    What I love is when Page would come up with these very simple songs. Maybe it goes back to that whole scene in "Play it Loud" that we've all seen, when he is playing those old 45 singles, and it is plain to see where his true passion comes from. And like Keith Gaertner said on this page, it is always interesting when one realizes there isn't much to the basic song. Is till think Page's true genius was in his production. Incredible about JJ, that you remember these damn solos. there was some tune you did a while back, and like this solo here, it isn't all that tricky, but I do not get how you remember them note for note. I play for a living, and I can't even remember what I did 2 minutes ago myself in a lead.

    • @zepp1832
      @zepp1832 4 года назад +2

      Typically, you don’t try to remember the exact notes. You remember the licks, pattern, or shape you’re playing. Also, hearing the song a billion times like we all have sometimes helps.

    • @thiscorrosion900
      @thiscorrosion900 2 года назад

      The solos are the hardest thing to master, maybe some wizards out there can play solos in their sleep, I cannot. I'm much better at mastering the rhythm guitar parts and picking,
      etc. and always have. Solos i have to really work at and study. Luckily a song like this mainly the riff and rhythm and a bit of soloing with the riff, and then the final solo.

      @Keith Gaertner. Keith, I've noticed that a lot of the songs Page wrote have easy chords. I think he was a master when it came to doing that. He seemed to make a lot of his tunes more complex because of the fills he wrote for them. Ramble On is another prime example of that. I always thought that Pete Townshend's tunes were easy, till I started getting into Led Zeppelin.... Just my opinion because they both came out of the 60's British song writing style...

I remember jamming with a friend back in the early 90's and I happened on the opening riff and really getting excited and my friend immediately shot it down, and said "that can't be it, to simple Jimmy would be playing it up the neck in a different shape" I always thought it sounded right and played it as such. I don't get a chance to play as much anymore these days, and haven't played this tune in years. But you really made my day !! Thank you once again my friend 👍👍

    It was… jimmys #1 actually had four push pulls… and a switch under the pick guard… the switch was connected to this small box that was fabricated quite brilliantly and placed in the guitar I’m not sure where. But one of the Main guys at Gibson HQ in England did a video with andertons music and the guy said that’s what they found in Jimmys Guitar. Quite interesting that they didn’t really understand why it was there. 😭😭

    that's a good theory except that Jimmy didn't use a les paul to record that song on the album at least, he used his Dan Electro guitar. if you try that through a vox 30ish sound, you can get pretty close. he probably used some mic techniques, phase cancelling, mixing board tricks to get that sound on the album though. sounds like a little comb filtering even going on underneath.

    Question to JJ - the whole section of this clip about the guitars is totally interesting. I think in HotH e.g. the best part abut is probably the guitar sound itself. And when you were talking about your theory re the #1 I kept wondering what f/x it would be exactly that Page had in there. It's more than some kind of overdrive. There is something out-of-phasey going on. You know, I read about Bo Diddley's guitar, that it supposedly weighed like half a ton because he had so much crap inside it. Envelope followers, boosters etc

    @James James. JJ, Edit: Page most likely used his Danelectro, or a Tele, through a delay pedal, unless the engineers did it through the board....
    ***BTW, you did one heck of a job with this lesson. Your suburb guitar playing ability really shines through on it. I'm a good rhythm guitarist but I always try to learn any of the fills &/or solos because I usually do them, well, sorta lazily, ya know, full of a lot of little cheats mostly because I hate putting that much time into any tune I learn. It's Probably a bad habit but it's just how I play. I imagine if I was a truly better guitarist, I could see getting away with the cheats, especially if I put an extra effort into learning each song correctly.... Thanks for posting this one JJ, Take Care, I hope all is well & God Bless you & your Wife... MD........

    The tone on this particular studio cut is coming from a comb filter effect from the Eventide effects unit they were using in the live shows on Roberts vocals. It's not the guitar. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in. I read that a long time ago because I was super curious myself what was used in this song. Peace. (It's definitely not a flanger)

      I 'm not hearing it. The guitar has some type of effect on it, whether from a pedal or a special on-guitar effect or pickup. almost sounds like a wah without varying the effect level with the pedal. someone here called it a "cocked" wah.
