I just wanna mention that the medal doesn't actually give him strength or something; it just makes him invicible/ immortal. So that strength and power are all him. I think it's good metaphor. He's confident with the medal and can do amazing things, but when it's gone he's scared and can't do anything. Confidence is key; you can be the most skilled person ever, but without the confidence to put those skills to use, there's practically nothing. I do like how in the end he gained confidence and was able to fight without the medal.
I'm sad that Joaquin was neglected throughout this video, because there was still quite a bit of character to him. Similar to Manolo, he lived under his father's shadow, who was also a town hero (he was an orphan before the general took him in I believe) so he had a lot to live up to. The general also encouraged that saying "you're just like your father." In his eyes, he was doing exactly what he was raised to, his life's purpose of continuing his fathers legacy. Thats why the mustache bit, because his father had one, thats why he kept talking about his metals, because his father and the general had metals, and that's why he was arrogant, because he was filling the role of hero, the "yes, that is what I do, reward me like I have been before," it became expected because heroes get rewarded for their good deeds. He still deeply cared for Maria, somewhat seeing that she didn't actually love him when she felt pressured to marry him, and trying to tell her that she didn't have to. So even towards the end of the movie, he was still in that fantasy realm until Manolo showed him how to be truley heroic. He realized the error of his mindset, and his life basically playing pretend, and willingly throwing away what granted him that life, and trying to redeem himself by actually saving the town. He failed in that regard, but proved that he was done. "No more shadows" as he put it. He was going to create his own legacy. I think he's pretty underrated because people might assume he's cardboard like many third triangle characters, but he's so fleshed out. I love how they handled the love triangle trope, especially as I grew to love Joaquin. Also the "light and dark path" coding of their stories with La Muerte and Xibalba, and the generosity vs greed between Manolo and Joaquin. That beginning part really established their dynamics.
I know Manolo singing the "im a creep" song comes off as weird at forst lol, but when you look back on it, it really feels like its about how he never felt accepted by the town or his family for not wanting to bullfight. He doesnt belong bc hes seen as a "weirdo" by society. He feels such a gap between himself and Maria bc of their societal acceptance and status. Makes me wanna cry sometimes.was it just me tho?? Ayone ele have other theories?
My heart when Manolo starts singing to the bull(s)! For so many years, bulls were killed by the Sanchez family for the entertainment of others. They wanted revenge, which they had every right. They didn't ask to be angered on purpose and slain. Then came Manolo with his guitar. He was the only Sanchez to give an incredibly heartfelt apology, understanding their anger. All they ever wanted was a genuine apology, someone in the family to acknowledge the injustice they had suffered. Now at last, they can rest in peace.

I loved his cover of the song. I think it being a odd rendition is the point. Especially cause of the lyrics like “im a creep, I’m a weirdo” idk if it’s just me
@@nqvsli no I totally agree. I think the song could have been good if he didn't do the chorus honestly Because the lyrics FIT Manolo except for "I'm a creep" however to his father he is a weirdo, he doesnt belong and he IS in love with Maria. But I totally agree.
May i just say how every female character in this movie is just so iconic? Like, most of the main guys look like 🏋♂ (Actually just the main 3) and the girls are all so memorable and have such iconic and distinct designs, i love all of them, they all slay.
The romance in this movie it is just so cute. And Joaquim Is my favorite character he is so fun and his character development is great, his friendship with Manolo Is so sweet. I LOOOVE this movie. PS: I had a major crush on La Muerte
So glad you reacted to this movie. It gets overlooked by Coco so often and Disney totally stole the themes and concept from this much smaller studio, which is a terrible shame. Disney also tried to copyright the phrase "Dia de los Muertos" for merchandise when Coco came out and got publicly lambasted for it. Book of Life also had a strong team of Hispanic writers, directors and producers from the start who wanted to make a fun movie that reflected their culture, while Disney seemed to shuffle together a handful of cultural consultants only after some of the backlash hit the public. And don't get me wrong, Coco is a lovely film, but it still comes off as stereotypically Disney and the behavior during production revealed that the film, regardless of good writing, truly only existed to make more money by exploiting cultures that the executives were not themselves a part of. Book of Life, of course, was crafted to make money too, but there was significantly more focus from the team working on it to tell a Mexican story by people from Hispanic heritage and that shows in the final product. TLDR; This movie doesn't get nearly enough love and Disney is a cooperate hydra that will do anything for money.
the culture of Hispanics (in this case, Mexico because of the holiday) is not so popular in cartoons, and as soon as it starts to be used in the plot of these cartoons, the cries about plagiarism immediately begin ((((these two beautiful animated masterpieces have a DIFFERENT plot, but the same concept, so what the hell is this а plagiarism? You probably also call all films about Christmas plagiarism of each other?
@@apelsinpark Last I checked, the focus on a main character who loves music and is raised in a family who hates it and sees musicians as lesser, has nothing to do with the holiday. To say nothing of going on a spirit journey to the afterlife and finding family members long past that also had a love of music and gave it up for the sake of the family as a whole. Earning approval from a parental figure through being yourself has nothing to do with Dia de los Muertos either. Sure there are differences, but the core values of the main characters beings so specifically similar rubs me the wrong way.
@@apelsinpark from what i remember reading, The Book of Life was presented to Disney in its early stages and they rejected it...and then started working on Coco, sooooooo idk. take that as you will
Please tell me I'm not the only one who sheds a thousand tears when Manolo was in the land of the dead and fighting all the bulls that every other Sanchez had killed every time they watch the movie.
This is a little cute thing I found in this movie but at 27:30 to 27:34 when Manolo is seen coming back from the dead there is a heart shaped light around him showing that the love he has for Maria is so strong. It’s soooo cute❤❤😊
This is my mom’s favorite movie, and I absolutely love the soundtrack in it, I mean at this point I might as well learn the Apology song on ukulele, haha
Rukiya, so you saw the part where Maria's Dad said to Joaquin "you saved my life!" he likes Joaquin more than Manolo because Joaquin saved his life, but general posada is too happy to realize that Manolo saved the town too! (Also, candle maker looks like a cup of beer!)
I love how Maria challenged the social norms that were placed in her town and how she defined her independence as well as being a boss b while doing it PERIOD😍
I LOVE THE BOOK OF LIFE!! I had it on DVD when I was little, and it raised me! My Spanish teacher was also named Maria Sanchez, and my 4th grade Spanish class watched this movie and we all had churros! :)
I forgot how much I love this movie,it’s been years since I watched it, I recently watched it again and I truly still haven’t changed a thought about it,the book of life is the best hidden gem ❤❤
I'm so happy someone has recognized how beautiful this movie is! I remember seeing this movie with my dad and little sister when it first came out and I just fell in love with it! From the animation style, characters, plot, love sub-plot, and the Mexican folklore aspect of it all, it was just a huge blast for me!
I’m so excited to watch! this movie was a very big part of my childhood and culture growing up. I’m so glad it’s getting recognition, I love your videos! ❤❤
This movie right here. Fell in love the moment I watched it, Manolo, Joaquin and Maria will be a forever favorite My favorite song? “Heaven knows your name, I’ve been praying to have you come here by my side…” I love you too much But my favorite Spanish version? The same thing 😂😭
I know "the Book of Life" has already drawn TONS of comparisons to "Coco" and vice versa. However, this is something I couldn't ignore once I noticed it. At 11:54, the voice of Pepe, one of Manolo's mariachi friends, is voiced by Gabriel Iglesias, aka "Fluffy." He's a very famous comedian who also happens to be Mexican-American, and I love his storytelling-style jokes. Gabriel Iglesias voiced another side character in "Coco," the clerk who tells Miguel and his family why he got stuck in the Land of the Dead and how to return him to the Land of the Living.
I was a huge El Tigre fan back then and this movie directed by the creator of El Tigre did me a favor when I saw it the first time in theaters. Good times.
I love this movie, and I've always watched it in Spanish, so it surprised me that here they call her "la muerte" and in the Spanish dub is "la Catrina"
@@georgiedenburrito87 Catrina* yeah I know, what surprised me is that they didn't call her that in English, since la muerte is not even in English either
6 months late, but the name change is more of that La Muerte is based on Santa Muerte, or La Catrina, a folk saint who is supposed to be a matriarch of the Dead with catholic and native influence (I think from the Mexica deity Mictecaccihautl)
Wait till she hears there was supposed to be a second movie, but since it didn’t sell as how it was planned to… they stopped it. Instead they made a prequel- a serie: Maya and the three. The previous life of Manolo and Maria.
this movie holds so much nostalgia for me because it was one of the movies i was basically raised by. i was always surprised at how underrated it is even these days
I’m watching this again and I love the Book of life so so much it’s one of my comfort movies but listening to Diego Lucas voice (Manolo) it’s is so mesmerizing and literally heavenly to me ❤
This movie was just what I needed for younger me. It was my comfort film, my favourite film, that one film I'd go to watch, anybody who had never watched it clearly hasn't had a good life.
1) First of all it’s cat- how can I ignore cat? ITS. A. CAT! :D 💕 2) This color and styling looks so good on her! 3) This is honestly the best Guillermo del Toro movie and it deserves respect. 4) The humor is absolutely spot on. Everything that they made for comedy actually works and is funny. 5) THE SOUNDTRACK! The soundtrack is amazing and is on par with the Tarzan and Lion King soundtracks! Every song absolutely hits. I’m still upset we never got the full mariachi version of “If you think I’m sexy”, and the “I love you too much” scene was pure perfection. 6) Idk if it’s true but in my head canon, I like how Manolo doesn’t have a mustache/any facial hair. All the other “manly masculine family manly mans” all have mustaches. Meanwhile Manolo wants to be himself even if it isn’t what a stereotypical man should be. He cares more about following his heart vs suppressing it to please a public image. It really makes him stand out and show he’s different from everyone else. 7) The voice cast did an absolutely amazing job. Ron Pearlman as Xibalba and Ice Cube as the Candle Maker was so unexpected but they worked so well for their characters! They’re one of my favorites from this movie :) 8) I absolutely love that Joaquin isn’t a villain but instead just has more of a friendly rivalry/competition with Manolo that Xibalba makes more serious- he thickens the issues between the two when before Manolo and Joaquin just argued like brothers, and when they reunite again they’re excited like brothers missing eachother because they truly are brothers. When Manolo died, he was trying really hard not to cry when he had to break the news to Maria. You can hear his voice crack and he had to look down, close his eyes, and shake his head to stop his watery eyes. He actually wants Maria to mourn, but her father pushes the issues of her hurrying up and marrying Joaquin; Joaquin even told the General, who is Maria’s father: “General please now is not the tim-“ and the general cuts him off motions for Joaquin to stop talking which Joaquin respects because it’s an elder and the father of the girl he’s trying to marry. He even tried telling Maria she didn’t have to accept the proposal after Manolo’s death but she also cuts him off before he can finish talking. He knew it wasn’t right to take advantage of the situation and he doesn’t want Maria marrying him if she doesn’t want to. You see him hestitate when he wanted to mourn over Manolo and at the alter when Maria says “for San Angel, I do”. Even before we physically saw grown Maria, Joaquin compliments Manolo in his first bull fight before he goes to the arena that he’s happy that Manolo finally took bull fighting seriously because Joaquin knew Manolo was struggling with his identity and how it differs from the family legacy vs Joaquin who looked up to his father and his sacrifice, follow his father’s foot steps, and be exactly like him- as great as a hero as his dad if not better. Joaquin and Manolo were talking and even teasing eachother before the race to win Maria as adults: Joaquin: “We got some pretty big shadows to fill” Manolo: “Ha…huuuuge.” Joaquin: “Hey, brother, may the best man win Maria” You can hear it in his voice he doesn’t want to be competing with Manolo cause he cares about him, and impressing Maria is bittersweet since it hurts Manolo. Everything between Manolo and Joaquin was so heartfelt- they never had any ill will towards eachother even if they were both trying to win the same girl over. They easily could have made Joaquin vengeful and petty, but instead he respects both Maria and Manolo’s decision since he wants them to be happy, and he still loves them both. The trio stayed together regardless of what happened and they all still love, respect, support and care for eachother 🖤❤️💙 I will never comprehend how this movie is so criminally underrated.
I’ve had The Book of Life since I was a child. It came out when I was 4 or 5, so I wouldn’t have any memory of my first reaction to it, but my opinion now hasn’t changed. I loved, and still love this movie. I love all the songs in the movie, especially as a Hispanic person. I have a large Mexican background since I’m a direct child of Mexican immigrants, so this hits a little closer to home culture wise. Love the positive reaction of this movie. I think it's good metaphor. He's confident with the medal and can do amazing things, but when it's gone he's scared and can't do anything. Confidence is key; you can be the most skilled person ever, but without the confidence to put those skills to use, there's practically nothing.
I do like how in the end he gained confidence and was able to fight without the medal.
but it does give him a lot of courage also
I'm sad that Joaquin was neglected throughout this video, because there was still quite a bit of character to him.
Ayone ele have other theories?
i'm surprised she didn't know that song lol
I was like "oH THIs SONG" When it played I did not expect it
I love radiohead. He's the guy who sang creep
Even though I'm Very late i love how Manolo Is dedicated to Maria shes just so sweet
I used to be obsessed with this movie when I was younger, I’d watch it on repeat over and over, best movie I’ve ever watched, glad to see people are still watching this movie, and I’m glad u enjoyed it!

The song Manolo sings after the first bullfight when he says "im a creep" is Creep by Radiohead. It comes off very odd and misplaced but we love him for it it's okay 💕 I'm so glad you reacted to his masterpiece it's so fun to see people's reactions to GOOD underrated movies! I loved his cover of the song. I think it being a odd rendition is the point. Especially cause of the lyrics like “im a creep, I’m a weirdo” idk if it’s just me
@@nqvsli no I totally agree.
I think the song could have been good if he didn't do the chorus honestly
Because the lyrics FIT Manolo except for "I'm a creep" however to his father he is a weirdo, he doesnt belong and he IS in love with Maria. But I totally agree.
This is actually such an underrated movie and I love how you reacted to it. Props to you ❤❤
May i just say how every female character in this movie is just so iconic? Like, most of the main guys look like 🏋♂ (Actually just the main 3) and the girls are all so memorable and have such iconic and distinct designs, i love all of them, they all slay.
FACTS!!
Also a bit ironic
The romance in this movie it is just so cute. And Joaquim Is my favorite character he is so fun and his character development is great, his friendship with Manolo Is so sweet. I LOOOVE this movie.
PS: I had a major crush on La Muerte
Fax Joaquin is my favourite character to and he's definitely the best character in the movie.

TLDR;
This movie doesn't get nearly enough love and Disney is a cooperate hydra that will do anything for money.
Couldn’t have said it better
the culture of Hispanics (in this case, Mexico because of the holiday) is not so popular in cartoons, and as soon as it starts to be used in the plot of these cartoons, the cries about plagiarism immediately begin ((((these two beautiful animated masterpieces have a DIFFERENT plot, but the same concept, so what the hell is this а plagiarism?

"what can maria not do" i can answer that
she cant stop being the most iconic character in the whole movie
This is a little cute thing I found in this movie but at 27:30 to 27:34 when Manolo is seen coming back from the dead there is a heart shaped light around him showing that the love he has for Maria is so strong. It’s soooo cute❤❤😊
This is my mom’s favorite movie, and I absolutely love the soundtrack in it, I mean at this point I might as well learn the Apology song on ukulele, haha

But my favorite Spanish version?
The same thing 😂😭
I’m actually surprised that the book of life is so underrated. It’s a good film and a good story
I love this movie one of my favorites growing up and it sounds even more romantic in Spanish and manolo is literally the standard
Manolo went beyond the standard where can i find a man like this? 😭
I was a huge El Tigre fan back then and this movie directed by the creator of El Tigre did me a favor when I saw it the first time in theaters. Good times.
Fun fact, I’m from Mexico and I respect my culture❤❤❤
I love this movie, and I've always watched it in Spanish, so it surprised me that here they call her "la muerte" and in the Spanish dub is "la Catrina"
real! I watched this in spanish but my brother always watched it in english because he doesn’t know english and i was like “😮”
La Catrina is her actual name in Mexican/South American folklore lol
I LOVE HOW THEY PUT MY FAVORITE SONG CREEP BY RADIOHEAD IN A PERFECT MOVIE LIKE THIS ONE
this movie holds so much nostalgia for me because it was one of the movies i was basically raised by. i was always surprised at how underrated it is even these days
ITS. A. CAT! :D 💕
2) This color and styling looks so good on her!
They’re one of my favorites from this movie :)
8) I absolutely love that Joaquin isn’t a villain but instead just has more of a friendly rivalry/competition with Manolo that Xibalba makes more serious- he thickens the issues between the two when before Manolo and Joaquin just argued like brothers, and when they reunite again they’re excited like brothers missing eachother because they truly are brothers.
Joaquin and Manolo were talking and even teasing eachother before the race to win Maria as adults:
Joaquin: “We got some pretty big shadows to fill”
Manolo: “Ha…huuuuge.”
Joaquin: “Hey, brother, may the best man win Maria”
You can hear it in his voice he doesn’t want to be competing with Manolo cause he cares about him, and impressing Maria is bittersweet since it hurts Manolo. The trio stayed together regardless of what happened and they all still love, respect, support and care for eachother 🖤❤️💙
I will never comprehend how this movie is so criminally underrated.
Wow that must have taken a long time to type
No kidding 😂
I’ve had The Book of Life since I was a child. It came out when I was 4 or 5, so I wouldn’t have any memory of my first reaction to it, but my opinion now hasn’t changed.
