The term Endothermic is used because the Nicad cells actually absorb heat during the first 80% (approx) of the charging process. There would be heat generated by the charging process which would be absorbed, so the overall effect is not to get colder but to stay roughly flat. In practice I believe it rises a small amount, but nothing like the 100% exothermic NiMH. You'd have to look into the actual chemistry involved to know the finer details.
Dave, the Delta peak charging principle is only working a currents above ~C/5 which you didn't mention in your video. If you charge with lets say C/10, you wont get a stabile delta peak to detect.
Can you please make a video providing some guidelines (best practices) as to how to charge and discharge Ni-MH batteries so we can get the most life out of them?
it'd be great if you could talk about the lithium batteries too ! the R/C crowd use them a lot but I'm not sure they understand how they work all that much but they are the best power source for anything mobile/portable and high-power
This takes me back! I used to spend a lot of time battery testing back in the 1990's when I was involved with racing a battery conversion of a Porsche 914. We used to completely baffle people by fast charging Optima YelloTop AGM lead acid batteries at up to 5C. When you're pumping in hundreds of amps and initially the voltage is DROPPING, you get a lot of people really confused. That included John Olson, the electrochemist who deveoped the battery! From later research, it seemed the high charge rates were changing the plate structure and lowering the internal resistance. The temperature increase whilst charging would decrease over a number of cycles. Other researchers found that cycle life could actually be increased by (carefully monitored & controlled) fast charging.
Can you charge a Ni-CD battery on a NI-MH charger? The cells and amps are in range, and i read this charger would, but it’s not charging, and saying the NICD are full. The charger gets fire hot charging just a Ni MH bat! Thank you for your time!
I have two NiMH battery packs for my Neato robot vacuum. 4/3A x 6 , 7.2V, 4000mAH. Based on voltage drop during discharging at various currents I believe the pack resistance is 0.5 ohms. I am using a Turnigy Reaktor smart charger. I would like to run 3 x Charge Discharge cycle. Please suggest what the charging current, deltaV, discharge current, discharge voltage should be set to. When I put the batteries back into the Neato Ive been getting a battery error. At this point I'd like to avoid buying a new set.
Question. What is the minimum voltage needed to get ni cd drill battery to get it charging. Each battery is normally labelled 1.2v. I want to replace some of the 'dead' single batteries to get the drill battery charged and working. Thank you.
@ EEVblog I have opened my Philips QC5050 trimmer today and I found battery AA Ni-Cd type. Can I fit that type of battery on my trimmer? Is that fine with the tool and charger? The charger is 1.3V, 9W and 1500 mAh. Cheers!
I have two questions, hopefully some1 with more information will answer them. I have a Ni-cad battery pack. 1. My 12v batteries measure 14.4 volt when they are fully charged... why? 2. I'm using them a few times a month, 4-5 times per month. Can I keep them in my drill fully charged? (ready for use when I need it) I charge them fully when they are empty(0.9-1.0 V / Cell) and put them back in my drill to sit for a few days (up to 7) ready to be used again.
+Zoltán Béres a charged 12V car battery will also measure 14+. Also, if you were to measure the battery voltage while under load, it would be 12 or less.
14.4 is too high. They are being overcharged. Fully charged NiMH batteries should be 1.35 volts per cell. So your battery should be 13.5 instead of 14.4
+EEVblog Hello Sir, I am currently doing a project where I am trying to analyze different brands of rechargeable NiMH batteries. I was thinking of building a circuit to recharge the batteries but could I just take a apart an already built NiMH recharger? Are there terminals in the charger that I can take measurements from? Thank You
Gday Dave, I want to use my adjustable lab supply to trickle charge my 4x nimh’s at 0.05C in series, adjusting the current is pretty straightforward, my question is what should I set the lab supply voltage to? 1.4v or something around that? Thanks.
Found a source for my interest at last! Just one question, why aren't you a school teacher? By far more interesting and enjoyable! Thanks for the videos!
I bought a XTAR MC2 USB multi battery charger (14500, 18650 etc. and its input is 5V 1A. I bought a Eveready rechargeable battery thats 1.2V and 1300 mAh and its been charging from 3pm upto 12:30am. My question is, is this safe? the XTAR MC2 has a full charge cutoff but still waiting for that green light. Is it safe to full charge it the first time? does it take really that long? its not getting hot during charge btw. I tried my chinese 3.7 18650's which is close to full and it did fully charged.
I need to charge a fa-bp it’s a pack of 4 batteries, 4.8v can I just use an old nimh charger, it’s not the end of the world if I wreck or blow them up. Can I do this.?
Thank you Dave! I remembered your more recent video on charging a LiPo/LiIon battery using a LAB power supply. I have a set of NiMH batteries I urgently need charged but the charger broke. LAB power supply + your videos to the rescue :) Of course I'm closely monitoring everything but so far so good 😊
I have a clansman radio battery (24v 4ah), I know i got to charge is 10% of the amp hour rating, so 0.4amp, but what would the voltage be for a slow charge? its a nickel metal hydride battery. I also have a small 12v 0.6ah battery for a smaller radio so a 0.06amp but again what voltage?
I have an old craftsman nicd charger but there is ac current coming from the output!!! What is up with that? How can ac be used to charge nicd batteries? But I also see a number of diodes on the pcb making me think there is dc output as well. I am really confused! How can this work for charging batteries?
I had a charger that used a short to ground to pulse the current. All the clocks in the house would not keep time, and when I put a scope on the mains the frequency (& volts) would fluctuate. Finally I tracked it down to this pile of junk phone battery charger. Unplug it and it stops, Plug it back in and it starts back up. Using a digital camera as a poorman's storage scope/tracer I use a lot of AAs. Monster Cable (your favorite company) makes a great charger. I have good NiMh AAs from 1999.
I was charging my Airsoft's battery which is rated at 8.4V 1200mAh with a stupid charger that doesn't stop charging or doesn't offer any overcharging protection. It just lowers voltage from 220V to match the battery. After watching this vid I thought I should measure the battery with a multimeter and got back 10.2V!! from the battery? wtf? Does temperature have to do anything? Battery is still hot from charging. Should I let it cool down and take another measurement? Faulty multimeter?
Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a charge / discharge cycle to raise the Volts of my Ni-MH batteries as much as possible? even at the cost of decreasing the life of cells
I was reading I can chargue the batteries at 1 C with the Delta Temp / Delta time, but this reduces the lifetime of the battery in general terms, this is true?
Great presentation, you have a great way of teaching! Thanks for the free education, I wish some of my profs in college had half the presentations skills that you do.
@@dlarge6502 You can charge at higher voltages. 1.5v per cell (in series) is great. You will see voltages such as 1.2v (1-cell), 2.4v (2-cells, charge at 3v), 3.6v (3-cells, charge at 4.5v), etc. Yes 1.2v per cell will work, but it will take waaaaaaaay longer. The cutoff discharge voltage should be around 1v, at which it's considered "discharged". Best to use cheap universal battery chargers such as IMAX B6 or other single cell chargers such as the Mboxer, which will select the safest voltage/amperage automatically.
I think all these charge methods rely on rise of temperature. when you heat a battery its resistance drops and so voltage will also drop if current is high. unfortunately it works only when you fast charge, if current is low these methods are worthless. and may damage battery if not time limited
Hi Dave, I know its an older video perhaps you can still help, I made a 12V battery from AA ni-mh 1200mAh 1.2, how do I go about charging the pack with my cheap lap power supply ?
Always remember guys if you have an ebay account and find that after your weight in grams and capacity tests are bad, you can DEMAND A FULL REFUND AND REPORT THE SUPPLIER to ebay Like I have done over the past 6 years. I give ebay proof by photos and readings of what I have found wrong with the batteries. They have a 100% full refund policy. You have nothing to lose. Ebay management will eject the supplier from ebay permanently!!
NiMH has more capacity and is more tolerant over reverse cell voltage that can happen on overdischarged packs. All the rest is disavantage compared to NiCds.
Considering that there are only about 43 million Australians I would totally be willing to have my tax dollars pay to move them all to the U.S., Canada and England for a few years to get rid of that up-inflection that is so pronounced. NiMH is as safe as NiCds, with more capacity. But while NiCds can be beat to death and still work, NiMH needs a really good (expensive) charger employing all the techniques he is describing on the video. With a dumb charger they last only a few cycles.
This video oozes with the classic pioneer-age charm of RUclips. I may be forgiven for missing that time a little.
Yep befor the commies took over. All good things must end I guess

Lol 2009 what a time back when this place was still the shit without all the monetization and woke cancer. Bonus points for potato cam.
I miss the old YT so much...
What in the blank blank are you talking about? Come down from your high and make a decent comment. Good luck to you.

Can I Ni-Mh parallel connecting,? Which method use

@EEVblog so I assume eBay sellers who list 'NiMH' batteries as Ni-CD are setting buyers up for a dangerous situation?

What is difference between fast and slow battery charging?
What are the advantages over each?
Chandimal Fernando fast charging your battery does not last that long over time. Slow charge, your battery will have prolong life in time.

@NosferatuD Yeah, I started out thinking I had to be all "prim and proper" in front of the camera, and not my usual opinionated me!
Just came across you video. Was looking for more of a how to rather than an theory explanation. Nice info just the same. Cheers

How long of a charge time does a 2000Amh NIMH battery need, in term of hours?

The diodes will take care of it. They will somehow filter the AC and allow/convert to DC. I have newer 3v Craftsman drills which do that.
just wanted to know if you can charge ni-mh with a ni-cd charger?
Love the way you're so enthusiastic :)
Well explained and clear... thank you!
i know it's kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good website to watch new series online?
@Jaxtyn Allan try FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)
@Karsyn Mack yea, I've been using Flixzone for years myself :D
@Karsyn Mack Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I appreciate it!!
@Jaxtyn Allan No problem :D
Hello there. How do I measure the capacity of each of these batteries? I think it's done with a charge discharge. What is your method? (for Nİ CD)
OK, there are dark energy, black holes and blackbody radiation. But what about black current?
