"It's my mistress, it's my wife, and the great thing is it doesn't beat you up for alimony."- Jimmy Page
I absol love how you start off every video by playing through the song. We can see exactly what you are doing in real time and then we dive in. Much appreciated my friend.
I agree! Plus it's a great reference to go back to and play along with once we've mastered the chords...!!!
Agree. Love to see the whole song. Very great lesson .
The fact that here it is 45 years later and we're all still trying to figure it out shows what an genius Jimmy was...hell, he was probably using a tele ;-)
Thats a humbucker on the record
Well said Jamie 👏
What I love is when Page would come up with these very simple songs. Maybe it goes back to that whole scene in "Play it Loud" that we've all seen, when he is playing those old 45 singles, and it is plain to see where his true passion comes from. And like Keith Gaertner said on this page, it is always interesting when one realizes there isn't much to the basic song. Is till think Page's true genius was in his production. Incredible about JJ, that you remember these damn solos. there was some tune you did a while back, and like this solo here, it isn't all that tricky, but I do not get how you remember them note for note. I play for a living, and I can't even remember what I did 2 minutes ago myself in a lead.
Typically, you don’t try to remember the exact notes. You remember the licks, pattern, or shape you’re playing. Also, hearing the song a billion times like we all have sometimes helps.
The solos are the hardest thing to master, maybe some wizards out there can play solos in their sleep, I cannot. I'm much better at mastering the rhythm guitar parts and picking,
etc. and always have. Solos i have to really work at and study. Luckily a song like this mainly the riff and rhythm and a bit of soloing with the riff, and then the final solo.
It's always a twist to keep the mind following it
Your playing is awesome been following you for years. I think I’ve learned 90% of my plying from your vids ✌️
Too cool! You really have a great ear to hear and copy all this. Thank you for demystyfing so many of my favorite tunes. I can't believe this is just A, D, E in the first position...Who knew? You knew! Thank you James! You're the best. ; )
Nice comment. I agree.
Listen dude listen. As He says listen and try and play. You’d realise it couldnt be anything else
@Keith Gaertner. Keith, I've noticed that a lot of the songs Page wrote have easy chords. I think he was a master when it came to doing that. He seemed to make a lot of his tunes more complex because of the fills he wrote for them. Ramble On is another prime example of that. I always thought that Pete Townshend's tunes were easy, till I started getting into Led Zeppelin.... Just my opinion because they both came out of the 60's British song writing style...
Love the Showco shirt, a real classic
Side 1 and Side 2 my favorite piece of vinyl ever.
Led Zeppelin lll is still my favorite of all of them!.... Followed by Physical Graffiti
Mine too. Since I’ve Been Loving you tops them all, but PG is a close second.
Wheat Project Definitely my two favorites!
unfortunately, I can barely stand to listen to Zep due to countless hours of my teen years playing their records in10 second intervals to learn Jimmy's parts. the only studio record I ever put on is Zep3. somehow timeless. the BBC live discs are great, too.
I played this on my 12 string rickenbacker in my band days back in the 80's. It's a jamming tune
thesledge1969 I bet it was awesome sounding with your Rickenbacker!!
LOVE this song. Our bands been playing this one for a while. I was never really into Zep until I learned “The Rover” for my audition and we’ve added Houses since then.
This song is the predessor to Joe Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good”...... Listen to the structure slowed down.
You are awesome. Thank you for this.
Finally, i've found someone who hears it too!
That’s a good ear you have. Didn’t hear it until now
You may be right but houses of the holy came out in 73 lifes been good in 78 so you were saying Walsh took it from Jimmy lol
@@nickostendorf2558 Yeah....Didn't take too long after hearing Joe's tune that I noticed! And we know that Jimmy and Joe are guitar pals.....
This is classic Zep that has to be played on a Sunburst Les Paul for that extra crunch. Thanks!
I saw SHOWCO. I clicked! Love it! I have numerous reprint/knockoffs I wear them so much I get asked if that’s where I work and then I get the question “what is showco?” These days I just reply “a defunct touring production company”. Oh what I would do to have originals!!! Some tasty Zeppelin there as well!
Excellent work my friend! 👍
Man, JJ you’ve nailed the sound and the playing on this. So good. Thanks!
“Forget the solo”
Ok James, I can beat you then😂😂😂😂
Another I thought was too difficult , now I know I can play the shit out of those chords- THANKS!!!
You have some great guitars & amps. I would love for you to do a vlog showing all your guitars, amps & pedals!
Yessss !! I remember jamming with a friend back in the early 90's and I happened on the opening riff and really getting excited and my friend immediately shot it down, and said "that can't be it, to simple Jimmy would be playing it up the neck in a different shape" I always thought it sounded right and played it as such. I don't get a chance to play as much anymore these days, and haven't played this tune in years. But you really made my day !! Thank you once again my friend 👍👍
My favourite song!
Wow! Flawless...you're really feelin' it today. Had your fingers dancing. Love that you do this JJ. You provide practical education with fun and there's that entertainment value you provide too. Keep on keepin' on. Well wishes to you and yours. Be safe...be well...
That was great. It would have blown my teenage mind many years ago that most of this song is in the first hand position.
Thank you so much for this. Ive been looking for houses of the holy but i felt like every video was off. Except yours! Thanks man!

Forget the fills? I’m here for the fills. 🤣
Lol my hand speed ain't there yet
One of the great examples of out of phase Les Paul middle position sound!
Great Zep tune from a fantastic LP!
Love the Showco shirt, not too many folks know who they were.
Simply glorious! Thank you! 🙏 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
great rendition, and killer Showco shirt!
Nice man. So much easier to watch someone play it versus the tab. Thanks again.
Dear Friend James ? You are a Master ! Thank You for your time and attention with us. Congratulation !
I think I actually enjoy checking my versions of songs to yours even more than learning something new. you have a better ear. I learned this the same way almost 40 years ago. as always, thanks for taking the time to share your videos.
Mr James James, I just wanted to thank you for all your wonderful videos. I first came across you on your old site when you were playing some beautiful Jesse Ed Davis - how he gets so little love is criminal - and I was immediately taken by the way you capture the essence and feel of the song rather than worrying about the minutiae of 100% accuracy. After all, rock and roll is about feel. Please keep sharing your obvious enjoyment with the world.
What an incredible range Plant had. Thanks for posting. Love the song.
It's amazing all the stuff that goes on from what guitar/amp combo to what's heard on the final track. Blows my mind. I love the riffs that incorporate chords and riffs....
Keep the zeppelin videos coming love em
Another great video James. I love your explanation and analysis! Keep up the great work!
Love this man
I always enjoy your videos, thanks.
This has always been one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Thanks for the up close demo and tutorial.
nailed everything
It sounds like jimmy has his Wawa pedal Someway open to get this sound.
Holy Quack man! Such tone!
I have a Gibson JP and only the treble pot on the bridge pickup is push pull which changes it to single coil. In the middle position the selector switch puts both pickups out of phase.
It was… jimmys #1 actually had four push pulls… and a switch under the pick guard… the switch was connected to this small box that was fabricated quite brilliantly and placed in the guitar I’m not sure where. But one of the Main guys at Gibson HQ in England did a video with andertons music and the guy said that’s what they found in Jimmys Guitar. Quite interesting that they didn’t really understand why it was there. 😭😭
Awesome. Needed to learn that. Spot on.
*goosebumps* 😂 well done!
Thanks Jimmie jams,, love the zep
Much Gracias senor James. From your friend Ancho Poblano.
First comment! Man.. one of my favourite riffs from Pagey, and that raw sound of Graffiti is so nasty...
Very cool. Thank you!
Awsome Jimbo👍
amazing guitar love it love the music
That was an awesome video. Thank you.
As always a great tune, and lesson ty!!
I agree Frank. The one thing I couldn't figure out was, why is the song Houses Of The Holy on the Album ''Physical Graffiti'' & not on the Album, ''Houses Of The Holy''???? I know that Led Zeppelin had a bunch of older songs that they'd mix in with new material to put on each album but it's just funny that's where this one ended up at.......
It’s a good zeppelin song
Awesome shirt too!
Always an amazing tone guy
Great Riff! Thanks James!
So simple yet effective!
It’s a great song to play loud with a les Paul & Marshall
Very cool
Kickass James!
Houses of the Holy came out in 1973, Life's been good came out in 1978.
The track was 1975 on PG.
Awesome job 🤪🤟 love zep
Like the colors of the Les Paul .
Great work as always man! Thanks for all you do!
Woa you're back!!!! Thank you thank you thank youuuu
As usual great lesson! Appreciate it!
Cool!
Such a small little detail, but so effective
that's a good theory except that Jimmy didn't use a les paul to record that song on the album at least, he used his Dan Electro guitar. if you try that through a vox 30ish sound, you can get pretty close. he probably used some mic techniques, phase cancelling, mixing board tricks to get that sound on the album though. sounds like a little comb filtering even going on underneath.
DAMN
Thanks again James🎶😊
Critiquing Led Zeppelin. It's a bottomless barrel. I'm so glad I was around when this hit the streets. We all knew it was next level then.
You look like you're having a lot of fun playing that song - which is understandable because Zeppelin is just fun to play!
Hay JJ good stuff 👍👍👍
Another great lesson! Just wondering; I am hearing Tele tones in that number; not sure if Jimmy totally retired that Tele by that time, but........my $.02 in that tone. Jimmy may have said it was "No.1" (his LP from Joe Walsh) but ...............Jimmy did a whole lot in those studio recordings as you know. Thanks again!!!!!
Question to JJ - the whole section of this clip about the guitars is totally interesting. I think in HotH e.g. the best part abut is probably the guitar sound itself. And when you were talking about your theory re the #1 I kept wondering what f/x it would be exactly that Page had in there. It's more than some kind of overdrive. There is something out-of-phasey going on. You know, I read about Bo Diddley's guitar, that it supposedly weighed like half a ton because he had so much crap inside it. Envelope followers, boosters etc
The EMP Museum (Experience Music Project) in Seattle has one of Bo’s cigar box Gretsch’s on display and it’s a real beauty. If it’s anything like a Jet, it’s gotta be heavy. Behind glass of course, so no touching!
Nice job breaking it down, you are the man!👍
Gnarly Gristle Tone!! Tony Likey
ThanQ, JJ
Nice rocking bro
sweet from the start
@James James. JJ, Edit: Page most likely used his Danelectro, or a Tele, through a delay pedal, unless the engineers did it through the board....
***BTW, you did one heck of a job with this lesson. Your suburb guitar playing ability really shines through on it. I'm a good rhythm guitarist but I always try to learn any of the fills &/or solos because I usually do them, well, sorta lazily, ya know, full of a lot of little cheats mostly because I hate putting that much time into any tune I learn. It's Probably a bad habit but it's just how I play. I imagine if I was a truly better guitarist, I could see getting away with the cheats, especially if I put an extra effort into learning each song correctly.... Thanks for posting this one JJ, Take Care, I hope all is well & God Bless you & your Wife... MD........
I always thought Jimmy Page used a Tele on Houses of The Holy. But I'm certain you know more about what he used than I.
I play it on my Tele cause I don't have a L. P. , but it sounds pretty badass on my 335 too LOL!
Well played! Compared to a lot of other stuff, particularly modern stuff, this is an outstanding tune.....however within the Led Zep portfolio, not one of my favourites. Good Album though, Rain Song and No Quarter...how do you come up with stuff like that??? Amazing
Houses of the Holy is from Physical Graffiti.
John Kendall I believe Houses of the Holy the song, was left over from the Houses of the Holy album session?!
Hell Ya!!!
cool
Excellent groove. Laying slightly back from pocket.. I think
Wow that looks like a semi doable zep song I can play. Thanks. Must get some zeps under my belt.
Have some Lou reed, lynyrd, stones,
Dude, thanks!
Let me correct myself, the song Houses of the Holy came out in 1975 on the Physical Graffiti.
The tone on this particular studio cut is coming from a comb filter effect from the Eventide effects unit they were using in the live shows on Roberts vocals. It's not the guitar. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in. I read that a long time ago because I was super curious myself what was used in this song. Peace. (It's definitely not a flanger)
I 'm not hearing it. The guitar has some type of effect on it, whether from a pedal or a special on-guitar effect or pickup. almost sounds like a wah without varying the effect level with the pedal. someone here called it a "cocked" wah.
Its delay with a plate reverb
Great vid! Thank you! What amp, effects and pedals do you use?
Peavey Vypyr 100 on this one.
@@jamesjames9275 Thank you! 👍
