      Hey Steve. So I’ve been using a small desk top fan to keep my PlayStation cool. It blows from the side near the power source and I’ve noticed it does keep that area cooler, but also contributes to some dust buildup. What do you think?

      I replaced the thermal paste. It is now whisper quiet. I was constantly getting thermal shutdowns on my console. Got fed up and bought a tube of artic mx4. Boom, problem gone. It is at least 90% quieter.

    • @at0m1c684

      SHS can you clarify the thermal paste? i’m trying anything to reduce the noise

    • @shs7009
      @shs7009 4 года назад +10

      @@at0m1c684 It is possible that the factory paste used by sony was inferior or poorly applied. So when I opened up my PS4 Pro and looked at the processor, I found that the paste was dried up and did not cover around 30% of the processor dye, which explains poor heat dissipation to the heat sink. This results in the processor constantly telling the fan to run in overdrive to cool itself, which explains the noise. So I used the Artic MX4 thermal paste which has much better conductivity and performance compared to the default paste used by sony.
      Now it is possible that sony used a paste with keeping longevity in mind and they might have compromised on conductivity and performance, but in my honest opinion, what is the use of longevity if my console heats up and shuts off 5 minutes into a game?
      I have hence managed to reduce the noise profile by at least 90%
      And as it is evident, it is overheating no more.
      Hope it helps.

      Yes it does get loud like a jet engine on games like COD MW, RDR2, BF1... while ur on the Main Menu and during Gameplay. Also according to my observation, I believe Fans run at 15-20% (regular speed while turning on PS4 PRO) on games like - Driveclub, TLOU, GTA V, NFS Rivals, NFS 2015, Outlast 2 etc. What I think is every Game programmed by Developers give instructions to the console on when the fans should start instead of the Console Fans turning on by itself when it reaches close to 115 Fahrenheit. *It's a simple Patch file that Devs can release which in turn would fix the heating issue for such games.* You may or may not get a fix, I'm not sure. Also Devs tried to port GTA San Andreas to PS4 which was by Graphics... a total garbage. I hope the Remastered version of the upcoming Trio Rockstar titles would make it worth the wait.

    For anyone still interested, this is just a guess, but I really think it's more about feeding air on the INTAKE edges rather than the exhaust out the back. The more air you send into the heat sink the cooler it should be, since the only thing pulling air through the intake vents is the internal fan itself. I'm buying a little desk fan to do exactly this. Unless your heat sink is clogged (in which case, watch a video, open it up and clean it out), then assisting the exhaust side is really pointless compared to feeding more air from the intake side as I already stated.

    • @johnrael3128

      hey just wanted to let you know: a exhaust fan pulling air out from the console will cool down more effectively.

  • @RAMROD1847
    @RAMROD1847 4 года назад +15

    The external fan is to extract the hot air quicker. The ps4s thermostat controls the internal fan. The ps4 needs to be at a certain temperature to operate optimal (at 60⁰c normally). This fan is only a benefit if your ps4 is overheating due to too much of a workload on the internal fan due to environment.

  • @SamJH6
    @SamJH6 4 года назад +10

    I use a small usb fan pointed across the back of the ps4 where the internal fans vent. It makes a massive difference in how hot the PS4 runs, as even with a clear space to ventilate, the PS4 does not expel that hot air out far enough IMO and it lingers, heating up the console. The fan blowing across the back of the PS4 helps dissipate the hot air being ventilated. The console is noticeably a lot cooler at the back AND the top of the Playstation isn't hot at all, despite the fan not directly acting on that area.
    This method doesn't only work on the PS4 - a £5 fan saved my PS3 which was constantly overheating and never has done since. Now, 5 years since I started to use a usb fan, the PS3 is still going strong.

      Same for me. When I need help fixing something, it's usually amateurish at best in terms of directions and even the video itself. With him, I don't have to pause as I'm struggling to follow along every few seconds just to make sure I understood him right. Because of him, I was able to get a game disk out of my nephew's PS2. It was the old clunky model and the disk drawer was severely jammed (the things that allow it to slide in and out was bent so it'll open about 1/3 way (enough where you cant get the disk out) and wouldn't shut completely either). And, being a software person and not a hardware person, I wasn't really confident in my ability to take it apart and put it back together without screwing it up royally. With his video, I was confident enough and was able to follow along easily.

    It reminds me of the external fan for the PS2 slim back in the day, that actually melted the console because it fed from the USB port in the console and since those USB ports were not designed for high energy use it put more stress on areas of the PCB that were not intended for and those fans instead ruined the consoles, or that's what I read back then.
    The point is, with some exceptions, console manufacturers know what they're doing when designing them consoles and there is no need to use superfluous fans that may even ruin your console becuase they're making the console work as intended.

    One thing this test does not account is the airflow on other components. There is a mod that blocks rear internal holes because the airflow design just makes those holes to cycle the air coming from the fan into the psu again. When talking about console temps we just tend on focusing on noise or apu temp but we forget the entire package.
    These fans won't lower the temperature but will keep a better airflow from front to back, which in that case you just need to turn them low and let them just exhaust the air from inside. For noise and better temps there are other things like changing the internal fan for a nidec one, changing thermal paste and getting good 1.0mm thermal pads for the chips that need it. Putting fans behind just will improve the entire system air cycle, not lower the apu temp.

    I have 2 PS4s, one day 1 vanilla and one day 1 PRO, when I bought the PRO I thought that it would be more silent than the original console, right now my old console is super silent compared to the PRO.
    Here's the thing, I'm used to cleaning my consoles since the time of the PS3, and every time I open them I never see too much dust inside them as I see in so many videos around the internet.
    Because my PRO is louder than an airplane but is relatively clean every time I open it, I have to assume that the real problem with mine is really the thermal paste.
    I'm comfortable with opening it to clean the dust but I'm afraid to go the next step myself and change the paste because I'm pretty sure that I would have spare parts in the end ;)

    I use a ps4 slim, and every time I play a game like Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Dead By Daylight, or GTA V, it gets very loud. I bought an OIVO vertical stand with a cooler, as well as the charging stand and game holder that came with it. I’m not sure if the fan blows in or takes air out. I haven’t cleaned it in more or less a year, which I hope to be the cause so I can remove the dust in it. I don’t know if there’s a part IN the ps4 that needs replacement, or that it’s dirty

    I've put both my Xbox 1X and my PS4 Pro into a Fractal Design R6 PC tower, vertically, replaced the stock fans and filled the remaining tower fan spaces with Noctuas in a push-pull config, closed it up, set the fans to run at high continuously, and even when my room gets as high as 37 celsius, the console fans never spin up, and with a pc tower two meters away, there's zero noise.....Rather a costly solution, but unless the next gen consoles are ridiculously large, I can just swap out the console/s, for the next gen when they're released!

    So having some Firefighter knowledge about fans, the fan set up to eject the heat doesn’t work at all, really...you need a fan blowing in as well if you want to remove heat and or dust. It’s like having a hot house in the summer and instead of having the fans blow through, you’re trying to eject it instead which takes longer if at all and still heating up the machine in the process by having a fan run super hard. This is why some people have complained about having a hair laying on the disc reader. Here’s how it should work...
    FAN> MACHINE> EXHAUST PORT>
    And make some fans that resist the urge to capture and hold on to the dust lol

    I always thought of those cooling fans as a scam or gimmick. No matter what there will always be waste heat coming from the console. The best way to probably cool off a console better is to install an enhanced heat sink on the CPU but that requires opening the console & specialized tools & advanced technical knowhow most people don’t have. Consoles always get pretty hot especially as they get older & more used up.

    Did you try running the after market on High while supplying power via a USB block in an outlet?
    It seems odd to me that you're trying to cool the system by drawing power from the system itself, which would make the system work harder/run hotter.

    • @sabin1981
      @sabin1981 5 лет назад

      .... that's... not how power works >_> The CPU/GPU isn't working any harder, thus getting hotter, by providing 5v to USB ports.

      @@sabin1981 cool story. I used it this way and it lowered temps.
      A large laptop style cooler($10 on eBay) that goes under it dropped the temps more than the extra fans on the back.
      Both together worked well too.
      But I PC game now so who cares?
      P. S. Never said it made the cpu/GPU work harder.
