- Hey guys! It's Danny & Niamh back with a brand new series to react to. We will be reacting to Shōgun. This video is our reaction to the first episode of this new series.
It did not disappoint - we are hooked on this one. Feudal Japan looks and feels amazing, there are some really intriguing characters, and the plot is set up nicely. We can't to see more and we hope you enjoy our reactions through this series.
We will be releasing episode two this Monday, 22nd April, and we will be continuing with releasing a new reaction to this series every Monday thereafter.
Thank you all so much for watching, feel free to leave your thoughts down below! We appreciate all the amazing love and support that you give the channel.

Best show on television. For me, I think maybe the best show ever! It gets so good. I enjoyed your reaction, so I subscribed to watch episodes again. I hope you enjoy the show!
Loving it so far 💙
If you liked this and it's attention to detail you will also like Black Sails. It works as a prequel to Treasure Island and has a mix of real and fictional pirates and real and fictional events all tied together with stupendous writing and impeccable acting. Not a wasted word or scene.
1:19 "history's a big thing." -Danny
"history's... you know what? it's pretty long." -Niamh
getting longer every day. 😆
Seppuku is normally its an individual responsibility unless ordered otherwise, so the fact he volunteered himself and his son without his lords word shows how much he acts without thinking.
Rewatching the series multiple times is highly recommended, as there're so many stories and messages layered in almost all of the scenes.
It was indeed a brutal time in Japan, but it _was_ a brutal time in nearly every part of the world. Japan was enjoying almost a century of relative peace, where the wars fought was incredibly violent. When Toranaga's vassal spoke out of turn during the meeting, it could've easily sparked a 4-vs-1 war that would've killed tens -- or even hundreds -- of thousands of people. The _seppuku_ of a "mere" two individuals would've been a small price to pay. But it really *was* a sad affair.
It's notable that Japan's line of _verifiable_ emperors started about a few decades after the Roman Empire left the British Isles. The line of "legendary" emperors however (those whose reigns weren't properly documented) started around the same time the Ancient Greek civilization started.
This was a very violent period in Japanese history. Shortly before the start of this show, Japan was for the first time unified as one nation. Japan tried to invade Korea and China but failed so returned back to Japan and that's when all the infighting started again. Having peace is really hard when you are surrounded by people who crave more power.
Enjoy! This is an incredible series.
Oh, I love your guys’ reactions, but you haven’t touched anything so heavy and dark as this. I hope you are both prepared for some real heartwrenching stuff, but I’m also glad to see you here, as you have some of the most heartfelt and genuine perspectives ❤
Thank you so much for joining us 💙
Your commentaries are really insightful. I want the 2nd episode reaction now.
Oh good!!!! You're doing Shogun!!🎉🎉🎉
Found ur channel watching other reactors to this show and you guys are fun to watch.
I hope you guys get to finish this limited masterpiece series.
it's the best of 2024 so far.
This show has blown me away so far. Glad you guys are check it out
Shinto is the ancient nature religion of Japan. It primarily worships local spirits called kami. Ancestor worship is key for the upper class. Many also worship forms of Buddhism. Amida Buddhism is a popular form. Zen Buddhism combined with ancestor worship is popular for upper class men. Deity in Buddhism is complicated. When the Portuguese first showed up, the Japanese understood Catholicism as a variant of Amida Buddhism ;-) This made it much easier for it to make progress in "conversion of commoners by conversion of liege lord". In the decades after this show, Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular will fall out of political favor in Japan.
You mean in that era. It was banned. Also, Zen Buddhism shaped all aspects of arts, war (archery, sword fight), cuisine, tea ceremony, poetry (Haiku), calligraphy, drawing, gardening
Blackthorn was more of a Privateer, kind of a sailing mercenary.
The conutries they are contracted to sail against did count them as pirates though as an insult, which is funny because they were mostly pirate hunters too.
30:06 "🥶" -Niamh
30:30 that was a gasp!
Hi ! Just found your channel.. I was jonzin' for more Shogun reactions .. I'm so happy to have found you ! you guys are so entertaining to watch I had to Sub ! fun fact.. " ANJIN " means PILOT... and since the first episode of a series is ussually called .. " PILOT " ! I can't wait to follow you all on your journey thru this most amazing show!
Thank you for joining us on our journey 💙💙
25:12...Guys, you're reading too much into things. Blackthorne didn't plan to make the psychopath lord climb down the cliff so he'd fall & die. He just read the situation correctly and took advantage of the natural course of events.
At the time, the home countries of the Netherlands and Great Britain had concluded an agreement to integrate their respective Asian outposts. However, Dutch local commanders opposed to the agreement captured all British trading posts in Indonesia and tortured and killed them, including dismemberment. This incident forced the British to pull the plug on Southeast and East Asia and concentrate on colonial management in India.
12:17 Omi, the local Lord and head of the village, told everyone to stay back, away from Blackthorne. The man who got beheaded chose to ignore his lord's warning and went up to Blackthorne to pray for him instead. This was hugely disrespectful towards Omi, who decapitated him in response.
It's a little different in the book and 1980 miniseries, where Omi decapitates one of the villagers for having refused to bow to him on multiple occasions. Basically respect, or at least the outward appearance of respect, is very important.
26:40 Blackthorne considered his captain's suicide as cowardly because he abandoned his men and took the easy way out. When he saw Yabushige preparing to end his own life, he recognized that because Yabushige was about to die anyway, it was him taking his fate into his own hands rather than desperately trying to cling to life. Basically Yabushige faced his own looming death with dignity, the captain didn't.
From what I read, Tadayoshi's offence wasn't speaking out of turn, but steping into the main hall and starting to draw his sword.
Later when we see Hiromatsu at the village talking to Yabushige he just gripped his sword, but didn't draw it. Just gripping the sword by the handle suggests he means business, but so long as he doesn't draw it, the situation doesn't escalate but his point is made
Technically not a pirate, but a privateer. Pirates raid for themselves. Privateers raid for a government. The Toranaga actor, Hiroyuki Sanada is Executive producer as well.
Good reaction. Not too OTT but some very amusing noises from Niamh. Have a subscription. This is the best drama for quite a few years.
12:17 "what the f*ck was that?" -Niamh 🫢
Nice one guys - food for thought - Game of Thrones wasn't based on a true story - but it WAS based - loosely - on the political machinations of medieval England - so GoT had rules to follow, just like this...
17:45 "he has the poshest accent ive ever heard"
really?? he sounds like a straight up pirate 😭
After watching this with you I decided to watch it as well and you know what I realized, the main character sounds exactly like Richard Burton, If I closed my eyes I'd swear it was him
Don't know if it's already on your radar, or if you've seen it already, but would be so sick to see you guys react to The Bear! :)
Great choice of shows to react to!
They tried so hard to save Rodriguez because he was a pilot which was a very valuable skill and hard to replace. If he had been just a deckhand it would have been tough titty for him.
What is the link for your patreon? I want to watch more videos
