PS4 Pro Fan Noise Fix - Detailed Cleaning Tutorial

- The PS4 Pro is notorious for getting extremely loud during stress. The fan sounds like its a plane taking off! In this video, I show you how to reduce that sound by ensuring that the fan is completely cleaned thoroughly and properly. This helps by reducing the amount of rpm it needs to be at to get the same kind of circulation over the heatsink.

New video up on changing the thermal paste and pads! ruclips.net/video/0LL6ZzoiR98/видео.html
One issue I have found in your video, you didn't completely reassemble the PRO as you claimed, the front corner under the Sony logo was not clipped down properly, just a minor thing but I think worth pointing out for future vids.
Tech Savvy Buyer Wow thanks for this video. My ps4 pro sounded like it was ready to blow up everytime i tried to run big games on it.
Tech Savvy Buyer what about using a dust buster to suck it out? Nevermind. You addressed it. Id still use a dust bust though.
Will water suffice ibstead of a cleaning foam?
Genius, it's a hardware issue with the older models. Post cuh -7200 fixes the loud fan. I have 7002 which has the loud fan regardless of dust levels... It's hardware ffs.

Their cooling system is really something they have to improve in the next generation.
The pro is actually the third modell of the PS4. You'd think sony would've added a better cooling system to it by then....

Struggled to hear this video over my PS4.
This is the best one because I also have my volume all the way up 😂😂
FOR ANYBODY WHO WAS IN MY EXACT SAME POSITION, take the top cover of the ps4 off and check with a light in the side of the fan closest to the shiny metal plate. Clean the dust out from there and the ps4 will run silently. No need to replace the thermal paste and take your whole console apart.
You can either use compressed air or modify a bike pump with a little tube on the end for getting in the tight spaces like I did
Can you take picture of the exact spot?
?
ruclips.net/video/QHBX3FCgXiM/видео.html Most consoles have this dusty condition on this heatsink. This fabric from tech tavy is cosmetic. Changing the paste that they give at the factory is the basis because after a few years it dries to a chip.

Finally, my shit sounds like Sony Airlines before. Thanks for this.
a bit late but heres a lil tip for you too cautious people out there.
Follow steps until cleaning the fan.
Set the ps4 upside down(fan facing the ground) on something thats higher or equal to your height(mines on my cupboard with counter weight) with the fan showing or not covered.
Clean walls of the actual fan part with ear buds(i wet mine with my own saliva, broke style)
Get toothpicks and a bit of toilet paper and i mean a bit, literally fingernail size, double that up and wrap it around the toothpick, wet your finger with saliva and "glue" the toilet paper closed and you can pick between the very close parts that the ear bud cant reach.
(Reason for ps4 being upside down is when you accidentally flick dust, it falls to the ground instead of back into ps4.
peeps probably wont read this but it helped me. Cheers
yeah nah i just play with the cover off, with a game case sitting on top of the fan, tale it off once the fan starts pumping weights, then itll chill out for abit
Thanks
Wet cotton with own saliva huh? Kinda hot

@@Daniel189HLL My family complains the fan is too loud, I wanted subtitles to see what he was saying
gogopoktu are you going to strip down and clean? I'm not sure if I dare to be truthful.
If you can’t get subtitles, probably the most important thing he says is to not use a compressed air keyboard cleaner because it can blow the dust into the system and cause it to malfunction; don’t use anything abrasive; use a micro fiber cloth and Q-tips with a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol; don’t use a vacuum, at all; don’t use water.

Cleaning helps a little, changing the thermal paste helps a lot...
@@xhobv02 Luckily it's no longer an issue. Traded in for a PS5 back in November, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future!
@@theST1NG PS5 has liquid metal instead of a thermal paste, which should last for the console life cycle. So cleaning should be enough :)
@@xhobv02 Even better then! Lol
For the people that want the noise to be more down you have ti clean the vent ( heat sync) behind the fan you can see it through the fan it gets clogged and then it gets really hot so by cleaning the vent it helps with over heating and noise ( alot of parts you have to take out for that tho)😪

When console have been off and are ”cold” go to settings and turn off uhd. If noise being the biggest issue this is by far the easiest solution. You can still turn it on when watching movies or if you want the better graphics, but noise will probably be back with games.
Why don’t you use a vacuum with a bristle attachment. The ones with the bristles at the end that dislodges the dust and the sucking power of the vacuum su skills it up.
Cleaning it can help. Changing the thermal paste can help just as much (often more).
Yet, some Pros have a fan that's naturally loud. It's either Nydek or another brand and they were mostly used in the early Pros. In the case of those you literally have to replace it to get rid of the insanely loud noise, if you have it. You simply buy the other fan model on Ebay and replace yours (both are identical in shape but not quality, obviously).
Better yet and for the adventurous, you can mod the console with another slow moving fan that cools the APU and 8gb memory modules for very silent use. It can be done for about $50 and a bit of work.
*Even crazier* is the passive cooling option. I've seen it done on a base PS4 but not Pro. Anyway, it's changing the case completely to a custom case that's more or less a giant heat sink. A guy in Denmark (iirc) makes beautiful passive cases for his consoles and made one for his PS4. Totally silent. I want one.
Does that guy have a video on that case mode ? i wanna see
What's his businesses name?

How
Unfortunately they are loud out of the box. Cleaning the fan won't fix it. People have different sensitivity to noise. My Pros drove me batshit crazy but I live in FL ambient room temp is higher and I play in a quiet room. That's why some say theirs is silent and others jet engine. I've had 3 different OG ps4 and two Pros. The fan screamed on them all
Cleaning your fan is just a preference to me, depending on the load is how loud that fan will be, I can play Mafia three and MLB 18 in 4k and it doesn't scream, it will for just a bit when you start up God of War or Detroit, but then it calms down. People have to realize that it's a computer and the bigger the CPU load on a PC and the faster the fan spins, it's just how it is.
@@mathewhastings9485 I get that. Nothing wrong with keeping it clean I just think the fan design is poor. Not that I'm a fanboy for xbox but on top of my pro I have a One X and previously had a OG one and they are dead silent under load on anything. They both run 120mm fans so more air less rotation. I think but am not 100% that the ps4 and pro fans are 80 mm which spin faster (louder) when needing to move more air. Some AMD gpus use the same design a vortex fan if you will and those cards are loud too. I know it's not all the time and it ramps up in certain situations but it's bothersome for me. That's just me though.
It’s weird red dead’s quiet and warZone is insane loud
Eeeeh, your test after cleaning the console was lying flat. Standing it on its side is always going to make it run hotter because your restricting air flow.
Exactly.
Especially when its on the side where the fan is drawing air in from
Glad I’m not the only one that noticed that, tech savvy but not savvy enough to know your restricting the air flow 😏

Not commenting about low quality pointless videos does not help content nor the platform.
Update: This video will not help you. I completely eliminated any noise on my PS4 pro which was 100% dust free. And before the fan would be extremely loud running any FPS game. Follow this ruclips.net/video/QFZYk7guDqQ/видео.html
Your problem is that yours has a delta fan
Just wanted to thank you for the tutorial. This made a huge difference in my PS4 Pro noise level.
Thank you for this easy to understand tutorial. This is gonna help a ton!
REMEMBER folks if you clean the area your PS 4 PRO sits.....Remember the fan sucks the air around where your system sits.....so if you keep the area clean then you wouldn't have that issue. ...... Easier said than done for some folks! 😎
People in modern warfare ask me if I live near a fucking airport
😂🤣🤣
LEGEND! This worked for me! I'm so relieved, I mean I can still hear the fan at high load, but it's nowhere near jet engine loud like it was before
UPDATE: 4 days later, back to jet engine. I think it's luck of the draw, there are good builds and bad builds, because it's definitely not a dust build up issue. My PS4 Pro originally didn't even have half as much dust as the video. Plus I did a complete dissemble and clean too.
This made me clean my PS4 Pro, which i should be doing so at least I can be thankful for that
I have never actually done this on a ps4 pro, since mine is quite silent even after one year and a half of service, but on my old xbox 360 I had a noise and overheating problem. I opened it and cleaned the dust and it actually fixed the overheating but the fan was always at the maximum speed. At the end I opened it again and replaced the thermal paste that was completely dry and now... well it's still a jet engine like every xbox 360 before slim models but the noise is reduced to bearable levels.
Long story short your problem might be the thermal paste and not the dust, if you're confident in disassembling your ps4 completely it might be worth to replace it.
Most of the time it is quiet for me but when I normally choose higher resolution modes like playing last of us at a native 4k res the pro does start making loud fan like noises same goes for other games when played in higher resolutions
Mine does that too, but I can play GTAV & Arkham Knight for hours without it getting too loud, but when I'm in the menu in MGSV it gets really loud.
Mass Effect: Andromeda causes it to get crazy loud.
Same thing with horizon zero dawn, setting it graphics to the 4k setting it starts to get very loud, just put it on favor resolution on few games that have it
Same her, when i was playing god of war it felt it was going to explode haha
When I play a match of bo4 it isn't as loud as just leaving it the menu. When it's on the menu it just gets louder than ever

Its funny how ppl say dont use a vacuum cleaner on the ps4 but recently i used one on my bros base ps4 because it kept overheating i used it on the sides and back of the console and ever since then it hasn't overheated and the fan sounds quiter so it doesn't matter what u use anything with a suction can clear dust from a console

I think I would vacuum first that way your not moving around a bunch of dust and dirt. After vacuuming I can see using a q tip to remove any residual that is left.
+2 Shoes yep vacuuming is an excellent way to clean it.
I've known more people kill their PS4 with a vacuum than anything else..... It's a misconception vacuums aren't a good idea because they will build up a huge static charge and fry your PS4. search Reddit enough and you will see dozens of people who kill their PS4s with a vacuum stay away
swissmrkc yes almost like a nuclear bomb. Static problems are only a problem if you neglect to un plug your system and or have it grounded. I have been an electrical engineer for the last 42 yrs so I do know a little something about how to clean electronics. Maybe start by giving accurate info before blasting off. Sure don’t see you adding a better solution just making yourself look stupid.
@@2shoestoo42 years, I'd be impressed but everyone knows true expertise comes around 45 years in a trade.....anyway then the guy in the in the video is stupid too as he mentions same thing. Friction of actually cleaning it will remove more caked on dust than the lazy hold a vacuum hose up to vent. Self proclaimed experts also don't cut corners.
That is what anti static wrist cords with grounding cord are for. Sorry you don’t agree but most electronic repair centers will ground the unit and proceed to vacuum and or use compressed air to dislodge dust and particles before disassembly. Looks like I got you blood boiling🤯

Mine sounded like a rocket engine after 2 days playing no man’s sky
My PS4 Pro started sounding like a jet recently while playing ESO. I would get a blue screen telling me my device is overheating & to shut it off. I think I have had it for about eight months. I followed this tutorial and popped it open and the fan s almost spotless. Other than some light dusting on the inside cover there’s nothing really for me to clean. What else should I look for?
mine did that and i hit the fan with wd 40 lollll i would not recommend this but my fan i think was not spinning at all.
i tried to spin it by finger and it was barely moving. then i spent like an hour attempting to get even just a few drops into the core or center.
wd40 is not a lube realy but can clean stuff. wd40 kinda sucks in general but desperate times.
anyways long story short it did get my fan spinning and not just that but i think up to full speed.
i tried to angle the straw under the center of the fan then hit it in mist form from the top a few times.
now when i spin it by finger it keeps spinning for a good amount of time.
i know wd40 is not great long term on most things but they do make special electronics contact cleaner that is safe on electronics and supposedly cleans pretty good.
that might be the best bet.
i just did this a couple days ago so longterm???? might end up killing the ps4 lol who knows.
alls i know is it wasnt running at all before due to overheat brought on by the fan not running. and now its running seemingly fine.
ps4s warm but not lava hot.
I know your post is old now but definitely change the thermal paste it comes with. I bought some high performance thermal paste and fully clean everything and my Pro is silent even on GoW/RDR2.
Best cheap cleaning tool I use is a dollar store makeup brush. Great for vents & easy to clean afterwards. If you give the underside of covers & fan blades a light coat of Armor All dust retention will be minimized. Use Q tip to coat blades with ArmAl. Retention tabs can use dab as well. Ive done this for years & works great.
I underestimated the amount of force you have to put in to get the top off. Didnt know you had to be fucking captain America to do it. I give up

I tries this on my ps4 pro today and it really helped a lot, it was so loud and I kept ignoring it until I got the courage to clean the fan and I don't regret it, now it sounds a lot better of course there is the normal sound of the fan but it's not loud at all and I tried it on God of War which was so loud but now it so smooth. I recommend you people to clean it following this video's instructions.
Cleaning the dust out of your console will only help slightly as this will cause the fan to perform better & hence kick in just as quick as if it was dirty... What is being dismissed here is a design fault by Sony pure & simple...
Sure Sony built the base model with a Fan & the PS4 Pro also but unfortunately certain game's just push the console harder therefore making the consoles cooling fans kick in too soon & too damn loud & its the worst I've ever experienced with Doom Eternal which I bought the digital version today & then played the game tonight only to find the game looks & runs brilliantly but I cant hear the gaming content over the noise of the fan...
My console & fan are clean/along with it being in a very well ventilated space it's the fact that Sony have designed it this way, couldnt they have done the same job but designed it with a quiet fan!..
I'm all for my fan(s) kicking in if I've been playing a while but with Doom Eternal it kicks in right away & goes away for short periods only to come back again...
The only way I've gotten it to stop is when i click on my PS4 Controller to bring up the Map or if i have Paused it via my Controller & Sony need to do something with regards an update patch that stops the fans from kicking in so soon, either that or ID need to bring out an update patch to help with this as I've never known my console to become so loud so quickly & it's only with Doom Eternal that it does this...
Sure the fans will kick in if I'm playing other game's but that's usually after about 45 minutes to an hour & not as soon as I start to play Doom Eternal... The irony... lol
I've looked forward to this game (like everyone else) for so long & now that I've got it I have to Blast My TV Volume Up to a point that it shouldn't need to go to but if I don't I can't hear what's happening during gameplay...
Since I moved into a smaller flat many year's ago I dispensed with all my Surround Sound Equipment & huge speakers as the flat was just too small & I therefore bought a Soundbar and though they do the job nicely I don't want to end up in jail because I've been boxing with my neighbours because I'm using my Sound Bar late at night into the early morning because the fan on a console is so loud I need to use a soundbar or turn up the volume on my TV just hear the in game gameplay sounds...
This is something Sony haven't ever really tackled & it's been down to gamer's to try out & buy so called Cooling Stands & for most part for what I've heard they don't work for the PS4 or Pro or the difference is so minimal its pointless buying these 3rd party cooling stands...
And before Console Fan Boy Zealots say you should've bought an Xbox One I already have an Xbox One, as I'll buy whatever console that will deliver specific exclusive game's only they can, & the noise of fans shouldn't come into this as soon as you start a game...
I've had this happen with a few game's but not to this severity & again I'll stress I wouldn't mind if the fans kicked in only when needed but to kick in as soon as you've started a game is just wrong no matter what console its on or even if it's on a Pc...
You'd expect this from a disc based game playing but the noise of the fans drowns out any disc game's I've initially installed also...
When this first happened when I bought my PS4 Pro I decide to take it into my local indy Games Store that does all sorts of modifications & upgrades to console's & Pc's just to see if there was a fault with my PS4 Pro but the report came back that my console had no faults what so ever & that's just the way it was built!..
So again I stress that Sony needs to try something before they usher in their Next Gen Console just like Microsoft & no doubt Nintendo will do in the coming year or more...
Such a great game ruined by one's fan kicking in way too soon has been something I've noticed a lot on gaming forums for year's now but never really had an issue as much until now & I guess the more developer's push the graphics & sound capabilities of their game's the more this fan issue is going to happen & it's such a pity that some of the great game's that will be released just as this current gen system comes to an end, as all game's developer's usually deliver some of their best game's at end end of the life cycle of any particular console as they've had years to figure out how to best utilise said console than when it was first launched & these game's could be ruined because of something as simple as the noise coming from the consoles fans...
Oh well rant over... lol
In light of the Coronavirus stay safe and healthy & all the best where ever you are in the world...
.....
Bro just get a damn headset... You sound like my stubborn ass friend who has Astro A50s but uses his shitty TV speakers for sound..... makes no sense.
They have new ps4 pros now that are silent. They have different mains connection etc
Took mine apart 20min ago. It was so bad you couldn't see the blade shape of the fan 🤣 the inside was dusty af. I run COD it's so quiet i have to lean towards it to hear my ps4 compared to sounding like it was ready for take off. Feels proud bruh
Yes...!!!! Hard to open and i removed the fan just like you said.
Its sooooo silent now
Hi
Are you series
yeah but mine came loud already when i bought it 🤔 all my friends have that problem too ig ps4 pro is the ps4 but instead using more turbo power
My ps4 doesn't just make jet noises if my aircon is off it overheats and turns itself off
Each time i switch on A COD game It turns off saying overheating 🥺 Pls Help. (Otherwise it can run games like Fortnite for hours)🙁
Did you try cleaning it?
Mine automatically goes into jet mode playing anything AAA. As soon as god of war starts up the PS4 goes into jet mode in anticipation. Not like my pc which waits for temperatures to rise before doing that.
Is it a PRO? If so that's an issue with the console having uncapped FPS during menus, a few games patched this out but many (COD, RDR2, etc) have yet to do so and probably never will hence why the console goes crazy on loading/menu screens as soon as you boot the game up.
@@fireflyry yeah it is. It’s crazy how loud it gets
My Pro when playing Ghost of Tsushima sounds like it’s just taken off and heading into space. LOUD.
Don't forget to clean the heat sink, they can get pretty dusty
Not sure why people are complaining. Sony gave us an electric powered jet engine for $400! Tesla charges $10,000 for their batteries alone. #staywoke
