How to make a cheap Side Gate look GREAT!

  • The first project at the house is a small but satisfying side gate installation. It's at the front of the house so I was keen for it to look good but not cost a too much. This was at the beginning of lockdown (2020 pandemic) so getting materials was tricky so I decided to just buy a gate rather than make one from scratch.
    There are a couple of challenges and some problem solving involved which makes the process all the more satisfying.
    ---
    A thing happened: apparently quite a few of you have contacted the eBay seller from whom I bought my gate, mentioning the video I made. So he reached out to me and offered a 10% discount to viewers off the eBay prices for anyone going direct.
    Andy’s a lovely guy, runs his business solo from his workshop in Lincolnshire, sourcing all the redwood pine from his local timber merchant with delivery in just a few days. He can do bespoke sizes to fit any gap. Give him a call on 01522 697793 or email graysgates@gmail.com and mention my name/ this video 👍.

    Judging from the comments, it seems I wasn't the only one unaware of the difference between red and white wood as it basically looks the same in store so here's a decent comparison table:

    How did the gate do over winter for movement? I made a similar gate last year, including a top brace as my 3x3 post moved too much and a combination lock. Due to the tight tolerances needed for this style of lock I've had problems with the gate swelling over winter and sticking.

    I had a local steel fabricators make up a gate frame out of angle iron, they drilled holes and primed it for fifty quid.. Bargain. I run the slats horizontally and it looks really good 👍. Also when you have your caulking gun out, silicon around the post you set in concrete between the wood and the concrete, no water will get in then. Lovely job and lovely garden and area you got there bro.

    Great video with just the right amount of detail, awesome. I am looking to replace our side gate and including a push button combination lock also however the current gate latch is fixed to a fence panel that sits in a concrete post, any suggestions on how or where I should fit the strike plate? Or do you think I should think about a separate post? Only problem is the space between the concrete post and the wall is fairly limited so not sure if I could put a post between them reducing the width further. Thanks in advance

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  3 года назад +1

      Hi Darryl, glad you liked it. Umm if I have this right in my head you can either attach a batten to the concrete post and then have a little rectangle cut away for the strike plate. This word mean you are only reducing the gate width slightly OR you could try drilling out a bit of the concrete post for the latch to go on, but might rattle.
      I’d go for the batten or replace the post with a timber one 👌

    • @darrylchambers1

    £500 for a steel framed hardwood gate might sound expensive but I think it's actually quite good value when you think about what's involved in building one. The issue that I have found with timber framed gates is that they swell and contract considerably due to exposure to the elements meaning that you will have constant issues with the striker alignment and or jam alignment.
    Secondly the addition of the header is a blessing in disguise as it will help to keep rain off of the gate preventing the mentioned issues.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  3 года назад

      Yeh agreed. If we had the funds spare I think steel framed is the best option. Good point on the header, a silver lining i hadn't thought of 👍

    For attaching a 4x4 post to a brick wall, how deep into the brick should the masonry screws go ?

    • @Jestunes
      @Jestunes 2 года назад

      Personally I would put anchors in the brick (it's more secure) and after accounting for the hole to flush the bolt and washer to the edge of the 4x4., just add the remainder of the length shy of the length of the anchor. If using masonry screws I would screw shy of the full length of the brick. This accounts for not letting moisture and water past the hole in the brick. Silicone is good to use on screw in the 4x4 to stop any H2O from getting inside the wood. Hope that helps.

      Pretty long! The last bit that tapers isn't so useful but still very nice to have and the woods almost feel like an extension of the garden. I hope it doesn't come across as showing off at all, the house needing a lot of work was the trade-off, that and a big mortgage.
