I love that this movie _wasn't_ like, "Oh yeah, the _Lakota_ dude was able to dominate him just because he's more deserving," instead teaching healthy boundaries and mutual respect, and that it still wasn't okay for him to ride Spirit if he didn't wanna be ridden, especially not just because he's a good person. Just because you treat someone well, doesn't mean you deserve to do something to them that they're not comfortable with.
Im not native, but I did like the fact it wasn't again just "He's native American so he is one with nature and can instantly connect with and tame this wild animal." He does connect with Spirit better than the colonel, but it was that he understood that no one should tame this horse and it was a big deal that he was allowed to ride Spirit that one time.

@@carleehooley6338 Apparently the main horse in the show isn't Spirit, but rather Spirit and Rain's son. Who they decided to name Spirit as well. ...I don't think they really thought that through that well. But the Spirit Jr. horse has a white blaze marking that our Spirit here doesn't have.

@@carleehooley6338 Yeah, I never watched it. It's just that the show didn't ignore Spirit's own boundaries because the horse in it isn't actually him. Still has issues lol
There's a story that was told by the cowboys of the late 1800's of a beautiful black stallion and red mare that were inseparable. They had been sighted together several times, and attempts had been made to capture them, but they always got away. Finally, a group of cowboys managed to capture them, and discovered that the mare was completely blind, apparently from birth. They let the horses go. There were sightings of the pair for many years afterwards, and a legend was born.

Edit: might I also point out that the grey horse getting a circle around it's eye means it's praised and respected for its grand eyesite and Grey boi is always the first to see and greet Spirit???

@rorygal2991 I've grown so used to hearing 'natives' in media that are only gibberish or composed by a non-native person. This is a classic for us, and I'm happy to see more and more movies and stuff that features real native languages and cultures

I loved that the horses didn't speak in this movie. Horses don't have eyebrows irl, but the makers decided to gave them eyebrows to show their expressions more and they did a great job on it.
I agree! They did a fantastic job of giving them emotions without making them seem too human or creepy.

Its still one of my favorites. And even though I forget it sometimes, its always nice to rediscover and return to, and its always amazing.
True Run Free is a great running track
This is what films need. Not more colorful characters with goofy, over the top performances, but rather characters so well written, that even though no words are spoken, you know exactly what they're about. Even the villain was so great that in the end you can't help but respect him a little. This movie is a masterpiece, and always will be.
I always think if you can truly hate a villain you've wrote a good story.
Spirit did the slow hand/nose trust touch before How to Train Your Dragon did. Just sayin!

Both are Dreamworks movies. It's also a common thing to do with animals when you're trying to put them at ease or gain their trust.
Bryan Adams absolutely killed the soundtrack! The opening "Here I am" is just so sweet and makes me smile. Get Off Of My Back just gets me hype and Sound the bugle will always make me cry. The animation is still great. One of the most underrated animated movies IMO. So glad to see you react and enjoy it Oscar!
Just thinking about this film makes me tear up every time. I must have seen it only twice or three times because I'm such a wreck after each viewing but it's soooo gorgeous it stuck with me...
One thing I love is that when they were writing the song for when Spirit is born, someone said "What about 'Here I Am'?" It was so simple, to where it was the perfect title.

I feel like this story is also a tribute to all the horses who were captured and tortured and died in these conditions during this time period. From being broken to starved to dying from exhaustion and thirst. It is such a beautiful movie with so much heart and these movies just don’t get made anymore

Apart from the fact I cry as soon as the first notes of the first song starts, the scene in the train, when he imagines his herd running always makes me bawl my eyes out. I cannot watch this movie without crying, it's so beautiful and conveys so much emotion with barely any words spoken

Hans Zimmer did the soundtrack. One of his best!!! Originally the idea was that there will be no exposition. But then they decided to bring Matt Damon in and help a bit. I think its okay.
No wonder its so great. This same dude did the soundtrack for Prince of Egypt, one of the best animated soundtracks ever. He also did movies like the Lion King , Kung Fu Panda, and Megamind. All great animated movie soundtracks
As a native american myself, this movie always hit home deep. In some way of form, I always tear up during this movie. Growing up, this movie was particularly my favorite and will be my home seed for the rest of my life.
Didn't know I needed to cry for 41 minutes and 21 seconds straight today but here we are apparently.
This is such an emotional movie that really tends to get us horse people in the feels. Highly recommend Black Beauty (the one with Sean Bean in it) on this particular theme of movies with horses in them that wreck you.

My mom and I also adopted a rescue horse who was rescued from a kill pen, starved twice in his 14 years-when we got him he was 14. He has a dent in his face from when he was 6. The rescue place told us he is a pure straight Egyptian Arabian. Given his poor life he’s had, he has never lost his spirit or went mean to protect himself. He isnt ridable and customers at my work, some have even said “Why even have him if you cant ride him?” Or “whats the point in owning a horse if you cant ride or event?”. I tell them “The bond. Plain and simple”. The bond alone we have formed makes him and I inseparable. My mom told me “he seems to taken to you more and that’s perfectly fine”. Him and I play chase in the pasture and when he’s scared of something, he doesn’t bolt or pull away, but hides behind me or dances around me but doesn’t hurt me. Rescue horses and animals have the incredible personalities and, when they form bonds, it is truly amazing. Im honored to be chosen by Hal, our rescue horse, to have this bond with him. Sorry for the long, long comment, but I cant express what such an incredible experience it has been! Lol
The lifespan of a horse is typically between 25 and 35 years give or take my first mare that I had lived to be almost 29. She was in pretty good shape when she passed so it was kind of unknown what she died of same thing happened with one of my other mares, who suddenly succumb to paralysis. Usually horses waste away rapidly in old age and pass away quietly but I’ve seen ones have heart attacks and strokes. In the wild most are taken by predators or injury.
Horses sometimes pass away without any "reason" for it. They're not like humans, the can pass away simply because they're old, they will simply lie down and never get up again, they don't need to have a reson for passing. I have a 33 year old mare, she'll become 34 this year
@@aleydistordera9167 I knew a 36 year old Arabian gelding. I’ve had so many horses come and go during my life time that I remember the ones closest to me. I wish horses lived as long as humans. I miss my childhood mare.

@@at1the1beginning when humans die of old age it normally happens because the old age creates a cancer or a heart attack or something that kills you. With a horse there doesn't need to be such thing, they can just decide "I'm tired" and just pass away peacefully in their sleep without any cause of death. I hope I'm explaining myself right...

Dreamworks didnt do very many 2D movies, but when they did do them, they did them SO well. This is definitely one of their best!!
Horse movies like these are crazy underrated, and hard to come by. I always loved films that didnt need many words, or a main character who speaks, in order to show off its story. Especially when theyre focused on animals! This is truly a gem
Spirit narrating he wondered if his herd missed him and the picture showing all the mares looking up at the same time breaks me man. They all miss him so much 😭😭
A lot of people dont know this, but the villain in this movie called "the corporal" is actually Custer.
And their "home" is right below the tetons, so they travel through arizona and utah and wyoming throughout the whole movie
I wasnt expecting you to react to this! I love this movie so much. Did you know that they actually recorded and used real horse sounds. "Sound designer Tim Chau was dispatched to stables outside Los Angeles to record the sounds of real horses; the final product features real hoof beats and horse vocals that were used to express their vocalizations in the film."
From animator's stand point this is an amazing movie. They used 3D models for a lot of scenes as an reference and then drew over it so it would match up with the camera for some of those amazing shots. I could talk about this movie whole day. xD

The animation for this movie was revolutionary for it's time (2001), Dreamworks invented an entirely new form of animation and had to build the software from scratch. The seamless blend of 2D and 3D was the first of its kind.
This movie is so underrated. It's such a beautiful movie. the sound track and artwork are amazing. but their ability to tell such an emotionally captivating movie with so few words is an art of it's own. And dreamworks was basically a nobody at the time, But they outshined even Disney here.

Oh my gosh, YES!!! That's the first movie I ever full-on cried to. I saw it many times growing up and was sad but fine... but I watched it on the anniversary of my childhood dog's passing, and that's what finally broke me!! I've been full-on crying at movies ever since 😭🥹😭💕
also the original "incredible journey" ...the homeward bound version sountrack hits like a bus.
also i'd suggest the 1972 version of call of the wild... it cast a GSD as the main dog - but it hits hard...
Yes, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and Black Beauty 93 or 94 versions are my 2 favourite movies. Spirit is probably a close 3rd!
The way they portrait all this different types of love with such softness, I mean through music and silence its just so perfect in my opinion, I really love this movie so much, we can get sooo much from it!
I know it was hard to see but yes the female horse did get shot you can see like a dark circle up on her front leg. That’s the hole 🕳️ where she got shot.
This is a great film, and ha s a bit of historical context in the film industry. One of the first times that DreamWorks was able to bring real competition against Disney in the animation genre, especially after Don Bluth (stopped directing).

This has been my favorite movie my entire life. It came out a few months after I was born. I love the animation, the music, the fact that it was about horses- everything. I can’t wait to see what you think (I can’t watch this right now but I’m definitely looking forward to your reaction once I can)
This movie is amazing and despite some inaccuracies it’s one of my favourite animated movies! Sad part is that this is how mustangs were treated, and worse, there is a reason the english word for training horses to be ridden and handled is called breaking in. If you loved this movie I really recommend Black Beauty from 1994 and War Horse from 2011, two other amazing horse movies with so many emotional moments and lessons about animals and how they are treated.
Ahh a classic from my horsey kid childhood. I wish we'd get an animated Western like this again...anyhow, some answers and random facts:
- A domestic horse's life span can be from 20-30 years, even beyond that. Wild horses can make it that far too sometimes, there was a particularly famous Mustang stallion named Picasso who was likely over 20 when he was last seen.
- The Mustang isn't actually native to North America, but is the descendant of escaped European (mainly Spanish) colonists' horses that reverted to a wild state, and ended up kinda becoming their own breed. They were nearly wiped out in the 1940s, and while they're not exactly on the brink of extinction nowadays there is still MUCH controversy and debate as to how many of them can be allowed to be roam free in the USA/Canada.
- Spirit's ladyfriend Rain is a nice example of a paint/pinto horse, much prized by the native americans for their colour and markings, some of which were believed to give the horses supernatural powers. The feather in her mane is likely a coup feather, given to warriors for specific deeds in battles and raids.
- There was a story about a stallion who used to avoid capture by running full speed up and down nearly sheer hillsides, and that the wranglers' horses would refuse to follow at the same pace. Later on he was caught by a native american who used him in his own wild horse catching efforts, until one day the stallion had enough and launched himself off a cliff, preferring one last 'flight' in freedom even if it meant his death. It seems likely that Spirit was inspired by stories of such animals.
This is my favorite movie of all time. I grew up with it and I always watch this when I feel down. This movie is so beautiful in every way and I wish there were more like this one.

It always warms my heart when I see adults who have embraced their inner child, and watch animated films like this one. When we are children we enjoy these in one way, but as adults IF we can still tap into our inner child, we can still feel the joy, but we can also appreciate the story, and those little nuances that we as children can sometimes miss. Isn't it glorious for those of us who have that ability to see with the knowledge and wisdom of an adult, but also with the love, and joy of the child like heart. Great reaction as always Oscar. I used to watch this movie on vhs every day when I was a kid. Now it just makes me so emotional and nostalgic. Movies just don’t get made like this anymore. It’s stunning

this movie is really so timeless. loved seeing the emotion and empathy when Spirit was taken from his mother and herd. i agree with your assessment at the end - without the verbal communication we have to rely on our nonverbals which seem to make you feel it more
The "You're a soldier" song is called Sound the bugle, and it's an amazing very powerful song. One of my favorites of the OST~
This movie was my childhood, a favorite of mine right along with HTTYD. The movie is just plain beautiful and the music is top tier. I cry all throughout the movie, especially now that I'm older and can understand more elements of the story. Also if you didn't catch it Spirit's wife's name is Rain 🩷 great reaction!
Hans zimmer + Bryan Addams = perfect, iconic combination
This movie and Black Beauty 1994 were my favorite growing up! Black Beauty goes into darker parts of being a horse in the 19th century UK. It’s so gorgeous and the storytelling is amazing! Has some familiar faces in the cast and is based on the book with little variation. It is definitely the sign of a great movie when it is so close to the source material. Love if you’d check it out!
That book actually helped the treatment of horses
Bryan Adams did the songs, Hans Zimmer did the score, and Matt Damon narrated haha but that's why the music was so amazing and dramatic and fit the environment

If you want to watch a live-action movie of a 'horse's journey' in a more modern, domesticated horse setting, watch Black Beauty (the 1994 version). BEAUTIFUL movie that will probably make you cry XD
Also Horse Nerd here in danger of sounding like a know-it-all (sorry):
- Horses live for about 25-30 years depending on their level of health and care, but some have been known to live beyond that, even to 40.
- Spirit was based on a real horse who still lives today, as far as I know, and both his fur color and Rain's fur color exists in real life, Spirit being a Buckskin Dun, Rain being a flaxen chestnut paint/pinto.
- Properly breaking or 'starting' a horse can indeed take a few weeks if done well, months if you really want them to have a solid foundation.
- Wild mustangs still roam free today, in Nevada and Wyoming for the most part, though their numbers are dwindling due to mass roundups from the government
There was a horse at my barn that lived to 42. This movie always makes me cry because I said goodbye to my paint mare when I had to move across the country and didn’t want to separate her from the horses and home she knew her whole life. I gave her to my friend and she sends me pictures and I get to visit her whenever I can.
I think I just spent about 41 minutes crying. This movie is incredible and the soundtrack gets to me every time.
I'm studying animation because I want to make movies like this, as good as this. Where the animation doesn't need words to communicate. It's almost the definition of animation to me, image sequences that speak louder than words. Animation that makes you feel :)

Another good horse movie I recommend is Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. It's about a 10-year-old girl and her dad who works at the racing industry, and they nurse an injured racehorse back to health. It's a really great movie, definitely one of my favorites. Totally recommend if you're wanting to watch another good horse movie.
the soundtrack is on another level with this one, I'm obsessed with this movie!!! this movie always gives me chills. I was 11 when this came out. had it on vhs. this movie came out in 2002. Lifespan of a horse is typically 13-17 years but some can go as far as 20+
omg yes, along with this movie, The Man From Snowy River, and The Silver Brumby were staples of my childhood! we horse loving kids consumed ALL horse media from every country regardless of our country of origin or the language barriers, we were desperate for good horse films 😂 I remember seeing this movie in the theaters as a kid, and oh man was i crying at the end haha, i still tear up whenever i watch it even now. the movie is such a beautiful representation of freedom, both for animals and humans, and also the difference between genuine respect and care between humans and animals (as expressed through Little Creek and Spirit's relationship) vs the abuse that can be and sadly still is present from humans towards animals, especially horses (as shown with how the Colonel treated Spirit). "breaking" horses is an older term that isn't so commonly used nowadays, more common terms are "gentling" a horse (particularly when working with mustangs) or "starting" a horse (more often used with young horses that have grown up around people). the methods are a lot more natural now and more about building trust and respect, rather than in the past where it was about forcing a horse to accept a rider. there are still bad horse owners/trainers out there, but over time thinking and methods have thankfully changed a lot. but this movie is a good reminder even now to always treat animals with the care and respect they deserve. if any other animal could have the title of "man's best friend" i should think it would be horses. horses are companions for life :)

I must’ve seen this movie thousands of times by now. My parents said I used to play this movie, finish the cassette, and just put it right back in when I was a kid. But it’s been a while now, and this movie always manages to make me cry. Thank you for watching it and reminding me how much I love it
This was my favorite movie as a kid. I lie, favorite is an understatement; I was OBSESSED with this film back in the early 2000s.
Also one of the first DVDs, if not the first, that I had instead of VHS. The DVD came with mini games, commentary, and, my favorite, tutorials on how to draw a horse. Probably one of the biggest things that kick-started my love for drawing and art. Still thoroughly enjoy listening to sound track.
Might just dig it out, pop it in and watch this weekend. I'm so glad that this childhood movie still holds up today even as an adult.

Btw, I think the eagle represents his freedom. When he says that sometimes he feels like he could fly, you can see the shot of the eagle in front of him, and it almost looks like he has wings. And even when he is with rain and he sees the eagle turning his back on him, it feels like he isn't completely free yet.

As someone who grew up watching Spirit, I know it back and forth and love it, will forever be my favorite movie, I don't know if it's confirmed or anything but I like to believe that the eagle is the simbol of freedom (like in the real-life America). Spirit galloping across the fields with the eagle - with freedom. Then he gets captured and loses his freedom - the eagle leaves him with the humans. Then at the end the eagle is back with our fella, living a free life again.
It's just crazy how with less speaking than other movies they made it so good and so so understandable. And the soundeffects and songs...Masterpiece.

A movie from 2001 where we see how travel to the west was violent and racist. A Native person voiced by a Native actor. Horses for the most part look like horses, excluding a few added human features for style and emphasis. A story where friendship isn’t the answer, but it’s about accepting help and that it’s okay to accept help, and it’s okay to part ways in the end. Really a fantastic story.
I absolutely love this movie, it is so underrated. Fun fact Spirit in the movie is based of a real horse. The animation is so good because they studied the body language of real horses, the way the ears move, how they run, it’s incredible how much effort they put into this movie. I love it
...I made a comment on your Beauty and The Beast on James Baxter and talked about him animating the dance scene, and I mentioned Spirit! I CAN'T believe you now watched this! James talked about sitting in a field, and studying horses for full work days is insane.
Yes, the cg has aged, but the 2d is timeless! Drawing horses is so hard because of their proportions because if it's wrong, it's obviously wrong. Not even mentioning their walkcycle! One hoof touches the ground at the time. Even videogames are only getting it 'right' now! At least with Zelda.
And they recorded all the sounds, they had such a huge library of horse noises. And they all work so well to convey the emotion.
It's so amazing how they established Spirit as the ours embodiment of freedom and independence in such a short time, so it really hurts when you see him caught by those ropes..!
I love this movie and I loved it even as a child. The first time I saw it I was 5 years old and I was obsessed, I saw it almost every day. At that time my mother was pregnant and we had to choose a name for my brother and I tried in every way to convince my parents to call him Spirit, but they didn't want to... I wonder why?!?😂
This was made in 2002 and it still stands the rest of time as one of the best horse movies out there.
💖Bryan Adams also sang all the Sound Track in the French version! Just so good. The french lyrics are very poetic and full of metaphores, which really added to the experience. It was very fun to watch the original english version when I learned the language. I noticed that In Sound the Bugle, instead of saying "leave me lying here " in english, he says "let me die" (laisse moi mourir) in french, which broke my heart even more. Spirit was my favorite movie growing up and it still is very precious to me and my family.💖Very happy you enjoyed it and to see all these people showing love even after all these years💖
This is my favorite movie of all time. As a child it was amazing, but as an adult its outstanding. This movie wonderfully tackles tough topics like colonization for younger audiences, and also has one of the best sound tracks of all time. Total tear jerker from start to finish. One of Matt Damon's best movies hahaha!

Thank you soooo much for watching this highly underrated gem of a movie. I first watched this when it came out in theaters when I was a kid with my mom, my best friend (horse lover) and her mom (also horse lover). I wasn't really into horses back then and I didn't expect to really like this movie...boy was I wrong! I loved it and all four of us cried. Afterwards I bought the soundtrack thats so good. Thanks again ❤

Such a small detail when he was fighting that wild cat at the start that said so much in so few shots. When Spirit raised his hooves to stomp, that cat instantly prepared itself for death. It saw it coming and held nothing but fear for its life. Spirit, knowing he had won and didn't need to prove anything else stomped close enough to scare the cat and let him know that he could have killed him if he wanted to, but instead spared him. Spirit showed him mercy and respect, letting it go to survive somewhere else.
In a way that show of respectful mercy comes back to reward him at the end of the film after "The big jump."
Yay, another reactor who watched this movie! You had some really good insights, and I'm really happy to see that you allowed yourself to get emotional. To answer a few of your questions, horses can live up to 30-35 years, sometimes older. Breaking a horse naturally does indeed often take several weeks or even months. Rain also did get shot when she reared up to protect Little Creek; you can see a dark round spot on her shoulder when she's laying on the lakeside afterwards.
And to balance out the sad, here's a fun fact: during the scene where Spirit is watching Rain, the mare, and showing off for her, he's behaving exactly like a real Stallion who's.. frustrated.. would be.
Sometimes words just cannot express that raw emotion. I'm sure that's where the term "words can't express how much I love you", comes from. Or even the deepest of sorrows. They did amazing at making the facial expressions mean so much more, even though they imposed human facial expressions, they still added the authentic animal ones, as well. Beautifully done!

This is one of my favourite movies from the childhood! There’s another good animated movie that’s worthy of watching. It is named “Balto” and this movie is based on the true story of the eponymous dog who helped save children infected with diphtheria. I’m sure you will like it too.
I rarely comment on RUclips, but I had to say here that you have a lovely heart. This movie was one of my comforts growing up. I watched it in theaters when it was released, I watched it with my late grandparents when I was a kid, and numerous times with my parents. On my own too, as a lonely homeschooler. The expressiveness without words always captured me, and your reaction brought me back to childhood. I’m glad you enjoyed it 💛

Horses live a LONG time, the oldest horse my family had was 40 years old.
To "break" a horse properly, you teach them to "gentle" and its basically earning their trust instead of forcing them to obey which is honestly fantastic.
Rain was shot, if you go back you’ll see a spot on her shoulder where she was hit which spirit didn’t notice till he looked towards where she was hit then broke down believing she wasn’t going to make it. This is my childhood movie that I always held close to my heart and I STILL cry every time.
This movie was my childhood, still might be my favorite movie of all time. It's not the greatest movie ever, but it just did everything so perfectly it's still imo the most underrated Dreamworks movie ever made.

I loved this movie as a kid and it’s still my favorite to this day because of the emotion it captures and the POV from the spirit of a free animal. I feel like so many people don’t understand that animals have feelings too or they feel they aren’t as complex. They really are.
This movie was a huge part of my childhood! I was a certified horse girl and a rider for years, so this definitely came out at the peak of all that 😁 To this day, I think this might be Hans Zimmer’s most underrated score. Such a masterpiece of music
You mentioned the Man From Snowy River, that’s my dad’s favorite movie! He was a rodeo cowboy and horse man for many years, he had a beloved buckskin (just like Spirit!) who he would take on weeks long trail rides in the mountains and stuff. We watched that movie so many times growing up. This movie, Spirit, I saw in theaters when it first came out, it was one of the first times a movie made me cry and definitely the first time I cried in a theater. It’s just so touching and told so beautifully and the music is so emotional!

One thing that i love is how the villain is not a force of destruction, dont get me wrong, i fucking hate this mans guts, BUT he recognized spirit as a free spirit that could not be broken or dominated, spirit deserved his respect and he recognized that

This movie is just a stand out movie for me. No movie else is comparable with it, its a beautiful gem!! The music, the animation, everything fits. I love when reactor react to this but everytime i need to prepare nyself for tears and goosebumps. And honestly the sheriff is one of the best bad guys I've ever seen on tv. He has so much respect at the end towards Spirit, its amazing to see that development

Spirit was my favourite movie as a kid. I have watched it HUNDERDS of times, but this was the first time i watched it in a long time. The way i just ugly cried the last third of the movie. I did not remember it to be this sad from watching it as a kid...
I saw this at the cinema when it first released. I was 9. I loved it and my mum bought it for me on VHS and I watched it so many times. One of my favourite childhood movies. And the opening song is so good.

I don’t cry easily during movies, but no matter how hard I try I always cry at the scene where Spirit gets caught and his mother screams for him. Never have I ever watched this movie without dropping a single tear😢 It’s my favourite movie and always will be💘
