system is for the rich or subsidized welfare poor.
So I trudge thru my day like always. Would be nice for a legit DIY. Fluid drain video to be on youtube.

Wow , what a waste of 10 minutes. This guy spoke volumes of useless information. Several times he mentions the cause being a ,
" Muscle imbalance" , but not once does heelaborate. Which freakin' muscles ??!!
How do you put those muscles in balance ??
He might know what , he us talking about but...
He is failing miserably in explaining S-u-c-c-i-n-c-t-l-y saying how to fix the muscle imbalance with a particular exorcise.

Try writing what you're going to say , then go over it and edit it. Cut out all the verbose blabbering. Get to the point and stay on it. Give every peice of the puzzle.

Hey Rollin' Stone Dave! Thanks for the feedback. We love to teach and educate our listeners about why we recommend doing the movements and exercises we show in our videos. Sometimes we don't show exercises in our videos because it's important to understand what is happening in the body. If you're looking for videos of exercises without explanations for when to do them, then you might not like our channel. You should consider unsubscribing so we don't show up for you on RUclips.
