I disagree that Link thinks that violence is a good way to accomplish goals. Link only fights Ganon's monsters because he doesn't really have any other choice. He also doesn't kill any humans, instead choosing to sneak past them when they block his path (Hyrule Guards, Gerudo Guards). Link only fights other humans in self defense or to help other people (He only fights the Gerudo swordfighters to free the prisoners + they attacked him first.
Anyway, interesting video. I appreciate the bold take!

Well for one... he's 10-12 years old mentally. He's not exactly firing on all neurons in the brain space yet. He's not comparing and contrasting philosophical concepts or what leading means or anything like that.
For two, like... did you forget he has a genuine personal beef with Ganondorf?
The guy literally laid a death curse on his wooden father figure, who told him to meet with the princess.
A princess who; _need I remind you,_ has *no* political power as a child as her father completely ignores the warning she gives him from her prophetic dreams.
Thirdly, the Divine Right of Kings bit has a lil' more credence in this universe, seeing that the princess he's aiding is _literally_ the reincarnation of a goddess and even just the _lullaby associated with her_ has the inherent magical properties to alter the flow of water and restore destroyed objects, among other things.
Fourthly, Ganondorf himself is a divine king and a tyrant in his own right. Nobody in his own land likes him aside from his own Grammas.
Fifth, he really doesn't use violence to solve problems. He literally wins a horse race to restore land ownership to the family that owns and maintained it after Ganondorf granted it to Ingo for being a fervent supporter of his. He spends like two hours running all over the place for people and filling out multiple prescriptions along the way, and is rewarded for his kindness.
Every single instance of violence in the game is inflicted either on aggressive wild life or creatures that Ganondorf himself summoned specifically to stop you or to kill and harm people.
Gohma is eating the Deku Tree alive. King Dodongo is starving the Gorons. Barrinade is the Gohma plan again with a side order of taking political prisoner. Phantom Ganon is a trap. Volvagia is literally eating Gorons. Morpha has frozen 90% of an entire race in ice. Bongo Bongo literally lit Kakariko Village on fire and attacked people. Twinrova is kidnapping people and brainwashing them to serve her son.
Sixthly, I don't know how every people chooses their leaders in Ocarina of Time. Kokiri society seems to not have any real political structure and the Deku Tree is more of a guide than a leader. Darunia is the big brother of the Gorons but we don't really know anything about how their society is structured. Impa is maybe the only Sheikah we see in the game. Nabooru seems to have earned her place among her people. Ruto is a princess.
In any case, Link helps all of these different people from different backgrounds without forcing them to swear fealty to Zelda or anything, he just goes in and does his best to resolve their problems if he can.
And finally, the representatives of each of the peoples of Hyrule literally rally behind Zelda to kick Ganondorf, and that is Democracy if I've ever seen it. 😉

  • @octorokreviews

I appreciate the bravery inherent with the argument you're making here, but as someone who's probably put more analytical thought into this game than the average player (and has a post-graduate background in European History to boot), I have more than a few problems with this. First off: being a royalist in no way makes you a fascist. The royalists in the German government in particular were the conservatives, who were ousted by the NSDAP (I'm using this acronym so that RUclips doesn't hide this comment) following the death of Paul von Hindenburg. The NSDAP themselves were actually anti-monarchy, because they believed Emperor Wilhelm's bad diplomacy is what led to Germany's political isolation and eventual loss during WW1 (which is kind of true, actually). They therefore willingly dismissed any initiative to restore the Emperor, something that was actually quite popular amongst the German people before the NSDAP's rise to power. Italians did have a King, but his power was circumvented in order to provide more political control to the PNF. The moment the King turned on the Germans and sided with the Allies, the PNF staged a revolt and created the Italian Socialist Republic in the north - not very royalist, as you can see.
Machiavelli was also not a fascist, primarily because... he died 400 years before fascism was invented. Did fascists use some of his writings as inspiration when creating their new political philosophy? Yes. But so did literally everyone else. Machiavelli has inspired every great European leader to some degree since the time of his death; The Prince is practically ubiquitous in European political philosophy, to the point where it almost appears infantile by today's standards - but it was revolutionary for its time. Most importantly: Machiavelli was not an advocate of endless militarism or state propaganda (again, these are modern concepts which he had no knowledge of). To inherently equate Machiavellian thought to fascism is, quite frankly, disingenuous.
On the note of Ganondorf: Ganondorf is the bad guy not because he looks evil, or because he might do something evil later on, but because he actually has done something evil by the time the game starts. He kills Link's adoptive father at the beginning of the game, and he's already poisoned another guardian deity (Jabu-Jabu) and attempted to starve out the Gorons by blocking the way to Dodongo's Cavern. Ganon isn't the victim of extrajudicial discrimination - he's a turncoat and a murderer. That's very different than what real-life fascists did, where they decided to oppress groups who they merely thought might pose a threat to the regime.
I also take issue with your point that Link uses violence to accomplish his goals. Link deliberately does not kill the guards of Hyrule Castle specifically because they have done nothing wrong, nor does he kill the women at Gerudo's Fortress despite their hostility towards him (likely out of pity for their plight). Everything else he kills is directly hostile towards him - Deku babas, stalfos, skulltulas, lizalfos, dodongos - none of these creatures can be reasoned with. Violence can absolutely be righteous, when wielded with purpose and tempered by mercy - two qualities that Link absolutely exhibits. And yes, he is a royalist, but there's nothing wrong with that - especially because Princess Zelda literally, verifiably, does have divine right to rule. This is where the fantasy aspect of the game clashes a bit with reality, but if royals in real life were actually the descendants of Gods, I think a lot more of us would be royalists. But even so: there's nothing separating a loyal royalist from a loyal republican, other than the system of government under which they were born; both are loyal to their country and are therefore both deserving of respect.
I'm leaving you a like because I think this was a brave argument for you to make. However, I do think you should consider doing more in-depth research before putting out argumentative video essays - especially when the argument is bound to rile people up lol. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors, and I hope you have a very nice day.

On the one hand, Japan, Italy, and Germany were all on the same side in WWII; on the other time travel isn't just _thinking_ someone is going to do something bad. With time travel, you have definitive proof, beyond a shadow of a doubt... not tangible proof, mind you... so from King Hyrule's perspective, _he's_ probably a fascist. _Link,_ personally, is merely solving the paradox of tolerance ( which states that if a society's practice of tolerance is inclusive of the intolerant, intolerance will ultimately dominate, eliminating the tolerant and the practice of tolerance with them). So, all together, the King and Ganon? Yes. Link and Zelda? No.

His power politics did become the most famous part of his philosophy, but it's not the only thing his philosophy is about. A lot (most?) of what he says in The Prince can apply pretty universally, but it's definitely written with republican politics in mind.

It's basically what Link did. He was told Ganon was evil, knew as a child that he was bad. Then once he already destroyed the castle then he decides "enough is enough" according to the Ocarina of Time Timeline with adult link. While I think you bring up a fun idea and an interesting concept, I just do not think this game is a defense for fascism, the timeline of the game just doesn't support it.

    Monarchy isn't Fascism
Violence isn't mutually exclusive to Fascism
Believing in good and evil is not mutually exclusive to fascism
Machiavelli predates fascism and was a classical republican and explicitly against autocracy. His politics were much more focused on civic liberty and individual freedom, which is antithetical to Fascism.
Mussolini was not primarily influenced by Machiavelli. His political influence comes primarily from Giovanni Gentile, whose primary influence was Hegel, whose primary influence was Kant, who was overtly against Machiavellian philosophy. Neither Gentile, or Hegel liked Machiavelli's ideas of government structure (which is what we're referring to on the topic of Fascism), even though they saught wisdom in his power politics.
Let me try to give credit where it's due: I think it's cool that you're looking at the politics and morality in a playful and recognizable world separate from our own. The hidden politics in media can be really interesting, especially in a fantasy world.
I would also say you have a lot of wise insight into the world of Zelda and I don't really see much wrong with your moral analyses of the world and the characters - like Ganon = evil isn't enough for me, looking at his methodology was cool.
My advice? Please be very careful with your assumptions on how this fits under political labels. This analyses would have been a million times more fruitful if you weren't trying to fit things into labels, or more specifically, if you weren't trying to fit things under the umbrella of Fascism. As far as the facts are concerned, much of what you got wrong could have been verified (or disproven) really quickly and easily, which isn't to throw shade at you, I'm just saying I'm not giving you an unreasonable pile of homework when I ask you to double check your facts lol.

maybe hyrule was fascist once in the war that killed link's mother but by the time young link is playable it's clearly suffering from a lack of sufficient supply of soldiers who are up to the task. theyre taking bribes, acting in deriliction of duty, and corruption in general beplagues them. one of them even encourages vandalism out of boredom by hiding his personal funds inside objects he wants link to break.

I watched to the end hoping this was a satire piece, but unfortunately since it is not, and you seem to have a small sub count, I’m going to take it you’re fairly new to this. So with that out of the way, problems…
    1. Thinking that Machiavellian thought leads to fascism is outright wrong, in that Machiavellian mode of thought was also a direct inspiration for liberal REALPOLITIK and even Trotskyism.
    2. Misrepresenting Machiavelli here not only causes problems for the “fascism” narrative, but it also ignores the issues that Machiavelli and his followers in the Italian Elitist school of though would dub as “the managerial state,” which would be completely counter to an absolutist monarch with divine right backing.
    3. You are missing half of the story, whereas if you really wanted to make this as incendiary as possible, you would mention the christian imagery within older LoZ titles, thus making link not just a “fascist,” but a “Christofascist!” 😱
    4. We are completely ignoring the simplicity of Link being a reflection of the Monomyth, so of course to claim link as problematic would be to call the entirety of the idea of the monomyth a problematic idea, which would be way too much to even address in a RUclips comment.
I don’t want to harass you into rethinking your content, as even bad ideas deserve a place, and I’m also very open about my biases (very much an extreme right wing elitist), but there is a lot wrong with this video. Of course we are going to disagree just on principle, but I hope you take these words into consideration with your future content. At least try to steelman the opposition, that would at least make these more interesting.
