  • I decided to make this easy DIY potting table/bench as my first project in the new house to get into the swing of things and make the most of the good March weather. As I had the metal frame already, it cost about £55 for timber, spray paints and screws which is cheaper than I could buy elsewhere and took just one afternoon to complete.
    I start the video with what we've been up to these last few months for those who have been watching the channel for a while and might be interested, plus lots of wildlife photos!
    Materials used:
    Rust-Oleum rust reformer spray paint: amzn.to/33NXAuW
    No Nonsense matt black spray paint: this has weirdly disappeared from Screwfix's website - I only bought it a few days ago!
    19mm flat head screws: www.screwfix.com/p/easydrive-...
    22 x 150mm treated timber (gravel boards)
    Engagement Ring ;): amzn.to/3bxVFNT

    Your videos are incredibly detailed and interesting I've been planning blocking in a garage door on a freestanding brick garage which seems very similar to building 1 wall of a garden room. Seeing all of the steps you've gone through is really helpful as I also live in England so all the build regulations stuff is really useful. I've binged through all of your videos in the last day and they've been really helpful in creating a plan and sketchup model for what I need to do (when the quarantine is over and I can get deliveries again).
    Please continue creating videos both large projects and small ones. and maybe update IG more often it's much easier then editing large videos ;)

      Thanks! I'm glad you like them. Yeh I never really got into IG on a personal level let alone for the channel but have considered it many times. With YT you can create something more meaningful that will be watched for years where as with IG it's here today gone tomorrow stuff designed to catch people's attention to their detriment. All the hash-tagging too... I think I was born an old grump!🙈

    Your situation regarding security, return and life satisfaction is one of those decisions I am forever battling with being in my early 20's with my own home with so many renovation ideas but also a niggle in the back of my head saying while you are young you need to take risks and invest.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  4 года назад +1

      It is really hard. The biggest motivator for me is that investing for 40 years, the same amount every month, ends up with double that of 30 years's growth (given a consistent yearly returns). Of course, when there are other demands on income, it is tough. Still, in your 20s with your own home, that's better than most!

    Great to hear from you and nice to have such a comprehensive update. On the money decisions, been lucky enough to have paid off my mortgage recently. This gives an enormous sense of security that I wasn’t expecting and whilst the rates are low it makes sense to overpay as even a small amount more can take years of the term. On the subject of insulated plasterboard had a view of this subject video by Charlie DIYte. Keep will and looking forward to more videos. Oh and congratulations on the engagement.

    Have not used Dexion in years.... Last time was when I built some shelves to hold ZX81and ZX spectrum repairs in a factory I worked at in 1981. Good to see all your work you have been up to. I'm just about to do a first floor timber frame on the brick cavity wall as the cavity is not wide enough. Put the steels in end of Oct/November as I will have a point load on top. So your series of the garden room/workshop is handy. Thanks and keep up your good diy work.... I did before the lock down get a bad of bonding and multifinish so I can get on boarding and repairing the bit I had to smash out to get the steels in..... Laters you two

      Ah the Sinclair Spectrums! Before my time but I sold one for someone on ebay a few years ago for a pretty penny.
      That sounds like a cool project. Email me some photos sometime, I'd love to see it Glen!

    Great to hear you’re safe and well, I’m slightly gutted... my timber delivery was due today but obviously with what’s going on it’s been out on hold until the branch re-opens! I have a few pictures of where I am at up to now 👍🏽 I’ll be looking to order fascia and rubber roof in the coming weeks too!

      Oh no! That's frustrating, I have timber I need delivering and can't find any BMs who are open in my area! Builder Depot are still delivering in London but Selco and Travis Perkins are shut 😩.
      Cool, send me some pics!

    Hey! This one's just a fun little project but it's very satisfying to make a video where I've actually finished the project for once!
    I'll try not to harp on about the virus too much in upcoming vids as no doubt you'll want a break from the news. I'm feeling very fortunate to have a garden to roam around in at the moment especially as we have no idea how long this will go on for. What are you guys doing now we're mostly home-bound? Keep well :)

    good to hear an update Ali. congrats on your engagement. may i ask how long did your summer house project roughly take? i've been looking to jump in with my both feet and start planning out but slightly unsure.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  4 года назад

      Thanks :D Umm I'm literally the worst person to ask about this because 1) I filmed lots of it which slows you down so much and 2) there were times I didn't do anything for months (life). 3) I had to save money to do some things so work stopped. What I can tell you is that from bare ground to the fascias/EPDM, it took me 4 months working pretty solidly. At that point I had a dry, secure building and have just taken my time with the rest.
      With all building work there is a rule which is almost ubiquitous: it will take more time, cost more money and be more hassle than you think! That said, it's totally worth it and a very enjoyable project but if you need a office, for example, in 2 months' time you might have an issue.

    Welcome back thanks for inspiration , i have dexion about two inches on each side in odd lengths how to stitch then together is a problem . i may but up and screw to the timber ( thich pallet wood ) i'm not sure about leaving it outside though even with a cover . As regards finances check out lump sum payments I did a lot of overtime 30 years ago and put in £1000 which was a lot then but it reduced my 25 year mortgage by 10 years an accountant friend of my told me then September is the best time to pay lump sums BTW the building society where quite snify about it.
    When interest rats when to 15 % i kept paying what they wanted it reduce it it stayed the same but if I had extended I would have been paying well past my retirement. Bearing in mind a mortgage is the cheapest money at the moment. I think a balance is the way to go IE spread the places where you put money.which your background you must know people who could advise. in the end it you who decides .
    take care . Illegitimi non carborundum.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  4 года назад

      I had to google the latin 😂
      Yes I think there is a lot to be said for becoming mortgage free (eventually) and not having a monthly payment, even if mathematically it's not the best use of funds. I think we might see where we are at the next refinance. If it makes sense to drop a lump sum to get to the next LTV bracket then that might be best. Good advice, I'm hoping IRs don't go to 1980s levels!

    Re-viewing your garden room videos again and again as I plan my own - they've been incredibly useful. Congrats on the engagement. I am 50 this year and would suggest that mortgages at the moment offer the cheapest money you'll ever get so I wouldn't bother paying it down any faster. If you are lucky enough to save some cash over the next few years then I would look to invest it (check out monevator.com for some info although of course these are very uncertain times) and improve the house. Putting off renovations while you save up is fair enough but if you're not careful you will find ten years has slipped by and you're still living in a cold house with draughty windows and a crappy boiler manufactured in 1982!

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  4 года назад

      I'm inclined to agree with all of that Andy, and Monevator is good! I think we'll take a 3-prong approach when possible and try to do a bit of all three, that way, while we won't hit a home run, we won't feel like we missed out either. It is pretty astonishing that mortgage rates are less than inflation and therefore the amount owed is eroded in real terms more than the interest paid on it. Who knows what the current cash injection into the economy will do though. That said, I'd feel more comfortable once we were at a 60% LTV (extension could help with that!) and could then pivot to focus more on investing.

  • @jasonjayalap

    Financial note: If the interest your mortgage charges you is higher than the interest you can make investing, then you "make" more money by paying off your debt. For example, this is almost always true with credit card debt for most people.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  3 года назад +1

      Yup that's spot on. I'm fortunate to have always been pretty fearful of consumer debt (personal loans/credit cards) but content to leverage cheap debt (property). I still find the balance a tricky one but I've prioritised investing over paying down low interest debt :)

  • @1951timbo
    @1951timbo 2 года назад

    Clear or reduce debt. This is priority. Invest ( shares) only if you can afford to lose your money.
