#3 is huge. When I am conscious of the way that I walk I can actually be pain-free. SO grateful to have been educated this way! Thank you from saving me from any surgical intervention!
I found your channel almost 2 yrs ago and this knowledge has changed things for me in a positive way with both my hip and my knees! I used to have to have a death grip on the handrails when going up and down the stairs and had to take so many Advil everyday and had 2 rounds of cortisone shots - UNTIL I found your channel. After only a couple of months of doing your glute exercise consistently I’m running up and down the stairs as I was able to years ago and I have no more pain or limited ROM. I was told by my doctor that I needed hip replacement surgery and needed intense PT or surgery for both knees because of Chondromalacia. I have NO intention of getting surgery and I refer so many people to your channel when they complain of knee and hip pain. Thank you, thank you, thank you! ❤
Everything you say here is what I've learned through experience over the past year. One thing I want to mention that has helped me to get stronger in walking has been the willingness to use a cane or crutch in the beginning or on days when my knee is in pain. I was amazed that once I used a crutch or cane, it allowed me to correct my walking form so that I wasn't limping and putting too much weight on the other knee. I don't use the cane all the time but when I know I'll have to be doing a lot of walking, more than my knee can tolerate, I use it. At the end of the day and the next day I find that my knee feels good compared to when I don't use that extra aid. Honestly when I use the cane, it doesn't even feel like I'm putting much weight on it, but I'm convinced that little extra aid helps me to straighten my walk and overall that helps with pain, which helps me to be able to walk more.
the video how to walk is fantastic! it really does help but you need some patience. the knees haven't been ruined in one day, they won't heal in one day either ;-) Thank you so much Doctor! ♥
I am a PE teacher,47years old, I was told to have beginning of the knee arthritis 😢the way people walk is important because I wear special soles in my shoes and they help a lot, but I wasn't told what you say ❤ basic and simple principles that make sense 👍 I'm really thankful. It helps 😊
I found you about 2 weeks ago, my extreme sciatica is gone because of your videos. When I have knee issues I’ll know exactly where to go. 💜 you’re awesome
So happy I found your videos. (58 YRS OLD) I hurt my left knee in Novembe, today after an x-ray, and MRI I was told Ineed two knee replacements WHAT! I have bone on bone in right knee (unhurt knee). Absolutely no pain in that knee. The left knee better but I have torn meniscus 8-10 tears and flipped on itself... swelling, very little pain. [ I asked for physical therapy first. ] They drained 50ml of fluid and gave me a cortisone shot because they thought I would have pain after they drained. They moved the needle while draining that hurt... no ultra sound to add . I have 7 weeks till my follow-up, and I don't want replacements.Until I hurt my knee I would sit cross legged on my couch. No pain. Would have stiffness and in left knee when I sat too long...i have sedentary job. I am flat footed pigeon toed and knock needed since young. I was told my knees look like those of an 80 yr old)
This is me. Once I stared following Dr. David’s glute/foot strengthening and foot placement when walking, had an instant reduction in knee pain and swelling. As soon as got lax with it and went back to heel dominant walking, not squeezing, the knee pain and then after a few days swelling would return.
Thank you ❤ Absolutely trying to work on those glutes! 🎉 Re: walking…. I have all my life walked with the weight on the outside of the foot, not on the middle or ball. So awareness of how you are walking is good. I am trying to correct the way I am walking to put the weight on the ball of my foot and not the outside. (Not easy, I have to use intention).
Thank you Dr David, your advice is the best I’ve heard. I have two meniscus tears, and I’ve been working the quads, after listening to you I now work on the glutes. I wouldn’t have thought the way you walk would reduction your knee pain. 🤔 Cheers, I’m watching from down under Australia 🇦🇺
Hi Wendy! Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re so glad you found Dr. David’s advice helpful. Focusing on your glutes can make a big difference in reducing knee pain, and it’s great to hear that you’re incorporating it into your routine. The way we walk plays a huge role in how much pressure goes into the knees, so making small adjustments can really help. Just in case you are interested we have a playlist for knee arthritis help playlist you might find helpful. You can access it here: “Knee Arthritis Help” ruclips.net/p/PLJVIPiFvv1maa9YF-WmKLF7oI4VoczH8i Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not. Cheers to you all the way in Australia! 🇦🇺 Wishing you continued progress and relief! 💙
I’ve been going to PT for the last month and I’ve gotten more information from your RUclips channel and it really helps with the recovery process. When I talk to my physical therapist, I can understand what he’s doing certain exercises I have more of an idea what he’s wanting to achieve .Thank you very much for all your information.
Thanking you again I am so glad I have found your channel!I have been limping for so long not being able to put my left foot down on ground flat .no one told me what to do .Slowly very slowly I can put my left foot on ground for a few small steps now after following your walking advice .
Thank you for this info. I have bone & bone but putting off surgery. Can I put it off forever? I have a fear of going downstairs one foot after the other. I also have low back arthritis besides right knee bone on bone inside
I am practically in a wheelchair because my knee and foot pain is so bad! I am working on my glutes daily but I worry that my muscles are deteriorating because I can't walk much. I'm using my walker and trying to lose weight but it's difficult when I can't move much. I'm 73 years old and I appreciate your ideas.
Thank you and so true, was just told to push through, not by my physical therapists though - they're wonderful. I also JUST got a medial meniscus tear diagnosis, when it happened almost 4 years ago due to a flare last summer. Learning more about OA on my own is helping my outlook, though I also have unofficially diagnosed hypermobility. I used to walk SO much, and need to keep improving for my physical AND mental health. Pacing is difficult but this video is validating and encouraging.
I like to stretch my quads before I walk and it feels good and seems to help with knee mobility. I've never seen quad stretches in your videos. Are there specific quad stretches you suggest?
Thank you for this vlog Dr David. I will take notice and act upon all that you have said and shown. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍I am not over exaggerating, I am so thankful for all your advice.
Thank you I must say thank you...I have been strengthening my glutes and I'm able to walk , Stand for longer periods. The glutes exercises has helped me and I'm doing it everyday. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for all your videos 😊, I ended up with knee pain from having 2 carlige surguries I didn't get the knee pain until 6 mths after the surgery I'm hoping in time the pain goes away, I walk a half hr a day, then some leg exercise it seems to help but as I'm walking after 10 min the knee feels very heavy and the lower leg hurts.
Thank you very much for sharing this very useful information, it is helping me a lot with my knee osteoarthritis, I have a problem with the medial nerve, it causes paresthesia. Do you have any information that could help me? Thank you from Mexico
Iam unable to bend my right knee while walking and have been diagnosed as grade 3 osteoarthritis. I only deaf my rt leg while walking. Kindly suggest how to correct . I have been doing muscle strengthening exercises including the glutes
I had some awful issues letting myself go. Walking was a nightmare but I had always loved walking but I kept on top of it but when it hurt I took time off even it if was for days. But staying on top of it not quitting What help me is when I figured out you have feed your muscles with nutrients which helped tremendously. Search out a great meal plan that is important to muscle wellness and don’t stop even it if hurts. Take time off if your in pain and get them right to it. Nutrition is key also. Feed your muscles.
Have often heard that sudden joint pain while being active is THE signal to stop!✋️ Obey it & rest because if not, yes, you will likely spend the next few days in misery.
Appreciate your expertise on this. With a thinning meniscus I have found bicycling works best for my knees along with strengthening my leg muscles using bands, bridges, etc.
