I've had a Green Aracari for 5 years now. I got him when he was 4 months old. I love him dearly! He's just a miniature of a full sized toucan in every way, except his beak is serrated like no other bird. Everyone that visits thinks he's the coolest bird in the house. He definitely attacks strangers and he's hot and cold with certain family members without provoke. He poops every 5 minutes and he needs to fly around the house twice daily and he poops everywhere! Toucans don't like any other bird species and we have 4 different types of parrots and he could kill them with the tip of his beak. He loves cuddles when he's not hyper. I live is So. Calif. so I have his separate outdoor cage that I can put him in almost daily- year round. Let me tell you the cage clean-up is what gets old. Papaya and mango dried onto everything is very difficult to clean. If you don't clean out his cage at least every other day, the smell is gross!!! He's a picky eater and he gets tired of different fruit and wastes so much of it and I'm constantly trying to figure out what to feed him and have to have papaya, mango, kiwi and banana on constant ripening rotation. I will never have another toucanet in my home.

Thank you so much for this. I am pinning to the top since so many people asked more about aracaris. I don't want them to think I am recommending them, but they are "easier to manage" than the larger toucans. So I appreciate you sharing your experience to deter others from making a decision they may regret.

It's people like you in the comments and those who share their toucans with us via vids (Bird Tricks, 2can.TV, and anyone else that I can find) that I will live vicariously through! As much as I adore and respect these birds, I do not believe I have what it takes to go out and rescue/adopt one. I would only, and I mean ONLY, if there was not another option for the bird. For now, I will just watch those who are willing to share their toucans' life with us! Thank you for the story. You gave me another reason to stick with parrots/parrolets. They are something I know and understand!

I spent over 7 years volunteering at a big cat sanctuary and spent about a zillion hours telling people how NO ONE should ever own one as a pet. Doesn't matter how much love and money you throw at most exotics. It took us thousands of years to domesticate a handful of species and people are injured by domestic animals every second of every day. I raised the gorgeous lion in my picture from 4 1/2 weeks old and spent 40 or more hours a week working with him but I never did anything with him alone and there were many times I didn't go into his enclosure because he was having an off day. I was trained for over a year before getting the chance to work with a cat closely, and 7 more years learning alongside him but I still wouldn't dream of owning a big cat as my pet. People need to stick with domestic animals.

Well, majority of the time and the VAST majority of toucans are basically "evil", in that their main enjoymenet of life is causing others harm, mostly other species. So, most toucans aren't really fulfilled unless they get to bully & even actually hurt others.
It's one of the strangest creatures and probably one of the best examples of evolution VS creation, something so sensitive & yet so "evil" wouldn't be created, but through evolution their bizarre existance can of course be explained rationally. I don't think they are evil but I use that word in quotations to simplify their behaviour for human & most animal understandings.

It was amazing tho how at peace he was when she got there to hold him and love him one last time 💙💔she did an amazing job loving and caring for him all she did everything she could for him💞💞💞💞 and oh man I can’t imagine the exotic vet bills left behind for her to pay now 😞😕ugh :( I really hope some of the cost is offset because of all the knowledge Rocco helped the exotic vet hospital to learn and the advanced mental he can bring now to other captive diabetics toccans that he was the first one to wear the glucose monitor for a tocan. And that she donated his body to them for further study to help learn and help save future toucan in captivity with similar diagnosis.

    “Tea for the Toucan”
One theory is that in their natural habitat Toucans drink from richly coloured streams and pools of water where there are high levels of tannins from decaying leaves, bark and other vegetable matter. The tannins help bind the iron found in the birds diet.

    • @brettbirdguy
      @brettbirdguy 3 года назад +6

      YEASS!!!!
      Iron:
(Fun facts to help you understand why Toucans and other species of birds have trouble with to much Iron building up in their bodies.. *** PLUS: Bonus clues: hinting to why wild Toucans drinking water collecting in trees are better adapted to relieving some of that built up Iron.. It's the * Tannins and Phytates * leaching out of the tree bark into the water they consume, becoming natural * Chelators * binding to Iron and thus helping them out with the removal of excess Iron..)
*MEDICAL TEXT & LINK: BELOW - SCROLL TO AVIAN TOXICOLOGY..*
      IRON:
Increased hepatic iron storage or iron storage disease (ISD) is a serious condition noted in captive birds especially in some species belonging to families Paradiseadae (birds-of-paradise), Ramphastidae (toucans), and Sturnidae (starlings) (Pavone et al., 2014).
Avian species that have been evolved to tolerate relatively low iron content in their diet have very efficient iron absorption and do not downregulate their iron absorption when body stores are saturated or on feeding of high-iron containing diets (Klasing et al., 2012).
Many commercial diets intended for captive birds have been formulated using the nutritional requirements of poultry and are not optimal for the low-iron tolerating species. In addition, the use of animal byproducts significantly affects the nutritional interactions and bioavailability of iron. Absorption of iron from animal byproducts (heme-based iron sources) may be three times higher than that from nonheme products containing equivalent iron concentrations.
Thus excessive dietary iron, or nutritional interactions causing increased iron bioavailability and genetically or physiologically regulated increased iron uptake in sensitive species are all contributing factors to this condition (Cork, 2000; Sheppard, 2002).
A diet containing 50-100 mg/kg iron on a dry matter basis has been recommended for sensitive avian species.
Prophylactically, testing the iron content of the ingredients, choosing ingredients with low bioavailability of iron, and feeding a low-iron diet with natural chelators such as tannins, phytates and fiber might be useful.
Treatment includes dietary modification to minimalize iron intake by feeding a low-iron diet; reducing dietary vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, which increase the availability of iron in a diet; and by adding tannin-rich or phytate-rich ingredients, such as oak bark tea rather than normal drinking water, which reduce iron availability.

For a while there I was really interested in owning a mynah bird. I really wanted one. Even have photos of me holding one. But then i read over and over how they poop like a hawk/eagle. Basically a huge squirt of liquid yuck that landed on the walls and dripped down....being the same (99% animal carer-cleaner) I decided nope. My hands are in enough poo with the 3 parrots that own me.

So glad you shared this to show people how difficult it is to keep these amazing birds! People need to know! Also, they are about $15,000, so that may also deter people from keeping them. Don't get me wrong, they are wonderful, but it's not very fair to the bird, we just can't provide the proper care like you can 😆😁😂😃😃

Hello; I had a Toucan for 18 years(Red Keel Billed) named Bosco. I was extremely fortunate to have one of the best Avian Vets in the USA about an hour from my South Florida home. The best food for soft billed birds is from Dr Harrison(pellets created for soft billed birds) Please do not feed a Toucan grapes, watermelon and similar fruits. The best fruit for a Toucan is Papaya. The pet store I found my Toucan was feeding grapes and watermelon to Bosco and had calcium deposits on his blue feet and his beak also was deteriorating. After I fed Bosco Harrison’s special soft billed pellets and Papaya all his problems with his beak and feet went away(especially from Papayas benefits). No grapes or watermelon because of the high water content and not dense enough vitamin and minerals. Dr Harrison told me at the time that my Toucan was the longest living in captivity because of how I changed his diet and added the pellets to his diet. I miss him daily. Best of luck with your incredible beautiful bird.
