bass... mass and or de-coupling helps with bass. The foam backing will decouple it somewhat from the other wall if the bass is vibrating that wall, an air gap is more effective but then you will lose even more room space. If the bass unit is sat on the floor it maybe transmitting vibration along the floor so you would need to decouple the bass unit from the floor or make sure the floor is not connected between rooms. Anything under 25Hz will go through most materials though and only unusually thick concrete would help there.
