What a wonderful bird and wonderful story. Yes, Hymie trained so quickly because he is intelligent, but your patience, clarity, and sensitivity to him were essential, particularly in that you immediately sought to make a relationship with him. @jedimasterpickle3 4 года назад +9

There was a Hyacinth for a long time at my local bird store where a lot of birds my parents have had over the years (including my current bird of 23 years). It was always a highlight of the trip to play with him. Like Hymie in this video, this macaw really liked going on people's shoulders. So I would rarely pick him up and just play with him instead. Eventually though I figured I could retain control by gripping both of his feet. Eventually he was sold, and I hope he's happy. He was extremely friendly and playful, but needed a firm hand to set boundaries. Always thought Hyacinths were a lot of fun, but given how huge they are, how much they cost, and how long they live, I would never get one myself.

That said, I’d love to major in Cognitive Ethology and study Parrots, so it’d be a great excuse to work with them and advocate for their welfare.

Great vid. We have a Green Wing and yep he was a shoulder rusher too....trained him and now he doesn't even feel comfortable up there after 3yrs.....he likes to stay on forearms....still working to get him to be on your hand with thumb over one foot....some success there, always a work in progress. Anyway, lots of people think they want the big birds......maybe you could do videos on how hard they really are. Like how much they eat, how quickly they destroy $30+ toys, how needy they get when bored, how noisy they can be when bored or even just crazy noisy they are when happy. Don't forget the messes they make...and don't forget big bird equals big poop and lots of it. Also how about how smart, mischievous, and manipulating they can really be. When our GW is bored and wants to play with the other birds like our cockatiel, he will go let him out of his cage. How about how quirky they can be as individuals, if we don't change out one of our GW stands poop papers down below it, he will pull the papers off himself and throw them around. Im sure big bird owners have lots of fun(?)quirky bird stories. All that said he is a member of the family and we couldn't be without him......but some days he pushes that pretty hard....🤦

    • @pixie8070
      @pixie8070 4 года назад +7

Tech Lid News I would say African greys are easier to handle than macaws are by a long shot.
Macaws are known to have behavioral issues if not socialized properly and can do a lot more damage they also have pretty annoying diets.
I own a B&G and he is far more energetic destructive and harder to train than any African grey I’ve met.
I am of the school of thought that people should pick a bird that fits their lifestyle not a beginner bird that they don’t want in the first place.
Do your research and join a training class with your baby bird and often times you will be a far better owner than most people in the parrot community.
On the flip side though. You should be 100% sure you can handle a hyacinth macaw. It’s a 10-24 thousand dollar bird.

I cannot get over the way you transform the lives of these birds. In the hands of others, they might not even make it, but with you, they thrive and I believe they fall in love. Anyway, they are so smart and you pull it out of them. Brava!
Ps. How will you be able to give him back...my heart is mush where animals are concerned! I love them and my heart breaks when I no longer have them. Even if I’m just a sitter.

He was so beautiful! Its interesting to have a hyacinth on the shoulder that's for sure lol definitely not the most comfortable I've ever been 😅 The first time I saw a hyacinth macaw in person was at a bird store a few years ago and she was the sweetest and gentlest bird. She was such a love bug. I fell in love with her instantly and visited her as much as I could before she left for her new home about a month or so later. I still think of her often and I have many pics of her. A couple months later a friend of mine bought me a huge and I mean huge hyacinth macaw plush for my birthday and it always reminds me of her. Because of her I will always have a special place in my heart for hyacinths 💙💛

I just want to say as an owner of a blue front amazon for thirty years, do not get any bird unless you are ready to invest all that is required to care for them. People buy on impulse because they're pretty or they're funny but the amount of work is substantial. The constant cleaning of the cage, the constant bringing of food and snacks, you can't just leave seed in a bowl, the concern when the bird is alone and you need to get home, the cost of boarding when you go away, the noise. They are beautiful but they have great needs, need for good food, need for companionship, need to be let out of the cage, more needs than a baby. At least a baby would have grown up by now and left home after thirty years but still I am doing all these things. I just want to caution, be aware of all that is involved before investing in any bird, of course a budgie is easy. Many times I have wished I could go back in time and wish I would've gotten a budgie instead of my bird. Very high maintenance. Be forewarned.

Thanks so much for sharing, Jamie. I love the "tough nut to crack" transformation stories!
As for the *Dream Bird* question.. While I've fallen head over heels in love with my son's blue throated macaw, I've always been a cockatoo girl. Likely it's because my 1st childhood bird was a super-sweet male cockatiel, and how much I'd delight in seeing him raise his crest (still do!). If you'd have asked me any time in the past 20 years, I'd have said the Moluccan. I never got one due to being leery of the species' reputation. I'm still unlikely to get one, but only because I'm over the moon happy with the flock we have, including my two smaller 'toos- a Goffin's and an Umbrella. If pressed, I'd say the Goffin's is my Dream Bird, but since I have Gus, I'll just say "favorite species".

    Thanks for the video.
Hyacinth or Scarlet are on the top of my list, once I sort out my own forever home.
I see so much similarities in the why I did dog training with my Husky.
and watching your video's is reinforcing that I can do this, if I have the space for it.
Especially Free Flight, which would be a must for me.

The tip on making them target with their tongue is such a good idea. I want to try training this hyacinth at this sanctuary but I didn't really know how to get them to target without them just absentmindedly shattering the tip of the stick haha

Hyacinth Macaws are my dream bird. I worked with a Salmon crested cockatoo when I was a young adult that had been attacking his owner. That lit the spark of interest in bigger birds, and I hope to get a Hyacinth when my kids are grown, they are so special ❤

I had a very good friend that had a huge aviary.(he’s passed now) He had 6 prs of Hyacinths & hand fed the babies. They were so precious! Very expensive! Gentle giants.
I currently am owned by a Red-Fronted Macaw. We have been together for nearly 35 years. Yep you read that right. He loves to dance & play. He has been talking since I got him (6 mos old). I already rescued a grey so they taught each other lots of things. Fast forward. We’re in rural FL & his home is outside(always has been). We have a family of crows here in the oak behind my house. It didn’t take Big B long to speak crow, craine, duck, & horse! One day I heard him talking, but it was coming from a different direction. Low & behold the crow picked up a few words that B often says! I knew they were very smart, but this was without human input.
My fav parrot & owner is Alex & Dr Pepperburg( I know Alex passed). I love watching her video of him & how smart he was.

Nothing wrong with having a macaw on your shoulder or on your head. It’s not a matter of “control” or “dominance” it’s a sign of bonding and respecting the bird’s wishes.

Looked half year for a baby hyacinth & found one…but not having enough bird time, space, $$ for toys, cage, commitment training skills etc. ... reality set in... still quite content with my Sun C. & A. Gray tho. 🐤💛🐦🖤
Beautiful bird if ya can treat as deserved ...
