I feel the need to address some of these comments to hopefully cut down on some of the misinformation seeing as the video is gaining traction. My sister is not a bird person (obviously) so yes she doesn't quite understand his body language and how to approach him. However, I obviously do. Just watch a few of my videos to get an idea about that. Placing his beak on or around hands or to touch things is not out of the ordinary and is NOT biting. Toucans do not have hands and therefore use their bills a lot to feel or learn about things and their environment. just because he's 'biting' does not indicate aggression with toucans. These are gentle grasps. The snapping, however, was more aggressive. At no point was he forced to do anything he wasn't willing to do. If he was uncomfortable he would have simply jumped to the other part of the room. That being said, he was mildly uncomfortable and I was aware of this and wanted to push his limits in a safe space with someone I knew I could trust. His general calm demeanor and personal story would make him a great bird to do public demonstrations with and I want to get him comfortable with being a little outside of his comfort zone and socialized to strange people because theres even more of that in public.
There was about an hour of him sitting with us with no interaction from her before the video and after the video he continued spending time with her and eventually even let her pet him for quite a while.
Parrot body language does not completely transfer to toucans. Toucans are generally more brave and assertive. Anyways, hope that makes some sense to you guys and explains his behavior a little better!

The beak was in pretty rough shape in T-Pacs first vid, but I think a better nutrition and the owner applying oil to the beak (I think he said coconut) helped it repair itself. When birds beaks look like that, it's usually because they don't have a good surface to rub it against. If it's concrete, it can do some damage but good at remove giant flakes so one or two in a cage seems to be fine but I like using a long softwood perch since it seems to buffs a lot of the beak damage out.

Criz yeh, its ignorant to the initial disability; but there are also plenty of autistic people I’ve known through the years who also really don’t get upset, or offended when others use the title to reference something. In fact I have a couple close friends with Asperger’s syndrome; and one actually uses the label about himself frequently, to poke fun at his own goofs. It all really depends on the company, and what they deem as humor; vs what offends them. Personally I agree it’s rather vulgar when specific peoples or inabilities are mocked among a public audience, in a casual entertainment video; of course I also think its a waste of time trying to mend peoples commentary through social media, when 90% of the time the people who speak up often become the butt of a joke in an endless sea of trolls lol.

People still use it because it was used for so long to essentially call people stupid, people still use it out of habit and in their mind aren't thinking "autistic people are stupid" they're just thinking "this person, animal, etc. is stupid." Nec, we are talking about birds here. They don't just bite you because they feel threatened, they also bite you to fuck with you amongst other things. They are cheeky, complex and many have the intelligence of a young child. And toucans can be pretty damn vicious.
Birds will bite, that's just the way it is. I've only had one bird so far that has never really bitten me in any serious way and that is a outlier. Even my best friend for 31 years, Nerd bird, would bite but for him it was fear or pain. There was almost always a reason I could understand and he drew blood most times when he did. We absolutely trusted each other so if needed I'd take a bad bite to protect him or someone from him, but it didn't happen often. Lurch was scared to death and mad at the world for taking his old man freind away. He wouldn't even give a warning first, just right to a quick bad bite. It took 5 years to fully earn his trust and he finally was happy and would give plenty if warnings before he bit and wouldn't try as hard because he decided he liked me. Dobby was only shown love and respect his whole life and waz fully socialized. He refuses to bite and will back away or bluff first. The worst he's given me is a very hard pinch when he was fully wound up and it was obvious he'd react. Tupac just wasn't having it and trying his best to say I'm not sure about you so back off and let me decide if you're worthy of my trust. Luckily he's a gentle soul so he just clamps and snaps, plus a threatening noise to make her go away. Like he said he needs time to get used to her and he'll let her interact more as he observes her only doing things that are good and not hurting anyone in his flock. You have to read their body language and attitude before you do anything or bad things can happen. Obviously Brock showed him he was a good being and a trustworthy friend right away. They choose who they choose and it's a honor they bestow on us.

You certainly can ask animals for something. You have to give them something as a reward for the behavior you're looking for. You ignore them, within limits, for behavior you don't want. Keep reinforcing the behavior you want with rewards, and soon they'll give you what you ask any time.

the thing that was threatening to the bird was that there was a new person in his environment, and the owner was doing a terrible job of slowly introducing them.
