  • My heartstrings, holy sh**... this movie HIT ME HARD. Welcome to my movie reaction/commentary/first time watching of SPIRIT: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), and this time we watch a true work of art that I regret not watching as a kid, and this story about freedom following Spirit, Little Creek, and Rain has made me feel so many emotions through its music, cinematography, and beautiful visual storytelling. I genuinely believe this is a masterpiece from DreamWorks!

Thank you, Darqui....as one of the directors of Spirit, you really made my day with your wonderful commentary. I loved hearing your impressions and cannot believe this movie is still bringing enjoyment so many years after making it. I'm very proud we took the chances we did to bring this story to life....thank you again.

You and Kelly honestly did such a masterful job at crafting such a powerful gem that needs to be talked about even more, and yes, you guys deserve so much praise for creating one of the best animated films from DreamWorks imo! Fun Fact: As a Lakota person, they actually do speak very simple Lakota during their scenes. When the boys are playing the one says “I’m a bear now! Run!” And the others ones say “Run!” And when the little girl is playing with spirit and her mom calls her she says “That’s bad! Come here!”

@darquidarqui I did some research while doing an in depth breakdown of why this movie is so good, and I found out that Little Creek's actor is legitimately a Native American and had input on the portrayal of the village! That made me really happy to see.

13:20 native american children who were sent to residential schools also had haircuts forced on them as part of the effort to strip away their cultural identities. idk it's a little detail (and also probably, mostly, to show the passage of time) but i like that the movie has spirit's mane grow out after he stops actively trying to escape the lakota

Spirit really is a beautifully underrated movie. It wasn't until I rewatched it as an adult that I was told about the film's anti-colonialism message, especially the allegory for Native Americans residential schools:

How Spirit was kidnapped from his family, brought to a place where others like him had been assimilated, had his hair forcefully cut, got forced into new and uncomfortable clothes (in this case, a saddle and harness), was denied food and water, got abused and degraded by a racist white man in power and any resistance was threatened with violence and death.

And given how the Colonel was heavily modelled after/inspired by General George Custer (a man who played a major part in the genocide and suppression of Native Americans), I'd hardly call it a coincidence.

The eagle resembles freedom. And that first separation is Spirit losing his freedom by being captured. While the second eagle showing up but leaving (I’m assuming bc that eagle just isn’t the same eagle as the first so it doesn’t recognize spirit as a friend) again is the sign of him almost gaining it back but not being truly free yet.

Rain's name was never really brought up in the movie (except once) but a creator of the movie once said her full lakota name (like Spirit-who-could-not-be-broken) is Runs-long-in-the-Rain. Apparently she was born during a rainstorm? I can't recall exactly.

This has been my favorite movie for as long as I can remember. I was only a few months old when it came out, so it was a huge part of my childhood; I was OBSESSED with it, the animation, the music, the fact that it was a horse, everything. Spirit was nominated for the best Animated Film of 2002 (or something like that), but it lost to Spirited Away (which I also enjoy).

something that is often overlooked ist the fact that, when the colonel tries to shoot little creek approaching him during the invasion of the camp, Rain sees it and blocks the bullet with her body by rearing and turning. horses have massive muscles in their shoulders, if that same bullet hit Little Creek, he probably would have died. There weren't many chances to give depth to her character but she is one loyal, selfless little horsey. especially because it wasn't something she had time to think about, it was just the instinct to protect her human friend kicking in.

Spirit's "There's danger here, leave, NOW!!" At the beginning has no joke stuck with me ever since I first watched it at 6 years old. It's such a frantic, desperate noise that it immediately triggers my fight or flight. Even without any words, it still 100% conveys the terror and the adrenaline. Edit: also the frame at 32:19 is literally chilling. Spirits slightly opened eye tells so much. You can actually SEE that he knows exactly what will happen. He knows the humans are gonna take him away again, he knows that he'll be forced away from Rain, and he presses his cheek even harsher against hers, praying it's a dream, but knowing deep down that his nightmare will come true again. You can literally FEEL his dread and conflict. Best movie ever, hands down.

It's such a bleak moment, I love how serious the tone got and how committed the movie was to it pretty much the whole time. This movie is truly incredible and i loved your reactions and comments. As a whole most artists agree horses are VERY difficult to draw. Most video games can't even make them half as realistic. But Dramworks did it, and it was the perfect decision to give them eyebrows to show emotion without making them look too uncanny valley. The singer for this when all out, there was one day he was even really tired/sickly but he still recorded the song and used his rough voice to make the song hit hard. Truly a childhood classic.

You're currently my favorite (and only subscribed to) react channel - you give us the reaction AND you spend God-knows how much time doing extra research after the fact. You add so much content to the reaction itself that your channel ought to set a bar for the genre, imo. Thanks for also setting me on a film that I bypassed when I was a kid. The soundtrack, the cinematic storytelling, everything was so breathtaking. I understand and appreciate it even more as an adult. They did an incredible job showing the injustices and atrocities committed against nature and Native Americans during the expansion of the West, while also being kid-friendly about it. Yet the ending is so inspirational and hopeful. Whatever evils and perils you come across can be overcome, as long as you hold onto hope.

Вам не нужны говорящие животные, вам не всегда нужно чтобы вам разжевали чтобы понимать все, тут история рассказывается с помощью музыки, цветов, просто видеоряда, мы прекрасно понимаем какие слова были между лошадьми, я считаю это просто искусство изобразить так понятно без слов, это главная изюминка фильма которую очень многие не понимают. i loved your reaction and analyzation of this movie so much! really, really agree with everything you said. this was a childhood favorite of mine. i saw it in the theaters as a kid, and yes, i sobbed lol. my parents were wonderful and went and bought it with me and my sibling the second it came out on DVD, and i proceeded to watch it millions of times while growing up. i was already a horse kid, this movie really only enabled my love of horses haha. but watching it as i got older, i came to really understand the depth and beauty and meaning of this film, and it's themes of freedom and undying determination. truly a masterpiece film with gorgeous art and imagery, raw, realistic characters, and unforgettable messaging. and the MUSIC, oh my goodness i had the soundtrack on repeat. hans zimmer's epic and iconic score for this movie is criminally underrated when it's some of his best work imo, the emotions in the music is so palpable. and bryan adams did a wonderful job as well, his singing and the lyrics were incredibly heartfelt and a perfect musical narration of spirit's life and feelings! to date, the soundtrack--especially the score--for this movie is one of my favorite of all time. it's very hard to beat.
i will say, things did unfortunately used to be that horrible when it came to how people worked with and treated horses, but it's gotten a lot better over the years as people have really come to understand them. the US marks on those army horses are called brands, hot iron/fire branding in particular. it's a practice still done today, though much differently. cattle still tend to get hot iron brands since it lasts permanently and is cheaper. but horses almost exclusively are freeze-branded now, which is far less stressful or painful than hot iron brands, though it is more expensive, and sometimes there are issues with them and they don't last/become illegible. american mustangs that were legally caught (by the bureau of land management aka BLM) always have freeze brands not only as a way to identify, but also as a protection for mustangs as a whole (it's rightfully illegal to just go and catch a wild mustang for yourself since they're federally protected--and it goes without saying that killing them is highly illegal as well--you can only adopt the ones that get rounded up at BLM adoption centers). so their brands prove that they were acquired legally and their owners were inspected and approved to care for them, and helps prevent them from ending up being sent to slaughter houses. also happily the term "breaking" a horse isn't really used anymore for obvious reasons, it's more commonly called "gentling" when it's with mustangs, or "starting" when it's with younger domestic horses raised in captivity. and the methods for gentling mustangs is thankfully much more natural now, with a primary focus on creating a bond through respect and trust. there are still abusive horse owners/trainers/riders out there sadly, but there are just as many, if not more, who love and respect their horses. but this movie is definitely a powerful reminder just how important it is to respect nature and animals, because at the end of the day they're living beings too and are just as deserving to live and be happy as we are.
anyway, sorry for the essay comment, but it was really lovely to see you connect with this movie. i really appreciate when men (particularly amab men) are open to watching movies like this, rather than writing it off as too girly (horse-related content tends to get that label, which is preposterous imo, but i digress). people really miss out on wonderful stories when they have that close-minded perspective. so your reaction, commentary, and your freely expressed emotions, were such a breath of fresh air. thank you!

One of the things that always gets me about this movie is knowing that after that happy ending... we all know what happens to that beautiful homeland. The pain of losing the heart of the land the way we have is so sharp and deep throughout this movie. There wasn't really a happy ending.

    • @darquidarqui
      @darquidarqui  6 месяцев назад

That is very, very true. I actually didn't think about it until I discussed this movie with a friend who also loves this movie. The themes this story presents really resonate, there's just so much beauty and darkness in this film.

I'm still watching and liking your vids, even though I wasn't active in the comments or in the premiere chat for some time. My depression caught up to me and I didn't want to interact with anyone or anything lol. I'm on medication for some weeks now tho and feeling a lot better :)

I LOVED this movie when growing up, I wouldn't shut up about it and would watch it multiple times a day because adhd (I had a CD copy), when I couldn't see the movie anymore because my copy got corrupted I started watching other movies
I got introduced to how to train your dragon years later and I also fell in love with those movies since they got out, as in I know the dialogues and sounds in two languages level
After more than 10 years of loving both movies I finally made the connection between them lmao I can't believe it flew over my head like that
At one point of the reaction I just said out loud "yo this is og httyd" then realized lol
Love your reactions! I like to binge watch them all like a series so I'll definitely see more later!

My friends girlfriend worked on this movie so was able to see pencil sketches from preproduction long before anyone knew this was being made. It was cool. Growing up with horses my whole life I had always loved the fact they made this movie from the perspective of a horse. And yes Rain made me into a horse furry.

That's so cool, the behind the scenes and prep for a movie is so fascinating for this kind of films, the approach is definitely unique in this one. That's so cool, this movie really made me love horses so much more than before. And I love that haha Rain supremacy! 🙌

This was, my favorite movie as a kid. I would watch this on repeat constantly. I loved it so much, even if I didn’t fully understand it at the time. So underrated I’m so glad more people have been watching it in recent years.
I’ve actually learned that they based the plot on what would happen to Native Americans sent to white man “schools.” As they worked closely with the Lakota people throughout its entirety to make sure it was accurate as possible. Care was put in every part of this film and it really shows.

I saw this in theaters when it came out, it was actually the first movie that I ever saw in theaters (unless my parents took me to one as an infant that I don't remember) and now I'm 26 years old and this movie is still my absolute favorite movie. Well actually it's tied with Prince of Egypt but still.
I forget where I read/heard it but someone once said that Disney makes art, Pixar makes emotional stories, but DreamWorks makes masterpieces. And Hans Zimmer scores both Spirit and Prince of Egypt, Hans Zimmer is always a win.
