Spirit really is a beautifully underrated movie. And it wasn't until I rewatched it as an adult that I was told about the film's anti-colonialism message, especially the allegory for Native Americans residential schools:
How Spirit was kidnapped from his family, brought to a place where others like him had been assimilated, had his hair forcefully cut, got forced into new and uncomfortable clothes (in this case, a saddle and harness), was denied food and water, got abused and degraded by a racist white man in power and any resistance was threatened with violence and death.
And given how the Colonel was heavily modelled after/inspired by General George Custer (a man who played a major part in the genocide and suppression of Native Americans), I'd hardly call it a coincidence.

    • @UsagiMay
      @UsagiMay Год назад +16

Exactly I never understood why people think that's a bad thing. If a movie makes you feel something that it's supposed to, that means the creators of the movie and everyone worked on it did their job because that is the point. I was completely broken from this movie, everything that happened to Spirit and the other horses was so unfair. It didn't help that I was an avid animal lover (and still am). I was already ugly-sobbing from the scene where Spirit was born. And I've rewatched this movie many times throughout my life, and I can physically not restrain myself from crying. Unfortunately, the thing with the post and starving/dehydrating was a common training tactic back then. It was never right, but it WAS done, and it weakened unruly or super strong horses so they were easier to deal with. For his time, the colonel would be considered a good trainer, not least because he stands his ground. I like to think he was at least a little kinder after the events of the movie.

The fact that this movie came out in 2002, is the most anatomically correct animated horse I've ever seen, and they were able to create such a masterpiece with such minimal dialog makes this movie the best by far. The soundtrack is incredible as well! Even at 29, I still watch this movie with the same emotion and love as I did when I was 6. and also technically, spurs are ment as a tool to help give ques, basically an extension of your leg/foot. Back then spurs were a LOT different than what they are today! Horsemanship was also wildly different back then too. Horses were simply tools and not seen as anything other than. Horses kick each other much much harder and can cause much more damage than any spur can, but I have seen, in the wrong hands, people leave awful sores on horses because they were abusing the tool meant to be as an aid.

to answer your question about the spurs, yes and no. when used irresponsibly, they can hurt the horse. you're not supposed to actually _kick_ with them, jabbing them in their sides like the Colonel did. that can definitely hurt them. how you're meant to use them, is by simply pressing into their sides, slowly increasing pressure until the horse responds, thereafter immediately releasing the pressure. horses have much thicker skin than people, so pressing in like that until they notice it doesn't hurt. it would be like someone using a finder to slowly press into your side or stomach until you notice their touch and move away from it, 9/10 you move away from it well before the pressure is enough to actually hurt you. same principle. and some horses do actually need spurs, as some horses have a "hard mouth" which means they don't really feel/respond to light encouragement to move, including kicking/tapping with boots without spurs. as opposed to "soft mouthed" horses, which hardly need a little bit of pressure from legs/reins to get moving. the different styes of spur, pointy, rounded, etc, are all just for decoration/fashion purposes. they all feel the same to the horse, even the pointy ones, and again when used properly they don't hurt them. spurs should really only be used by responsible, experienced (adult!) equestrians. but yeah, sadly there are people out there using them who really shouldn't be, including kids who should never be allowed to use them.
_anyway_ appreciate the reaction. had me laughing many times lol. and you are absolutely gorgeous btw. love your hair!!

The score is so beautiful and ear catching thanks to Hans Zimmer and the fact that this movie released right after Shrek kind of blows me away, as DW went from a goofy crude humored fairytale parody to a serious story about a stallion. No matter what people say, this movie will always be on my list of some of the best DW movies, especially in their early 2K years😁🌟

Dont know if anyone mentioned this but Spirit's character design was based on a Kiger Mustang (a specific type of mustang that originated in the Kiger Mountains) that DreamWorks bought to have the artists for the movie watch to get a feel for how horses move and show emotion (as they are notoriously hard to draw correctly) for this movie. The horse was called Donner, however after the movie he was renamed Spirit after the character he inspired and now lives at a wild horse sanctuary.
Rain, Spirit's girlfriend, wasn't inspired by any specific horse. Despite that, the American Paint Horse Association gave her an Honorary Registration with the breed and can be seen on her article on the Spirit Wiki.

I actually wanted to do a solo in choir for "Sound the Bugle" (the song when he was on the train) but my teacher said I couldn't since I couldn't imitate the singer's raspyness. Interesting fact, though, Rain is actually officially considered to be a representative of the Paint breed of horse and has a certificate made by the APHA. She was the first cartoon (or fictional in general, I can't remember) horse to have been accepted.

As an avid equestrian, here’s an answer to some of your questions.
    Spirits Girlfriend is named Rain
Rain’s owner is named Little Creek
The chief (the guy you hate)is called the Corneal
The spurs the Corneal used when breaking spirit are basically an extension (or reinforcement) or leg cues. I sometimes use spurs on my horse but very gently. If spurs are used to harshly it can cause physical pain and make the horse less responsive to the spurs and leg cues. A crop is a mini handheld whip mainly used in English, saddleseat and Huntseat riding. (Note: The saddles and tack used on the horses in this film was English tack.)
I have a theory Spirit’s homeland was in Navada thanks to the Corneal mentioning something about Nevada when he thought he had broken in Spirit. In the train scene, the colonists were going to bring the train to connect with the Utah railroads since the Nevada (and possibly Arizona) railroads weren’t complete at the time.
This film was made in 2002, and the events of the movie roughly took place in the mid to late 1800’s due to how much of America was colonized and the technology and people illustrated in the film.

Spirit was and still is one of my favorite movies of all time. Yes spurs (aka the pointy things on the white men boots) do hurt horses. Horses have thinner skin than humans and more nerve endings meaning they feel a lot more pain than us humans. I love the whole historical meaning and how they didn't sugar coat how much horses and Native Americans suffered and went through. This movie was also what got me into learning about wild horses and how we should just leave them alone because we already have domesticated horses of our own and enough of them who need homes.
In conclusion Spirit is a beautiful underrated movie that teaches us a lot and im glad you loved it. ❤

I find the Colonel a fascinating Antagonist, because he never comes across as _evil._ And that doesn't mean that he does not do Evil things, but it is clear that he does not revel in pain and misery, nor, I think, does he view the things he does as evil. He views them as necessary for the continuation of the Status quo. My guess is that he is probably quite well respected by his soldiers, as he seems a hard but fair man - to people he views as his equals in humanity.
And that makes him a very real Antagonist. Not a monster that Purposfully destroys all in his path for the sheer pleasure, but a mundane, normal man with all the ideas and prejudices of his time, doing things that cause tremendous harm to the environment around him, without ever blinking an eye.
Someone who so naturally views Animals and Native Amricans as beneath him that it does not occur to him to treat them with respect and decency. I highly doubt these events will change him. He will maybe tell his Soldiers of that "One really special horse" or "That one indian, who really was something" but it won't change his overall worldview. He doesn't set out to learn and I don't think he does apart from not chasing these two individuals in particular.
It's the same in Spirits Victory in a way: We all know it is temporary. Maybe he is lucky enough that it will take the humans enough years that _he_ does not have to face them again, but they will come. They _will_ take the land he calls home, the _will_ catch the herds of Mustangs. All his Victories are, in the long run, hollow. And I know that sounds depressing, but that isn't actually how I mean it. I think it does show that even small Victories are worth fighting for. Maybe the inevitable is exactly that, but maybe you can at least delay it, get a few more years for you and your loved ones. Even a bit of peace is better then none

As a horse rider, there are various types of spurs (the spiky things on their boots, lol!) (I use English Rowelled Spurs, Disc even though I am a Western Rider and don't compete) and are meant to give more clear and direct communication to the horse and more control over the movements. Not hurt the horse. However, depending on the spur itself and how heavy the rider's cues are, it can cause distress for the horse and cause bleeding. I have seen this a lot and it makes me so angry! Don't use spurs until you learn how to use them correctly and work on having a softer touch or use spurs that do not have gaffs (spikes)

It depends on the type of spur, and how hard you dig in, that determines if it really hurts. They are not really supposed to hurt the horse. Untrained people and people who dont care will be the only ones who will hurt a horse. In reality you dont ever really want to use spurs.

    Some geographical and historical context:
-The Cimarron is somewhere in Wyoming.
-I think Spirit was taken to Fort Laramie, but I'm not 100% sure.
-The colonel is George Armstrong Custer. As in the Battle of the Little Bighorn and Custer's Last Stand. He doesn't hate Native Americans on principle. He hates the Sioux specifically, because his Native allies do (and to be fair, the Sioux were one of the most aggressive and warmongering nations in pre-Columbian North America, so they made a LOT of enemies, and are responsible for making the Blackfeet historically aggressive).
-The Lakota Sioux were chosen as the human protagonists because they were naturally gifted with horses. Horses were reintroduced to North America by Europeans, and the Sioux had previously never heard of them. But once they received their first horses, they mastered them in record time.

-I think the implication is that Spirit is an especially fine horse and would make an excellent breeding stallion
-3 days without water isn't just Animal abuse, it would _kill_ a horse. Horses can go a maximum of 48 without water _if_ they have accsess to some food that would give them hydration like fresh grass, but after that, they would develope quite severee health problems. After three days without food or water in the scorching sun, Spirit would not be able to stand, much less throw the Colonel off.

I love this movie!!!!! And, referring to the part where they tethered Spirit to the post, it is part of training. It is cruel and there is a better way to do it but, sometimes necessary especially for a wild horse. But. It is better to earn their trust. And the spiky thing on the boots is called spurs. They can hurt the horse only if they are used incorrectly and too much too hard
