  • A week or so back I made a video on Manaless champions and their impact on League of Legends. So I decided to talk about another category of champions that also draw some attention: Brainless Champions! The topic of discussion for today will be whether or not they are outdated and need to be reworked, or are essential to the game just as much as complex champions.

      I used to one trick garen for years. I'll be the first to say that I don't want him to be as brainless as he is, because if he's more skill expressive, then I can be rewarded more for being good at him. It's never very reassuring to know that you main a champion which can't even sustain a decent winrate in challenger because the abilities of said champion are too simple.

    Well, I think simple champions are good for the game so long as they have playstyles that encourage interaction. Malphite I think is in dire need of something that forces him to do ANYTHING in the landing phase besides spam his targeted Q and run away until you’re 30% HP and then he can point blank R you. Nasus (other than E max Comet) has at least a win condition that puts him at some sort of risk and Garen’s passive has CLEAR counterplay in the landing phase.

    • @hqhuy931
      @hqhuy931 3 года назад +17

    • @Poxyquotl
      @Poxyquotl 3 года назад +52

      @@hqhuy931 except he has really good self peel tools? His Q steals MS and his E nukes attack speed, I’m not saying he doesn’t have BAD matchups, I think it’s fine playing Renekton into him or some one else with both sustain and mobility, but realistically you only ever have Kill pressure before he gets an armor item or two. Most of the time once he has tabis bramble, good luck ever killing him in lane+ the utility on his Ult combined with the fact that he’s an immovable rock in lane means he simultaneously prevents you from getting off the ground and carrying and is still extremely useful while on low resources himself. I’m just not a big fan of the champ in it’s current state, I think it’s GOOD that there’s simple champions, especially ones designed for autofill, I just don’t think his play style is very healthy for the game.

    • @hqhuy931
      @hqhuy931 3 года назад +11

      @@Poxyquotl i think simple champs are a great way to learn aspects such as itemization, macro, map awareness, warding and such and not have to worry about mechanics. I think mal is an example of what a tank really is: explosive engage, strong mid game, bulky and tough and able to stand his own. I hate mal matchup up top as well, but he's more commonly found support and most top laners prefer fighters rather than tanks anyways

    • @harrysliyoko8809
      @harrysliyoko8809 3 года назад +28

      @Paris Hart You can poke him a little bit if your champ can do and if the Garen stands too far back he misses gold and exp, there is the counterplay .

    • @Dingdong2730
      @Dingdong2730 3 года назад +14

      @Paris Hart Constantly trading into him? Garen is lowkey pretty weak early on, at least compared to his peers. Garen's sustain early on is the only thing he has got going for him along with waveclear.
      The passive is pretty shit in the earlygame, Darius with the highest base health regen in the game basically has the same regen as Garen with his passive, so it isnt like its massively unfair to play against, at least I dont feel that way.
      The worst lanes in top I think are champions that you cant interact with as a melee champion, that would be stuff like Malphite, Tahm Kench, Akali and Urgot, where Malphite and Akali interact with you like they are ranged champions, but they are not. Tahm Kench and Urgot are just massively unfair to play against for all melee champs since if they hit you with 1 ability in the early levels, your lane is over pretty much done and only if you play some hyper scaling splitpusher like Jax, Nasus or Fiora do you ever have light at the end of the tunnel of actually winning a 1v1 if you wait till 20 minutes.
      In higher elo champions like Gangplank and Jayce also become uninteractive laners, but at least they are absolutely useless champions if you set them behind early and dont have to respect their poke.

      Overloaded champs are bad if their kit is too broad. Kaisa is overloaded but she still has to run to your face and unloading her CDs and right click you she just has more methods to do that than the average adc and all of them are weaker then adc with 1 strong tool but combined are good meanwhile yone is overloaded and bad because not only he has the best trade tool in the game(his e) but not only that he has a shield, aoe cc and massive mixed damage. If a garen gets ahead you can quit toplane because he can't fuck up he will literally run you down but being a simple champ you can avoid getting stomped because he can do one thing meanwhile kat has a lot of ways to stomp you but she can fuck up really hard even when ahead. A fed Kata that jumps into 3 people that have at least 1 hard cc has to avoid it or even she dies no matter how fed she is if you see a fed garen running towards the same 3 people they just have to run.

    I think Soraka is misunderstood. Her Q isn't used as "chip damage" (I mean - it's not it's main use). It's actually used to gain the benefits of Rejuvenation and heal both yourself and your allies a lot better. Soraka's healing from W becomes A LOT stronger if she just hits her Q first. This; I saw the list and was immensely confused why one of the highest skillcap champs in the game is on the list. Because Q is PnC ? Okay but Vlad's E and R are much more difficult to understand and optimize; if you dont read the tooltips and practice, you wont be playing Vlad well.
      The reason a 1s buff on his Q has a major impact on playrate/power is because the cooldown is already extremely low.
      Kai'sa E cooldown is no lower than 10, and she doesn't build a ton of CDR. Vlad Q gets as low as 4, and he stacks TONS of CDR, hitting 40%/60-70+ AH very early, bringing the CD down to like 2.4s; compounded by the fact that the ability has a "stack" mechanic, so its more like lowering the CD from 10s (6) to 8s (4.8).

A word he could have used to describe the champions in the same light but less negative is beginner friendly however Soraka is not and just picking a Enchanter as a starting point of learning Enchanters is not a good idea since they are mostly diverse in of themselves with them excelling in one area or another

    well- easy to play doesn't mean easy to win with. (keep that in mind) I would argue that some seeming simplistic champions make even more use out of certain concepts. Like a twisted fate vs Syndra matchup where both players (including the tf here) has to understand how to tether in and out of range play around key cooldowns-(trying to abuse syndras mana costs) and also play around wave clear advantages - when to last hit a minion - punishing mistakes calling a bluff when tf walks up with gold card if syndra thinks the jungler isn't nearby (as some champions with point-click abilities can also make use of input buffering- thus extending the threat range where normally syndra would have the range advantage) and champions like Vladimir or yi has to be patient with when they choose to dive into the enemy team- they can easily die if the get stunned -silenced etc. (yes they have the ability to go untargetable but that's exactly the reason why can dive) Because unlike (say zed) (I'm using vlad as an example here) your engage range is short and you don't move in and out of a fight quick enough to punish a single miss positioned target. Instead, a vlad player will look to dive into multiple targets and deal as much damage as possible while trying to avoid cc- the vlad will most likely start the combo off with R and that is when he's vulnerable. If he doesn't do enough- he would have wasted his flash for the engage and his opportunities to make a play again becomes significantly smaller. (the key difference being windows of opportunity when comparing vlad to Zed) I'm strictly talking about the champion's design and the philosophies they follow. I would argue that a champion like vlad - making a mistake is easier but your rewards are much greater. Therefore - i wouldn't say he's mechanically harder to play at all- but there's a skill you learn when playing both of these champions- seeing windows of opportunity to punish a player or team's mistakes and how often you get to do so. I just think that in certain levels of play - certain playstyles don't get enough respect or recognition.

      By giving them some qualities that build towards skill expression without throwing in mechanics, a prime example of this being Poppy: she has a very streamlined kit with no remarkable combo potential whatsoever, however since her E is conditional, her ult is a playmaking skillshot and her W is partially a "parry", Poppy still has a degree of skill, most specifically, knowledge expression and decision making. Besides, people who complain about Nasus forget how railroaded (and thus predictable, hence counterable) his playstyle is, they're simply too much of a bunch of morons to figure out that rather than practicing SiCk KoMbOs on Riven, Irelia or whatever infinite dashes button spamming abomination they like to play they'd rather need to learn how to freeze a lane, because the skill in this game is all about having a good macro, not mashing buttons.

His autos are different than every other champion in the game so his q auto resets he makes a choice on. His w is knowing how long you should hold it and who you need to hit the true damage one.

Of course, warwick runs at you, presses q and ults you melee, but he also can use e and lauch ult from distance to neutralize a target and fear the rest of the team. Sett can pull you in, bonk you and ult to keep bonking, but he can also use q to get near the frontlane and ult into the team to use e and stun as much people as posible. Champions with low skill floor but high sky cealing are great, because you pick them up as you start in the game and as you improve as a player so does your champ because now you can think of new ways to use the same tools.

    It’s fun and all but when tanks start doing a 1000+ true damage I get a little annoyed. Seriously have a grudge against Olaf, I’m a tank support main and he’s immune to cc, so I can’t peel him and I can’t just try to get him to attack me either because he’ll chunk my health, especially when he is ahead. Which presents the problem of how do a deal with a cc immune, true damage dealing tank from killing my adc? I just have to hit exhaust and pray my adc can out play a little because there are not a lot of adcs that can stat check him. Like with nasus at least I can stun him, knock him backwards, root, slow, charm, transform etc etc to keep him off of my adc. But Olaf just moves forward and there is very little counter play besides having better stats. Which I don’t like because if you have one lane that’s having a rough game he can just farm gold from them and get the stats necessary to just steam roll the other lanes. I just think since adcs have a natural weakness to melee champions that maybe they or their supporters would have so kind of counter play, but all I can think of is playing lulu and dumping all of my abilities on my adc to boost their stats as high as possible while using exhaust on the enemy stat checker so they have a chance of winning the stat check. But as a tank main, I normally don’t play lulu, how is an Alistar or Leona suppose to keep him from just walking up to my adc and killing them. You need such good vision control in order to have an noticeable impact on that matchup and you and your adc needs to keep an eye on that vision. And when playing from behind in the mid-late game sometimes makes it kind of an int to face check so much jungle, even as a tank support.
    With other stat checkers like nasus or garen I can cc like I’m supposed to and it makes it more of a team game again where I feel like I can help out in a fight. But a cc immune, true damage dealing tanky fighter is just to much to deal with if they get ahead but at the same Time, playing jungle is a nightmare, I have been autofilled jungler a couple of times and those games are always brutal because when you’re a support main get auto fill in the jungle, you know that’s going to be a hard game and having a champ where I can theoretically just stat check is kinda nice.

    Essential yes if the things you learn on them are transferrable to other champions in their class or role
    Example: Ashe, imo she's the best marksman to learn adc on. You'll learn that you are squishy, that distance is your advantage, tanks are your best friends, that you get better with items and to keep the edgy Talon away from you at all costs. If you then wish to go further and improve with her she has a macro tool and a teamfighting ultimate, if she bored you to tears you can pick up any other marksmen and all the stuff you learned on Ashe applies to them (even Samira)
    For mages: Annie and Neeko
    For fighters: Pantheon and Vi
    For tanks: Sejuani and Amumu
    For supports: Leona and Soraka/Sona
    For assassins: None in LoL I learnt the assassin playstyle in Smite through Bastet (in summary she's an ultbot) and that experience was transferrable across games (she still needs a rework though)
    If a "brainless" champ leaves you having to start from square one on another champ in their class or role then they're a failure and need to be looked at (Udyr, Tryndamere, Garen...my bias is showing isn't it, also curious that these three have a tendency to have unhealthy levels of bloated stats I know the reason why but hmm)

If you look at the change between a champion's overall winrate and their winrate if we only count games with 50+ prior games played on the champion, then the top of the list is mostly "brainless" or "easy" champions.
    The specific champions change every patch because their winrates are really susceptible to meta changes (when the one thing you do is worse this patch or your counterpicks get more popular you just lose more, you don't have 1000 other tools to win) but the overall trend is true

    I just wanna say that reading that list, feels like every champ belongs there except for Vlad. Idk I might be biased but there is so much skill expression on Vlad I just don't think he feels right to have here. Just watch Elite500, no challenger OTP on Nasus or Malphite or Udyr (champs who really are braindead) could really make any outplays, or most definitely not on the magnitude he does.
    Edit: Rewatched, just gotta say that regardless of my opinion on Vlad, Darius 100% belongs here. To take Vlad as an example, he has outplay potential on a baseline level with his pool and quick combos. Darius has outplay potential literally only by flashing his Q in. For crying out loud, the champ can literally only play the laning phase one way and use every single ability in the same order every single time he goes for a trade. This video just feels very biased to me after thinking this through.

    • @remito7839
      @remito7839 3 года назад +3

      Vlad can be surprisingly difficult. But he probably lands on the list because his W makes him nearly invulnerable for a few seconds and his Q can easily heal about 1k hp per cast late game (while having about 2 sec CD).

      @@remito7839 @Remito Yeah but does being a hypercarry omega late game battle mage automatically make a champ braindead? Because if that is the case Cassiopeia is braindead and pisseasy. Or is it because his mechanics don't come in landing skillshots and instead come in extremely quick and hard to perform combos? If that is the case, Ryze can go on this list and while Riven might not be a battlemage, she should also be considered easy and braindead. Sure, you might say a champ that has mobility automatically has skill expression, outplay potential and a multitude of ways to approach situations, but I don't think that it is fair to say that having a really, *really* low range kit with 0 mobility is "braindead". You're still going to have to find the flanks or not play the game for 5 minutes every time you make a play and finding a flank means you have to use your brain no? To recognize front to back is not the forte of your champ and find a workaround for that? I like Vars, a lot, I think he makes very high quality content but I feel this video missed the mark on a multitude of levels.
      Also to specifically reply to this: "and his Q can easily heal about 1k hp per cast late game" Not quite. Crimson Rush Q can very easily heal for 1K+, especially when on low HP and even more likely with Spirit Visage. Crimson Rush is on a 5-7 second cooldown for the part of the game where Vlad is strong. Think that puts it more honest and fair. He can still heal 400-600 (depending on items and Visage, which is kinda shitty to buy on mages nowadays due to lackluster AP in mage legendaries) but consider how easy and reliable it is to reduce that by 40-60% and it doesn't look all that daunting. He still deals crazy damage lategame which is why it feels so annoying to play against him, because you want MR so he doesn't oneshot you, damage so you can have a shot at oneshotting him and healing reduction to salvage the game in case he doesn't die to the oneshot. Nevertheless, for reasons I explained and more, I don't think he belongs on this list and I think Vars made a mistake (probably due to personal bias as Vlad is notoriously good on top against certain melee champs especially with jungle assistance) including him on this video. It happens, it just feels wrong.

      @@tylerg8314 I play Vlad too. Doesn't make a champ braindead that they have a single target, targeted nuke. Don't think you can argue that Camille for example is a braindead champion, even though she has a higher damage autoattack reset, movement speed giving point and click nuke. Having spells of this nature doesn't make champs braindead, or overpowered. Or take a look at Anivia and Syndra. Granted, Syndra's is an ultimate ability, but they both also have point and click nukes and there's no argument for any of them being braindead.
